La Tupina

"A genuine institution, this country inn champions dishes of yesteryear... Sanguette (blood pudding), macaronade (pasta with beef and tomato sauce), chips fried in duck fat: local produce is promoted with conviction in hearty dishes from South-West France, but also seasonal vegetables and meat roasted in the hearth. The fine produce on the counter certainly whets the appetite." - Michelin Inspector

Really nice typical french cuisine restaurant. Service was a little slow and not very attentive but the food was great. The beef was very good and the chicken as well. It is an expensive place since dishes range 28-32 on average.

The location is great — you can sit on the terrace by the street and enjoy an authentic French experience with a lovely view. Service could be improved for a restaurant of this level. The staff spoke average English, which was enough to communicate since we don’t speak French, but more attention would help. For example, our waitress brought lemonade instead of butter, and it ended up on the bill (though she apologized and it was eventually removed). Food was mixed: • I had the duck carpaccio, which was delicious 👌 • My husband had the duck breast, but it was nothing special. • The kids’ menu (meat and fries) was a good option. • Bread and butter were excellent. A few downsides: the English menu online is outdated, with restaurant prices in French menu about €6–7 higher. Also, the dessert options weren’t very appealing — not much variety or local specialties, so we skipped them. Overall, a nice place for the atmosphere and some dishes, but with room for improvement in service, pricing transparency, and dessert selection.

The welcome was very warm & I was given complimentary house rillette etc w/ bread... It just melts in your mouth. The escargot was not my favorite. The sauce was a bit muddy, the bone marrow fat had been emulsified & pureed with the shallots & wine. There wasn't much distinction, but it grew on me. The duck was pretty good with the creamy mushroom sauce but the foie seemed slightly low quality/butchered & the breast was cooked too quickly, leaving little skin present. The fries were honestly the highlight. Delicate crispy, not greasy, soft on the inside. I would go back for those & the free rillette. All the wine I had was also excellent. Thanks to my server, I had an appropriate glass for every dish that evening. Merci!

Google
Service made lots of mistakes, but I guess it was late and very hot. We were late for our reservation and got a bit of an earful for not calling ahead, which made us feel quite unwelcome (even though a different guy we spoke to in person before was charm personified). The earful might have been more justified had the food been stellar. Too much oil used in several dishes, especially the vegetables.

Google
Unbelievable experience at La Tupina. A hedonistic experience to say the least. Amazing selection of meats cooked over open fire. Frites cooked in duck fat. Not a meal for the faint of heart to be sure. There is a fish option but with stunning selection of Beef, Chicken, Lamb and Sweetbreads why would you? Have a different meal for fish. Really. Everything was executed to perfection and after a week in Bordeaux this was the greatest meal of the whole week. The kitchen had no misses. Would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Bordeaux and it is now on my "must visit" list for next time.

Got seated quickly but it must have been a busy evening, it took a while to get greeted by the server, which by the way was super kind! Other than that the roasted chicken I ordered and the crème brûlée was super delicious and the presentation was great!

Google
Fire, Flesh and a Double Magnum of Glory La Tupina doesn’t do delicate. It does fire, fat, and food that grabs you by the collar and demands your respect. Tucked into a 17th-century stone building in Bordeaux, it greets you with a roaring hearth and the scent of duck fat and scorched beef. This is not a place for restraint. This is a place for worship. We began with cold duck foie gras, rich and arrogant, as it should be. Then came the côte de bœuf, grilled in the flames, thick enough to qualify as architecture. The duck-fat fries were crisp and golden, as essential as oxygen. Green beans made a token appearance. No one touched them. And then there was the wine. A double magnum Margaux. Yes, you read that correctly. Velvet in a glass. Deep, dark, commanding. We drank like Roman emperors and did not apologise. Dessert was a gateau Basque, warm custard spilling across the plate. An Armagnac arrived, because of course it did. The service was brisk and beautifully indifferent. No one coddles you here. They feed you like royalty and expect you to keep up. La Tupina is a temple of tradition. A cathedral of smoke and meat and glorious excess. You don’t dine here. You surrender.

Google
We liked the good French food, the impeccable service and the old fashioned place. We did not appreciate at all that they tried to rip us off when paying. We had reserved a set menu at 115 EUR per person, but the bill mentioned twice 155 EUR. Luckily enough, even after some wine, I spotted the tentative fraud.

Yelp
Had a lovely meal here to celebrate birthday. The food was great ( not at all healthy unless you include the green salad ). All the meat is cooked on an open fire.

Yelp
If I could give them higher than a 5 - I would!! AMAZING experience. First, we showed up shortly before they took their last seating for lunch...and they were kind and gracious. Asked us if we could order soon - which we gladly did. The wine, the chicken and foie gras, the bread, the service - exceptional. And the ambiance - we couldn't have asked for a more special location/food/people for our last meal in Bordeaux. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Delicious grilled meats and fish on a cozy street. Enjoyed the duck breast cooked pink and the fries weee just the way I like them,, thick cut. Sat at a quaint outside table for two. A perfect lunch spot. Our second Time and will return for a 3rd next year.

Yelp
A group of us were winding down our bike tour in Bordeaux in 2019 and this restaurant was recommended to us through an Australian friend who traveled with us. She had worked in the Australian wine industry and remembered a write-up of this Southern France country style restaurant. It was a wonderful experience as our choice of meats were on display as we entered and the host/cook was working the meals under a hearth while checking our reservations. We were completely mesmerized by the ongoing cooking activity at the entrance of the restaurants. The meals main course beef, poultry and fish were cooked right under the hearth, as well as the fries cooked in duck fat. Tremendous dinner and eating experience. A review post overdue and interrupted by the COVID pandemic....

Yelp
Cozy little restaurant with polished and professional servers. There are multiple rooms, and we were in the one that had multiple two seater tables together. It was a bit cramped, but whatever! We're here for the food. Started off with radishes, cauliflower, and bread. The radishes were very tasty, and we ended up asking for more. Warning: our goal was to try as many atypical dishes as possible. We ordered the pigs blood crepe as our appetizer. The first few bites were really delicious, but we underestimated how heavy it would be. Would recommend this for a group of 4 people to share. I have a hard time imagining one person eating this. Mains: got the goose wing and kidneys. The goose wing is more like the drumstick and thigh. Very delicious, but unfortunately I was so stuffed with the crepe that I couldn't eat much. Thankfully I had it the next day and it was great! The kidneys...oh boy. I'll be honest, it came out and it looked like poop. I had a bite and it was...not my cup of tea. But my mom ate all of it! I will say that this isn't something that I'd recommend for the average eater, but if you've had offal before and like it, this is a treat!

Yelp
Kinda disappointed. First off, service was lovely. Warm and inviting. Love the staffs approach. However my entry was tough and chewy (the chicken and goose fat fries) and the fries soggy. The flavor was excellent on the fries, but why not crisp? After half way, they were just sitting in a pool of fat. Not super yummy. Desert, again, not sure if it was supposed to be warm. Canole with icecream- flavor was goos but the canole was chewy. Like chewy. Caramel is like no where in France. Again, I dine a lot and this was middle ok. Maybe my chicken was tired :/ Ambiance was nice and classic but I sadly would not return. Tea selection is very unique and made at the bar with French herbs and ingredients.

Yelp
We're visiting from the United States and we were so impressed by the food, service, and ambiance. It was so incredible and memorable. We hope to recommend this restaurant to family and friends when they visit this beautiful city!

Yelp
Food was mediocre and service was okay. The monk fish was inedible, but the accompanying artichokes were good. Foie gras was okay, and the boeuf bourguignon was more rare than medium rare. A rather disappointing experience given other reviews.

Yelp
We had a great lunch here. When you enter, you immediately see a huge fireplace with sauces being warmed, charcuterie displayed, and fries being cooked in duck fat. The waiters here are all friendly and helpful. Good menu. Lots of choices. My pasta/mushroom/cream dish was large and delicious. My husband's pigeon was good but a little undercooked for his tastes. This was definitely one of our best meals in Bordeaux. We would highly recommend it to anyone.

Yelp
We had a wonderful meal! The duck was perfectly grilled, hubby had the tournedo of beef and we tried foie gras for the first time. It actually was really good! We sat near the grill and enjoyed watching the chef at work. A man came up to the counter a few times and helped himself to the bowl of radishes which were out for the servers to put on each table. He put his hands in his pockets, then we watched in disbelief as he then ran his fingers through the bowl of radishes again. These were radishes which were being served! I mentioned it to our very friendly waiter who then told me it was the owner! Please someone tell him that is disgusting!

Yelp
Pure serendipity. My wife, daughter and I were staying at a hotel across from the train station on an overnight stopover in Bordeaux. We were just going to grab a pizza until the front desk clerk suggested a nice restaurant a short walk away called La Tupiña. We were unaware of the restaurant's reputation and when we arrived on a Sunday night the place was not very busy. The woman who greeted us at the door asked if we had a reservation and when we said we didn't she deliberated briefly (in French) with the chef and we felt there was a chance we wouldn't be seated. By this point we were under the spell of the charming interior, the open wood-fired grill and the amazing aroma and were relieved when we were taken to a table. My wife ordered the prix fixe dinner-- scallops with truffles followed by a wonderful fish entree and sorbet with a glass of champagne served with each course. My daughter and I shared a large bowl of an amazing beef and vegetable soup, then she had a pasta dish served in a deep pot with plenty to share. I ordered a filet. The meat was EXTREMELY rare and I considered sending it back, but then figured these people know what they're doing and I dug in. The filet was tender and delicious and I was glad I had said nothing. It was served with French fries cooked in goose fat. Unbelievably good. The service was prompt and friendly and the portions were generous and satisfying. Yes, our dinner cost a bit more (LOL) than a pizza, but as my daughter pointed out-- "When in Bordeaux..."

Yelp
We did not make a reservation and came here on a whim during a quick trip to Bordeaux. The staff informed us we would have to sit outside since we had no reservation but said it in a way that made it seem like it was a bad thing, the weather was beautiful and we actually wanted to be outside (it was a weird exchange and a little off putting). We started the meal with the tomato soup which was delicious, however, it was a cold soup. I feel like if you are going to serve a traditionally hot soup cold you should probably warn people. The chicken was delicious, really moist and flavorful. The fries were absolutely wonderful. However, the star of our meal was the lamb! It was braised perfectly and the beans that came with it were incredible.

Yelp
Items Selected: Rose du Jour Terrine, Rilette, Radishes, Cauliflower, Butter, Bread Pork and Duck Sanguette Foie Gras Terrine with Sweet Wine Cadillac Black Pig Le porc noir de Bigorre - Roasted Medium Rare with Pommes Puree French Toast with Jam and crème Anglaise Canele with Walnut Ice Cream and Caramel Mini Canele Fried Dough Suggested by two well traveled friends as the best place in Bordeaux for an authentic experience featuring the sort of cuisine served in homes across Southern France, it was with good fortune that La Tupina offers dinner late into Sunday night, and finding the rustic space mostly empty but extremely welcoming at the time of a 19h30 arrival the experience was everything that was promised, though the kitchen's unwillingness to size down any of the plates limited options for solo dining while still driving a nearly €100 price. No doubt taking its craft seriously, proteins as well as produce sourced from many of the region's best purveyors with heritage breeds abound, a visit to La Tupina begins in the foyer where ingredients are plainly laid out in full view and with daily specials added to an already sizable carte the only questions are ones of appetite and predilections, the best bet undoubtedly arriving with a large group ready to order in abundance and share plates round-by-round. Not particularly busy during a frigid night in late November, only four other parties present during the course of my two hour stay, service is casual but caring in a decidedly French manner, my three plate initial selection warned to be "too much," but eventually allowed when I was assured that smaller portions of the cassoulet and macaroni could not be prepared. Not for lack in offal or meat, a basket of crudites served alongside housemade bread even offering a pate and terrine, the meal began with a glass or local Rose served alongside a thick slab of foie gras tempered by light notes of wine and whether eaten all alone or slathered on toasty buttered brioche the flavor was only surpassed by the texture, a lesson in creaminess handed down in each bite. Moving next to something new, my only experience with sanguette to this point a small bite served within Michelin Starred environs as part of the canapes, La Tupna upped the ante substantially with it's blood pancake, the diameter easily nine inches with a quarter inch thickness still ever so slightly gelatinous, the richness still too much for just one person to enjoy all alone even as bites of pork and duck helped break up the textural monotony. Tough to decide between the cassoulet, signature foie infused pasta, duck, or confit wing off goose it was actually the waitress who convinced me to steer off course, and although a pork chop may seem a bit 'safe' at such a place the use of Black Pig de Bigorre made the results anything but typical, the medium rare roast offering a rich nuttiness with gamy undertones akin to lamb while the roasting juice soaked into silky pommes puree. Assuming that such a meal would nix dessert it was again with questions of capacity that an order of two house signatures was met, but persisting that I would likely be fine and was happy to pay regardless it was after a short delay wandering the heavily wooded space that the request was granted, the steaamy Pain Perdu baked golden with fig preserves and a sidecar of Crème Anglaise while the housemade canele were without doubt the best tasted in the city, the crackling-shelled duo sliced and served with a dollop of nutty ice cream beneath a light drizzle of caramel.

Yelp
My meals lacked any color. My whole plate was brown. The potatoes are overhyped and pair better with the mushroom sauce than the actual meat did. Although the veal chop was flavorful, it was also a nightmare to cut with their non-serrated knives. it was like I was in a battle with an already dead animal. That shouldn't happen. The redeeming factor was the foie gras [duck, not goose] and toast. Wow. It was very rich and very nice. It can definitely be shared by two people. Our waitress was very sweet and attended to all our needs regularly, while having good English and being polite. Overall, I think the food is way overpriced, and you are paying for the nice aesthetic/environment as well as the appeal of meat cooked over a grill. Which, if you're from USA and/or have a grill yourself, other cheaper restaurants/your own bbq should be much more value for your money.

Yelp
After a day of touring wine chateaus in Pauillac and Saint Julien, our tour group went to dinner at La Tupina. La Tupina looked very promising as we stepped in the door. It had homey feel with its rustic, country kitchen replete with a working fireplace and a beautiful assortment of fresh meat and poultry just waiting to be kissed by the fire burning in the fireplace. We were seated in private dining room that easily accommodated our party of 14. We had a pre-selected 3-course meal of French classics with 2 or 3 choices for each course. I opted for the Terrine de Foie Gras de Canard Mi-Cuit; the Filet de Bœuf, medium rare, with Crème de Cepes, and Frites Maison; and for dessert, Poire Pochée au Vin Rouge. The terrine was a well-done dish exuding flavor and richness. Unfortunately, it was the food highlight of the night. My cut of my filet was surprisingly thin and a bit less tender than I'd expected. More disappointing was that it was considerably overdone, coming out medium/medium well. While it was somewhat understandable given our party's size and the number of filets ordered at the same time, consistency seemed to be a problem around the table as most were over the requested doneness. Less understandable was that none of us who ordered the filet received the frites that were supposed to come with it. They were only delivered, without explanation, after we asked about them. We should've just taken a pass on them as they were oily, soggy, lukewarm and otherwise underwhelming. My poached pear was good if not unremarkable. I didn't get a chance to look at a wine list since our wines accompanying dinner had been pre-selected. However, La Tupina seemingly allows diners to bring in their own wines (I don't know if or how much a corkage fee was charged.), which was a plus. La Tupina was recently touted by Thrillist as "arguably the most famous restaurant" in the "World's Best Food City", Bordeaux. (http://www.thrillist.com/eat/nation/the-world-s-best-food-cities). Apparently, we should've had the duck confit. Famous doesn't necessarily equate to outstanding or better than average, even in the "world's best food city". Still, despite my ho hum experience, I'd return for its Old World charm and to see if it was a one off bad night. 2.5 stars

Yelp
You can't beat the ambiance and service. I've been here 6 times now and it's always wonderful. The St. Jaques and bacon appetizer is amazing. The crunchy salad is very nice. You can beat the chicken and onions, the cassoulet, the lamb, and the cod. The caneles and ice cream dessert was wonderful. If you can't get into the restaurant, eating across the street at the grocery is very nice too. Quiet and great service.

Yelp
Had great expectations of this place after watching rick steins french oddesy. (Admittedly the program was recorded over 12 years ago). Tables are so cramped that it's impossible to get to your seat without dragging your ass across the neighbors table. The food was mediocre at best. I had the duck breast and it was bouncing off the plate. I had serious trouble cutting it between sharpness of knife and rubbery duck. My son had the chicken dish which was pedestrian at best. Dessert was ok. Overall very disappointed for the reputation and price. I watched a guy across the room from me eat his bone in steak and it was a major jawbone e workout. He had to tear the meat off the bone with his hands and teeth. Won't be back.

Yelp
Amazing food & service. Charming ambience and supreme traditional Bordeaux cooking. Heavy, rich meals so come hungry!

Yelp
Funny story, met a wine rep in Atlanta that recommended this restaurant, said it was a must when in Bordeaux France. WOW was he right...what a great experience. Sat outside which turned out to be a pretty busy street with traffic but still a great experience. Food was amazing, very European family style service.

Yelp
Tourist Trap. Everything overcooked. Especially chicken. And when we sent back the asparagus for being overcooked and too soft, chef disagreed and ended up charging us for two orders of asparagus! I have eaten at restaurants around the world, from hole in the walls to places with three Michelin stars, and NEVER has a chef said to charge us for a return dish. Wow. Dissappointing.

Yelp
In preparing to review La Tupina I looked over other reviews, and I have to say my experience was far more positive than what I've read. Perhaps it was the rainy day that meant the staff was not overworked, or maybe there's been a change behind the grill, but we were more than satisfied. We opted for the three course menu, with three paired glasses of wine. For myself, I started with a rustic ham and egg dish somewhere between an omelette and scrambled eggs. While it wasn't anything special, it felt like good, fresh home cooking. For the main, I chose the lamb, and this is where La Tupina shined. It was rich, fall off the bone meat with a brothy, aromatic sauce and a side of white beans. Finished with a warm chocolate cake, feeling extremely full but satisfied. But let's be clear - this isn't fine dining. It's rustic country food, as simple as can be. If that's not what you're looking for, then you may be disappointed. It may taste too smoky, or too salty, or feel a bit too simple. But if you want a full belly, friendly service, and the feeling of being in a farm house kitchen - La Tupina is for you!

Yelp
La Tupina has good food, the interior of the restaurant has fluorescent lighting which was very very bright and uncomfortable, and then one of the lights started flickering...other than that, it has tasty and rich food. We had the requisite goose fat fries which were great. The monkfish was beautifully cooked with a nice sauce. The seared fois gras was slightly underdone and cold on the inside, but excellent quality. I got a salad with white asparagus, but it was bad. The chateaubriand steak was very nicely cooked and flavorful, but maybe not the best cut. I think the ambiance was really lacking: no music, bad lighting and not many customers...it made the experience a little weird. The wine by the glass was not good btw.

Mara M.

Yelp
This restaurant is very quaint, authentic, & traditional French. The food is AMAZiNG. We had the lamb (believe it was shoulder). It was the best tasting lamb we've had in over a decade: So tender, falling off the bone, in the most amazing red wine sauce. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Aubrey M.

Yelp
This is restaurant has a very traditional, very heavy cuisine. Most items on the menu seemed a little pricy and heavy but we had the special lunch menu of the day which was only €18 (most main dishes were €30 and above) and included an appetizer of a leek with a poached egg, an entree of baked chicken with vegetables and a pastry type of desert. Very delicious but probably would not go back for anything on their regular menu.

Yelp
We went here after reading many blogs saying this is the best bistro so we thought we would try it. We went for sunday lunch so it was very quiet. However, the service was shocking. It took forever for them to take our orders, my husband veal chop was over cooked, they forgot about our salads and by the time we could get their attention to order another glass of wine, they forgot that too. When my husband advised that the veal was overcooked, they argued with him. Basically worst dining experience in France so far and makes it even worse that it was expensive! I think this might of been a good restaurant back in the day but I think the ship has sailed and there are now many more delicious and definitely with better service Bordeaux restaurants available!

Yelp
Excellent ! This place is an experience. Great service. Staff all have personalities. They welcome you with a plate of radishes, cherry tomatoes and ham cubes. The bread is crusty and delicious. Food cooked over open fire. We had some wonderful white asparagus, succulent beef and pork. Reasonably priced but good wine. We were stuffed but still had a cheese plate.

Critic L.

Yelp
Reservations are highly recommended. We got there early on a weekday where the dining room was completely empty but they werent able to seat us in main dining room. Instead, they sat us across the street in their grocery store that had about 5 tables. We were able to order from the same menu but lost the fine dining experience. The menu and options were pretty good. I cant exactly remember what we ordered but we were pretty satisfied with it.

Luke P.

Yelp
Wife & I ordered the tasting menu. The wine was excellent. The foie gras and bacon scallops were so-so. Next, we waited 30 minutes for the entree to arrive, drinking our waters since we had no wine. My medium rare veal was over-cooked. My wife's sturgeon was so-so. The desserts were meh. Then we waited another 20 minutes to pay the bill. Service was so abysmally slow (and the restaurant wasn't packed) and the food was mediocre, so I would avoid this place.
google avatar

Daniel K.

Yelp
Great service . The food was good but I feel like people overrate this place because it is a tourist spot . There were not a lot of French people in the restaurant not that is bad but it means it is higher in price. I got the chicken which is recommended and it was good . They also make traditional French fries which is really good. I would recommend this place to get a true French dinner and the feeling of being in a French restaurant in the 1960s

Yelp
This was the best meal I had during my time in Bordeaux. The ambiance of the place is outstanding. It has a very rustic country-french look. Perhaps the locals may find this to be a little "theme park-ey" since it's right in the middle of a very modern and cosmopolitain part of downtown Bordeaux, but for a foreigner, far from Paris, who wanted to try some very local bordelais cuisine, it was right on point. Regardless of the décor, the food was, indeed, classic bordeaux fair. I mean they have friggin' lamprey. I had an incredible veal dish while each of my companions was equally impressed. Like many places in France, it's a good idea to be familiarize yourself with the french menu, since the English version is not too good. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this place: delicious!

Yelp
A universal disappointment. Disappointing wine list and sub standard fare all round. Come here to tick it off the bucket list, but look elsewhere if you value a good meal.

Yelp
This is, quite simply, the best restaurant in the World. The wine list goes from reasonable to stratospheric, teh staff are as down to earth as anywhere and the fact that they have a doorman, is good thing, not a bad one.

Had a very nice dinner, with kids. Friendly service! A bit overpriced but we really enjoyed

Yelp
Should be six stars. One of the nicest restaurants I've been to in France. Cozy, homey rooms, friendly staff, and the best Southwest cooking, just like Grand-mère used to make. We liked it so much we went back again the following week. If you like country cooking and old-fashioned dishes, this is a treat, and possible to do without blowing the bank.
