Best Hot Sauces from Local Restaurants to Spice up Your Shelter In Place Cooking | Eater SF

"At the 20-plus-year San Jose taco icon I found the creamy orange sauce of legend — a nostalgic taco condiment — and you can buy a 12-ounce bottle for $6 at any La Vic’s location." - Luke Tsai

Google
Tried their Beef Quesadillas, truly one of the best I've had in SF. The meat is so tender, packed with flavors. The whole wrap had generous amount of fillings, all that complemented each other beautifully. This is a very fulfilling meal! I'll come back to try the other items. Also the orange sauce that came with the dish was sooo yummy, it had a nice smokey kick with hints of lime. Such an amazing sauce I'm thinking of buying an entire bottle next time!

Google
This location is super rough for Saturday night, so partially my fault. I came by after a night of drinking and La Vic's is one of the few that is open later than others. It took about 40 min to get the burrito after I ordered. $15.26 for super steak burrito was a bit skimpy on the meat/portion sizes It is super slow and packed during this time. Parking can be super tough. In my eyes, definitely not worth the wait.

Google
The super flour quesadilla with asada is the way to go! I always make a stop here whenever I’m in town. So glad to see this place still going strong, the food is always delicious and the staff are consistently friendly. Highly recommend!

Google
Great place for a quick bite - not a true “restaurant” but more of a hang-out. Lots of choices, Super Taco is only $6 with whatever meat or Veggie-style, but get the orange sauce, it has a kick, get 2, orange is good! Not much of a wait.

Google
Flautas are excellent. Chile relleno is okay. A solid spot all around.

Google
Such a disappointment. Moved to the Midwest a few years ago. Whenever I'm in town here I gotta get all the burritos and breakfast burritos. So, I go to La Vics yesterday for a breakfast burrito and orange sauce fix. They charge over a dollar to add cheese now when other taqueria just include cheese as part of the burrito. That in itself put me off. Then I get into the burrito and don't really see any cheese. I bring it up to the counter to ask if they forgot it cause I wanna get what I paid for. Lady behind counter grabs a fork and digs into the top and actually had to search for it herself. Then she sees it kinda hiding in the side of the tortilla. Then, the guy in the kitchen holds up a little sliver of cheese and smiles at me like he did me a favor. So, barely any cheese for a ridiculous up charge. To add insult to injury, the price of the burrito on my receipt was fifty cents more than what they have posted on the board. I feel ripped off. I won't be returning to La Vics ever again. The orange sauce isn't worth it.

Google
I’ve visited this restaurant a couple of times with friends, and it’s become a must-visit spot for us. The food is consistently great, and the atmosphere is welcoming. Among all the items we’ve tried, the chips and pineapple juice stand out as absolute must-try dishes — fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Every visit has been a satisfying experience, and I highly recommend this place for anyone looking for tasty food and a chill vibe. Sharing some pictures of what we ordered to give you a glimps

Google
This location brings back great memories from high school. My friends and I used to come here a lot. My siblings and I also frequented this La Victoria location in downtown San Jose. The only issue with this place is you can never find parking. The best thing to do is park far away and walk over or just Uber here. This place is open late and the food is good. I'm just used to homemade Mexican food which is even better but this place gets a pass. The orange sauce they gave is too good to the point that they sell it in big bottles for you to take home. They started the orange sauce trend over fifteen years ago. It had lard or an animal product at first and the people that don't eat last such as myself put in suggestions. The owner or manager took it into consideration. They made a vegetarian sauce and then I think the sauce is vegan now! Yay! All inclusive.

Yelp
Wanted some Mexican in downtown San Jose and found this place on yelp. Super un assuming because it was a house But this was one of the best places I've eaten at for Mexican food. Staff were super nice and helpful. I went with a friend Wednesday night and they were somewhat busy, maybe 4 parties in the restaurant. We both got enchiladas, I got the chicken one and they were absolutely delicious, we both ate them super quick and the sauces were both really good. Felt very homey because was in a house. Would love one of these in Michigan.

Yelp
Do not order anything closed like a burrito. They will not give you what you ordered. For example, I ordered a super burrito, they gave me a regular burrito on 5 separate occasions. I only keep ordering because of the orange sauce. tldr: want food? dont order. want orange sauce, ok sauce bottle only
google avatar

Yelp
Fast and efficient workers, the carne asada had an interesting after taste to the meat. Nachos are usually my go to but this place uses the cheap yellow nacho cheese instead of real cheese, chicken and the guac was super flavorful though. Their hot sauce they provide on the side is very good. Downside to this spot is parking, and also how loud it is with how constant they yell at order numbers to be picked up.

Yelp
Love!!! La Victoria is a San Jo staple. The burritos here are so fire. There is always a line but it moves pretty quickly. On the weekends it gets packed. I like that they stay open later Lady who takes the order is friendly. We always order asada and pastor super burritos. My man n I will cut in half and split so we can have both because both meats are really good!! We love their salsas . Especially their orange salsa. I love that you can buy their orange sauce and take home. This is a must stop whenever I'm in San Jo.

Yelp
There was a ROCK IN MY BURRITO. I almost broke my very expensive veneers, for a $7 bean burrito. I have been coming here for over 20 years and I've never had anything like this happen, but this is a bit mental. There isn't much more to say than there was a ROCK IN MY BURRITO.

Yelp
Had a great time eating after a wine event with a group of 4 people. We were sat immediately since it wasn't busy whatsoever during their dinner rush hours during a Friday night. The place was so clean, but the place was very warm without any ventilation. We wished that the AC was on since it was getting uncomfortable The wait took about 10 minutes and my delivery of the super burrito was correct. It was very filling, delicious, and I was so full. Would come here again.
google avatar

Yelp
Came in for lunch, we got a carnitas super burrito and a carne asada super burrito. Place was busy but the line went by pretty quickly. Service was alright, efficient. The size of the burritos were decent. I did not get to try the carne asada burrito so I will only write about the Carnitas burrito I had. I felt the carnitas were bland but the irange sauce helped remedy that a bit. I felt that there was not enough carnitas in the burrito though. Place did not have enough seats for dine in during my visit.

Yelp
Coming from the Central Valley, I just missed and loved La Vic!! Walking distance from my hotel, service was good and fast, but even better was the food. My buddy's first time trying it and he also enjoyed the tacos from here.
google avatar

Tracy L.

Yelp
This was my first time going to La Victoria's which I know is a staple in the San Jose area. Being a big fan of Mexican food and tacos, I was pretty excited. I would say their food here is average. Wasn't bad but wasn't amazing! I'm used to my tacos coming with the classic onions and cilantro, so having beans and fresh salsa kinda threw me off. I got one carne asada taco and one chicken taco. I will say the tacos come with a lot of filling which is a plus. I ended up having to eat it taco salad style, because the filling kept coming out. The overall service was pretty good.
google avatar

Brian T.

Yelp
Place has fallen off I feel. Known for their orange sauce and super burritos but tonight was disappointing. Food was on the colder side and portions feel skimpy. I got the Carne asada super burrito and every bite just tasted just the flour tortilla. The pastor super quesadilla was sad looking as well. The cheese was cold and not melted for both items. Both meats were hard and dry. The ratio of both fillings were not it. The quesadilla was not filled and had barely any cheese. The orange sauce had to carry but wasn't as good as before. Overpriced for this quantity of food. Came here around 11pm on a weekday so it was quick service. Gotta find street parking.
google avatar

Tasha H.

Yelp
Solid. Burritos are mostly meat, griddled crisp, and even the chicken was juicy and flavorful. Orange sauce is great, salsa has one option and that's spicy so come prepared. Chips are extra and menu prices are reasonable.

Meg H.

Yelp
Poor experience all around. Ordered a quesadilla for here that had guac and sour cream. Received a horrible wrapped burrito to go, with no guac or sour cream that immediately fell apart into a hot mess. Taste was mid at best. Refused to give me free tap water. Blocked off the bathroom so no one could use it.

Yelp
We just got out of a concert at the SJ Civic Center and were craving some food. There was a line, but it went by quickly. We were lucky enough to snag a table for our whole group, but in general there was limited seating. I ordered the Super Burrito with carne asada. They put a lot of meat in, which I really appreciated! Food was great, large portions, fast service, friendly staff, and affordable prices. I'd definitely come back for late-night food!
google avatar

Bharti K.

Yelp
Tried this place recently and I am really impressed with the food. We got vegetarian quesadilla, cheese quesadilla, chips and salsa, cheese and jalapeños nachos. Vegetarian quesadilla was absolutely delicious and my toddler loved the cheese quesadilla. Salsas and sauces here are just delicious and adds so much flavor to the food. It's a self ordering place and you pick up your food when your number is called. Service is really quick and efficient. Place is clean and well kept. They clean the tables after people finish eating so it's easy to find clean tables. Overall a nice place to get some delicious mexican food. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Mira C.

Yelp
These carne asada nachos were not worth it at all.. it's just chips with not enough cheese, a sprinkle of pico de gallo and not even 1/2 a cup of meat. Not worth $14.95..there are so many better options. I think it you want something worth it go for the burrito. The service is pretty quick and friendly so no issues there.
google avatar

T Y.

Yelp
this place can have mixed reviews depending on who you talk to, but when you're hungry, and nothing is open, this place does the job. these days, i always order vegetarian-ish options wherever i go, like a simple bean and cheese burrito when i'm in a rush and just need something. i honestly just throw a bunch of orange sauce over it and its good. the orange sauce keeps me going back
google avatar

Nicole J.

Yelp
Service was good but meat had no flavor only thing good is the orange sauce. I don't think I'll be returning

Benito R.

Yelp
Ordered a burrito through DoorDash and found this huge rock in my burrito they're lucky I didn't shatter my teeth I thankfully was barely biting in and felt it scrape my tooth. I'm extremely disappointed and will never order from them again. If any dental issues arise from this they will know
google avatar

Saanvi S.

Yelp
Good place to eat late night/after a night out! This was pretty filling and just what I wanted after feeling hungry. Service was quick but some days it takes a bit longer. We were able to snag the last empty table (sometimes it's impossible) near the cash register, but it was still hard to hear what number was being called for the orders. I recommend NOT coming by yourself since outside is a little bit sketchy.
google avatar

Alisa B.

Yelp
This location is almost always busy since it's frequented by SJSU students. Limited seating, so I recommend only coming here if you plan to get takeout. I used to always come here for the Super Flour Quesadilla (with orange sauce of course). Super Nacho Fries are pretty decent here too. But nowadays, I've been into their Carne Asada Burritos! Get it super if you want guac and sour cream. For drinks - I loooooove the horchata and watermelon aguas frescas here! Guilty pleasure always.
google avatar

Annabelle R.

Yelp
This is the original restaurant location I used to frequent when I was an SJSU grad student... and that's the main clientele here, which is to be expected, since it's right at the edge of campus. Unfortunately, the mobs of students means longer wait times here as well. The wait for my order was about 20 minutes on a Sunday just before midnight. You'll find two levels of seating inside, but only if the top level is open, which it wasn't during my recent visit, making it a bIt uncomfortable inside with so many guests crammed into a small space, most standing around waiting for orders. Seating is limited, but at least there are countertop standing tables to eat at. The interior's not as modern-looking as other La Vic locations, and it's always been a bit stuffy inside this restaurant, but it's manageable. The steak quesadilla was fine, the taste consistent with what I usually get at La Vic (needs that orange sauce for maximum flavor and spice). But a couple of the steak pieces inside were inedible, plus I ordered for dine-in purposefully, because I wanted an actual quesadilla, and they ended up serving it to go, wrapped and folded like a burrito, which I specifially did not want them to do... why else would I dine in with a bunch of college kids?!? Not a deal breaker though, it still satisfied my late night cravings this past Sunday, and I love that they're open till the wee hours. In fact, you'll probably only find me here if the other nearby La Vic locations are closed. My recent experience reminded me of why this is my least preferable option. On top of that, parking is almost nonexistent on most days.

Maleiha S.

Yelp
Love coming here with friends, it's just a chill spot to go to after getting drunk. The outside area can be a little sketchy at night but I just come with a large group of friends

Ana C.

Yelp
Always the best!!! I moved back to SJ last year after growing up here and just came by today after No Kings and grabbed tacos. I forgot how amazing they are!!! The best...and with orange sauce. YUM I am sooooo glad they are still around!!! A very nice family owns La Vic and know that you are supporting a legendary small business.
google avatar

Laura D.

Yelp
Great food, quick and clean establishment... Love the orange sauce. The chicken tacos were great and the super burrito was yummy. Carne Asada great!!!!!
google avatar

Aaron T.

Yelp
I definitely cannot recommend this Taqueria. I paid $20 for a tiny Super Burrito that was dry and tasteless--definitely not worth the price. To make it worse, I was charged $2.25 for some stale chips. Super disappointing experience overall. I won't be coming back.
google avatar

Steve D.

Yelp
Guac has a sour taste and orange sauce has a strong vinegar taste I got Al Pastor and it's juicy but slightly lack flavor Fries was not crispy and slightly soggy Food get the job done but I do not think it has the best orange sauce. I do recommend everyone to try once to see if it's something you like. Unfortunately, it's not for me
google avatar

Jacob R.

Yelp
(2.5 out of 5) (Hayward and San Jose) The food here is not good, a 1/5, the ambiance at the new Hayward place isn't bad, and the service is alright, but the orange sauce... 5/5! I'd come here just to get the orange sauce then go to another restaurant and actually get food! When you come get the orange sauce.. let them know Rothyy sent you!
google avatar

Merci M.

Yelp
Heads up: For vegans; you have one option veggie anything/ everything. There are no substitutes meats. For pescatarians friends, there is not seafood substitute. Ordered a horchata, took only a small sip and it was great. Homeless person was thirsty so I gave it to him. Next time will order another. Ate the veggie tacos for super late night dinner, only thing that was opened past 11pm, thankfully. The tacos are spicyyyy so beware, even mild. I think it's the pico de gallo. The bean and rice were flavorful because of the add on, but the cheese and orange sauce were go to dip on everything. Even brought sauce to go. Didn't take pictures of my food, oops.
google avatar

Marcello M.

Yelp
La Victoria is the spot for simple, satisfying eats and most importantly, their legendary orange sauce. I ordered the basic cheese and jalapeño nachos for just $6, and while the nachos were solid, the real star was the orange sauce. As Guy Fieri would say, "You could put this on a flip-flop, and it would taste good!" This sauce is the ultimate game-changer, elevating even the simplest dishes to something unforgettable. Whether you're a local or just passing through, La Vic's orange sauce is a must-try. I'll definitely be back mainly for that sauce! Service was fast today but I came late in the night. Location look and feel is the same, classic taqueria in a house.
google avatar

Derek L.

Yelp
I've heard all about the orange sauce for awhile and when I was in the area, I had to stop by. The tacos are definitely on the pricier side at around $5 so I decided I might as well get a tostada which are $7. I like how there are many meat options but note that lengua (tongue) is an extra $1.75 One tostada is enough for me since I don't eat a ton anymore but I only found that out after I got 2. The lengua was very tender and the tostada comes with a heaping of meat, lettuce, cheese, avocado, and a slice of tomato. The orange sauce is definitely initially spicy but cools down after a bit. Accepts credit card. Street metered parking or nearby ParkSJ garages. 7 minutes for meter is $0.25. Garage is free for 1st 90 min.
google avatar

Thien D.

Yelp
My partner and i recently got lavic. Around 5 am, we started to have bad cases of diarrhea and abdominal cramps. If it were just me, i would totally shrug it off and went on with my day. However, since we both got sick, i feel obligated to let others know, so yall can avoid this location. I never get food poisoning from other locations, but this one is definitely bad.
google avatar

Dominic N.

Yelp
I loved: $5 Lengua super corn quesadilla I like: $6 Carnitas super taco Honestly been going here for years. The orange sauce here is amazing, I put it on everything it's so tasty. The lengua is so much better #goodeats than the carnitas it doesn't need the sauce but the carnitas definitely does. If you eat in, you can ask for a bottle and drown your food in it if you'd like, otherwise they give you these small to go cups which is honestly fine but I like keeping them to put on other food. Sitting indoors is small relative to the amount of people that come here. It's super popular but a lot of people do takeout so I've never had an issue finding a place to eat.
google avatar

Krupa T.

Yelp
The food was really good! The taqueria had similar vibes to Mexico City. We went around 10 and they were fast and good quality food. Make sure to get the orange salsa. The service was good and quick. Better than your regular fast food options.

Bao N.

Yelp
somehow I got no beans no pico no guac extra cheese extra sour cream in my burrito like did someone went of vacation before packing my order?
google avatar

Buck K.

Yelp
Really disappointing experience. I tried to order a super carnitas burrito and drink and the cashier rang me up for a super taco. I caught the mistake and specified I wanted a super burrito. Problem solved, right? Well, I got my order and it was a normal burrito. Rice, beans, meat - not even any of their signature orange sauce, and dry as hell. No salsa either. I went back up to tell them they made a mistake. I figured remaking my meal would be too much to hope for and I was right. The cashier tried to blame me, then suggested I buy some sour cream and guac to stick into the burrito myself. Which, I agreed, at this point I was just desperate to get some moisture in there. But she told me it would be 5 dollars! The price difference between a regular and a super is one dollar. I'd be happy to pay that, even two just to be done with it, but paying 5 so I can fix their mistake myself? Highway robbery. 2 stars because the drink was pretty good. Honestly ruined my night. Don't think I'll be coming back here. Mistakes happen but the rudeness and charging me extra because they fucked up seals it for me. Good Mexican food is everywhere in the bay area, so why settle for this?

Arthur N.

Yelp
I dont know what happen to this place. Its seems like all the locations taste horrible now. I went here the other day and man the tacos tasted way off. The food no longer taste like what it used to be. The carne asada was average and the lengua was pure trash. The orange sauce doesn't even look or taste the same. This is probably my last time supporting this place. I have to agree with most people who have dined here in the past. This place is really now just the drunk food spot because the quality no longer matters if you're drunk

Mark L.

Yelp
Very disappointed ! My girlfriend wanted to get a burrito. She likes the ones here. I wanted to try the enchiladas. Bad decision ! What I got was 3 flower tortillas. Stuffed with Dry pieces of beef. Topped with Cheese. NO sauce whatsoever. Worse enchilada ever . would rather have Taco Bell Mexican Pizza !
google avatar

J F.

Yelp
I got the Super burrito bowl and was not disappointed at all! My daughter loved the super asada taco and said, "didn't need the sauce" whaaaaa!?!?! My wife loved her super asada burrito. La Vic Sauce....saucy as always. Keep doing what yall do!!
google avatar

Karen S.

Yelp
Overhyped. This place is a rip off. They charge for any extra salsa, chips are terrible.
google avatar

Huey N.

Yelp
I recently got a breakfast burrito and a taco. I added potatoes to the breakfast burrito for $3, because it's not really a breakfast burrito otherwise. This was a good call because it probably toned down the chorizo flavor which can sometimes overpower the breakfast burrito. In all my years, this was the first time I ordered an actual taco from La Vics. I wanted to try the milanesa. It was surprisingly good; the pico added a good amount of acidity. I'm in the camp that usually feels less than neutral about La Vics, but this visit was pretty decent. Maybe this location is just better than San Pedro. The orange sauce was extra spicy too.
google avatar

Fiona T.

Yelp
One super burrito cost $13.62. I asked for it cut in half to share with a friend and we were both satisfied. Not hungry after but I still had a little room left. The guys in the group had their own burritos and couldn't finish them. The La Vic's sauce is good. My friend would buy 2 at a time to take home so he'd have some on hand
google avatar

nick l.

Yelp
End of a chapter. Used to come here all the time during college; good burritos and quesadillas for a great price. Now it's practically double the cost, the food is nothing special, the chips taste like they are from lunchables and the orange sauce has turned into a bartering system (good luck asking for sauce to go if they gave you a bottle to use while in the building). Not sure if management changed or the COVID years got to them or what.
google avatar

Eric E.

Yelp
Very generous amount of food with more than enough cheese sauce. Very filling. I will be coming back to try other items
google avatar

Fa S.

Yelp
45 min for a quesadilla! They cannot handle mobile orders. I hear the ring of the orders coming in. In the meantime the online customers wait. Manage this by turning off. Never coming back!
google avatar

Rudy E.

Yelp
I don't know, but this sauce is the best sauce I have ever tried is delicious the same as every other product but this location is the best the girls are awesome on customer service make u feel at home Super Flour Quesadilla Super Flour Quesadilla Regular Taco tostada Plato de steak orange sauce to die for
google avatar

Tiger W.

Yelp
Food - got a carne asada burrito with no beans. Meat and rice was flavorful, but pretty ordinary. Drenched it with the famous orange sauce and the burrito was 5x better :-) Value - typical for the area, but you can find similar things for more value Ambiance - pretty dang loud, don't go if you're looking for a quiet place to eat
google avatar

Marianna G.

Yelp
Talk about whitewashed tacos. Not a real authentic mexican joint has beans and pico de gallo in a taco. If you like it like that then this is for you.
google avatar

Rachel Y.

Yelp
The restaurant is located close to downtown San Jose and across from a university. I went to the place and it is pretty fast paced and quick with the orders! It was a little smaller than the other places and inconvenient with parking, but the food was still pretty good!
