"Splendid high vaulted timber ceilings and huge floor-to-ceiling windows reminiscent of a conservatory overlooking the garden: the scene is set in this well-known culinary landmark. Matthijs Bartman rolls out modern, enticing dishes illustrated by pastrami of bazadais beef, smoked beetroot and blueberries or a more classical choux pastry stuffed with tonka bean diplomat crème, yuzu caramel and mango sorbet… A traditional lineup with a modern twist, presented in two eater-friendly priced menus. Enthusiastic and delightful front of house team." - Michelin Inspector

Excellent quality of food ! Great set menu for €29.90! However, the service was quite bad. Friendly and welcoming staff but slow service, we had 5 different waiters who mixed up/forgot our order so we waited quite a while. Not just us but other tables too. We've been here before and not had a problem with the service. So would definitely go back again because the food is great !

Two adults and a baby. Food came fast and was really tasty. They made an effort ro switch rice to potatoes for kids menu and fish was done really well. We ordered a drymeat and cheese Platter and followed by the antricote staek and the basque beef cheek in wine goulash with a side dish of risotto. Steak was amazing and much bigger than 200gram. Pepper sauce amazing. Goulash was delicious. Very heavy but all broke up into strings and had a really fruity wine sauce. The risotto was very strange and not what I expected with cold tomato inside and more cheese and not served hot. We took the Spanish flan for desert and it was an great great dinner. All three waiters spoke amazing English and was fast and we couldn't MOVE when we had to leave... definitely recommend. We booked.

There is so much to say about our visit to this 'restaurant.' We were looking for a quick bite and, from the outside, the restaurant menu looked good and simple. We went in and waited for the two busy serving staff to ask for a table, which we were offered soon enough. The staff were very nice and responsive, despite being clearly overwhelmed by the size of the restaurant. There were only two staff that we saw during dinner and they were running constantly... except when an amusing door near our table would get stuck and refuse to open wide enough to allow them to bring in trays of food. The food was... interesting. The soupe de poisson was chunky and gritty unlike any soup or bisque that I've had before. My wife ordered mussels, which were sunburnt orange after having been left under a heat lamp for way too long. The mussels were coated with a pretty unusual looking lumpy grey 'gravy.' There were fries, if you can call them that. They were possibly the limpest fries that I've ever seen. We got a salad that had a mystery white vegetable that wasn't artichoke or squash... and a bunch of wilted lettuce. I ordered sardines and, fortunately, they're really hard to mess up. The baguette and wine were good. At one point, while cleaning a table, one of the servers dropped a plate of shrimp heads. He picked up the plate, but the heads remained on the floor for the remainder of our evening at the restaurant. The highlight of the meal was when I spotted a cockroach climbing down the wall next to my wife, possibly aiming to reach the shrimp. She bravely blew at the visitor and it retreated for a while, then later scurried down and into the wainscotting next to us. At the end of the meal, I glanced under the table and was shocked to see dead parts of cockroaches scattered all along the baseboard. I took a picture but will NOT post it here to spare other viewers from the experience. A least they (and there were many of them) were dead, I guess. Unfortunately, this restaurant is both a roach motel and a tourist trap. From what I saw, it should be shut down and completely fumigated. The ownership should probably not be allowed to open a restaurant ever again.

Food was delicious. allowed to share 3 sets among 4 of us who are not that hungry. It was more than enough for us and every dish was delicious. server was attentive and manager / boss? of restaurant came around every course to ask if everything was ok. It is cooler to sit inside in the summer.

92/100 - overall a great meal, great service and great price. Good sample of Basque cuisine. They do not accept reservations and can have a long waiting time, so get there well before the evening service (starts at 20:30). Menu de pays for 2 ppl @ €21.90 per person: Basque plate 7/10 Piquillos farcis 8/10 --- Chipirons à l'ancres 8/10 Poullet à la Basque 9/10 --- Goats Cheese with blackberry compote 6/10 Koka d'Amatxi 8/10 The Cotê Gascone Moilleux was amazing @€25 per bottle - recommended if you like sweet white - very drinkable with vanilla, citrus and banana notes. Would definitely revisit to try the other things on the menu!

Very good restaurant with very friendly staff all of whom spoke good English. The set menu at €29 was delicious, the squid & the fish cooked to perfection. Their white Sangria is unusual & really good, aromatic & light, a change from the usual red. Set in a slightly quieter street this restaurant is well worth a visit. Recommended.

Google
EXCELLENT! So I rarely ever review but the negative review from others spurred me on. We made a reservation and had to wait outside (there was nowhere else it is very small and was packed for Bastille day) for 5 minutes which is very common at many good restaurants in the U.S. after being seated we did have to wait a bit to get waited upon, again it was a packed house on a holiday. As a Chef I understand the challenges. However the food was worth the wait. We had octopus ceviche, persillade and sea bream , all cooked perfectly and seasoned to perfection. No salt and pepper on the table? Please get over it, ask if you want some. The owners were working on site and were very kind. Very small intimate and romantic restaurant. I highly recomend.

Google
It is clearely a tourist trop restaurant. Cooking is really not interesting. We paid 92€ for 2 persons. We drunk one bottle of gas water, one beer and one soft. 2 starters and one main course. And it was not very good. Way too expensive for such cook you can find much better and you will get the desert for the same price!

Yelp
Wonderful food great service. The staff was exemplary went way out of their way for us. One person in our party was a vegetarian and they made a special effort to give her a memorable meal.

Yelp
Fun staff, great service and wonderful food. Recommended by my taxi driver in Lourdes, a must go restaurant. Love the vibe, had the paella and it was great! Authentic, just right flavor. Definitely worth the visit.

Yelp
What a great find! Our group of 6 was met by friendly & helpful staff. 2 couples ordered from the fixed price menu & enjoyed everything! The fish soup was puréed with no chunks of seafood, but very tasty. The seafood plate had cod, shrimp & squid. The squid was prepared perfectly & everything else tasted yummy too. The red peppers stuffed with cod was very good. The caramelized sauce on the flan was the best I've ever had! One couple ordered the paella & said it was very flavorful. The place fills up fast, so I'd advise gettin there early. We were all very happy with our choices & would definitely come back.

Yelp
Just an hour or so above the French-Spanish border is the lovely town of Saint Jean de Luz. I can imagine it's fantastic during the summer, but even on a rain soaked winter day, we spotted surfers just off the coast. We meandered the streets, reviewing each menu with my heart set on Paella. When you're this close to the border and in the Basque region, you definitely don't want pizza. Step down into La Vielle Auberge where you'll be greeted in either French, Spanish or English - a menu for each language. (I was pleased that English was the last assumed language for us!) Our server didn't speak much English, but we all worked well together. She seemed to try to steer us away from the Paella, stressing that it would take 20 or more minutes, but we weren't swayed. In a lot less time than anticipated we were facing a large plate of Paella filled with chicken, sea food and large shrimp. I was disappointed not to see any chorizo, but the chicken was very tasty and made the dish. It was the most flavorful chicken ever! We enjoyed the house wine - he the red and I the white and found it enjoyable enough for the meal. The atmosphere is casual and family oriented. I wouldn't recommend relying on the English menu to be an exact translation of what's on the menu, but it's close enough. The price was reasonable, and the servers - a girl and a guy - both cute and friendly. The location is close to the main walkway by the sea and on a side street full of plenty of places to eat, but this one was the one that was full on that rainy, cold, winter day and we enjoyed it.

Yelp
We were in St-Jean de Luz on a jour férié (November 1), which led me to believe that we might have trouble finding a restaurant open for dinner, so I was surprised to discover La Vieille Auberge not only open, but seating guests a little before their 19.00 scheduled opening hour. The restaurant was welcoming and the staff courteous and efficient. Over the course of the enjoyable two-hour dinner, I remarked that I had never seen waiters walk as quickly as those at La Vieille Auberge, whether hustling to the kitchen to pick up food for guests or from the kitchen with same. They all worked together, not simply assigned to one section of the restaurant. My wife had for her main dish one of the house specialties, paëlla, which was a mix of local seafood, chorizo and spiced rice. I had canard parmentier, described in the English-language menu as "duck shepherd pie." We shared an entrée of fish soup and a dessert of tiramisu. All the dishes were very well-made, tasty and well presented. My wife ate every bit of her paëlla, which is unusual for her. The bill was less than €50, but the only wine we had was a glass of sangria before dinner. Even so, I think La Vieille Auberge was good value for money. Clearly, many other people agree with this assessment: virtually every seat in the restaurant was filled tonight, some more than once. If I lived nearby, I would be a regular customer here.
