Tucson’s Best New Restaurants - Eater Phoenix

"Originally a taco truck, La Yaquesita expanded into a sidewalk cafe-style brick-and-mortar. Their quesabirria tacos and consommé are still the star, but this time diners can enjoy a margarita or Mexican beer alongside it." - Jackie Tran

Good place for crab a bite at lunch. Friendly quick service, tasty mex food. Not overly expensive and clean unisex toilet.

Stopped by for lunch and had a wet burrito with chicken. Very tasty although it felt like there was a lot of tortilla (as if it were designed for a bigger burrito or some other dish) as it was thin but double or triple layered in some places. Not a huge deal but made it a bit difficult to cut through. The taste was great and service was fast and friendly. I’m planning to come back and try a few other items in the menu.

While exploring Tucson, my teenager's spontaneous number game led us to an unexpected culinary adventure. After a bit of a detour searching for a restaurant that began with the letter "Y," we found ourselves on 4th Avenue, where destiny intervened and brought us to La Yaquisita. The weather was stunning—a beautiful day—perfect for enjoying a meal on the patio. The ambiance was vibrant yet relaxed, making it an ideal spot to unwind. I decided to try the Birria Shrimp Tacos, and I must say, they did not disappoint. These tacos were a delightful twist on what I had originally craved: a Gobernador Taco. The shrimp were cooked to perfection, tender and infused with flavor, complemented beautifully by the melted cheese and rich consomme. Each bite was a perfect balance of savory and spicy, especially with the addition of grilled jalapeños and fresh green onions, which added a delightful crunch and heat. To top it all off, I paired my meal with an ice-cold beer. The combination of the refreshing drink and the delicious tacos made for a perfect outdoor lunch experience. La Yaquisita truly encapsulated the essence of Tucson dining—casual, flavorful, and unforgettable. If you find yourself in the area, I highly recommend stopping by for a taste of their incredible offerings.

We come here often and the food is delicious. The owner and staff are really nice and friendly. Kevin always remembers us and always a pleasure to be served by him. Today I was surprised they remembered me asking if they had Hennessy and they ordered it and told me they have it now. I ordered the ramen birria and my wife had the Quesabirria tacos and as always amazing.

Google
Great atmosphere, friendly staff, and delicious food. I had the carne asada burro, and it was simply divine. Honestly, one of the best burritos I’ve ever had. 10/10

Google
My new favorite Mexican Restaurant - and it isn’t even a contest. The food is unparalleled perfection. From the homemade chips and salsa that knocked my socks off (not an easy feat with something as ‘simple’ as chips and salsa), to the fajita that is superior to other restaurants (not to mention priced at half their cost), and all tied together with a cozy and warm atmosphere made all the better by the impeccable service. Can’t say it enough: check this place out!!

Google
La Yaquesita is worth going to for the downtown vibe. I went there and ordered two Karamelos to-go. The waiter was nice and I got my food in about 5 minutes. Price to portion ratio is higher compared to Mexican restaurants I wouldn’t want to relax and chill at but I definitely think it’s worth it for the ambiance at La Yaquesita plus they have large outdoor seating area. Thanks! -Chase.

Yelp
My salad was delicious I'm vegetarian so I had them sub the chicken for mushrooms and bell peppers. My husband had the carne asada burrito which is not carne asada. He immediately recognized the flavor. The service was nice, polite and prompt. Sitting area is only outside, I didn't see any tables indoors. Not sure I enjoyed it enough to return or recommend

Yelp
Great food, prompt service, nice location ... we sat outside , people watching on 4 th avenue.

Yelp
La Yaquesita is a great addition to the 4th Avenue dining scene. I've been here several times now and my favorite items have been the tortilla soup and chicken flautas. Prices are great and the staff is fast and friendly.

Yelp
This spot is solid if you are in a hurry and want a decent taco. The ambiance is very cute and a great location. The service was friendly and fast. However, there are better taco spots in town.

Enoying a patio in the middle of December was a special treat. Weather was perfect and the seating was comfortable.

Yelp
We came here for lunch because it was near 4th Street which we wanted to explore afterwards. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Since it was hot outside we chose to sit inside. The inside was quite cozy with just a few tables. We ordered one of the chicken burritos, a grilled fish taco, the Lorenza taco with pork, and a small bowl of pozole soup. The Lorenza taco was delicious. The combination of flavors worked really well. The fish taco was very good too. The soup was average. The chicken burrito was just okay. It was very heavy. Our server was helpful and attentive as we were very thirsty and she was good about refilling our waters. Glad we found this restaurant on our trip. Street parking can be a little challenging to find.

Yelp
Nice corner location. Outside seating area. Seating available inside as well. Small but cozy. Staff was polite and attentive. The decorations are all about Tucson. The food is delicious. Came out hot. The presentation was beautiful. The flavor was very flavorful. Definitely enjoyed it. I recommend this place.

Yelp
Cute little place with large patio and limited inside dining. All food was on point with perfect sized portions. Staff was great and drinks were excellent. Also loved the churros for dessert. Adding this place to my short list.

Yelp
Loved this place! The service was nice, the atmosphere was so cool and the food was excellent. Most especially the Quesobirria tacos and the Sonoran hotdog!!

Yelp
I would really give a 3.5, but that is not available. The setting is a solid 5, I have always loved this location no matter what restaurant is in business. There is shade and a great view of what's happening in 4th. The food is not really that good, but not terrible. The food lacks flavor and the chips are from a bag, probably from restaurant depot. The service is good. So I will be back, but just for a snack and the view.

Yelp
La Yaquesita is quiet and cozy, and is nested right in the corner of all the 4th ave. action. It has a solid menu of traditional Mexican food, with a modern twist. I had quick and friendly service. I ordered a baked potato with carne asada, sour cream, pico, salsa and a pepper. The potato was buttery and soft and the carne was super savory. I recommend this place and I plan to come back.

Yelp
We enjoyed sitting on the patio with our dog and watching all the activities on the corner. Our food was delicious. Salad was filled with black beans, corn, asada beef, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, tortilla strips and salsa with a chipotle ranch dressing. The beef was so flavorful. Burrito was a great size and also filled with guacamole. Downside was our server was also apparently the bartender and service was terrible.

Yelp
Little place downtown with friendly service. Looks rundown but clean. Came here to try as the photos of the food looked inviting and with 5 star reviews. It was okay not great. Also I wasn't happy when my order came and didn't look like the picture.

Yelp
Absolutely AMAZING food and service!!!! My family and I are from out of town and were walking around the area when we came across this restaurant. We didn't realize they were closing about 30 mins before coming in so we all made the decision to leave but the waitress was SO kind and kept telling us it's okay for us to stay. I highly recommend this place! Food is 10/10 and the service was 10/10 everything phenomenal - we definitely will be back!

Yelp
19NOV2022: Fantastic new edition to downtown Tucson, especially this golden location on the corner on 4th and 6th! This place has changed hands a few times over the years, and La Yaquesita's is a testament to the location hosting increasingly better restaurants. 71 degrees out, corner table people watching all made better with quality food, drinks, and great service. Began with a couple Negro Model's with lime ($4 each), chips and salsa, then advanced to an order of the Quesabirria tacos, an à la carte carne Asada taco on corn, a side of beans and ultimately two margaritas ($7 X 2) and a glass of Kendall Sauvignon Blanc ($7) to close it out (For those counting drinks, there are two of us!). Bottom line, food was clean tasting, flavorful and the service was a solid 5. Margaritas were delicious and of note the limes were some of the freshest I have come across in the winter. Not to sound thrifty, but in managing expectations, the lunch above with 20% gratuity was ~$65 during these inflationary times. One tip, while the side of beans was tasty....at $4.00 (and also $4.00 for a side of rice), recommend opting for another side taco - most side tacos ran around $4.50 so it's a nice sacrifice for a greater good! Cheers La Yaquesita and thank you for coming to downtown! See you soon.

Yelp
A coworker and I had lunch here, and I'm so glad La Yaquesita has joined the Fourth Ave scene! My coworker has been multiple times already, and is a big fan, so I followed his lead and got the Yaquesita Bowl, which comes with your choice of meat, rice, beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, guacamole, sour cream, and a side of salsa. Both he and I got it with carne asada. The combination of ingredients felt well-balanced, fresh, and bright. The bowl was super flavorful, and surprisingly light! It was a great lunch that didn't leave me overly full or feeling sleepy when we went back to work. I also want to call out the awesome service, which was friendly and very fast. Our server was great! The patio was really pleasant, though the traffic noise was quite loud (just something to keep in mind, but not under their control at all).

Yelp
If you are in Tucson Az you must try this place. My hubby and I decided to try it because of the good reviews. Parking was a bit tricky we did park a block away and walked it was definitely worth it . They sat us down right away served chips and salsa that tasted really good the chips had a nice seasoning . We shared the food We had 2 quesabirria tacos And an adobada Burrito and for dessert we had the churros. Everything was delicious very well seasoned and tasty. Service was great they were very attentive. One of the best places we've had. We will definitely come back. When we are back in town.

Lauren B.

Yelp
We had the best tacos of our lives here. When we asked around, several people pointed us here for the best tacos in Tucson and they were right! Staff is very friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was great. We sat inside, but there's also an outdoor patio. We highly recommend

Yelp
Great food, great service, nice patio, and literally the most beautiful tres leches/dessert in general I've ever been served. I mean look at it!
google avatar

Yelp
You MUST get the birria tacos when you come here! They were so delicious and perfectly crispy on the outside. Haven't taken a drive up to Tucson in a while and I was pleasantly surprised by how lively it's gotten. This restaurant seems like it's newer, and we luckily came at in the early afternoon so it was slow. Our server was wonderful and the margaritas she made were so refreshing. Great experience that makes me want to take trips to Tucson more often just to experience the birria taco again.

Yelp
What does a vegan do when dining in an authentic Mexican restaurant where the beans are made with lard? Order a yummy veggie burrito. Great salsa. I don't fuss over not having "vegan options", as long as the kitchen is willing to accommodate.

Kelly M.

Yelp
Good food, reasonable prices. Nice patio. Service was decent. We were there at an odd time so there wasn't a lot of staff.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious great favored food. Quick service. Friendly staff. At a good price point. Love to see local woman owned business thriving.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food but not much flavor, very friendly staff and very informative on the food, generous portions for the soup. Was a bit loud with the music but not too bothersome.
google avatar

Thomas B.

Yelp
Just passing through on a trip and had food delivered via grubhub to my hotel. Quick service with great food for a weary traveler. I hope to visit the restaurant in person on my return. Highest recommendation.

Thomas G.

Yelp
It is tight inside but great food and flavor. I had a nice date and the vibe helped. The staff were working hard to do a goodjob.

Yelp
Went to visit Tucson over the weekend and tried this place out because of its amazing reviews and it did not disappoint! We went around 8:30pm on a Friday and it wasn't too busy so we were seated immediately. The server brought out chips and salsa as an appetizer. For entrees, we got the quesabirria taco plate and four tacos (carne, adobada, chicken, and shrimp). I'd never tried quesabirria before, but who wouldn't love a taco and quesadilla combination. My favorite taco was the adobada, but everything tasted incredible and none of the meats were dry. Anyone looking for a quick bite of delicious Mexican food should definitely check this place out!

Yelp
Wonderful, authentic Mexican food & outdoor seating. 1st time there, enjoyable. Friendly employees.
google avatar

Matt J.

Yelp
Incredible all around. We did the outdoor seating and it was great. We would absolutely return next time we are in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Perfectly situated on the corner of 4th Ave and 6th St. They offer indoor and outdoor dining. We had the quesabirria and the Sonoran Dog. The food was delicious! We're definitely going back to try other menu items! Gotta give this place a try!
google avatar

Chloe M.

Yelp
This place was great. Kind and considerate staff, my margarita was Amazing, and the Yaqueburro was the BEST thing I've ever eaten. Highly recommended by me.

Ulises S.

Yelp
The food was great over all, service was even better. The food was good food not too greasy, good portions. The drinks were delicious and not too strong or too light. The mood was pretty cool we were dining outdoor area with our Pit. Shout out to Jose best server ever and I forgot the young lady's name but she offer some water for our pit so that was nice. With everything I spent about $89

Yelp
Excellent service, the food was very delicious and reasonably priced. Great Place!!! And this is from someone who doesn't eat Mexican food! We would return without hesitation!

google avatar

Jeremy L.

Yelp
Overall, great patio people watching on historic 4th Ave while drinking cocktails and eating chips/salsa. The staff hustled and we're very friendly, they kept us filled with cocktails and beers.
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
Great service, excellent food. I didn't get photos of the menu or our meals. I had a La carte tacos on corn tortillas and they were full of meat and got off the press! Their salsa and seasoned chips were a great start. Their rolled tacos are made in house and my daughter loved them. Atmosphere felt authentic. Would go back.

Ashleigh G.

Yelp
10/10 this place was phenomenal! Especially the fried fish tacos! The service was wonderful as well. We were a large party but them being a smaller restaurant were able to easily accommodate us.

Jordyn K.

Yelp
Food is great, service is good, vibe overall just great definitely come try the birra burro, does not disappoint

Yelp
Wow, we were pleasantly surprised at just how good the quesabirria and chile rellenos were. Really excellent and worth the trip.
google avatar

Megan G.

Yelp
This is my favorite place to order carryout on 4th ave! My go-to order is carne asada tacos, a side of rice, and churros as a dessert. The kitchen is always quick to have my order ready and it's very affordable! This restaurant is such a great addition to 4th avenue.
google avatar

James B.

Yelp
I had dinner here with a friend. I ordered the Yaqueburro ($13), which came with a consomme dipping sauce. It was very good. Service was casual and friendly. We also ordered a brownie with vanilla ice cream ($6). They were out of ice cream, so they gave us an extra brownie instead. OK, but I would have preferred the ice cream.
google avatar

Mason M.

Yelp
Seriously the best birria tacos and burrito I have ever had. My husband ordered the quesabirrias and I ordered the yaqueburro, which we shared half for half. The birria juice for dipping was amazing! I will dream of my meal for years! The location was great and had a good vibe in the restaurant. Service was great, we were in and out on a Friday night within an hour. Seriously, the yaqueburro...
google avatar

Bethany M.

Yelp
Fantastic!!! Tender juicy deliciousness. Great salsas, and a cup of the beef broth, amazing!
