The Best Hotels in Cape Town for a Truly Local Stay - AFAR

"Located on Church Square in downtown Cape Town’s recently revitalized business district, this boutique arrival from 2019 helped kick-start the neighborhood’s leisure-oriented renaissance. The property’s six signature suites are elegantly furnished with thick draped curtains and original artwork, and on-site amenities include a fragrance boutique and a restaurant serving hearty local dishes such as bobotie. Its central spot places guests within easy reach of acclaimed dining and independent shops." - Mary Holland

Labotessa

"Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe?Labotessa is a narrow, tall, blue townhouse that wouldn’t look out of place in Amsterdam. The hotel is tucked away on historic Church Square, which is full of architectural landmarks, including the Dutch Reformed Groote Kerk. Sunset views are a bonus. What type of travelers will you find here? You don’t really see anyone else, thanks to private elevator access. Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book? There are only six guest suites, two on each floor. They're all high ceilinged, generously sized, and elegantly decorated with French oak floors, petrol-blue walls, crisp white bed linens, jewel-toned velvet sofas, antiques, and commissioned art. Blue subway tiles, pale marble, and Diptyque products jazz up the tiny bathrooms. Above the suites is the Governor Suite, a two-story contemporary penthouse with three bedrooms, a large, open-plan kitchen for entertaining, and a plunge pool. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at?Breakfast is served in Starlings Cafe, an all-day restaurant with a well-established following in suburban Claremont, thanks to its breakfast bowls and organic food. Try a fresh veggie juice, a fruit bowl topped with homemade granola, honey and yogurt, or a pastry. Any other hotel features worth noting? It's breakfast only here, but the hotel is around the corner from Fyn, a restaurant that's earned a cult following for its boundary-pushing Japanese-South African tasting menus. Bottom line: Worth it? Why?This is the first small, luxuriously appointed, designer hotel in this part of the city, and its narrow townhouse architecture and historic square setting gives it an authentic European ambience—with the advantage of South African sunshine and Lion’s Head views." - Billy Brown

Can’t remember a time when we have had an experience better than this as we’ve visited 60|countries and stayed in Aman resorts. From start to finish, Labotessa a perfect. The staff was extremely helpful pre stay in arranging tours, restaurants and overall advice. We stayed in the Presidental Suite and wanted to move in. So many little touches, seriously nothing that they didn’t think of. Daily cheese and meat snacks, stocked fridge and minibar. Delish and healthy homemade breakfast bars and candy. Delicious breakfast and top notch service. The staff was so professional, hospitable and efficient. So attentive but not obtrusive. They even walked us to dinner one night. Shout out to Martiin, Bridget, Claudine, Janek, Taffa, the other wonderful|night Manager who’s name escapes me, the sweet housekeeping staff and every single person we met there. Congrats to Johan the owner for this marvelous creation. Can’t wait to go back!!

Our recent five night stay at Labotessa was a joy! Our room was large, beautifully decorated, and included a stocked minibar and yoga mats. Mornings started off with a delicious made-to-order breakfast with many flexible options, and evenings included a simple beverage service. ||What really sets Labotessa apart, however, is the staff. Every person, from the owners on down, exhibited genuine warmth and was well-informed about our sightseeing activities, dinner plans, and preferences. Many luxury hotels aspire to this level of service, but with only a few rooms, Labotessa can truly implement. ||I would be remiss if I did not mention Bridget in particular. Bridget corresponded with me multiple times before arrival to offer advice and assistance, welcomed us warmly on arrival, and stayed late on our last evening to handle a few final details. She’s a true professional and a lovely human, and I wish her every success in her career. I would not be surprised to find her managing one of the world’s flagship luxury hotels someday.

I rarely write reviews but wanted to make a point to draft this one. My sister, friend and I have traveled extensively for about 30 years and have visited 75+ countries. Without hesitation, we would put Labotessa in the top 5 hotels that we have stayed at in the world. ||The property is the meticulously renovated home of a former governor. The design is beautiful and there has been great attention to detail throughout. We stayed in the Presidential Suite for 4 nights and felt that we were staying in a luxurious townhouse in a sophisticated urban setting. The staff, led by the proprietor, are extremely welcoming and constantly ready to assist with anything, from a special meal in the cafe to a snack in the suite. Our unit had a beautiful kitchen that was stocked with all manner of beverages and a daily array of snacks. ||This is a great alternative to the Mount Nelson Hotel property where we had previously stayed. We were preparing for a three week safari so this was the perfect place to relax, enjoy Cape Town and its many offerings before embarking on the balance of our trip. We loved the peanut butter cookies that they make so the staff made several dozen for us to take on our journey, including a copy of the recipe.||I cannot say enough complementary things about this place and we give it our highest personal recommendation. We hope to return in the future. Grace & Joan R and Caroline M.

We stayed at Labotessa for four nights in May, 2025. The hotel staff was helpful from the day the reservation was made with dinner recommendations and reservations. Upon arrival, they were genuinely kind, gracious, and had little surprises and welcoming touches waiting for us. The property is immaculate, the rooms are very well appointed, and the hotel's design and style is sophisticated and comfortable. Bridget, Martin and all the staff greeted us daily with nothing short of pure professionalism, helpfulness, and a welcome smile. |I've stayed in hotels around the world and this experience rates as one of the best I've ever seen. While many hotels offer service, Labotessa offers true hospitality. A very rare, very welcome, and very beautiful experience.

It is no exaggeration when I say that our stay at Labotessa was perfect. I came to Cape Town to celebrate my birthday and my experience exceeded all of my expectations. Labotessa is like a magical getaway amongst a bustling city. Returning to the hotel in the evening felt like coming home to a personal urban retreat. ||Staff - The attentiveness and care of all of the staff is truly 5-star. As soon as we arrived Bridget gave us such a warm and endearing welcome and she helped me plan a wonderful itinerary for the trip. Claudine treated us like family. She made sure that we had everything we needed. Seeing her every morning was such a pleasure and she demonstrated heart and passion when it comes to her job. All of her suggestions were spot-on, every hotel needs someone like Claudine. The evening attendant/bar tender always greeted us with a warm smile and nice conversation, you can tell he loves his job and giving people a great experience. The attentiveness and care of the staff is at such an elevated level, I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else in Cape Town. ||Food - Everything item that we had at the on-site restaurant was 10/10 delicious, the fact that this was included in the hotel stay is very generous. The quality of the ingredients and preparation was so well executed. Even the coffee/lattes that I had were literally amongst the best I've ever had. The waiter was so courteous and the chef is really doing something special here. ||Hotel room/entryway - Upon entering the hotel, you step into a Diptyque store with delicious smelling aromas and beautiful decor, how luxurious is that? Every inch of the hotel is curated to perfection. You take an elevator that opens right into your room, what a high end experience! The color, decor, finishes of the room are something you would find in a magazine, complete with Diptyque toiletries, they really thought of everything. It felt like having your own personal condo in the middle of the city. The hotel is also in a perfect accessible location to get to all of the main attractions, museums and sights. ||In all, I was really impressed with my stay here and I have pretty high expectations/standards. I give no exaggeration, I cannot even think of something that was unfavorable. I only wish they had more locations around the world, it would be my go-to hotel. Thanks to everyone who helped make our stay memorable and special!

My mom and I had the best stay at Labotessa! Before we arrived we messaged for dinner recommendations and they kindly made reservations for us. Every dinner we had in Cape Town was wonderful! The room itself is a luxurious flat with all the amenities, we never wanted to leave. Everyone was so friendly and hospitable. We can’t wait to return, and/or visit any future locations!

Such a charming little boutique hotel right in downtown — super central, though walking around in the neighbouring area can feel a bit iffy. They’re super quick to reply to emails, and breakfast on the patio is lovely. Rooms are gorgeous, food is delicious, but the real highlight is the amazing staff. Everyone’s so attentive and always checking in to help with plans, meal bookings, or tours. We checked in really late and they still got us the food we wanted through a delivery app. One morning we had an early tour and they made sure we had breakfast to-go without us even asking. They even walked us to our Uber at night to make sure we felt safe. The team is so coordinated — you never have to repeat anything. Truly outstanding place — can’t wait to stay again. Big shoutout to Bridget, Claudine, Tony, Yannick, and Martin!

After spending a few nights at this amazing hotel, I came to realize that Labtoessa is in a class on its own. It’s truly a gem amongst the other luxury boutique hotels in Cape Town. ||I highly recommend this hotel experience based on the excellent customer service from the hotel and restaurant teams. ||Upon my arrival, the hotel team provided white glove customer service from helping me plan my activities around the town (thank you, Claudine and Martin) to the warm welcome and delicious food at the hotel restaurant.||Overall, the hotel team’s attention to detail and excellent service only added to my personal experience and memories. Thank you for everything, Labotessa Team!
