Lagana - Review - Rome - The Infatuation

"“Lagana is the old name for the ancestor of what we know as lasagna. It was a Roman recipe for a flattened, doughy sheet. We’re talking about proud Roman roots and traditions. What I love about this place is the assortment of side dishes. I’m totally bonkers for vegetables.” We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

The reason for a 3 is because of the service. Food is good and the atmosphere is beautiful. Unfortunately the service is really not it. The waiters are rude and not attentive. I had to get up to go ask them for stuff since they decided to look at me and walk away… pasta was also served so messily - not a clean presentation at all… it’s very unfortunate as it ruins the experience a bit in my opinion

Google
We had an amazing experience in a classy looking but not pricy place. The carbonara was incredible. I recommend the millefoglie di calamari con carciofi, never eaten something like this. The service was perfect, they offered us some focaccia to start and some cantucci to end the meal. Price/quantity/ quality absolutely recommended

Google
Amazing food, highly recommend. Staff were incredibly attentive and kind. A wonderful last meal in Roma. Thank you.

Google
This restaurant was recommended by our guide who joined us for supper. We were a party of 5. Let me just say this, the food was incredible. But the service was non existent. We had reservations for 8pm. Got seated after waiting about 10 minutes. It was another half hour before waiter took our order. Other customers came in after us and started receiving their food. Waiter came back another half hour to repeat our order. We did not get our food served until 9:30pm. No one ever came to check on us. Not sure I would return. I gave this restaurant a 3 star simply because of the terrible service.

Google
I thoroughly enjoyed our meal at this 25 year old family run business. I think many of the tourists in the reviews want to be catered to but don’t show that respect back toward the restaurant. If you don’t want to wait, make a reservation. If you are dissatisfied with service or food, communicate that like an adult to the staff. This business stays in Rome when you go home, so catering to locals is a smart move for them. No complaints from me. I had an excellent meal here (hence the empty plates), all the staff we encountered were down to earth and not overly fake like all of the others in the tourist areas. Price was great for what we got. 5/5

Google
One of the best food we had in Rome. Risotto and pasta were great. However, I don't know the reason (maybe we are tourist?) there was a rush about something. It was the first time in my life that I received receipt without asking... I actually understood it was coming (without asking, we were asked coffee and desert, there was a rush)... We unfortunately didn't feel comfortable.. When I paid the bill, we were still having our wine.. Anyway, food was great but something was wrong about hospitality (even there were not directly any behaviour..)...

Google
Our waiter, Roberto, was amazing: attentive without hovering, friendly and helpful. We didn't get a menu -- he just asked us generally what we were interested in and each course he brought us was perfect! The food was excellent. The pasta was the best we had during our 5 days in Italy. Veal saltimbocca was a surprise star.

Google
Lagans was recommended by our accommodation host and it didn’t disappoint. Magnificent food, great atmosphere and very attentive staff. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
We loved this place! Unassuming small gem with great food and people. Lagana was not on my original list of places to eat but was recommended by another couple from previous evening. A very good surprise. We told the owner a couple of appetizers that we liked on the menu and let him surprise us with the rest! Great decision!! Our pasta with seafood was super tasty and the standard al dente. The steak was cooked to perfection. Highly recommend this place to those who want to try great Italian cooking and escape the tourist trap.

Yelp
Found this little gem. I want to give it a 5+.., but can't because .... 1) Took a awhile go get seated. Some of the guests that was seated in the back of the restaurant figured out that we were all Americans that was all put in the back of the restaurant! Is this a coincidence.., maybe... but very interesting! Ambiance is tiny hole in the wall place you might find in an alley. And sure enough that is exactly where we found it! To our surprise the food was delicious! But, they did "accidentally" throw away half of my kids leftover and still charged us full! Not cool... Food: * mozzarella, and tomatoes * Prosciutto, and melon (they forgot figs which as on their menu) * entrée *2 bolognese pasta - great! * pasta with artichoke and bacon with cheese- delicious! Fresh Pasta with each dish. Dessert: * tiramisu * Panna Cota Bottle of wine. I would definitely go back for the food!

Yelp
What a great experience our dinner at Lagana was! Our appetizers (Burrata and Cherry Tomatoes and Prosciutto w/Cantalope Melon) were amazing. The Cacio e Pepe Pastas were Great!!! The veal Scalopini was very tasty. The Chicken dishes were 'just OK'. The desserts (Tiramisu & Apricot Cake) and wine were very good as well. But what made it was the service. We had an AMAZING waiter! An older gentleman who made recommendations and took great care of us! Thanks to him, dinner was 'an experience' - as it really should be! Grazie!!!

Yelp
Fantastic! No other way round describe it. Not only did the food taste unbelievably good, but Memmo (the owner) and Roberto (the waiter) zwere helpful with pairings and recommendations. Small and intimate setting where people gathered, ate and socialized. Would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for amazing meal and dining experience!

Yelp
EXCELLENT! The best Italian restaurants are off the beaten path. This gem is hidden around a corner from the more touristy eateries and you'll find an abundance of locals dining here. Wonderful service and a scrumptious meal. Spaghetti al carbonara was wonderful. We enjoyed the Tagliolino with cheese and pepper even more. Prosciutto starter just melted in your mouth. Our waiter recommended the desert. I'm not sure what it was called, but it was a bowl of mixed fresh fruit with a wonderful sweet sauce and topped with gelato and served with a side of biscotti. We had three bottles of the wine pictured. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
Been here twice, awesome ambiance and the wait service was outstanding. The waiter got my middle one out of her shell to enjoy her food. In fact every time we passed the waiter he would wave at Malie. They accidentally overcharged us. We had no idea until they came to us with the extra money in hand. They did not have to do that but to me that shows the honesty of this restaurant. We will be going back one last time before we leave.

David M.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food. The staff simply brought dishes out for our party to try. Everything was absolutely delicious --carbonara, red sauce pasta, fennel salad! So wonderful

Yelp
I will dream of this meal for the rest of my life. Our hotel recommended this place and it did not disappoint. You could tell that the locals were repeat guest and knew the staff. Simple food done extremely well.

Sean T.

Yelp
We had a great meal here and the owner and his son were hustling between the inside area and outside street tables. We will definitely be returning on the next visit.

Yelp
This little out of the way restaurant is a charming family owned business. We asked them to surprise us with the appetizers and it was literally the best experience. Eggplant, celery salad, prosciutto and melons, mozzarella and tomato salad, bell peppers in a tasty marinade, it was heaven!! The main dishes were good as well. Specify if you want grilled lamb or it will come boiled. This place was great!! And it's out of the way place made it peaceful and really enjoyable.

Yelp
Flawless All courses where prepared perfectly. Service was excellent and staff was very welcoming.

Yelp
This is a small restaurant in a corner of Time, it was recommended to us by a local and we got a great recommendation. We order a mozzarella as an appetizer and, sadly for my review the whole family order pasta, so I can only speak about that in my review. The food was great and the service was exactly as you expected with the owners there all the time, just outstanding. As a welcome, they gave us a small glass of prosecco. They were still setting up their outside tables when we got there and as soon as they had the tables available they moved us out there. Being in a small street or Rome we had dinner at a low light environment. They helped us chose a smooth red wine that would go great with our dinner. Their bread is just to die for by the way. The food was pretty good but the experience was outstanding!

Yelp
Our meal started out fine.... some focaccia, a serviceable salad and spaghetti with clams. Then after a 45 minute wait, we asked about our secondi (veal scaloppini). After we asked they brought it - and it was cold. It must have been sitting in the kitchen for a while. A server came by and asked how it was, and I said it was not even warm. He said nothing and walked away. It was our last meal in Rome, and we were disappointed with the cold dish, and the disappointing service. Until that point, we thought everyone was friendly. This could have been a great meal, but wasn't.

Yelp
Best food I've ever had in my life. The mozzarella actually made me well up it was good. Had the gluten free tomato and mushroom pasta and a hoard of delicious appetizers. If you're in Rome, it would be a huge disappointment to not go to this place. It's the best in Rome this far!
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
First meal in Rome and it did not disappoint. After checking into our Hotel, the owner recommended this place, literally right around the corner from where we were staying and it was perfect. This was a cobbled side street with tables against the wall of another building where cars squeezed through the space between up and the restaurant itself. We ordered a bottle of wine, Cacio e pepe, and a spaghetti carbonara! YUM! Our whole stay in Rome we each ordered these two pasta dishes and this carbonara may have been the best!
google avatar

Lila H.

Yelp
1st meal as soon as we got into Rome. We ate the biggest Lunch I've probably had in my life. The waiter recommended the cantaloupe, proscuitto and buffalo mozzarella. I swear I have never tasted cantaloupe so sweet in my life and that paired with the proscuitto and fresh mozzarella was the best combination of flavors. We got the cacio e pepe pasta and artichoke and mushroom pasta. Both were delicious! For dessert we had fresh cherries and berries and little biscottis and limoncello to end the meal. Everything was fresh and homemade. You could tell locals and familiar faces in the neighborhood eat there all the time.
google avatar

Fred A.

Yelp
pros: pretty good good, no tourists, real Romans speaking real Roman. Cons: stupidly pricey, to a point where you may think they cheated you on the bill. Considering how many fantastic places there are in Rome I would stay away.
google avatar

Jared S.

Yelp
Went there on a whim, it's not a tourist trap for sure. Order the baked lamb and it was amazing. Atmosphere was warm and inviting. Highly recommend. Prices are slightly higher but it's reflected in the food.

Yelp
We ate here on our first night in Rome because it was right near where we're staying. The food was just OK. The service was good and the seating outside was nice - except for the occasional car that would drive by and brush against our table. I had the sliced beef. It might be a traditional Italian meal, but it looked like someone had chewed up a well done steak and put it on my plate. For my family of four, we agreed, nothing special.

Yelp
Amazing food and terrific service. We had a late dinner here and were the only non-Italians there - a good sign! The food was delicious -- we had an Insalata Mista, a Cacio e Pepe, and a Penne Arrabiatta. All were great. The Montelpuciano we drank was wonderful too. Dessert was a yummy rich Tiramisu. They brought us free bread before the meal and free biscotti and limoncello after, which was a nice touch! And the bill was very reasonable at 70 euro for a salad, two entrees, and two glasses of wine each. Great price for the quality and quantity of food!
google avatar

Yelp
Food and service was spectacular. Best meal I had in Rome. Family run operation and very proud of their establishment. If your really lucky, you'll have Sonia take care of you. Ask for the lamb but It's for the guys.

Yelp
When in Roma, find this place. It's off the beaten path, but a great find. Authentic and plentiful. Thank you

Yelp
Best place we ate in Rome. It was right near our hotel and not really even on our radar, but we got in late our first night, asked for a recommendation before heading out, and ended up at Lagana. I got the carbonara and my wife got the cacio e pepe... both were so delicious! Also, the atmosphere was perfect... sat at a table in a quiet alley. There seemed to be a lot of locals dining around us, which is always a good sign in my book. I most definitely recommend giving Lagana a try when in Rome!

Dristi T.

Yelp
This place was very authentic and tasty!! The artichoke and prawns pasta was delicious and full of flavor. The shrimp risotto had a strong flavor but still good. The paccheri with sea bass ragu and prawns was the best meal that we have had in Rome. The meal was both flavorful and aromatic without being heavy. Would highly recommend!!

Yelp
This place really rolls out the red carpet. Well, at the mention of some friends from the States that is! Our friends recommended we go see them, and they instantly took away our menus and said, we'll bring you out our picks! I'm all for that! And the array of food that appeared on our table was insane. For appetizers we had eggplant, zucchini, mozzarella, fennel, calamari and anchovies and cantaloupe. The eggplant, zucchini and mozzarella being my favorite. That mozz was fresh as fresh can be... and the veggies were grilled perfection. The pasta choice was great because it was something I would have never picked. It had a nutmeg flavor with red sauce and mushrooms. After all the apps, it was hard to eat a lot, but you know, I found room in my stomach! The next course, if you can believe it, was probably the best of them all! It was Veal with potatoes in lemon sauce. I could have licked the plate clean with that lemon sauce. Incredible! We ended with the most refreshing lemon sorbet and a couple shots of limoncello. Oh, I can't forget to mention the excellent bottle of Chianti we shared. Just a lovely evening!

Yelp
By far the best place we ate at in Roma!!! We ate here three times during our 9 days in Roma and we could have easily gone another couple of times. This is a little local place owned by a family. The owner is great Mimo (I think that is the spelling) is great. He is a little crazy like most Italians but a lot of fun. His kids and nephews are all in the business which makes it fun. You are well taken care of here and there is a very authentic feel to everything that comes out of the kitchen. Everything is cooked to order and if you get an antipasti you will end up with 4-6 plates of stuff. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who doesn't want a very tourist restaurant. Many of the people who eat here a Romans and are there every single day.

Yelp
Stumbled across this gem while lost in Rome. I think God was looking down on me because I had the most amazing meal here! First, the people are so hospitable. I don't speak a word of Italian and the people who work here don't speak much English but we totally made it work. I think the owner was there. He was so attentive to me and supplemented my meal with tastes of this and that - gratis. Second, food was so good. Owner picked this amazing wine that I loved. I sampled some delicious rigatoni dish and ordered the pasta and clams. So light. So amazing. The bread was also so good. Owner served me berries and limoncello to finish. It was amazing. Everyone was so warm and friendly. This is exactly what every American envisions a neighborhood Italian restaurant to be like. It IS the authentic experience you are looking for in Rome. But not intimidating. Please go. You will thank me!!

John G.

Yelp
Can you give 10 stars? There is NOTHING like this in America. This is simply amazing food. We had the carbonara and the alfredo. Both had guanciale in them, hence why we chose them. They will offer you an antipasto... be careful, its enough to feed 50 people. Wine, you better be ready of them to fill your glass more times than you can drink. We were simply treated like rock stars. They must of thought we were celebrities. And the finale (of course)... Tiramisu. Epic. The best. The only bad thing was now we can't eat italian food in america every again. Thanks for ruining eating in america!

Yelp
Recommended by the owner of our hotel we had dinner with my wife and we were amazed at the quality of the food. I had my life's best mozzarella and fettuccine. Highly recommend it. Read other reviews with high ratings. They are telling the truth.
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Full of locals hugging each other. Food was excellent. Portions in the primi were quite large, so bring an empty belly. Our waitress was adorable and helped me with my awful Italian pronunciation. As we stood to leave, the manager (owner?) called me his boy and gave my wife a purse full of oranges. What's not to like?

Jon F.

Yelp
The Best! I've been in Rome for 3 days and have had a number of decent, but eventually disappointing dining experiences. Tonight was my last night, so I looked on Yelp to find an amazing restaurant. I wanted to go out with a bang. I found Lagana and read the excellent reviews, paying attention to their high overall rating. I went in without knowing what to expect, but Lagana blew me away! First, I ordered the Buffalla mozzarella. They brought out bread with the appetizer, which was a nice touch. The mozzarella was great, of course, but the surprise all star was the Picadilly tomatoes that came with it. They were simply sliced in half, so I cut one in half again, cut off a piece of mozz, and put it on the bread. Heaven! The tomatoes were the best I've ever had. Every tomato before now doesn't compare. They were the perfect flavor, probably because the owner gets them fresh. He's big on fresh ingredients. Then, for my dinner, I got the porcini risotto. I love good risotto. The best I've had was in Florence, and I've been searching for a competitor ever since. I had a decent risotto yesterday, but it wasn't a contender. I'm proud to say that Lagana's risotto is truly amazing! I don't know if it's better than the one I found in Florence, but it's a close match. It's more like Ali-Foreman now instead of Ali-Frazier. Last, I had the tiramisu. I love good tiramisu. Again, the best I've had was in Florence at a place called Rivoire, but Lagana has very good tiramisu. The only problem with it is that I think they soak the ladyfingers too long. Other than that, it was great. The Prosecco I had was delicious, as was the bread. Also, the owner was truly wonderful. He checked on me a few times and was fun to talk to. He genuinely cares that his guests enjoy their meal. He is constantly rearranging tables and talking to the locals. I get the feeling that Lagana has some very loyal locals based on the friendly way that many of the patrons talked with the owner. It seems like that neighborhood hole-in-the-wall that all the locals love and don't broadcast it too much. Lagana was fantastic, and I highly recommend it. It is a bright spot for dining in the Eternal City.
google avatar

Pam L.

Yelp
What a find! My husband and I were delighted to stumble into this lovely little jewel of a restaurant. Superlative antipasto with each item served on a separate plate... Each perfectly dressed and presented. We weren't really planning on a full meal at lunchtime but couldn't resist the fresh pasta with white truffles sliced generously over the top table side. We are from San Francisco and do a lot of cooking and eating fine food, and will happily make a point of returning to Lagana!
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Will recommend to anyone that comes to visit Italy. Service was great and the food was to die for. Wish I would have stopped there from the first night cause of how good it is. Wife love it and the deserts were perfect.

Michelle O.

Yelp
BEST meal, service and authentic ambience. Absolutely best meal!!!!!! Can't wait to go back.

Rils K.

Yelp
This was our best meal, hands down. we got the roman app and everything was delicious. they divided pastas (amazing cacio e pepe) between the four of us so we got to try everything. fantastic service.

A G.

Yelp
Amazing food. All locals while we were there. Just do it! This place was bumping every night we walked by from 8:30 to midnight. And watch where you sit outside; cars come very close to the tables! Get the fettuccini Ragu and ask for Nico as your waiter!

John M.

Yelp
Charming restaurant. Probably the best mussels I've ever had in my life. We were very satisfied with the quality of the food and the service. A bit on the expensive side, but worth it.

Jennifer P.

Yelp
Magical. Warm. Welcoming. Delicious food, fantastic wine, and wonderful service. We had a terrible experience at a different restaurant when we first arrived in Rome and were treated as unwelcome tourists starting our trip off on a bad foot. However, this was not the case at Laganà. We dined at 9pm and realized that both tourists and local diners are treated the same, it was lovely to see. We absolutely fell in love with the kindness of the owners and their staff. We wanted to stay all night and try different foods! I had the mushroom risotto and my friend had a pasta with bacon and a simple light but amazing oil/grated cheese base. Finished dinner off with lemon sorbet and fresh berries. We will try to eat every remaining meal during our trip at this establishment, just lovely.
google avatar

J L.

Yelp
The restaurant is actually pretty nice, there is a very neighborhoodly feeling and the food is good. Their pastas are good, the veal chop was nice too, although the cut wasn't the best. My main issue concerns the 8 euros they charged me for the bread they brought in the beginning. Bread that one would normally expect free.

Tif Y.

Yelp
Great spot, good food, good service. I thought that both service and food here was better than some other places, and that it had a great ambience. Pretty busy so make reservations... and order the tiramisu!
google avatar

Bruce F.

Yelp
Wow, that was a lot of food! We sat outside for lunch at this great little side street location. We had five courses plus wine, a huge plate of bread and a potato frittata. The three breads were all of course very good. The complimentary frittata was also good. Our mixed vegetable starter was amazing, roasted to perfection. The pasta with artichoke and shrimp was my least favorite and the carbonara was my favorite. We also had roman chicken with roast peppers in a tomato sauce and bean soup with pasta. All this freshly made food for only €80. I'm happy and very stuffed.
google avatar

Mon A.

Yelp
We spent 2 weeks between Roma, Positano, and Firenze for our honeymoon and we had our worst meal here. We asked for a house white glass of wine each and they charged us for almost $40 dollars for a bottle. Our seafood risotto was mostly full of empty shell and our oxtail with potatoes was extremely disappointing. There is nothing romantic about this restaurant and service is no better. Our bill was $97 euros for the least filling and empty meal we have had.

Bob E.

Yelp
Let me begin by saying that the food was very good. Service was slow but the place was very crowed on a Friday night. Some of the wait staff was very friendly and se not so much. We had a big party. 9 people in total. They recommended a roman pasta sample for our dinner and we agreed. Both were very good. Here is the catch, when we sat, they asked if they could bring us some light apps, so we agreed. Light was slippery slope. They just kept coming. Plate after plate. The table was filled to capacity. In the end we spent more on the apps than the actual meal @ €15pp. Don't get me wrong they were awesome but that seemed a bit much.
google avatar

Luis C.

Yelp
Best restaurant in Rome for a quiet break from all the fuss. Quiet, very well located and amazing food.

Mark A.

Yelp
A great night. Sit outside if you can. The constant parade of walkers and occasional taxi (in a 15 foot wide street) is a lot of fun. Food worth more than you'll pay and welcoming service from real restaurant pros.

Neda A.

Yelp
Best service and best meal we had in Italy. They make you feel like you're part of their Italian family.

Janis L.

Yelp
Simply amazing! Best meal in Italy during 2 week trip. Neighborhood feel and unbelievable hospitality. Food, wine and ambience were Superb.

Roland C.

Yelp
outstanding. highly recommend the octopus, frutti Di mare (any one) the buffalo mozzarella with fresh tomatoes

Peter D.

Yelp
Only a few blocks from the tourist hordes of Plaza Navarro, a wonderful family run restaurant which serves locals and tourists alike. Nice interior but lots of outside seating on a small alley w occasional local traffic but mostly pedestrian. We were served complementary Proscecco when we sat down. They have a wide range of well prepared dishes from pastas to fresh grilled fish. Unlike the negative review below we were not charged 8 euros for bread. They are Calabrese and thus emphasize dishes of the south. I would highly recommend. The only negative was very overdone asparagus as a side. But the great service and other dishes more than made up for that
