We happened across this gem on vacation in the Michigan U.P. Buckwheat Zydeco was playing on the speaker by the door and we knew we had to try it out. When we got downstairs we were revisiting our vacation to New Orleans a couple years ago. The decor, music, & food was like we never left NOLA. The Seafood Risotto was creamy and you could taste the seafood, Red Beans & Rice with Sausage had great spices & flavors. The Beignets reminded me of our time at Cafe Du Monde in the French Quarter. We waited a short 30 minutes for a table, & our server was great. If you are looking for an authentic NOLA experience, but can’t get to New Orleans, Lagniappe Cajun Creole Eatery will not disappoint.

Google
Everything here was delicious. For appetizers we had fried green tomatoes, garlic grits and nachos. Grits and tomatoes were stand out amazing dishes! I got the chicken Orleans which was good! Everything was very flavorful and not too salty. I am a sauce guy and all of the sauces on the appetizers were delicious.

Google
Lagniappé. If you use Google maps it brings you to the Washington St entrance not Jackson Cut Alley address entrance (next block behind ). Single door with green canopy. Then downstairs. Dark wood. Was a bowling alley back in the day. Just dark, waitress provided a small lamp to read menu:) Awesome cajun atmosphere. Loved our waitress. I had catfish ponchartrain, hubby had cajun crawfish cavatappi pasta. Nose running spicy good. Finished with peaches&cream bread pudding w/ice cream.

Google
Neat place with authentic NOLA decor. Fried grit cakes were good for a starter. Seafood risotto also very good entree. Catfish ponchartrain was so-so as sauce was a bit salty. Service was very good and helpful. No draft beer, but a modest selection of bottled available.

Food was slightly above average and forgettable: seafood bisque could be thicker and flavorful, the wings were too sour (we ordered voodoo sauce). Atmosphere was okay, one bright point was our attentive and friendly server.

Google
My first trip to Marquette and was told to eat here. Food was awesome, our server was attentive and it had such a great family type feel. I was in a group of 6 and we tried each other’s dishes. Funny how each person said theirs was the best but I find other dishes for next time. CAUTION! Leave room for dessert. Again sampling each other’s orders. Not a bad one in the group but left way too full.

We decided to try the Lagniappe restaurant after hearing many good things about it. We tried it on the weekend so parking was free, and it was a short walk to the restaurant. The entrance we came in was on Washington and we walked down the stairs to the basement of the building, which is where Lagniappe is located. The atmosphere was amazing, with brick and wood walls creating a beautiful atmosphere. We were seated promptly since we came before the rush, and our server was very attentive and helpful. We had the mussels for an appetizer and two of us were smitten with it. The others liked the taste but weren't keen on the texture of the mussels (nothing with the food, just not a texture that was for them.) For entrees we tried the Shrimp Po Boy, the Jambalaya, the shrimp boil, and the Gumbo Ya Ya. All of this was superb! The portions on the Po Boy and the shrimp boil were perfect (we chose the one pound option.) The Gumbo Ya Ya felt a bit light; would probably not order this as a standalone meal in the future. The Jambalaya was a massive amount of food! All of us tried it, one of our members had it in addition to his gumbo, and there were still leftovers for a full meal the next day. At the end of the meal each person declared this their new favorite restaurant in Marquette. Looking forward to visiting again!

Google
I love this place and if I'm in Marquette, it's a must visit every trip. Can pick your heat level 1-5 for dishes. I ordered the shrimp and tasso bowtie, however, changed it to alfredo sauce and went with blackened chicken instead of shrimp and level 2 heat. Oh man, it was absolutely perfect! Amazing flavor, and each bite with an artichoke heart in it were like the cherries on top. Yum! Highly recommend! 👌 New Orleans vibes.

Yelp
How delicious!! I tried several of the dishes. I wish I could remember what we all had. The waitress was new, and was helpful for the dishes she's tried. We had a person in our group help us with decisions of what to order. You really can't go wrong. It was excellent. We went after a home football game, the place wasn't crowded yet, but by the time we left there were several waiting for us to get in. It was a fun atmosphere and would definitely return. Comments about peppery spices you may read seem unfounded. Not one item anyone ordered was peppery. In fact the spice was delicious when it was present. Enjoy and definitely visit.

Yelp
This restaurant was recommended to us by a local. We enjoyed the atmosphere and environment! Very cozy! We ordered the creole penne pasta and the vegetarian ratatouille! We thought our orders were fine, a little mid. There were plenty options for individuals who are vegetarian! Service was great as well!

Tiffany Z.

Yelp
Heck yes we recommend! I've been following them on IG so I was so happy to finally make it up to Marquette and try them out. Boy do they deliver on flavor, service, portions and decorations! We had a tri of apps and each a main dish. Between 3 people it was a lot of food and good leftovers for lunch the next day. Owners travel to NOLA every year to make sure to bring back authentic meals and flavors. Everything was so delicious that I'm back on their website looking at the menu deciding what I want for next time. Run, don't walk (although it's right in town so it's walking distance to so many hotels and AirBnb's) to this restaurant!

Marie B.

Yelp
Whenever we come to Marquette we try to get to this restaurant. They have amazing food that is not common in restaurants. The seafood risotto is my favorite. The service is always good and the place is clean. We will be back

Alyssa R.

Yelp
We were seated right away and the host was friendly. Our server was very knowledgeable with the menu, helped us pick what to order because the menu is large, but most importantly he was patient with our group of 5 with only 1 that dined there in the past. It was a cozy restaurant with comfortable seating. Every dish was large portions, and we all got a dish and shared. I was amazed at how generous the seafood portions were in each dish, there was seafood in almost every bite. Every dish had bold flavors, and was cooked to perfection. It never happens when you have a party of 5 order several items and we all agreed that each dish was excellent. I'll be back and I'm bringing my team to enjoy the best food I've had in Marquette.

Jasna R.

Yelp
I came for early lunch on a Thursday and was immediately seated. Service: 5/5. Thank you! Tap water: 2/5, surprising given all the other tap water in Marquette I've had was delicious, including next door at Donckers and Trenary Toast. Cajun ratatouille pasta: 3.5/5. Tasty and probably one of the lighter, healthier options on the menu. Had a nice kick but didn't wow me. Beignets: 3/5. Huge though airy. Of course I love the beignets in Nola more, but these were solid. I saved some to eat with coffee later in the day. May come back another day for some of the heavier, probably more popular dishes.

Melissa E.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible meal! The appetizers were perfectly cooked/seasoned, our entrees were delicious and the perfect mix of spice, the drinks were authentic, and the dessert was the best part. Highly recommend this restaurant. It's the best. Definitely get the Mississippi Mud Pie.

Paula C.

Yelp
The food was delicious! We started with the fried green tomatoes. We shared the hush puppies and they were amazing. My husband had the mulafa sandwich and said it was good as the one he had at Mena's place in New Orleans. I was craving a wedge salad and it didn't disappoint! The service was great! Food came out fast and hot!

Raksha R.

Yelp
Had a dinner at this place and totally loved it! The ambiance is cool and I must say they take their food seriously. We ordered shrimps and grits AMAAAAZING and the famous risotto. I am not a risotto person but Is till loved it. Our server Tellena was very helpful definitely coming back for more!

Yuko F.

Yelp
Very good price. All delicious. Plenty of food. We could not eat all. So we took it home. We had the best meal next day.

Deborah C.

Yelp
This is as close as I will probably get to New Orleans, but because of Lagniappe, I feel like I've at least experienced a little of the ambience and a LOT of the food scene. Fabulous Creole eatery in Marquette, Michigan. No more Blackened Gator, unfortunately, but the Catfish Chips (lightly breaded and fried with a sauce with a kick), Fried Green Tomatoes (just the right thickness of a solid green tomato and a not-too-spicy dipping sauce) and Seafood Risotto. This is the only place I've eaten where the risotto is always perfectly cooked, with the rice just a bit toothsome and lightly saucy. The shrimp and crawfish are perfectly cooked and there's a nice spice that isn't overbearing, but wakes up the tastebuds. You can also get an Absinthe Drip, which is fun and a treat for Dutch women that like the flavor of black licorice. This place is always our go-to in Marquette.

Theresa M.

Yelp
Delicious food! Both my husband and I thought the food was great. We definitely recommend this restaurant. And try the Ore Dock beers ... also very good!

Peter A.

Yelp
Came of Isle Royale and was headed back to the Lower Peninsula. I wanted something different and found Lagniappe. Came in and my friend and I ordered 3 appetizers (hush puppies, weekly plate of gnocchi, and the fondeaux). Main meal was fried green tomato BLT. Man, I don't know if it was the fact that it was my first meal off the island or the food was that good but 5/5 all day! Waitress was attentive and my ice tea was never empty for long. I will have to try and make it back to see if it lives up to how I remember it was.

Krista G.

Yelp
We were up north in Marquette for work and wanted to go out for dinner as a group. First, they do not accept reservations, so we had to put our name on the waiting list. We had a group of 14 and after 30-35 minute wait, we had to sit at two different tables. No problem, understood as it was really busy for a Tuesday evening. The waitstaff was prompt with taking our food and drink orders. I enjoyed the crawfish pasta I ordered but some who ordered the grits commented they were really salty that night. Apparently they had come here before and that was not the case. Overall, we had a good experience and I would definitely give it another try when up north!

Yelp
When the Smokin'Hubster learned that our new area had a Cajun-Creole restaurant, I practically had to tie him down. He was so enthusiastic to try Lagniappe that he didn't even wait for me! The days following the Big Truck Move were fun, especially since our super-duper helpful besties stayed in town for a few extra days. We made our way into Marquette and found ourselves here for some awesome lunch. Sydnie took great care of us and quickly set us up with beverages: 2-Blackrocks 51K (a new favorite for me!), an Abita Amber (NOLA Brew!) and a Court Jester. And then she told us about a special menu... Our friend with the gluten-allergy was THRILLED that there was an entire menu just for folks with similar restrictions. That made all the difference for each of us, knowing that we'd all find something to enjoy together. Two of us had the Red Beans and Sausage, which were so generously sized that we enjoyed it again for lunch another day. The table shared collard greens, which I could only hope to replicate some day! Two of us had ginormous po'boys, with pulled pork (mine!) and roast beef debris. We struggled to finish the sandwiches, sacrificing the bread ends to keep working on the meat. We left rather fat and happy after that lunch!

Pat H.

Yelp
Service was great food wasn't what I like but I had a sandwich which was very good. It's been a long time since I was there.

Megan S.

Yelp
Busy busy busy in the summer time. Had to go to another bar and come back while we waited. Food pretty good - had alligator and red beans. Huge menu to chose from. Ambiance is Mardi gras party themed.

Hannah D.

Yelp
Had a takeout order of the wings, Caesar salad and shrimp and grits. All were great. Excellent portions and hot and fresh at pickup. Shrimp And grits were absolutely delicious and just like if we were in LA.

Alyson B.

Yelp
As a native New Orleanian this place serves faux Cajun / New Orleans food. Not authentic. Evidently they think pepper is synonymous with New Orleans. It is not. Flavor = New Orleans. 1. Tenderloin with shrimp and hollandaise. The butter was not frothed properly and the sauce was broken. It was not a proper hollandaise. And not good to the taste. The shrimp was covered in pepper. Absolutely covered. Difficult to taste the food if it is negated by the taste of heavy pepper. Tenderloin was served rare - not medium rare as requested. Gristle at the base of the steak. 2. Red beans and rice. A staple in our weekly menu. The beans were so thick it was like paste. And heavily - HEAVILY seasoned with pepper and thyme. Just no. 3. Beignets. These are NOT beignets. These are donuts shaped like beignets and seasoned with heavy cinnamon and nutmeg. Beignets are fried in cotton seed oil. The waiter was confused when I mentioned that because they don't use cotton seed oil. NOT traditional beignets. This place fools people who don't know any better. And they charge a fortune. But definitely not traditional (or any other) type of New Orleans / Cajun food. It's an insult to authentic New Orleans food and flavors.

Briz L.

Yelp
Great food and excellent service! Crawfish nachos are amazing and the Low country shrimp and grits were superb!

Paul T.

Yelp
Full disclosure here, I'm not a Cajun cuisine connoisseur but Lagniappe certainly checked a lot of boxes. Had a Muffaletta, my wife had fried green tomatoes, one of our kids had Jambalaya, the other had a burger. Everything was amazing. Wait staff was very patient, knowledgeable and very friendly. Dinning room was cool narrow, and filled with Nawlins motif.

Barbara W.

Yelp
Very good drinks at good prices. Food was excellent and large portions. Server was friendly, attentive and when I asked what he recommended he suggested what I had already planned to order. Cajun Crawfish Cavatappi, so good!

Mya A.

Yelp
Baked Seafood Fondeaux before and after photos^^^. This shit was so hot and fresh with big bits of seafood you could split and share. Generous with the seafood in the dishes. BOMB I WOULD ORDER 5 AND THIS ALONE. ambience was shnoice besides feeling like an outsider and being stared at lol

Char W.

Yelp
The food was exceptional. Everyone in my party loved the dishes they had. I wish we lived closer. I would frequent that restaurant often. No wonder we had to wait for a table. The place was crowded. The waiter was very friendly and took care of us.

Fred Z.

Yelp
Very tasty jumbalaya (huge portion) and soup was 5-star- comfortable atmosphere but prices a little higher than expected. Excellent service and wait staff Definitely worth going & enjoying a very good meal

Lauren H.

Yelp
I love this place so much. They have the best cosmopolti in town, service is always thorough and immaculate, the portions are huge, and the flavors are always top notch. My favorite thing on the menu is the crawfish cavatappi and the shrimp and Tasso bow tie pasta. I always add shrimp to the cavatappi dish. You can spice up your dish to whatever level you prefer. The crawfish pasta dish already comes with a nice kick though, fair warning! I love the alligator bites with the hollandaise sauce, their blackening seasoning is delicious. The dressings for salads are great and my husband is obsessed with their trio dish where you get fried chicken, fried catfish, and one other thing fried that I can't remember haha. They also have the best brunch in town, a Bloody Mary from them is a must. My favorites items from brunch are the Ya Ka Mein ramen which has collard greens and perfectly shredded beef in it with a soft egg to mix in. Then second favorite is the breakfast burrito that I get it smothered in etoufee sauce. I also always get a side of the cheesy garlic grits, you won't regret it! I could go on for days but this place is a must try.

Sarah F.

Yelp
This restaurant definitely lives up to the name Lagniappe ("a little extra"). The portions are LARGE and the drinks are strong! It all tasted great and we had such a good time. The service was fairly quick. We put our name in the waitlist when the predicted wait was around an hour and we got in about 40 minutes later. It has an older, authentic feel as well.

Amy D.

Yelp
Amazing food and service! We were traveling through and stopped in to see the city. I love a good Cajun place. I stopped in with my kids and everyone was happy with what they ordered, even my 14 daughter who can be very picky. We ordered crawfish etouffee, seafood risotto, and kids chicken Alfredo - so good. We also had Beignets, but those fell a little short on taste. Hard to live up to our favorite from Cafe Du Monde. Regardless, this one is on the list to visit again when ever we come back!

Emily S.

Yelp
I've been here twice, and I have been pleased both times. The food is always fresh and hot. The servers are quick to take your order. The seafood soup was very good. The crawdad pasta uses that soup as a base and it is also very good. This place can get pretty busy, so come for an early dinner or late lunch.

John B.

Yelp
Our trip to the UP is only complete with a stop at Lagniappe. My favorite dish is the seafood risotto which was my choice. Sally ordered the NOLA shrimp, and we decided to share plates. Everything was wonderful, and the risotto was as good as I remembered. The shrimp were large; however, she was having some trouble peeling hers. We topped off a great dinner by sharing a mud pie which we enjoyed thoroughly. Our server Sam was great, and she took good care of us. I'm already looking forward to our next trip up.

Larry S.

Yelp
Waiter (Noah) is charming. Hostess was cold and unfriendly, preventing five star review. Food continues to be delicious as always. I recommend this place for NOLA in Da Yoop.

J S.

Yelp
We spent a late afternoon walking around Marquette area and decided t try the Creole place on a Thursday evening based on ratings, and we were glad we did. It was certainly bustling with business, but could have been attributed to the fact that NMU was starting classes on Monday. The bartender made great drinks and we did not have to wait as long as anticipated. The food was spectacular. We typically share an entree but we had to try two that evening and we were glad we did. Food was spectacular with just the perfect amount of spice in our opinion. Extremely flavorful and plenty to eat. The vibe was also good as was the service. We highly recommend this spot that you enter from the alley way. You will not be disappointed. Cheers And Marquette is a very cool city on the peninsula!

Karen K.

Yelp
Our table of five enjoyed dinner dog sled night. I enjoyed red beans and rice. We enjoyed Cajun French fries before dinner. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Our waiter was excellent and it has an authentic New Orleans vibe. I previously lived in New Orleans for five years and we all enjoyed our experience. There is a full bar if that is your thing.

Judy R.

Yelp
Our last night in Ishpeming and it was a day of RV problems. So we decided to take a ride to beautiful Marquette on Lake Superior. The restaurant was located in an alley called Jackson Cut.and reminded me of New Orleans. The place was bustling and we were told that there was a 30 minute wait, so we opted to sit at the bar. Justin, bartender and server extraordinaire brought us menus, made me fresh black coffee and got David his IPA, a Yooper Ale. We decided on the Gumbo Yaya and the Seafood Bisque for starters. Then David ordered the Jambalaya and I had the Bouillabaisse. Both were loaded with great ingredients like catfish, shrimp, chicken, andouille sausage and crawfish. The dishes were superb and the service impeccable. I even treated David to a shirt! Lovely ending to a four day stay in the UP!

Heather L.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place. I went to HS in southeast Texas. I know Cajun food. The reviews looked good. We were there for a late lunch and there were maybe 20 people there. Hush puppy app took 16+ minutes to arrive. No butter. Just remoulade and cocktail sauce. Fine. Entrees took another 20+ minutes to arrive. Shrimp on my po boy was barely cooked. Should be crispy as hell. Etoufee (I know I'm not spelling it right) had very little flavor. Underwhelmed. Service mediocre.

Power Y.

Yelp
I like me some good Cajun but I felt this place didn't quite notch all 5 stars for me. However the place is really nice and feels like Lousiana to me. Just felt like the jambalaya had a bit too much of the tang from the hot sauce. All I could taste was that. The spice was definitely a plus. Love the spice notes perfect at 2 level. Food also tasted like it was cooked fresh to order. All I can say is it needs to find a balance so that the food can be just right in btwn. Heavy and light. Would have loved to dive in and kept going. Anyways the hot beignets were definitely worth it.

Bruce D.

Yelp
Best food we've had in the UP. It's a hidden gem that served excellent Cajun cuisine. Service was great, ambience out the wazoo, and a very good menu to choose from. Don't miss it if you're in Marquette

Susi P.

Yelp
Our go to restaurant in Marquette. Always fun to try something new and they always have plenty of new recipes. The atmosphere is so unique with a hidden underground feeling. The staff is friendly and so are the people who frequent this fun restaurant.

James B.

Yelp
Food is good. Beware rude waiters and managers and service charge that is deliberately presented as a discount for cash payment and not included in the initial bill, then tacked on at the end. Staff and manager were defensive and stubborn and told me they were fine if I do not return to eat here. Beware. There are many other great restaurants in Marquette who will happily and politely take your business.

Craig C.

Yelp
Very impressed. It's always a good sign to see a restaurant near capacity during the slow season on a Tuesday night. The aromas of the food fill the air. Service was great, lots of menu options for food and drink. Portions are large and the food itself met my high expectations. Definitely a place I'll keep returning to.

Sarah R.

Yelp
The best food we had in all of Michigan. The crab dip appetizer would have me drive the 20 hours from my house.

Jennifer Z.

Yelp
Soft shell crab special was fantastic. The service at the bar was great. The vibe is always fun and vintage.

Floyd T.

Yelp
This place is one of the gems of Marquette, it's the closet to southern comfort as it gets for MQT. The flavors in the food does have an authentic New Orleans flavor. The drinks seem amazing I can say cause I haven't had one yet, I was pretty slapped from Remeis around the corner before arriving. If you are looking for good food you found it here...10 out of 10

Lynda T.

Yelp
Great menu! Huge portions. Eclectic setting. Attentive servers. Craft cocktail bar! If you like Cajun food this is your place!

Barbara C. V.

Yelp
Friendly service. Helpful in offering insights on the menu. Options looked authentic to New Orleans food choices. Had a muffelata. I've had one in New Orleans and this one was just as good.

Lynda T.

Yelp
I was shocked and disappointed that my blackened catfish arrived with one small filet! $22!! Everything else myself or friends have ordered required taking some home. Also the dirty rice did not have ground beef. I love blackened catfish but will remember that it was served like it is an expensive fish. Heck you even get more whitefish for less than $22 at various places.

Michael S.

Yelp
This is an amazing place to eat. The food is insanely good. The portions are big so look out. They have an appetizer that is cheddar cheese, garlic and grits, we got them as fried cakes, out of this world good!! You have to eat here if you come to Marquette. The dessert menu is also awesome and they had a great looking drink menu but we didn't get stuck into any drinks this time. It is a dark cozy interior which I imagine is welcome in winter. But it is all about the food which is so good. Did I mention the food..........wow.

Donna A.

Yelp
A change of pace from the usual ethnic restaurants. Cajun! My shrimp and grits was delicious and I brought half of it home. My husband did the same with his seafood risotto. We also tried the Boudin Balls as an appetizer. It was a great choice. David, our server, was very helpful and the service was prompt. Give this place a try and try out the different hot sauces that are available.

Debbie P.

Yelp
Service was very nice! Keep in mind (as shown in the photos), the servings are absolutely enormous and two (maybe even three) people can most definitely share a plate. The ambiance is quite cozy and laid back, would definitely return!
