The Best Year-Round Patios in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"This newer Lago Tacos location offers an outdoor dining option in Louis Park. Its cold-weather patio has standing heaters, fire pits, and strings of globe lights, which add to the warm and cozy effect. Start with the fried avocado tacos and then hit the rest of the taco menu, which spans from barbacoa and al pastor to vegan chorizo and ahi tuna. Online ordering is available. Lago has three locations, with a fourth coming to Eagan." - Justine Jones

Google
It was such a beautiful day in St. Louis Park, and Taco Lagos was the perfect spot to soak it in. I had an amazing time enjoying their flavorful empanadas, delicious street tacos, and refreshing margaritas—everything was super tasty and satisfying. Huge shoutout to Bella, our server, who was not only incredibly nice but truly stellar. She made the whole experience even better with her friendly and attentive service. If you're looking for a great vibe, excellent food, and top-notch service, Taco Lagos is definitely worth a visit!

Google
Visited the St Louis Park location, having been a fan of the original Excelsior location. Had the happy hour Margarita’s, Tacos (carnitas, steak & potato), and a spicy chicken salad. All were good, along with chips & queso. A good addition to that area.

Google
Clean restaurant, quick and friendly service, and delicious food and drinks. The portions are great for the price! The salsa and guac were very fresh as well, definitely recommend!

Google
The only complaint I have is they never come and refill our drinks, even when it's not busy. That's frustrating. Other than that, the food is amazing. It's a fun little spot with an awesome patio. Definitely recommended!

Google
Cute place, ample bar space, booths, shady patio, I got a veggie burrito & it was huge💛 super mild flavor but the red hot sauce was GOOD! I was happy. The service was actually kind of abysmal. The host barely said a word, Stared at me blankly when I said thank you & bye. That was weird. I didn't feel cared about at all. I could add more details but I'm not here to complain! Just share info. I did still have a nice time.

Google
Went to celebrate my new workplace move with my sister and another coworker. The staff was awesome, helpful, and catering. The food was even better, but the cherry on top was the drinks. Their margaritas were top-notch.

Google
This place is so cute, and the menu has so many fun options for tacos! I love the variety, and the atmosphere is comfortable for a date night or drinks with friends. The service was quick, but the location is small, so you might be waiting if you come at peak meal times.

Yelp
Good service and also very kind owner giving free taco for the tiktoker men that wants to buy some taco for homeless

Zion ..

Yelp
their empanadas and quesadillas are to die for!!! The service there is perfect not a long wait time either! the atmosphere is very safe and calm

Yelp
this place was visited by my buddy JOSH and somehow we got introduced to TOM the owner and he gifted us 40 tacos for the homeless... will he do it every time, dont know... but this place needs another 10 years on their location lease. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/i7i2MCA8uq0

Yelp
I found this establishment just perfect this early evening before catching a show at the Children's Theatre Company with my husband. We parked in their back lot for free. We asked if we could sit at the outdoor patio and the hostess said "Yes" so we sat at the bar and received very nice service from PM Bartender P and the rest of the staff who really worked well together to serve beverages and food efficiently. The happy hour Mini Margs for $5 are nummy. 5 stars for the Thai Peanut Chicken Bowl special-not something I would ordinarily pick but it had such a great fresh flavor that I really enjoyed it. This item is very rich so I would share it or take it home for leftovers.

Yelp
Stopped in during happy hour with a friend. Pre-pandemic we would eat here often & have always loved it. The staff are always nice & attentive. I ordered the chicken tinga tacos with rice & chipotle mayo & she got the tuna tacos with rice & sweet corn cake. The tacos were good as always. The sides were a bit off like they were premade & sitting all day. After we ate we decided to order Washington Apple shots which were big shots & good. Surprised at how slow a lot of the businesses were at happy hour but it was a Monday but happy we were able to get parking in the lot (smaller lot behind the restaurant) & a table right away. Overall we love Lagos & will hopefully get the chance to go again.

Yelp
I went here with some friends for a late lunch. The patio seating was really nice with the spring weather! Our server was attentive to our table and helpful when making selections. I ordered the chicken tinga tacos. They were delicious! As a table we also ordered the chips and dips. Loved that there were 4 dips: guac, salsa, queso, and refried beans. It was very tasty and a great appetizer to enjoy while waiting for our food. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
The food and the vibes are great here. They have a wonderful patio which is dog friendly. I love getting their bowl and margaritas!

Yelp
Lago Tacos is my go to delivery spot! The patio is also amazing in the summer with an outdoor bar that adds a fun atmosphere! My favorite item on the menu is chips and queso! It has house made chips and pico de gallo and green onions on top. While this is a mildly spicy queso it is delicious. Another go to that is ordered almost everything is the barbacoa bowl. The meat is tender and flavorful and I have to say this is the best meat option on the menu! It comes with a jalapeño and avocado salsa that pairs perfectly with the meat. Definitely recommend getting an extra side of it! The steak is an okay option but does not compare to the barbacoa. For a unique option the southern fried chicken bowl has a mix of unique flavors including apples, boerbon cherries, jalapeño ranch, and blue cheese crumbles! Definitely does not fit in the modern Mexican options but was good! Also recommend the sweet corn cakes, they are drool worthy! The nachos are good but I wish they offered the barbacoa! I always go with chicken and enjoy them. The fried avocado and stuffed jalapeños are things items on the menu that I would skip! Tres Leches wasn't my favorite but others that I have eaten there with have really enjoyed it!

Yelp
Lago is the place to go! No one in the area compares to Lago's food and bar options! Especially the prices!!! Wait staff are fun and happy! Vegan chorizo and veggie options available

Yelp
Tuna tacos are the bomb! So flavorful and yummy. Idk what they marinade the tuna in but it's amazing. My fave tacos. I will always come back for these. I also love the corn cakes but was disappointed that it was cold and dry today. The rice also didn't taste fresh, but when they are done fresh they are also good. Service was great per usual. Quick time to get the food out, although I would have waited a bit longer for fresh sides. Also got a $5 water moccasin shot, which was very strong. Good value overall here at lago tacos.

Yelp
Lago Taco has certain great food options and a cheerful atmosphere and nice patio. Food: while I've been told their tacos are a little pricier than they are good, I've always gotten their steak salad which is my favorite. They truly made a good salad. Roasted tomato, well sized cuts of steak, onions, and a great dressing. I truly recommend this salad. On my restaurant salad scale this is a solid 8.5/9 which is quite high. Their margaritas are good, but pricey for their size. Atmosphere: fun and light! Good place for dinner with friends! Service: a little spotty but they're always very courteous. Parking: I live in uptown so I walk here but there are places to street park within a couple blocks for sure. Overall, I recommend going here but get their salads!

Yelp
Been to this taco place many times and it's always great. It's located near one of the last remaining cool areas of Uptown - Lyn-Lake. Consistently great food, service and decent prices. They have an open air bar / patio (enclosed in the winter and open for warm sunny breezes in the summer). I've never been able to finish the half-order of nachos they are so generously portioned. Tacos a the bomb here and will surely satisfy your taco tastes. Homemade hot sauces of varying flavors and spice levels. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Marla K.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots in Lyn-Lake! The service here is always fast and friendly, no matter how busy they are. There is a decent amount of seating, and their outdoor patio is beautiful in the spring/summer. The food is excellent, and offer a variety of tacos at a very reasonable price. I highly recommend trying their avocado taco when you go here (it's my favorite :)).

Yelp
I read on Yelp that lago tacos was only a 3.5 but decided to give it a chance anyway. Wow am I glad that we did. Menu is excellent, service is great, free parking in a busy neighborhood, I don't have a single thing to mark them down on at all! We had an (ENORMOUS) order of chicken nachos (1/2 of the XL order!), a veggie burrito (also at least two servings), and a corn cake on the side, along with a mango marg and an ultimate marg. Just blown away!! Service was EXCELLENT, I really don't know what previous reviewers were talking about. We will DEFINITELY be back for more until we get this closer to a 5!!!!!!

Yelp
My daughter and I love this place and come here regularly. The staff greet everyone warmly, and they have three seating options: a bar section, a pub-style table section, and an outdoor patio. There are tvs showing games in the table section, but volume is down so this doesn't interfere with eating. The food is worth the visit every time. They have quality meat and vegan options - in vegan and my daughter is not, so we usually get a mix of different tacos and are never disappointed. Friendly staff, quality food, and a great ambiance with different options for your experience. Highly recommended!

Yelp
This was a random pick after searching for a long time. I felt this could be a good place and it was. The ambiance and place was well decorated. It has a nice patio which is well decorated with tables and nice wall paints. Food: coming to the food they do have nice options. The appetizers list was huge and loved them. 5/5 - Empanadas were a delicious and portion is good 5/5- Fire cracker chicken lettuce wrap was a bomb. We totally loved this dish and enjoyed it. 2/5- I tried there vegan chorizo as I usually love meat chorizo and I was disappointed. I wish they have the real chorizo on the menu. 4/5- tacos were really delicious 4/5 - Tres leches cake was delicious but I do have a thick layer of cream on top and that spoiled the taste a bit for me. Drinks- I took a Lago margarita and wasn't impressed. But my wife had a mocktail and she loved it. Service- service was fast and quick. We dint have to wait a long time for food or service. She was quick and professional. Suggestions- They can upgrade there patio furniture and some tables looked old and were not comfortable to sit at. Also since it's an open patio may be they need to keep the floors clean a bit.

Yelp
Tom the owner and the wait staff are truly amazing! We came in last minute to order 30 orders of tacos for the homeless and they were gracious enough to donate them to the homeless shelter. They got the tacos out quickly, worked together as a team and everyone at the homeless shelter loved them!

Jim R.

Yelp
Stopped here on the way back of a road trip from the west coast. Man I'm so glad I stopped here. Some of the best food I ever had. The staff is so nice and friendly. Great employees with a very generous owner.

Chad H.

Yelp
Tom, the owner, covered the cost of 40 taco meals that a TikTok creator ordered for the homeless shelter. You guys rock!!!

Kathryn R.

Yelp
Fast service and very friendly. Great food and can't wait to visit again. The waiter was patient and very knowledgeable.

Yelp
Having just moved here from Texas last year, we hoped we'd find at least a couple of decent Mexican places up here. This is now a go-to for us. There isn't a huge menu (like no enchiladas) but what they do have is delicious. I'm big on dips and salsas and I was very impressed with their salsa, bean dip, queso, and guacamole. I also like the fact that there are plenty of TVs for when sports are on.

Yelp
Lago Tacos is a casual bar-taco shop that's open late. They have one labeled vegan taco and a couple others that can be modified to be vegan. I started with the chips and guacamole ($11), which tasted fine, but not amazing. For the price, it felt expensive, but maybe that's the reality we live in now. The vegan chorizo taco ($5) is perfectly fine. I liked the flavor of the seasoning, though it's oily, and the texture of the meat TVP-esque (which, for me, is a good thing). I also got a portobello mushroom taco ($4.75) and a fried avocado taco ($5) where I omitted the cheese and other non-vegan ingredients. Our server indicated that they're both vegan, but who knows with the batter. Anyway, these tacos were fine, but not worth all the effort of the modifications. I guess if I were in a bind and needed a late-night meal, or happened to be with a group of people wanting tacos, I might return to Lago Tacos, but it's not a must-try by any means. For better vegan tacos, go to Hamburguesas El Gordo, Salsa a la Salsa, El Taquito Taco Shop (St. Paul) or Rincon Mexicano (Inver Grove Heights).

Yelp
Nice outdoor environment. Great service, good focused menu. Food was quick and at a good price.
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
Drinks were a little sweet, but the XXL nachos made up for it. We had the chicken tinga and the other toppings (corn, beans, etc) were layered well throughout the MASSIVE serving. The queso and salsa came on the side and our server offered to bring extra hot sauce (I think it was the tinga sauce). I'd definitely go back for happy hour.
google avatar

Brad V.

Yelp
Outstanding taco selection, neighborhood bar feel. They take tacos and margaritas seriously. The tacos are anything but small - two is enough for a big eater. Really good salsa. Loved the "classic" margarita - tequila, agave, and fresh-squeezed lemon. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
Somewhere between a bar and a restaurant, this place manages to kill it with both. I ordered the walleye bowl and was absolutely blown away. Since moving to Minnesota, walleye has become a main staple in my diet and this place does it better than any other place I've been to so far. The beer batter is delectable and perfectly compliments the tender walleye. The crema was a perfect pairing and the rice and avocado ensured I was full. As for drinks, I cannot recall the name, but it was listed as the official drink of the Twins. It essentially tasted like an improved vodka + juice. I will definitely be going back and I most likely will be unable to resist the walleye again.

Yelp
Great food, service, and patio! Went on a bike ride and stopped here halfway. Awesome happy hour items to choose from AND fill you up. Street parking is the only option and is hard to find.
google avatar

Hannah A.

Yelp
Lago Tacos is a great happy hour spot and they have delicious tacos! Great food and great atmosphere!
google avatar

Rob B.

Yelp
Love coming here. There patio is amazing. Also, the Bennie here with the corn cake is the bomb! Now for the negative. GET RID OF THE PLASTIC STRAWS! It's 2022. Come on guys.

Marilyn O.

Yelp
To American. A lot of food not spicy at . Salsa was bland. They have three servers I think not sure One is running around crazy and the other two are just like WHAT EVER. looks like the owner likes to sit around and EAT....LOL THEIR MARGARITAS ARE THE SMALLEST GLASS I EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE. SO ALL IN ALL WILL NOT BE BACK. JUST SAYING

Kayla M.

Yelp
Awesome food and patio area. Different taco choices like buttermilk chicken with apple, which was delicious, everything we ordered was great. Would definitely come back.

Yelp
Picked up some Tacos from one of my favorite spots in Uptown @lagotacos ! They have a delicious variety of Taco options to choose from. Stop by one of their Twin Cities locations! * Walleye Taco- Beer-battered walleye, chipolte mayo, cabbage blend, pico de gallo, and queso fresco. * Southern Fried Chicken Taco- Buttermilk-fried chicken, sliced gala apples, bourbon cherries, blue cheese crumbles, lettuce, jalapeno ranch, and colby jack cheese. * Beef and Potato Taco- spicy ground beef and potato, colby jack cheese, lettuce, pico de gallo, sour cream, rojo sauce, and queso fresco.

Steven T.

Yelp
The menu isn't your mama's tacos, but so much more. I ordered the ahi tuna burrito bowl, with a very spicy salsa. Thankfully our waiter suggested to put that on the side vs. smothering, as it was quite spicy, but quite good. My only complaint, the dish came out not as hot as I would have liked. There were 4 different entrees at our table and they all came out within 45 seconds of each other. Our entire group was pleased with not only their food, but the service. I would go back a second time, given the option.

Yelp
My favorite place to eat in Minneapolis! Walleye tacos are to die for!
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
I am obsessed! I'm not kidding. We ate at the Excelsior store on Sunday, and it was SO good that we ordered takeout from the Minneapolis store on Wednesday! Lago Tacos is just plain fun. There's a great mix of authentic fillings and slightly wacky fusion combinations. I appreciate how creative they are with the sauces and toppings -- like someone clearly put some thought into this menu. I think our favorite taco was the ahi tuna taco. The tuna was very fresh, and dressed with chipotle mayo and avocado and a bunch of stuff that complemented the tuna without overwhelming it. We also got the fried avocado tacos and mushroom tacos. The avocado and mushrooms were very crisply fried and SO good. And the firecracker shrimp was fresh and crunchy and spicy too. Oh, and the corn cakes that come on the side are just plain cool. So much more fun than rice and beans At the Excelsior store, we had the yummy guava BBQ pork tacos, which came with mammoth piles of onion strings on top. And we also had the coconut shrimp tacos, which I don't think they have at Uptown, but they really should. I liked these almost as much as the ahi tuna tacos. They know how to cook fish! I did notice that the Uptown store has way more vegetarian options -- different audience, I guess. I can't wait to try more menu items. Southern fried chicken tacos with bourbon cherries? Yes please! The creative cocktails look fun too.

Yelp
Food is amazing, service is great, atmosphere is very enjoyable, all around I like it. This is my new go to location for food, dates, service not to look bad and very cool chill atmosphere in the uptown area. I'm definitely having my spring and summer dates here low key

Caiden S.

Yelp
I am here every Friday for happy hour. It is a great atmosphere and the staff is always super nice. If you are looking for some solid margs my group of friends would always recommend this place. As for the food I do see that the tacos are a bit more on the expensive side individually but get a few you like and you will not be disappointed! Overall my recommendation: - chips and dips(bottomless chips) - Baja shrimp tacos
google avatar

Yuri R.

Yelp
One of my favorite spot for tacos and quesadilla! I like how each taco has different toppings and they are very filling. The quesadilla is nice, crispy, and flavorful. The salsas that Lago has are good. The service is good as well.
google avatar

Kyle T.

Yelp
This place rocks, even during the shut-down! I have been here several times, watching football on a Sunday, lunch with my daughter and just a lunch while biking through the city one day. Great flavors, great service, great locations and a few must try options. The one that really floats my boat is the fried avocado, an absolute lovely dish. Soft and tasty with just the right amount of breading. These don't come across as greasy in any way, just so delicious, a must try. Can't wait to come back, sit down, watch some football, get drunk and order the .....you guessed it! KT
google avatar

Gordon V.

Yelp
Went here for a quick appetizer with a friend after seeing his niece perform at the VFW across the street, would definitely like to come back and try dinner. Only ordered margaritas, chips and salsa off the Happy Hour menu. The chips weren't the best, doable, but the salsa was amazing. The drinks were delicious, and from what I could see from what other folks were ordering, may have to come back and try the empanadas and other options. Since not being inside this location since it was Vera's Cafe, sorry I missed it when it was Heidi's, but looks like I may have to bring a date here for dinner sometime. Small and intimate setting.

Yelp
Down the street from the now closed Greek restaurant, we were happy to find Lago Tacos. We ate outside on the patio and it was hard to decide what to order. Almost any typical mex item is available. Our waiter suggested ordering different tacos, so I ordered one grilled chicken and one Al pastore with a side of beans. For a drink I had a big fancy mango margarita (frozen). We also had a nice plate of nachos with guac, and a lavender gin lemonade. Everything tasted great and our waiter checked in on us and was great!

Aurora V.

Yelp
Love the pizza here especially wen they put crushed garlic on mine but lately the pizzas been over cooked n dry

Yelp
I went to Lago Taco for a Happy Hour on Saturday. The restaurant was busy, but we were seated very quickly. I ordered a side of quac, queso blanco, and a plate of street tacos. Everything was reasonably priced and filling. The queso was probably the most noteworthy of everything I ordered. It was thick, savory, and topped with a bit of pico. The chips were good. The guacamole's flavor was lacking a bit. I was disappointed to find the chicken on the street tacos was dry. Definitely a gringo-style taco. The experience wasn't anything spectacular. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back to Lago Taco, but if you're looking for decent, bar style Mexican food that's pretty cheap, then go for it.
google avatar

Lana T.

Yelp
OVERALL: Good (but not authentic) taco spot with good drinks. SERVICE: Our waiter was very prompt and kind. Food came out decently quick. FOOD: Taquitos were average, probably wouldn't get them again. The tacos were flavorful, but the best thing I had that day was the sweet corn cake. I could've eaten 20 of those. PRICE: Happy hour pricing is best, you really get a deal on the tacos. Otherwise they're a bit pricey at about $4-$6 a taco. ATMOSPHERE: this place is almost always busy so it's packed with people.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
Firecracker tacos were superb, about as good as you can realistically expect from an established sports bar-ish place, and no, that's not the backhanded compliment it may sound like. Only been once, but I'll be back soon.
google avatar

Nicole L.

Yelp
Big fan of Lago Tacos - it's not your authentic and intimate Mexican restaurant if you're looking for ambiance, but it's large enough to get a seat even with a larger group and the food and service is great! Their Lago and Pink Grapefruit Margarita's (the cheapest on the menu) are dangerously good. I was also impressed by their $3 mimosas during brunch - great value and taste. (Yes - there is a brunch menu!) 2 tacos is plenty to fill anyone up and also 2+ tacos get you a free side. (Free side = lago rice, refried beans, or sweet corn cake - none of them are anything to write home about, but is a nice gesture. I was able to sub that for fresh fruit during brunch and that was very good!) So far, some of my favorite tacos have been the Ahi Tuna (seriously SO GOOD), Firecracker Shrimp (nice and spicy) and the Fried Avocado. The veggie was a little watery/plain for my preference and we got a bad batch of the grilled walleye tacos the last time we went. (There was something truly off but they comped/replaced the people who ordered that one with no questions asked - I was very grateful for that.) I want to try it again, because the time before it was my boyfriend's favorite taco!
google avatar

Justin D.

Yelp
Got the firecracker shrimp, al pastor, and fried chicken tacos. Firecracker shrimp was pretty good, you can skip the Al pastor. Fried chicken was good, although I wish the chicken was a little more thick & juicy - maybe using chicken thighs would be better for this taco. Overall pretty decent bougie taco place, come for the happy hour drinks and appetizers!

Gaby F.

Yelp
This place has yummy food, a great happy hour and stellar service! Bartender TJ and server Leeza are amazing!! I highly recommend trying out the patio as the ambiance is gorgeous! Also, try anything with chicken tinga or chips and queso and your shoes will be knocked off. PLEASE GIVE THIS PLACE A TRY.

Yelp
Love this place I get it every time I'm in town! The tacos are amazing, this is a great happy hour

Yelp
It has the word Taco in its name so of course they have tacos. And a lot of different kinds to choose from! A lot more than any other Mexican restaurants I've been too. They definitely aren't authentic though. You can pick anywhere from one to three tacos, and it comes with a small side of rice, sweet corn cake or refried beans. My favorite kind is the ahi tuna taco with blasts of flavor you've never tasted on a taco before. Another favorite is the chips and queso. It's sooooo good but don't get too full off of them before your tacos come out. You can also get each kind in a bowl or burrito instead of a taco if you want. I always get so full off of two tacos. They also serve brunch on the weekends until 2pm. $5 bloodys and $3 mimosas. Their bloody comes with a deep fried pickle and ranch dipping sauce, it's delicious. I've never had to wait for a table before but it does fill up. They have a really nice patio and outdoor bar that you don't see really anywhere else. Service can be hit or miss though, and if it's busy it can be slow. Prices are fair and decently priced for what you get.
