The 38 Essential Mexico City Restaurants

"Take a stroll in Bosque de Chapultepec and end the outing with brunch at Lago Algo. This hybrid contemporary art gallery and restaurant is set in a fine example of Mexico’s Brutalist architecture dating back to the late 1960s, with a dining room that overlooks Chapultepec’s lake. The seasonal art exhibits always prove engaging, often taking advantage of the space in creative ways. When you’re done perusing the artwork, try the endive salad, the cheese ravioli with pumpkin broth, or the glazed pork chop with cauliflower and caramelized onion." - Natalia de la Rosa, Daniela Galarza

Gorgeous setting and good service but average food. I was alone and only tried one dish (Tiradito) - it would have been better with normal tostadas - the bread it was served with was hard to bite and not appetising for a ceviche like dish

Went to the gallery exhibition which was amazing. Loved the duration of the exhibit everything worked so well together in the space. The building is also very architecturally unique which I loved. The restaurant was ok. The coffee was good but we got a dessert along with it that left much to be desired, especially for the price. Nice view from the restaurant windows though.

They have some interesting menu. The new dessert with ice cream is surprisingly good! View to the river is nice and the big wall at the back is also cute

Amazing food and super nice atmosphere. Probably one of the best meals we had during our trip. I would definitely recommend a reservation if you’re going at a busier time.

Call and make a reservation if you want to sit close to the water. On a warm nice day you can sit outside. Food is great and made to order so it takes a few minutes to come out. Be patient and it’s worth it. There’s an art show next to the restaurant you can visit before or after your meal. (It closed at 1730) The jocoque based dessert is absolutely delicious with a wonderful balance and not too sweet. The lechón(suckling) is my favorite entree. $$$$

Nice food and atmosphere. The expansiveness of the interior space creates a feeling of compressed largess. The wait staff are polite but mostly leave you to enjoy your meal. They were quite tardy in bringing my second beverage. Overall a nice experience.

Google
visited for the restaurant and its architecture and views, all of which were great. a mysterious black lemonade tasted identical to indian sweet lime soda. locally sourced ingredients made for excellent dishes. unsure if reservation is completely necessary but we got one to be safe. also important to note it is located in the center of the large park so only accessible by car or a reasonably long walk.

We came here on Saturday afternoon thinking it was a cultural center as well as a restaurant but upon arrival there were no exhibits to see and appeared to only be a restaurant. We didn’t have a reservation so we put our names down for a table of 4 and took a walk down by the water. Once we received the text notifying us that our table was ready we were seated at a lovely table with a great view of the water. Service during lunch was pretty spotty, our server disappeared for large chunks of time throughout and when one of my friends ordered a wellness shot our server said that he wouldn’t like it and that it would make him feel weird. The complimentary pastries to start were a nice touch and my friends loved their enfrijoladas. I ordered the eggs with wild mushrooms and asked for a side of the vegetables but it showed up with ham on top instead which was a bummer. My husband got the duck sandwich and said that it was fine. Overall lunch was ok, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to come here and would not recommend this to friends coming to Mexico City.

Yelp
Great place for brunch!! Not only was the dining room stunning but the food and drinks were fantastic! Can't go wrong with any of their chilaquiles options and the horchata coffee was so delicious. Also...bathrooms are beautiful. Def go check them out while you're there lol service was great and they def made it easy as we didn't speak much Spanish. Gallery is also beautiful! And free!!!

Yelp

Yelp
While this restaurant does offer a beautiful view -- the service is terrible. We came in as a walk-in and noticed there were over 8 tables empty. The hostess told us that there were no available tables but could seat us at the bar. Once seated at the bar, I pulled up the restaurant on Open Table and noticed there were numerous available presentation slots -- the earliest being 15 minutes after we were told there was no tables available. I made the reservation and then asked if we could be seated at a table and our reservation honored. The hostess and the shift leader both refused to seat us, despite our confirmed reservation, claiming they do not know that works. We have been traveling to Mexico for several years and have always been blown away by the amazing customer service and experiences we have at restaurants. This place is absolutely TERRIBLE!

Yelp
it's been about a month since i got to visit lago algo and i've dreamt of it every day since. i believe this is one of the most delicious breakfasts i've ever had. that coffee and juice was so die for! i got the red chilaquiles and i could drool just thinking of them. service is phenomenal. the ambiance is lovely with the natural foliage and overloooking the chapultapec lake. we got to walk around the art gallery afterwards which we very much enjoyed. so happy we came here!

Yelp
I read the reviews for this restaurant after sitting down for my reservation and I cannot disagree more. I absolutely loved this place! The inside is absolutely beautiful, we got seated right at the glass to look out at the lake while we enjoyed breakfast. We sadly went on a Monday so we weren't able to walk around in the art gallery after our meal but we will definitely ensure we see it next time. The service here was great! The staff is pretty bilingual and they make sure you are taken care of your entire meal/visit. The food was really good and the coffee was hot and fresh. I got the chilaquiles and a pan de chocolate and both were exceptional. My fiancé got the pan de muerto which was filled with a hazelnut cream. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a good filling meal with great service. Plus, you get to walk through the art gallery when your son or even the Chapultepec forest. We will absolutely be back to visit this restaurant again.

Yelp
Platos pequeños, y de diseñador de platos para revistas. eng The location and the design of the restaurant are amazing. The restaurant and the contemporary art museum are next to each other which makes it interesting, and if you have to make time for your reservation you can spend some time in the museum. It's sooo expensive! I imagine that they are charging you for the lake view... unnecessary in my point of view. The attention is very pretentious and the food is in keeping with the pretentiousness of the place. Small plates, and designer plates for magazines.

Yelp
We went here, for Sunday brunch, on our last day visiting the city. The food was fine and the view was pleasant, but neither were particularly memorable . The overall feel was that of an underperforming restaurant trying to justify high prices with a nice location and nice view. Our buffet was ~$36 USD per person, and sparking wine was ~$21 USD per glass. So, overall, we left sort of sad. The best part of the experience, by far, was the nice walk through park after the meal.

Yelp
Better late than never for a review... Had this amazing brunch experience with my family of 15 at El Lago while visiting Mexico City. They accommodated our party with a call in reservation just 2 hours in advance. Our party was met by 4 extremely charming waiters and a table with a spectacular view. The ambiance is just class with many families enjoying brunch on a Thursday morning. Great delicious food, good drinks, good service. Thanks everyone for a great time and memorable experience with my family.

Yelp
I've been here various times now. I've always have a nice experience but the first one was the best because if the view and because it was dinnrr. I returned now for brunch. I think that's the only it works now but you can always ask if this has changed. The view is always beautiful day or night. Even Though you get a table not that near the window, you will be able yo see the Chapultepec Lake which is a lake inside the humongous Mexican City. Getting here can be a huge adventure. Don't trust completely your GPS and ask for directions At brunch is buffet so you can get what ever you want. Order a mimosa. It is going a good mix :)

Yelp
El lugar bonito, pero la comida malona, el huevo a la cazuela la salsa con las cascaritas del tomate, mordí un clavo de olor, café muy fuerte y amargo el macchiato, el americano malo, mmm no se si regresaré. Un poco para lo que es.

Yelp
El Lago is a beautiful place to dine, scenic view of the lake and fountain. The service is excellent with polite staff and courteous waiters. They are attentive and very kind. The table linen, crockery and cutlery are upto the mark. The ingredients used in the dishes are fresh and good quality. Loved this place and will return for sure.

Yelp
Incredible venue/space/view but the food is horrendous. Go for a drink and check out the gallery... don't order ANYTHING to eat

Yelp
The dessert was great, as well as the appetizers. For the main dish I had a salmon dish which tasted amazing.. however a few hours after eating the salmon I had stomach pain / food poisoning. I was the only one at my table who developed food poisoning after the meal so I think it was the salmon. But everything else was fantastic. Only giving 2 stars because of the food poisoning..willing to try again and give hopefully a better review rating.

Yelp
We went on a Sunday. Terrible service, the buffet meals were just fine and the drinks horrendous, my lemonade was acidified, the waiters were very inattentive and the place was very dirty, chairs, umbrellas and the floor. I give it 2 stars because the architecture of the place it's really beautiful, it's a shame that the actual building is the only good thing about the experience. Don't waste your time and money.

Yelp
Have been here twice now: once for my brothers wedding and once for Sunday brunch. In both instances the service was amazing, and the food was delicious. The ambiance at night is beautiful and romantic. During the day it is relaxed and peaceful. The food during brunch was good, there were lots of options and the price was fair.

Yelp
The location, view, and service were great as was the interior decoration aesthetically pleasing. We had bottomless mimosas in the afternoon which is always a plus, unfortunately I was not a fan of the food. The chicken wings were extremely sweet for my liking and the salmon I order had a hair on it that ruined my appetite. My friend had a mushroom appetizer and ordered the fish of the day which she enjoyed.

Yelp
A very pleasant surprise on a very old restaurant well over 50 years old. The menu is a very nice mirage of continental and Mexican food. The use of truffles and Mexican mushrooms work awesome. The white truffle soup was worth coming back for. The beef tartar with black truffles was forgettable but good. Please do not let the hamon iberico be pushed on you without knowing the price ($750 pesos ... What tooo much for what it is). The venison was not paired withe the sauce or the pineapple very well. The combination of the pineapple potato tart and sauce way over powered the deer. They have an awesome Mexican wine selection. While they do not have a sommelier, the captain is very well trained. The restaurant itself is in bad need of a facelift. The table clothes are way to large for the tables. Enjoy !!!! It is worth trying this place.

Yelp
I had just flown in on a red eye, so we showed up here for breakfast right when it opened and we were not disappointed. Fresh fruit and pastries, delicious mexican breakfast foods and a beautiful view of the lake and surrounding Chapultapec park. You MUST order fresh pressed juice, it will change your life.

Yelp
Beware of this restaurant! A friend and I ordered several dishes to share. The octopus appetizer was definitely NOT octopus--I don't want to even think about what I put into my mouth. The burger was not beef and again I don't want to think about it. Needless to say, I did not eat even 10% of my expensive meal. The environment is beautiful unfortunately the food was suspicious. Even the "Grand" margarita, which was described as a top shelf, was the "soft serve" style margarita you get at a carnival. I think this happen because it was a Wednesday afternoon, empty and I came in speaking English and dressed like an American tourist. I noticed the professionally dressed after work native crowd had a much better experience.

Yelp
This was a very nice restaurant. The prices where not too ridiculous, but the food wasn't great. I ate pasta which was good, but then finished an octopus dish that someone at my table didn't want. The view was pretty and the people where nice so it wasn't terrible. I'd say go, but don't expect the world's best food.

Yelp
A place to celebrate life overlooking a lake with a fountain and city lights. Went for dinner and ordered a jar of 'clericot' made with a house wine. Refreshing. Enjoyed some innovative salads (skip the kale one), a variety of entrees from seafood to beef, my beef filet was overcooked though the sauce made up for it. Fantastic butter, good bread, music was piped in blues, jazz and at the right listening level. A place for a special occasion too as there were a lot of family/couple celebrations indoor and outdoor!

Yelp
Beautiful view of Lago Chapultepec, nice food, and the architecture takes you in a journey back to the 1960s
