The Surprising Link Between Green River Soda and the Chicago River | Eater Chicago

"A Davenport soda fountain that honors the beverage's local origins by keeping the lime-flavored soda on tap year-round, offering a continuous, hometown example of the drink where it was first invented." - Aimee Levitt

This is absolutely the best chocolate I’ve had in any state I’ve lived in. We went for their famous hot fudge sundae and a Quad City special. The ice cream is exceptionally smooth and creamy, and with the hot fudge and whipped cream, it is a heavenly treat. The Quad City special has strawberry and vanilla ice cream with strawberries, bananas and whipped cream. We could not resist the allure of the candy counter and took home a huge caramel apple and a pound of mixed chocolates. Well worth a stop for a treat.

The historical photos and artifacts on the walls plus the quaint booths and tables take you back in time to an Old World soda fountain shop. The ice cream sundaes are amazing and service, friendly and impeccable. Then there are the chocolates - gazing through the long, wooden-framed glass display case is like looking through a jeweler's display, but these are edible jewels! High quality, delicious chocolates that must be savored. What a glorious experience. Go there. Now. Today!

I have never been more impressed with a chocolate place with an old-time feel soda fountain and so many good sugar-free options.. The regular chocolates are amazing as well. Iowa is blessed to have such an authentic gem in it.

This business has been in the same family for at least 3 generations. Everything is homemade from the Chocolates. of which there is an abundance, to the ice cream. I had and recommend the Turtle Sundae. One friend had a banana split & the other a plain dish of vanilla. We left with smiles and a couple of boxes of Chocolates.

Google
Absolutely wonderful chocolate and confectionery shop! We were stopping in on our way back home to Chicago and we are so glad that we stumbled upon this wonderful store. The staff were so friendly and helpful ... they made all of our choices even that much more sweet. And wow! The chocolates were absolutely fantastic! I really appreciate that they offered the ability to make your own specialty chocolates box, and they had many of the spring and Easter items prepackaged and ready to Grab & Go. I got many items to fill our Easter baskets

Google
Product arrived late; some of the chocolates were stuck together even though it was packed with an ice pack; many chocolate pieces were chipped or scraped on the face of the chocolates indicative that the chocolates were scooped and not placed in the box. No petitioner of any sort to separate the dark and milk chocolate pieces - all Thrown into the box. Presentation was very lacking. It was just a pile of squares and rectangular shaped chocolates piled on top of each other. Product did not present well when opening the top cover. Noted was a lot of crumbs in the box as well; indicating that it was the bottom of the barrel of a pile of chocolates that were to be served. It seems as though the chocolates were scooped, opposed to placed in the container as there was much evidence of crumbs and chips sitting at the bottom of the box. This company came very highly recommended. Very unhappy with the product; it will be the last time I ever buy chocolate from this chocolate vendor. David Wilder Wesley Chapel, Fl

This is a great little candy, ice cream and lunch spot. We had sandwiches and they were really good. The cherry phosphate was amazing. The chocolate malt was really great. Tons of candy and treats to choose from. It’s a great stop.

I haven't ever stopped into the Davenport Lagomarcino's before. I used to stop over at the Moline location with friends on certain Wednesdays after getting a meal nearby for ice cream. I wanted much the same after a sandwich at Village Corner Deli today, so I walked over to satiate my sweet tooth. The interior of this Lagomarcino's is much the same as I remember the Moline location. Glossy stained wood display cases line the wall opposite the entrance with all manner of chocolate confections. The floor is made up of a patterned tile surface throughout the confectionary and dining room area, while the walls are painted a soft pink color. Wooden booths and comfortable looking stools are spread throughout the dining area and bar at the soda fountain. Unfortunately for me, the dining area and soda fountain were still closed for the winter months, so I wasn't going to be getting ice cream today. I still wanted something sweet, so I talked with one of the employees at the confectionary counter about getting some truffles. She mentioned they had pre-packaged assortments of truffles available, so I opted for a pack of those. I paid for them shortly thereafter and left to start driving home. The truffles were as I remembered them from Moline. Hard chocolate coating a richly flavored, soft interior. I had a few from the assortment during my drive and opted to save the majority to share at work or consume later in the weekend. I'll be visiting again when the soda fountain is open and I can get some ice cream during warmer months. I definitely wished I'd stopped over to this Lagomarcino's before. It's the same great interior and sweets as Moline, but much closer to home. Thanks again, Lagomarcino's!

Yelp
Greeted by friendly staff, family owner and operated. The candy is so melt in your mouth good. Literally melts in your mouth. The flavors of the candy linger the ambiance is so nice and comforting. Brings ya back to days of old. Definitely worth the stop

Yelp
I've actually never visited either of the Lagomarcino's locations in person, but instead discovered them when they were mentioned in a newspaper advice column a few years back, where the author was listing some of her favorite things, Lagomarcino's candies being one of them. With a pretty wicked sweet tooth myself, I couldn't wait to check these guys out, and ended up placing the first of many online orders with them over these past few years. In fact, I received my most recent order last week, just in time for holiday indulging. Having now tried a wide range of their candies and chocolates, I can honestly say that's there NOTHING of theirs that I haven't loved, but special favorites in no particular order are their super-rich lemon bark, jars of homemade hot fudge sauce, a wide variety of chocolate-covered bites (cherries, strawberries, sea salt caramel, bourbon caramel, etc.), and cherry sour balls (I think I'm actually addicted to these, lolz). And a special mention goes to their chocolate-covered sponge candy, which is one of their signature items and is pretty much out of this world. Like I said, I've covered a LOT of ground with Lagomarcino's, sampling their various offerings... Being a California boy, See's Candies is my go-to sweets supplier, but I have to say that Lagomarcino's runs a VERY close second, and might even take the top spot if they had a location here in Los Angeles. Since I know that's highly unlikely to happen, I guess I'll just have to make a trip to Illinois or Iowa one of these days and check out their shop(s) in person. That way, I can also finally sample their old-school soda fountain, deli and homemade ice creams. Actually, come to think of it, it's probably better that I don't have a Lagomarcino's nearby, since I would be waaay too tempted to eat myself into sugary, chocolatey oblivion there -- but what a way to go! BTW, they take great care in packing their candy for shipping. I've ordered from them in both summer and winter, and my orders always come through in perfect (and tasty) condition. Thanks, and keep up the great work, Lagomarcino's!

Yelp
This place was advertised in a travel book. We strolled around shopping a bit in East Davenport. Spouse ordered a corned beef sandwich. It was pressed and made in front of us. They use coke syrup and carbonated water to make your pop. I wasn't hungry, but ordered a scoop of delicious English toffee ice-cream. Noticed the vintage Orange Crush syrup dispenser and took a picture for my sister who collects orange crush. Yummy ice cream and very friendly. Review 82 in 2023.

Yelp
It is a must stop when in the area. For me I only get through the Quads every couple years but this has become a must stop. Headed to Sturgis this August and can't wait to stop in and show the rest of the gang why this place is so great. The cherry sundae is outstanding, tart and not sweet, it's perfect. But their sandwiches are very good as well. Can't beat the chocolates. It's March now and I'm already looking forward to this.

Yelp
Yummy! Visiting family and they suggested this place. Just like an old time ice cream parlor. Great portions, good prices, super service. Also bought some candy. Who could resist? Next time I'm in the area, I will most definitely return.

Tami F.

Yelp
The woman who waited on us, told us about the history. She was very knowledgeable about all the chocolates as well. We bought chocolates for ourselves and others. It has been years since I had visited. They definitely don't disappoint.

Yelp
Beautiful little nuggets of chocolate, filled with stuff, and you can't wait to find out whai;s next. Very scrumptious and highly reccomended.

Yelp
This was our second outing to this location and it will likely remain a must-do when we're in the QC. It's a small but lovely shop in the Village of East Davenport with a candy counter (so hard to resist!) and a dine-in seating area for their luscious ice crream treats. I'm sure the chocolates and other candies are great, but we came for the old-fashioned soda fountain. Last year (still COVID recovery), the only seating was at the counter on classic red spinny stools, where you could watch the server prepare your treat. This year we sat in the Presidential booth where the Obamas were served! If you like hot fudge, this is the place for you. Last year I went with a simple hot fudge sundae, this year upped the ante to a banana split. These are old-school solid treats served in classic soda shop glassware and amazingly tasty too. They also serve a limited menu of non-ice cream classics like (grilled cheese). Don't miss this place - it's a gem!

Scott M.

Yelp
The classic and long time favorite chocolate, candies and soda fountain restaurant and store, with over 125 years of service and old time confectionery goodness in the Village of East Davenport for around 26 now. Every thing you would expect for the original store is available at the Village of East Davenport Location except its large and has a small sitting area outside. They make seasonal candies and treat fresh at the stores. Like Caramel Apples, dark and milk chocolate types of Sponge Candy, Toffee, Chocolate covered Oranges, Mint Melts Ways, ice creams and much more. The have a old time soda fountain where you can get classic soda drinks made for you at the counter or brought to your table. Unfortunately, the soda fountain counter shuts down in late September until Spring, so they can focus on ramping up making candies, ice creams and caramel apples for the seasonal production season. As the demand for those items are so great they at this time had to close the fountain counters at both stores to increase space and production. They do serve soups and sandwiches here as well but as the fountain counter closed I am unsure, if they are still serving them at this time. The service is friendly and always pleasant. The business is family owned and the was a James Beard award winner. Any thing you get is good and well worth the trip any time of the year. Make it your family new favorite place to stop! Note: Try the Sponge Candy. Get both Dark and Milk to of set each other as the actually par well together and make for a very smooth and delicious tease. Even if you don't like one or the other chocolate try it this way you can try the chocolates, but also have a new experience with chocolate. Now for those who who have ever had Sponge candy it sort of tastes like a butterfinger, but with no peanuts and is just airy caramelized sugar. Is a unique flavor. One note though, it has to be made with very low humidity. If the humidity becomes too high during its making the sponge collapses and becomes dense and hard. But when made correctly, which is usually almost always it's heavy.

Yelp
what a great place. people were very friendly and we tried one of everything. Not really. Great for grandkids at the original soda fountain.

Yelp
" Wow They Have A lot Of Different Things " We visited the Lagomarcino's in Davenport Iowa. This is a famous old fashion shop that has an unusual wide variety of yummy items to choose from. You can have a sandwich, a sundae, some candy, etc. The Shop is famous because President Obama and his wife Michele have visited Lagomarcino's, and there is a picture of them sitting in a wooden booth of the shop. We concentrated on our visit on the ice cream and candy items. I had a Turtle Sundae which was delicious. It's worth the visit !

Yelp
Lagomarcino's definitely satisfied our afternoon lunch cravings We boarded the Channel Cat river taxi in Moline and crossed the Mississippi River disembarking at the dock in East Davenport. A short walk later we wandered up to Lagomarcino's after our daughters noticed they served ice cream ....sounded like a tempting snack in a hot summer afternoon. The shop was nicely air conditioned and reminded me of an old time soda bar and ice cream parlor. I'm not sure if this is an original location but the business was established in 1909 and it was nicely decorated with old family photos and historic photos of Davenport & the Lagomarcino's family business. As you enter they have a candy bar displaying their custom chocolates and and other sweet goodies. There's a long soda bar with stools and a parlor with private wooden booths where you can discreetly enjoy your ice cream sundae with your date. The booth we chose to sit in was coincidently the same booth that former President Obama and First Lade Michelle Obama sat in during a visit to Lagomarcino's during his Presidency. It's marked with a a small brass plaque indicating a presidential visit had occurred there. As for the food we came for the ice cream sundaes but we also ordered sandwiches from their small lunch menu. My girls really enjoyed their turkey sandwich, my son enjoyed his grilled ham and cheese and I devoured my grilled Reuben with sauerkraut, and the side of crunchy dill pickles! We ordered the "Mississippi Marvel Sundae" which was delicious & the "All That Jazz Sundae" which was also delicious and very sweet thanks to the melted marshmallow drizzled over the sundae. We were very content after our lunch at Lagomarcino's on our weekend visit to the shop that we decided to eat there one more time before leaving town. We were a little bummed that Monday's aren't the day to come if you want one of their yummy sandwiches....their sandwiches guy must be off on Mondays! But they still serve their delicious homemade ice cream. This place is definitely worth a stop...especially if you're with the kiddos. Ours loved it!

Yelp
Stopped in for lunchtime dessert while in town for business. Wasn't overly impressed. I had a turtle sundae and expected the hot fudge to be out of this world amazing. But it was just ok. Maybe I'm a little jaded because I live near no less than 6 old fashioned ice cream parlors and have had better ice cream closer to home. Definitely a cute place to check out if you're in the area, though. Just don't expect to have the best sundae of your life.
google avatar

Yelp
The lunch menu at Lagomarcino's is very simple, mainly consisting of sandwiches you could easily make at home. My cousin and I were looking for something simple and quick in The Village of East Davenport, and this fit the bill perfectly. I got a grilled peanut butter and jelly on homemade bread. I liked it. Also, on the way out, I picked up a s'mores candy bar to try later. It was REALLY good, something I'd gladly purchase again. I think ice cream and candy are meant to the stars of the show at Lagomarcino's, and if my humble candy bar is anything to go by, they do a great job. While their lunch options fly under the radar, given the great sandwich shops in the neighborhood, the sandwiches at Lago's will definitely do in a pinch.

Joel J.

Yelp
How sweet it is to find this place! The sugar snd chocolate smell as you walk it is delightful and mouthwatering like a cookie factory. I wish I could have a decadent banana split daily. If I lived in Moline I would be here at least once a week. This place rocks. Think chocolate fudge ,whip cream , Marchiano cherries , truffles , and every sweet thing in a chocolate factory. 5 star sweetness !
google avatar

Morgan W.

Yelp
Cute little shop to get refreshments and a bite to eat also to get some sweets. Service was great and we got our food fast and one of the best-grilled cheese I have had.
google avatar

Dan F.

Yelp
Tom, the guy who runs things, is the quintessential small business owner. He has a kind word, a wink, and a firm handshake for everyone who stops in. This place is straight up old school soda shop. I got a chocolate egg cream for 'f' sake. They have a nice selection of sandwiches and milk shakes. And don't forget the candy, it's all delicious. If you are ever in the neighborhood, go, run, sit and enjoy the transport to a time long ago. And if you're lucky, Tom might give you a tour of his "Italian Willy Wonka" candy shop.

Paula S.

Yelp
A very sweet little lunch spot. The menu is extremely limited; maybe ten sandwiches to choose from. Simple food but fresh. I think the ice cream is the star here!
google avatar

Yelp
Gotta do another review on Lagos, just to reiterate how awesome this place is. My sister got married about a month ago and we took some pictures down in the East Village. It was about 3:00 p.m. and pretty deserted. My husband had the brilliant idea to see if we could take a few pictures at the counter with ice cream as props. He went in and Tom readily agreed to this proposal. Our photographer was allowed behind the counter and we pretty much hogged 1/3 of the store without anyone complaining or asking us to leave. Like always, the malts and shakes we ordered were delicious and worth eating even if spilled all over my sister's white dress. The experience was very memorable and I wouldn't expect anything less of this family owned business. ALSO-the hot chocolate served at the end of the Lagomarcino's Coco Beano 5k is heavenly. Best I've ever had.
google avatar

Brian B.

Yelp
Over all, this was a good eating experience. The confectionery is far better then the restaurant, but still worth grabbing a bite. Sandwiches were nothing to write home about, but they were satisfying and fresh. I can't remember the name now, but they have a special green lime soday drink. Order it. If you leave here without sampling some of the candies...well, just don't do it.
google avatar

Matthew Q.

Yelp
Great stop on our trip thru the East Village. Soda was delicious and the ice cream Devine !
google avatar

Colleen B.

Yelp
We stopped by Lagomarcino's for lunch and were not disappointed. We split a chicken salad sandwich and a hot fudge banana split. Friendly service, tasty food, cute town.
google avatar

Tara N.

Yelp
Great spot to grab some lunch. Their sandwiches are good and who doesn't love a homemade malt or shake afterwards? Love the small town vibe of this place.

Taffy G.

Yelp
We were here 2 years ago, and it was a beautiful day to take a little walk, and look for eagles. After a visit to thr wild bird shop, we stopped in here. It's just as charming and old-fashioned as we remember. Great hot fudge sundae & banana splits. Old fashioned candy counter, too. ***************************************** Old fashioned ice cream parlor. . Hand dipped candies.. What a gem!! Reminds me of Gertie's that used to be located next to the Colony Theatre at 58th & Kedzie. I had the Luck of the Irish sundae: Mint chocolate chip ice cream. .whipped cream. . & a green maraschino cherry...mmmm
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
We ordered a root beer float and raspberry shake. Fun place with a real soda fountain. Staff was friendly, had a great time.
google avatar

Connie H.

Yelp
lagomarcino's is an old fashion looking ice cream shop. nice, laid back atmosphere. came here for the first time and got a turtle sundae and a chili. (I'm a sweet/salty mix type of person). chili was decent. homemade .. gave us lots of saltines. ha. nothing too amazing though. now the turtle sundae on the other hand..amazing!!! just for their ice cream, i'd totally bring people back here. the caramel was very unique...delicious...stuck out the most in the sundae. I'd definitely recommend their ice cream, just make sure you get something with caramel and you won't be disappointed. servings were pretty small for the price. just enough for me since i can't eat too much ice cream at a time. a nice, cute place for a quick (delicious) snack.
google avatar

Emily T.

Yelp
Great stuff! We stopped here for ice cream after a tasty lunch at the Village Corner Deli down the street. This was a perfect ending to a lunch date. So many options to choose from, the best part, they make their own ice cream! Grab some chocolates to go!
google avatar

Natalie C.

Yelp
Favorite place to eat in Davenport East Village. Have gotten a private tour of the back of the store where the chocolates are made and you can say it is what I think of when I think of heaven. Best chocolates are the dark chocolate sea salt caramels - nothing beats them...well the homemade peanut butter cups are also really good! And don't get me started on the ice-cream - homemade and out of this world!
google avatar

Debbie L.

Yelp
There's a good selection of ice cream, sundaes and other specials. It has a vintage feel and prices are affordable if you're coming from a big city. They also serve hot foods and special drinks and floats. The ice cream and candies are homemade too!
google avatar

Jessica D.

Yelp
The ultimate old fashioned soda fountain. Delectable sundaes and sodas, amazing fudge sauce from a family recipe. Really nice sweets and chocolate confections for sale, also available themed for the holidays. I prefer the East Davenport location to the Moline because it's a little neater and more pleasantly themed.
google avatar

Lindsay M.

Yelp
This place is a must visit. It's a family owned confectionary delight. The cherry phosphates from the soda fountain make my belly giggle! Also, it is a wonderful lunch spot... the ham salad sandwiches remind me of my grandmas and the bread is always bakery fresh! When u visit, you must try their homemade hot fudge! Also be sure to get some sponge candy and dark chocolate sea salt caramels for the road...so so tasty! Plus, the family that runs this magical place is absolutely lovely! Great place for kids... My daughter salivates when we start driving into the village. Keep your eye out for a feature article in Paula Deen's magazine this coming month about their chocolate Easter eggs!!

Misty W.

Yelp
So glad we stopped here, Friendly people and very good ice cream. The service was good, the soda jerk was quick to take our order. We sat at the counter, which brought back many memories from our childhood. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Brian H.

Yelp
They have good ice-cream and candies in a really cool old-school soda fountain setting. Neat place.
google avatar

Jess L.

Yelp
Best hot fudge sundae in the world! Ok sandwiches on good homemade bread. Good candies. A little pricey.
google avatar

Christy P.

Yelp
Everything was tasty- Mississippi mud sundae with whole serving of fudge was delicious. Best mint chip I've tasted in a long time- not fake green and LOTS of chocolate. Might have to wait a minute or two for a table.
google avatar

Tim L.

Yelp
East Village location is not the real deal. The history is in Moline and the East Village location often has poor service and long waits. Skip this and either go to Moline or don't go at all.

Emily B.

Yelp
Best hot fudge in town. Such a great place to take my daughter on one of our mommy daughter fun days. Our most recent visit was after a hot visit to the spray park. We shared a hot fudge made with their chocolate ice cream with an extra side of caramel on it. Amazing doesn't even begin to describe it. It is a little pricy for what you get but when you factor in the old time experience of the soda shop feel it is well worth it.

Amanda R.

Yelp
Unbelievable confections! This has been a special treat shoppe to take my family to one a number of occasions.
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
this place is adorable. when you walk in you are in a chocolateir: i suggest the sponge candy, formally called fairy food. then you walk around, it looks like a U shape, and you see a quaint soda fountain cafe. tall wooden booths suprised me, but make the experience really fun. they have some really good sandwiches, and i ordered soup there once and was really happy with it. among their sandwiches, and i know everyone is not a fan, but they have braunchweiger! was very suprised and it was very good. the staff makes sure they are taking care of you. also went there for brunch with my family, a group of 6. . it was a tad slow. i do not remember what they are called, but it is something like a milk cremes, where there is carbonated water and milk/chocoate milk mixd together. it sounds weird,so i tried it (the chocolate), and loved it! i am very nastalgic of that drink and want to go back just for it. my old art teacher said that she took a group of students to paint near the cafe for a competition and the cafe was very hospitable and offered everyone hot chocolate parking sucks, but i have never seen the place full so you can usually find a place in one of the 10ish parking spots.
google avatar

M A.

Yelp
Very charming place. Friendly service. Original soda pop was a treat. Simple lunch menu, but done well.

Andrew M.

Yelp
Lagomarcino's is amazing. They have something for everyone. We usually stop in for a malt (the eat with a spoon kind) and take home a box of toffee. The toffee is the best I've ever eaten without a doubt. They have delicious truffles, turtles, sugar free candy, and homemade ice cream. The truffles are $0.75 and come in at least a dozen flavors. There is one counter filled with kid favorites (sour candies, gummy worms, etc). Sandwiches are good if you're in the mood for a light lunch, but the sweets are the real reason to stop in. The owner is a really nice guy, always making sure you're having a great visit.

Danielle S.

Yelp
This place is great! Vintage feel with awesome fudge sundaes. The only thing is it is a bit pricey, but definitely worth a try!

Laina J.

Yelp
Rye bread. Ice cream. Chocolates. Vanilla Egg Creme. Hot caramel sundae. Hot fudge. Sponge candy. It's all amazing!!!

Lois W.

Yelp
Stopped in for some mints for my son's graduation party. Woman at the counter was rude and unhelpful. Left w/ a small package of over-priced gummy bears. This was in the Village of E. Davenport.

Yolanda H.

Yelp
My grandfather has been coming to this place for years. So many delicious options and ice cream! May have to wait, but it is well worth it!
