I Thought Eating Food Was the Best Part of Traveling. I Was Wrong. | Eater

"An iconic mini-chain burger spot inside a gas station where stools and tables that once gave the place a counter-shop vibe are now pushed aside; staff were friendly but understandably wary during the pandemic. The author had long-awaited a green chile cheeseburger here but found the moment hollow—eating alone in the car, the burger failed to justify a long drive and the fries arrived unsalted, underscoring how the anxious, precautionary atmosphere had stripped the usual personality and pleasure from the meal." - Noah Galuten

This place was the absolute worst! There’s a McDonald’s on the next block you’re better off going to. We sat on a dirty table because none of them were wiped down. The woman at the register was unfriendly. The manager had a bad attitude and it took 30 minutes longer to get my kids food than the rest of our families. The manager said she checked on it four times. It shouldn’t take that long to make a grilled cheese. Manager was Very rude the man who was well groomed and presentable I was hoping was the manager wasn’t. The manager claimed that was her normal attitude. I can clearly understand customer service isn’t for everyone but when it’s not seen an alternative place of employment. The fries tasted like Eucharist!

Google
Delicious burgers with fries that taste like in n out. A bit pricey, but overall a good experience.

Google
Hands down, one of the best green chile cheese burgers in New Mexico! Fast casual style and the perfectly charred burger with a juicy taste was amazing. Not to mention - the fries are phenomenal! Freshly cut and fried to perfection! The bar inside gives this location a great ambiance of a burger joint with plenty of options for everyone to enjoy. Patio seating is also available. For the price, this place is the hardest to beat in town. Don’t be fooled by any other burger joint in town. They know what they’re doing here!

Google
My wife and I came here last night for dinner. The way they have the place set up seems fine like other burger joints. You order first, get a number, then find a table/bar area to sit at and they’ll bring the food to you. I ordered the Laguna Burger, the burger was perfectly cooked and the green chili adds a nice spice to the burger. my wife ordered the Laguna Wimp with fries and a vanilla shake. She said she enjoyed her burger and fries. We shared the shake which was also great. I feel that the staff is under staffed or the workflow was off a bit. The employee taking orders at the register was making shakes between orders. Which I understand gives time for the orders to get cooked and brought out to everyone at a timely manner. They could benefit to having a dedicated shake maker. But having the drink fridge behind where people are ordering, which is kind of already in a tight spot, is a bit awkward. It does take a bit for the food to come out but you can see them making the burgers and fries are fresh. We’ll definitely be back again to try out some of the other different items on the menu and update accordingly.

Google
Always a great place for a burger. My favorite is the classic Laguna burger with green chili and cheese. My wife likes the mushroom and Swiss. The fries are thin cut and the onion petals are crunchy. Shakes are excellent.

We went to Laguna Burger multiple times while we were visiting for the Balloon Fiesta. We really enjoyed our visits. The food was a little slow, but tasty. We really loved the outdoor seating and the fact they were dog friendly.

Google
We ordered online as we were driving through Albuquerque. It looked like a good place to go. We arrived 5 minutes prior to the time we indicated. When we began eating our burgers on the road they were cold. They had been cooked but must have been waiting for a long time prior to our arrival. Flavor was decent but being cold, was a huge disappointment.

Google
Will go back, friendly staff, nice looking bar and the food was soooo good. My coworkers all were satisfied with the portions and taste.

Yelp
Partner and I don't eat a lot of red meat. But once in a while, I crave a burger. Laguna was good. Every thing was fresh. Counter service was easy. The menu was easy to read. Server was friendly and answered our question. I wanted to love the burger! Unfortunately it was dry. (We weren't asked how we wanted it cooked. I personally prefer medium rare to medium.) I understand that there is risk involved when serving meat. I just want a juicy burger! It wasn't. The fries were good; there was plenty. I will try them again. People watching was fun as we waited. We enjoyed our first time here. So close to being perfect! for next time!

Yelp
If you are a local, a "burqueno" if you will, what is the first place that comes to mind when you want a "Green Chile Cheeseburger"? That's a hot topic. Some people would say Lotaburger, or Rex's. We actually mentioned both. My boyfriend said Laguna Burger, and I passed thinking, you want to drive all the way out to Laguna? The one at the Pit Stop is the one that came to my mind, but he reminded me that there is one in town now. That's riiiiggght. So, that's where we went, he's never been. I've been to the Pit Stop location in Laguna Pueblo, as well as the one across from Route 66 Casino off I-40, and yes, I've been to this location as well. it wasn't too late, about 7 pm, and not busy at all. No line, but about a half dozen tables already seated. He got the Laguna Burger and I went with the Mushroom Swiss Wimp. It was not long before our food arrived. Both burgers looking great and of course I grab a fry off his plate. It was nice and fresh, hot. I sprinkled a lil salt on em, they needed it, hahaha! I picked up my burger and went in for a bite. It was good, filled with a lot of onions and mushrooms along with a healthy slice of swiss cheese. The only thing missing, was some heat. My burger was not hot. The patty didn't just come off the grill. The onions and mushrooms, basically room temp. Luckily for me, I wasn't craving anything, I wasn't excitedly waiting for my burger. At what I could and left it at that. I was not impressed. I checked in when we came in and wondered why the 3 star rating with almost 400 reviews, now, I can see why. No one ever wants to go to a burger joint and get a cold burger with a patty and condiments that were cooked in advance.

Yelp
Cam here on a Friday for lunch pickup and the place was packed. Got the regular Laguna Burger with fries for my dad and a breakfast wimp and prickly pear lemonade for myself. The burger was plenty with 2 patties, but the patties could've been cooked a little bit more as they were still pinkish. A little pricey, but food came out quickly. 2024 #74

Yelp
As far as burgers go this was a good burger it was juicy and cook well. The toppings were fresh and tasted good. The service was good and the staff was friendly. The restaurant be thing that was not great was the fires. They lacked any kind of seasoning on them and were okay nothing to be excited about.
google avatar

Yelp
Expensive and bland and not exceptionally fresh. My burger came loaded with toppings but not anything I would choose to go back for.

Yelp
At 11 am they had a line out the door, so I left. Came in just after 1pm and it was busy, busy !! Getting through the line took a long time but my food came out pretty quickly. I ordered the salmon salad, so I'm sure a well-done burger would have taken longer. As for the staff I can't comment much because they barely said anything to me except the total of my order. I can say the guy on the fry station is a machine ! He was killing it back there. If he had a tip jar I would have tipped him for a beautiful performance of efficiency and skill. The lemonade is ok. The salad is ok. Their burgers must be really good to stand in line, but I don't eat burgers. So I guess I'm missing out. The salmon is a bit over cooked and the croutons are stale. But the price is ok. $16 for lunch.

Yelp
This morning my wife and I went to Laguna Burger at opening time, on our way out of town. We ordered a Laguna burger to go with extra green chili and no mustard. The first bite I took I didn't taste any chili, but I did taste mustard. I then took another bite, and I still couldn't taste any chili. However once again I thought I could taste mustard. That's when I took my burger apart, and I found mustard on the bottom bun. I called the restaurant to let them know what happened, and the person I talked to apologized and just said that sometimes mistakes happen in the kitchen.

Yelp
Well I LOVE the Laguna Burger product - delicious. But the service is just so bad. When we walked and walked up to the counter - no hello, good evening - just a solid stare. So disappointing. The girl that brought our order o the table was at least a little kinder. But just ruins the whole thing.

Yelp
The Laguna burger with fries is the best item on the menu the meat is always fresh cooked when ordered green chile is flavorful and not to hot just right and there French fries are so so good ! The kids menu is great they can get a smaller hamburger or grilled cheese sandwich which is made like you would at home not skimpy on the cheese and grilled perfect . Love the house margaritas also and they were very courteous . They have music playing 80's hard rock and it's just not for everyone trying to enjoy their meal . It doesn't bother me but it kinda irritates my friend lol !

Yelp
I cannot remember the last time I had such a wonderful perfect burger. The place is hopping at lunch time, so don't expect your food in a hurry. But it is so worth the wait. The burger is perfectly seasoned and flavorful; the french fries are good, but the onion petals are out of this world!! The patio is dog-friendly and it was very cold and windy when we visited, which we appreciated because the pigeons are hungry and numerous. Loved this visit and will return next time I'm through Albuquerque!

Yelp
This place has gone downhill. We were respectful and pleasant and tipped, but staff didn't even say hello. It was just "what do you want to order?". Then they got our order wrong twice despite us ordering clearly, and were incredibly rude when we asked to have it corrected stating that "that's what it said on the ticket", dropping new food and storming off not acknowledging our "thank you". Fries were dry as if days old. Salad unimpressive. All expensive. Total bummer. Maybe staff aren't treated well or compensated fairly? Totally possible too.

Yelp
This was our order - two dogs with nothing but cheese and a small frito pie without cheese. Do you have diet soda - yes, diet Pepsi. Received one hot dog with cheese loaded with raw chopped red onion and the small frito pie with cheese. Diet coke spout broken, only Diet Dr. pepper. Server was same as order taker and just stared at us. I wonder if the kid was high as a kite.

Steven P.

Yelp
Dirty, dirty, dirty. Food was okay. Place was a mess. Employees rude . And did I mention it was a mess?

Yelp
Came in on a Friday night and they weren't too busy, but it was a 30+ min wait for three burgers, fries, and a patty melt. Deja was on the register and soooo sweet. Talk about customer service! The guys prepping the food were also friendly and helped us decide what to order. The food was super slow to come out and when I went back to order a second side of fries, the wait was almost as long as it was for the entire order even though we saw the fries sitting in the baskets waiting to be served. Minus one star because they don't have unsweetened tea in bottles or dispensers. They said they were done brewing for the day. At 6:15 PM. Seems early to stop brewing tea and the bottled offerings are unfortunately only sweet tea. Minus one star for Yoli who is perhaps the most impolite and grouchy person ever. She was rude to Deja, she was rude to me, she was rude to my dad. All of these instances were separate and I hope this is just her having a bad night and not the way she usually treats people. She should not be in customer service if this is her usual behavior. The fries were excellent. The burgers were a good size, but the green chile wasn't hot. The meat needed seasoning.

Yelp
Great food. great service. It was clean. I would recommend this place to eat out. Kids friendly environment.

Yelp
We were on a quest for finding the best green chili burger in ABQ. The place had a darn good version of a green chili burger. Service was quick. They also serve beer, in case that helps washing down the burger!

Yelp
The best burger in the universe flat out! I know food, like so many other things, is very subjective but...... I have tried so many other combinations of burgers and I always go back to the Laguna Burger! Now there is a complication to the recipe, the only location that is to that level is the Pit Shop at the Laguna Pueblo, all the other locations are hit and miss, why?? I don't understand for the ingredients are exactly the same! So the verdict is, drive to the Pueblo for an extraordinary burger experience!!!!
google avatar

Gerrit K.

Yelp
Great green chile cheese burger, good fries. Hard to go wrong! I even enjoy their frito pie and green chile stew. Counter service, friendly cashier, nice clean open seating area, and relatively quick food delivery make it a convenient enjoyable experience.
google avatar

Yelp
Having tried all Laguna Burger locations, I was excited to give them a try! Ordered the Big Bad Bacon Cheddar burger meal and was disappointed in the whole experience! From the long wait times, uncomfortable crammed space, quality of food, and pricing. I would not and could not recommend! Review based on the following: 1. Front menus were difficult to read 2. Self serve drink station was in an inconvenient location in front of line(felt rushed) 3. Long wait time for food 4. Burger was overcooked, dry, and tasteless. Fries barely undercooked and had starchy taste. 5. Pricing high for such low quality food. Would not recommend at this time.

Yelp
I love Laguna Burger, and I took a good friend who had never been. She (and I) loved it! The restaurant is very clean, has nice industrial chic style, lots of seating (indoor and outdoor on a beautiful patio). The service is friendly, fast, and efficient. You place your order as you enter, pay, and they give you a number. Servers deliver your drinks and food as they are ready. Laguna is known for its burgers, but it also has sandwiches, soup, and salads. We chose the Laguna burger, a really filling, tasty green chile cheeseburger with a side of onion petals. We chose the petals vs fries with no charge for substitution. For drinks, my friend chose an Oreo shake and I chose a vodka tonic. Another plus for Laguna is it has a full bar. They offer a peanut butter shake made with Screwball, but I knew the burger would already be too much for me. Everything was terrific and made with very fresh ingredients. Another plus for Laguna is that it offers different size burgers. My friend chose the Laguna (.5 pound burger), and I chose the Laguna wimpy (.33 pound burger). We ate on the beautiful, shaded patio, and enjoyed our lunch very much! Laguna also recently opened a branch in Rio Rancho, but we dined at the one on 12th street. Next time, I'll venture to the new location to check it out.

Yelp
Five stars because the burgers are amazing but also the staff is pretty great too! My 6 year old dropped his burger on the floor halfway through our meal today at lunch. He was so upset and crying. The staff saw what happened and made him a brand new burger! Here's a pic of him with his replacement burger.

Marcos G.

Yelp
My food was not cooked fully as in red center and after I sent it back it came back with green chile scraped off and I sent it back again then they called me to the front the told me they were just going to refund my money because we obviously can't cook your food to your standards . So if you want your burger cooked all the way or without something you're allergic don't eat there.
google avatar

Jim H.

Yelp
Great burgers that can easily be cut in half to share. Crispy fries make the meal complete. We had the Bad Ass Bacon Burger, enough for 2. The service was great, nice people doing a good job, even when slammed with customers. Both indoor and covered outdoor seating. I would highly recommend Laguna Burger for lunch or dinner.

Richard N.

Yelp
Went to the 12th Street location and wound up paying $46 for two burgers, one order of fries a side salad and one drink (not counting the tip). Then they wanted to charge me 75 cents to grill the onions on the burger. The burger was just okay. Nothing special. No soap in the men's restroom, which means employees weren't adequately washing their hands, either. Both 12th Street and Rio Rancho locations are disappointing. Laguna Burger is not good value for the money and they won't be getting any more of mine.

Yelp
So, I have some friends from out of town who will be visiting me in NM. Clearly, just like many people, they haven't been to NM either and are kind of wondering how in the world I ended up here. So, part of the deal is, I gotta find something to entertain and inform them about NM. So, what a better way to introduce them to Green Chili Cheeseburger at one of the places where many people recommend: Laguna burger! I hadn't really eaten burger so often lately. But tasked with this job of introducing fine NM culinary to out of town visitors, I was kind of obligated to pre-try e.g. QA the burgers first based on what I had heard. I'm glad I did because I never tried Laguna burgers myself! Overall though, even though I got the smaller version of their "world famous" Laguna burger (e.g. green chili cheese burger) called Laguna wimp (hmm...I couldn't help but think they meant for smaller burgers to be for wimpy people like me!..but I digressed), I thought the burger was just ok. It tasted fresh (meat, veggies), but I didn't think of anything extraordinary about it. If anything, there wasn't so much green chili on it that it sort of tasted like a cheeseburger to me. Overall, I'm glad I tried Laguna Burger..but I think I'm still on a quest to find other places in NM where I feel like their green chili cheese burgers shine better!
google avatar

Michael R.

Yelp
The burgers are very good! The service is mid. The ambiance is ok. Concrete floors make the sound bounce around too much. Tried calling in an order but they kept sending me to voicemail. Had to walk in, order and wait 15 minutes. Let them know that I tried calling and the kid behind the register basically just shrugged his shoulders and asked for my order. Overall, I do recommend. Unfortunately, we're all just kind of used to bad service these days.

Yelp
"Laguna Burger" is a well-known burger that got its name from selling burgers on the Laguna Pueblo, just off I-40, outside Albuquerque. I've eaten at that location many times, and the food is always top notch. However, you should avoid this particular location! The quality of the food preparation at this location is very, very poor. I'm sure they use the same ingredients at all their locations, but they don't prepare their food as well here, probably because this a new location, and they don't have the same seasoned employees. Moreover, the service at this location is terrible. At my last visit, they made my food wrong. When they corrected the mistake, they gave me an old burger. I got a refund. Point is, avoid this location. Visit their original location on the Laguna Pueblo, just outside Albuquerque.

Yelp
Excellent and iconic green chili cheeseburger! And it turns out they have a group happy hour every day from 4 to 6 PM. We came h

Yelp
Delicious! we ordered two Laguna Burgers w a side of fries each and omg talk about perfect, just like their website claims. Every bite was better than the first. You will need more than two napkins the juiciness throughout calls for it. I liked their fries as well reminded me of my fav In-N-Out fries IYKYk. Customer service was ok and there was plenty of seating when we visited.
google avatar

Katherine P.

Yelp
The food is soo good! I typically get a whip as the regular size is too much for me. The onion petals and pulled pork fries are my absolute favorite. However you can't go wrong with a good ol' laguna burger. This place can get busy, so patience is key.
google avatar

Susan C.

Yelp
My green chile burger tasted great. The shake, not so much. Service was minimal. Restaurant wasn't a lot dirty, but not so clean either. But it was within walking distance from the hotel in W Albuquerque.
google avatar

Janice K.

Yelp
Get the Laguna burger! It was delicious. The staff was courteous. The manager needs to be put into charm school. He yelled at his people in front of the customers making it a very uncomfortable ambience.
google avatar

Karla S.

Yelp
The burgers are good, however if the owners can't pay a decent wage it seems that the customer has to make up the difference? With a tip? I ordered my food to go. When I worked at a burger joint we didn't expect a tip, nowadays a $14 dollar burger seems to have the tip worked into the cost

Shelly H.

Yelp
We waited 10 minutes to order our food. Then we sat another 20 minutes waiting for food and my husband had to point out our order was ready and had to take it from the counter. Then they got my daughter's order wrong. We won't be back any time soon!

Alyce H.

Yelp
We made a special stop in Albuquerque to go to Laguna Burger on our way to Arizona. We stopped there last year and had the best sandwich we've ever had. Always think about it and since we were going by and it is not that far from the highway we made a plan to stop for lunch. Did not disappoint. It was just as delicious as last year. It is the salmon sandwich with bacon, lettuce and tomato with aioli sauce on a grilled cheddar bread. Absolutely fabulous. Might plan to stop on our way back to Illinois in March if it works out. The staff is very friendly and helpful.

Yelp
Laguna Burgers are hands down some of the best burgers around. I am a bit of a burger snob so when I find a good burger place I am thrilled to share. My husband like the Laguna Wimp and I like a burger called Fuego Wimp. Both are very good but the Fuego is a little more spicy and just has more flavor all around. It also has onion petals in it which add a bit of fried crunch. The fries remind me of In and Out; the oil they use is sunflower I think? Not sure exactly but add a little salt and they are good. I have had their hot dogs and I would say they are decent. The Frito pie dog was meh. I wouldn't order it again but the Pancho Dog Perfection!! It is mostly self service. You order when you walk in and they bring food to your table. They also have a full bar there. Very cute place with even better food. Highly recommend.

Lee Ann G.

Yelp
Very disappointed in the lack of customer service I received a few days ago. I have tried reaching out to management and my first attempt, crystal hung up on me. They would not answer the phone. Called the RR location, spoke to mgt who was to have the manager Emily call me. It's been days and have yet to hear from her. I've emailed and sent a request via the website and still no response. We won't go to any of their establishments anytime soon. Trying to support local and treated rudely does not entice me to do so. I know of other hamburger restaurants locally that I'd be happy to order over and over and give local support

Jonathan C.

Yelp
Was in line tonight at 6:30 PM and it was a long line-up. Took about 20 minutes to order. When I reached the cash register to order, They said it would be 30 minutes to get a burger to go. With such a long lineup and then having to wait another 30 minutes for take out, they really should be letting patrons know that. I understand that they may be understaffed, but that's definitely going to alter most people's plans. When I told the people in line that the wait was at least 30 minutes for burgers once they ordered, several people left the line so it does change people's decision making.

John T.

Yelp
Order at the counter and pick up your food when called ... if they call you. Waited 20 minutes for an undercooked burger (cold center) then another 25 to get it right. Very grumpy staff. Chile underwhelming and kind of mealy, like old and defrosted quickly. Burger not bad, condiments fresh with the exception of the chile. Barmaid very friendly and a decent pour. Not my first try but decided worth writing a review.

Ellie G.

Yelp
Ordered pork fries and a white tea shot. Took 15 minutes for them to have no queso and my drink was straight sprite.

Yelp
Always delicious at the Pit watching basketball or PBR. Bit pricey but very good!!!!!

Yelp
This is a good restaurant with lots of sandwich and salad options. Although the restaurant title is burger, I had an excellent hot dog. There are four kinds of hotdogs and I had the classic and it was great. The french fries were good, too, but it was hard for me to figure out why they were worth the high price. They're pretty expensive. The ambiance in this restaurant is just fine. There were three TV sits over the bar and that was nice because I was dining alone. There is also a nice big patio and several people were out there. Would I come here again? Absolutely!

Liz L.

Yelp
Rude woman behind the counter. Meh burger. Loud scraping metal chairs on concrete floor. Not impressed. Won't return. And soggy fries.
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
I was told this was the place to grab a burger and a beer. Walked, ordered my food and sat at the bar. Finished my food and was never offered anything to drink after multiple staff walked by me. Not a word was said after my food was dropped off. TERRIBLE customer service. Even now, staff has walked passed me and not taken any of my plates/napkins away. Don't know why I'm being ignored here, I walked in, smiled, politely ordered my food and tipped and yet, nothing, from anyone. It's quite sad as the burger and fries were pretty good, easily a 4 star but to treat your customers like this is just awful. Needless to say, I won't be back, regardless of how good the food was. UPDATE it is now 3:22 and a couple is having drinks and being served right where I was sitting. Still don't know what I did wrong. Hate to say it was the color of my skin but that seems to be the only common denominator.

Yelp
We ate here because 66 Acres wasn't open yet and I don't think I've ever seen the husband so excited about a place to eat in quite some time. It's a burger place so I don't think I'd go here expecting high levels of service, but the sandwiches were fresh (I had the mushroom Swiss burger and the husband had the pulled pork) and didn't have the chain taste (fresh ingredients, freshly made). The fries had the In and Out look/taste so I assume they were freshly made as well. And... this is a small thing, but the sodas had the right mix of syrup and carbonation. It just had all of the hallmarks of a good meal with nothing fancy but every element was well done. The service basically consisted of bringing the food out to your table so not sure where the comments of lousy service are coming from. The service we got on this visit was prompt and to the point. We will be back! Perfect burger joint. Next time I'm trying the "lit" shakes!

Yelp
My friend and I embarked on a green chile cheeseburger tour this past week. Our mission was to find the best green chile cheeseburger in the great state of New Mexico. We went to 11 different places and here are the results. Laguna Burger ranked #10 out of 11. This place was right next to our hotel, so we decided to check it out. We went with a Laguna Burger. Here is how it was............ Laguna Burger- This is their green chile cheeseburger. It was your typical burger. Meat, lettuce, onion, tomato, pickle, green chiles, cheese. The burger itself was a bit dry/overcooked. Nothing really stood out about it. Just an average green chile cheeseburger. Overall, it was ok. Not bad by any means, but I wouldn't seek it out, either. A-OK is what it is.

Yelp
Walked over for lunch from the office. I was glad they take Apple Pay. Seems they are getting with the times. So on to the food, it is great food here. The burgers are made perfectly with lots of toppings, wish the green chili was hotter but is was good. The fries are cooked to perfection, I was impressed

Yelp
It is pretty good except there were no tables available because the place was packed.

Alexis G.

Yelp
Burger was pretty tasty I guess, but the fries were not. They were stale, bordering on cold and also in tiny pieces, so basically what had accumulated at the bottom of the warmer all day. I don't understand how anyone can mess up frozen, precut potatoes that you dump into a fryer for 3-4 minutes. That being said, there are much better options out there for $15.
