10 Hot Spots for Thai Food in Metro Detroit

"This gem of a dinner spot opened in early 2020 with friendly, top-notch service that was a bright spot. The entrees are flavorful and fresh, with “medium” spice even providing a little kick without the MSG. Curry here is a standout and a big hit with customers. There’s a kids’ menu for the little ones." - Monica Williams

I cannot say enough amazing things about Lai Thai! From the moment you step through the door, you’re welcomed with warm smiles and a serene atmosphere that instantly sets the tone for an exceptional dining experience. The food is absolutely incredible – every dish is thoughtfully prepared with fresh, high-quality ingredients, bursting with authentic Thai flavors. Their Pad Thai is hands down the best I’ve ever had – perfectly balanced with the right amount of tanginess and sweetness. The green curry is a must-try, with its rich, velvety texture and just the right level of spice. What truly sets Lai Thai apart is their attention to detail and impeccable service. The staff is attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about ensuring every guest has an outstanding experience. They are more than happy to make recommendations, accommodate dietary preferences, or customize spice levels to suit your taste. The ambiance is cozy yet elegant, making it perfect for a date night, family dinner, or even a solo outing if you’re craving comfort food. The restaurant is always clean and beautifully decorated, with little touches that enhance the authenticity of the experience. I’ve dined here multiple times, and every single visit has been consistently excellent. If you’re looking for delicious, authentic Thai food with exceptional service, Lai Thai is the place to go. I highly recommend it to anyone – you won’t be disappointed!

Google
Decent Thai joint. Not the most authentic nor the tastiest I’ve had. For the chef specials, it’s very hit or miss. I got the garlic chicken chef special and it was just ok, nothing special. The portion size could be a little larger. The price is pretty average compared to all other Thai restaurants around.

Google
Hands down the best Thai food I’ve ever had outside of Thailand! Great food and amazing service.

Google
From the moment we walked in at 5 PM, the place was non-stop busy with take out orders. We got our apps and food surprisingly fast for the volume they were doing. Would have been with an even longer wait because this is the optimal affordability : quality ratio in the area. Best crab rangoon and the pineapple cream cheese wontons were phenomenal. Great flavor and heat to the noodle dishes as well.

Google
Great quality but be careful if you order the pad see yu- it has no sauce! I love pad see yu and have been to many Thai restaurants and have never once had it without the noodle clinging sauce that makes the dish a classic. When I told them they said that it’s always served dry! What?!- an authentic Thai food place with dry noodles? I won’t be ordering that dish again here. Lovely place though and my family liked what they had.

Google
Delicious as always. Had coconut ice cream. Absolutely wonderful. They did say it is homemade and not available all the time. So glad we hit the right day.

Google
Everything tasted fantastic and very much like what I expect for traditional Thai food (we lived for months in Thailand). It was very well presented and the portion are nice. The place is very simple and cute, it feels like Thailand to be fair with the portrait of the royal family. The staff is Thai - from Bangkok - and they are so kind and gentle. Because the level of spice is different for everyone in my family, they gave us a jar of spice to accommodate everyone to their liking - and that made a difference as I like it very hot. Last but not least, we had plenty of food and we were five ... It cost us $62. This is a bargain. Probably the best Thai food in Michigan at that price point and quality.

Google
I think Lan Thai is the one of the best Thai food in Canton area. Great quality of Thai cousins and price are very reasonable. Friendly staff and very quick service. The restaurant is very clean and nice atmosphere. I would recommend people who loves Thai food.

Yelp
First time visiting. I got Tom Yum Gai Soup, Kow Ladna Gai and a Thai Iced Coffee. I went here specifically because of the Kow Ladna. This dish is hard to find in this specific preparation. Very good soup, entree and a great Thai iced coffee. I would go there just for the Thai iced coffee; it was really good.

Yelp
Very tasty Thai food. Many items are on the menu, some very unique. Portions are good. Service is very friendly. Its like one family owned restaurant. Spice levels can be adjusted. Curry puffs are like a little diff version of Indian Samosas. Fish curry is good. Soups are amazing Good food with great service

Yelp
This is the cutest little restaurant. We were greeted immediately and were allowed to sit anywhere. The serving sizes were heaping and the prices were unbeatable. The food exceeded my expectations and the spice level was spot on. I was thrilled with my meal and will certainly return here.

Yelp
I've gotten takeout here a few times and food is always delicious! The people that run the restaurant are very nice as well. I've only ever done takeout here but would love to dine in person sometime soon.

Yelp
Ordered takeout from here while hanging out at my mom's in Canton for the evening. The menu is quite through with a ton of options from standard Thai dishes like Pad Thai, Tom Yum soup, curries, fried rice, noodles and more. They also have my favorite, Kao Soi on the menu ("noodles with meat or tofu in Lai Thai curry, coconut milk, and topped with red onions and crispy noodles"). However, I actually skipped trying that this time since it was a very warm evening and a brothier dish didn't quite sound like it would hit the spot. In the end I ordered the yellow curry with chicken, which I felt was kind of a combo of the Kao Soi flavors that I love (coconut, currey, etc) while being a bit more of a traditional rice dish. I was right and it was very good. Unfortunately I can't really handle spice anymore (as soon as I hit 40 years young, my stomach decided to go all in on heartburn in the middle of the night) so I was glad they had varying spice levels to choose from. For the sake of a good night's sleep I went with no spice and I nary a bit of heat was to be found and it was still quite flavorful in its own way. My mom and I also split an order of the vegetarian curry puffs and the mango sticky rice. Both were fantastic (though I'm not sure the sticky rice held up quite as well for carryout as the rice got a little gummy. I definitely would love to try it in house sometime). That part of Ford Road can get pretty congested but luckily they're located in a strip mall complex that does have some dedicated traffic lights so getting in and out isn't a total pain. Would definitely enjoy another meal here again.

Yelp
Always enjoy their Pad Thai. It's one of the best on the west side of metro Detroit. I haven't experimented with other menu items. Just keep going back for the Pad Thai.

Yelp
Food, service, ambience and friendliness of staff was superb. Will definitely go back.

Yelp
I highly recommend the Crispy Pineapple Chicken, it has onions, green pepper, carrots, pineapple, and a very thinly breaded fried cubed chicken with an amazing pineapple sauce. I get mine mild heat but you can up the heat as well. It is my new favorite meal at Lai Thai. I used to just eat the sweet and sour chicken which is also very good but I love Pineapple!

Yelp
I got two dishes here take-out with someone else. It was very delicious and reasonably priced food. Good owners. FWIW I didnt dine in but i placed orders and picked up at the counter. The restaurant itself was small, full at "rush hour" 6pm, and very cozy friendly and good vibrations. I would recommend friends and small groups eat here-- its beautifully decorated

Yelp
Very yummy food, for a reasonable price! We love the smiley faces on the crab Rangoon!

Yelp
The food is always good. I've tried the spring rolls, chicken curry, fried rice and cucumber salad. I've been going here for years!

Yelp
Been searching for a new favorite Thai place after my go to place closed several years ago. Finally found it with Lai Thai! The food is what I've been looking for and the cost is reasonable too. In the last month I've done both dine in and carryout.

Yelp
Whether you opt for dine-in or take out, you'll be happy if you order from Lai Thai. I'm assuming the gentleman who is always working is the owner, and he couldn't be nicer. We've been coming here for about 20 years and the food is excellent every time. You can't go wrong with any of the fried rice options. My daughter enjoys their pad Thai, though she orders it with no bean sprouts or peanuts (and I'll never understand the no peanut thing!). We've had several of their curry dishes and all are good. My husband basically drinks the curry sauce, treating it more like soup because it's phenomenal. Panang might be our favorite. I still can't recommend the yum apple dish enough. I see that I mentioned Ramada Noodle in my previous review and I haven't had that in a while, so that's on my list for next time. Their appetizers are also scrumdiddlyumptious. Plus you'll get service with a smile, and you'll notice the regulars who the owner always acknowledges appreciatively. Maybe you'll be the next regular. Enjoy!

Yelp
Best Curry Fish dish anywhere. I've been coming here for years. Friendly service alwats

Yelp
Always great!! Love their spring rolls and everything I've tried over the years! It is definitely my favorite for Thai food.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place. Basil Fried Rice and Pad Ped are personal favorites; SO delicious. Great portion sizes for the price. Love the environment, and the owners are great; very friendly and customer first. This is one of my go-to's when I need to order some takeout or take my friends for food when they come to visit!
google avatar

Minu A.

Yelp
I came here when they were less than an hour from close and I was still greeted extremely politely and the owner was so nice. And the food was actually so good I got the tom kha and the fried rice. And they are very generous with the prices compared to the thai food I've had to around the area. The inside of this restaurant was clean and was decorated nicely. This place is a gem.
google avatar

Yelp
We went here to eat dinner. Unplanned, but knew that we wanted Thai food. We walked in and were nicely greeted and seated right away. The restaurant was very clean and so nicely decorated. We ordered after looking over the menu for a few minutes. We ordered a few small plates and one main dish to share. Everything that we chose was SO good. The flavors were authentic and just perfect on the spice level that we chose. I like to try the Tom Ka Gai everywhere I go and theirs was outstanding! 10/10 we will be back!

Yelp
Best Thai food I have ever eaten! Would not think of going elsewhere. Only wish they would reopen indoor dining, please!

Yelp
Probably the best Thai food I've had in a long time. We go every chance we get. Service is great. They remember our orders and hook us up each time. Space is nice and booths have tons of room.

Cindy G.

Yelp
We hadn't ordered from here in a while simply because we moved out of Canton. We have tried other Thai restaurants in our area and nothing compares. We were in the area today and ordered carry out. Nothing has changed! This is still the best Thai restaurant!! The spring rolls are crisp and fresh and not soggy on the inside. Delicious! Everything they serve is fresh, flavorful and scrumptious. Even carry out that we drove 30 minutes home with was still piping hot and fresh! Excellent customer service as well! They treat their customers like family and friends. Keep doing what you've been doing for years! We appreciate you and love your food.!!

Chalyn E.

Yelp
Their food is incredible!! Best thai food in Canton! Their pad Thai is amazing and they have the most inviting staff, highly recommend!
google avatar

Joy D.

Yelp
This is one of the BEST tasting Thai food we've had in a very long time. This is a family-owned business that has been in the area for 26 years! The service was impeccable! We walked in after 3 hours of driving and was greeted immediately. They owner's brother was fantastic and warm, while the waitress (I presume also family) was kind, patient, and friendly. We're fans of this small business and give them a 5 out of 5 stars!!!!

Kim H.

Yelp
Tried for the first time and will definitely be back! Spring rolls and shrimp rolls are delicious with a very tasty plum sauce. Chicken satay seasoned nicely with delicious peanut sauce. Pad Thai very good. Red curry was very delicious too. All of veggies were super crisp. Spice level on point. Recommend to a friend!

Ryan L.

Yelp
The best Thai food you will get in Detroit. The family who owns it is friendly and accommodating. I'll be back soon!

Yelp
I always passed by this place and took note of it, but never got a chance to actually try it out, until yesterday! Treating an out of town visitor and he wanted Thai food and he was in the Canton area, so we came here. I ordered the Green Curry with Tofu (big surprise) and my friend ordered the Rama Noodle. We both tried each other's food and it was legit Thai food, it was very appealing, flavorful and great! The dinner portion was okay, but I was hoping it would be more quantity for the price, but the size was decent. I was able to take a little home to the family, but wished there was more. The service from the gentleman who served us was nice, he was friendly and accommodating when I asked for more rice. My wife and children upon trying my leftovers were also delighted with the taste, flavor and quality of the food. Just wish there was a little more quantity and hands down it would be a 5-star rating for me.

Yelp
Started with a delicious soup that thicker than the typical Thai offering. Loved it. Then I decided on Spirit Noodles and I am so glad I did. There was bamboo shoots, broccoli, green peppers and carrots in rice noodles and a spicy brown gravy. I questioned if shrimp served with tails on or off and the waitress, who seemed to be the proprietor, laughed and said we want food to taste delicious, not look pretty. No tails l s on my shrimp. So good. I will be back!

Yelp
This Thai restaurant used to be my favourite restaurant when I lived in the area. Whenever we venture out into the Canton area we try to have a meal at this restaurant. Today, the restaurant was quite busy and we were not even greeted when we walked in. Because we were not greeted, we walked in and grabbed a seat. The restaurant was busy, so we waited and the owner grabbed the menus from the ladies sitting behind us saying that they had no more menus and she needed it. I believe that they had already placed their orders, but I thought it was a rude way to get menus to us. The first thing I want to say is that we heard that people in another table beside us had ordered spring rolls and we decided we wanted to have spring rolls as well. When we were placing the order we were told that they had no more spring more rolls. I thought this was still odd, because we were there with the restaurant had just opened for lunch on Saturday. It was around 1130. I believe the restaurant opens for lunch at 11 AM. The food at the restaurant is good. I always order FR6 hot and add vegetables and tofu. ( Pineapple fried rice). The flavours are very good at this restaurant. However, today, I felt that the hot was more of a mild and I still used additional hot sauce (requested on the side). My husband ordered C6, which is chicken pad ped. He ordered it hot. He thought the dish was very flavourful but he thought it too could use more spice. He says that the spice level was more of a "solid medium". Overall, we enjoyed the meal and the décor of the restaurant is very nice but I felt that everything was very rushed because the restaurant was quite busy. One of the benefits of going for lunch and we got a vegetable soup. Today, because the weather was cooler, it was nice to get the soup with the meal. We probably will end up going back when we are in the area again, hopefully next time with some better service and more flavours that we have experienced in the past.

Yelp
Got some Pad Thai and Pad See Ew to try this place out and I was pleasantly surprised how great the food was at this little place. It could have been more flavorful, but both dishes were quite nice. And the portions were pretty big, which matters to me because I like to make take-out meals like this two meals when possible. I'm looking forward to trying something else next time to see if the quality holds up!
google avatar

Abigail D.

Yelp
They were very friendly on the phone. Great prices. Crab Rangoon was SO GOOD, chicken pad Thai was good (not the best I've ever had, but definitely good enough to get again). Pick up took a little while, not because anyone was too slow but because the phone range for quite a few minutes before it was answered. I'm sure that is just because call volume is very high considering the pandemic.
google avatar

Samantha W.

Yelp
Great Thai food! Our party of four ordered takeout and it was ready on time, hot, and delivered to our vehicle with a cheerful smile! I'm so grateful for the way Lai Thai is making it work during this difficult season. I had the Panang Curry with chicken and it was perfect level of spice, the veggie and chicken were evenly portioned in the entree. I'll be back!

Debra D.

Yelp
Love this place go every week Would love to try more things one day I will thanks for being consistent
google avatar

Ellie K.

Yelp
You can't get a better deal on Thai food than this place. Though the portions are a bit small and the food isn't out of this world, the price makes up for it all. My friend and I got the Pad Gra Paw (basil chicken) and the Spirit Noodle but we both agreed that we would recommend the Pad Gra Paw.
google avatar

Jameson J.

Yelp
The food here is great, and I have really enjoyed eating many of their dishes over the last couple of months. The pad thai (N2) is my favorite and they can make it any way you choose. I usually order with veggies but I have also had the seafood version as well. The spice level choices are no spice, low, medium,medium-hot, and hot. I usually have medium but have tried the medium-hot and I can say it's not the hottest but definitely has some heat. The pad thai sauce is sweet and has a tangy flavor that makes it unique from other pad thai. For appetizers, there is also the or tofu tod (A2). The tofu tod is not impressive by itself but the dipping sauce that accompanies it is absolutely great, it's sweet and tangy, (pour some on your Pad thai or fried rice). This is the first Thai restaurant that I know if that will make your food with low salt or no salt, which is helpful for us watching our sodium intake. So however you would like your food prepared to let them know and they will work with you. While I must say I am impressed with the food at this location I am even more impressed with their response to the pandemic. The only option is curbside pickup or delivery and it has been this way since the early part of 2020. I appreciate the convenience and especially the food. This location has made a new customer.

Yelp
I'm sitting here waiting for my change from my bill. I enjoyed a really nice red curry coconut chicken dish with lots of vegetables and white rice. The staff was friendly courteous and prompt. Food tasted delicious. Will definitely come back again.

Nicole M.

Yelp
We love Lai Thai. When my sister comes from out of town this is the first place we go, and often more than once during her stay. Everyone that works there has been very kind and patient. They really go above and beyond if you happen to dine in and I've never had any issues with carry out. Which is not that common these days. The vegetarian curry puffs are so good and I prefer them over any spring roll. They have the best tom yum! Everything I've tried has been great and they don't skimp on the portions.
google avatar

Angela W.

Yelp
We ate here tonight for the first time and it will NOT be our last. Everything ordered was delicious!! Pad Thai, F7 Fried Rice, Spring Rolls and this Pineapple Cream Cheese appetizer that I could have eaten all night. The prices are reasonable and the food is incredible. We will be back and are making this one of our top take out places. Since writing my initial review we have eaten here just about once a week. It's impacting my waistline in a bad way but my taste buds in a good way. I love this place!

Yelp
Went 25mins before... no greetings and a woman rudely says, "Carry out only". My wife was craving for Thai food and we would have taken carry out but just because of the rude lady we quickly stepped out. Never going back... Update: Went for lunch today to give another try. Same rude lady... very bad behavior for a business. Prices were average but food was below average. The one thai restaurant on cherry hill is way better..
google avatar

Angel V.

Yelp
OMG what an adorable little spot! My server was fun and super nice. She brought me some Pad Thai that tasted like spring time! So good! So good in fact, I ordered three more things to take home for dinner!
google avatar

Caroline G.

Yelp
This place used to be very good. But over the years they have really gotten very sloppy. And the very last time that I ate there...... I got very sick and wound up going to the ER. It turns out that I got food poisoning. And when I called the restaurant and spoke to the owner about what happened he casually brushed it off like it was nothing. Well needless to say I never went there again. And I told my friends what happened. I thought that this restaurant was good but after what happened to me and how the owner blew it off as if it was nothing. They will never ever never get my patronage again!!!!!!!!! SHAME ON LA THAI!!!!! SHAME!!!!!! SHAME!!!!!!!
google avatar

Liz W.

Yelp
Cheaper and better than the more sung about Thai place down the road. It is an especially good steal for lunch. The food here is cooked as you like it. Extra cilantro, no worries. Extra garlic, great. Extra hot, ummmm you might wanna rethink. Portions are big. Service is good and friendly. I have tried a variety of items over the years and have never been disappointed. Food is never greasy or heavy. I really like anything with the perfect fried tofu. The spirit and river noodles are good. I like the green curry, pad khing, pad gra praw and the sriracha fried rice. Spring rolls are crisp, I like the curry puffs and satay is nice. In the summer the yum apple salad is so refreshing. I especially love the desserts in here, tiny little baked ramekins of custard and coconut ice cream yum.

Yelp
I have many fond memories of Lai Thai, as it was one of the first Thai restaurants I had ever tried. I'm happy to report the food is every bit as authentic and consistent as those early visits were more than 10 years ago. As I mentioned above, I've been coming to Lai Thai for more than a decade. I started meeting my mother here for lunch during summers off from school and often stopped in to pick up their Tom Yum soup when I had a craving for the spicy, lemony soup (I only get it with the fried tofu!). Everything here is consistent, is reasonably authentic and has been family run and owned as long as I've been going there. My favorites are the Pad Prik, the Tom Yum, the Yellow Curry with Shrimp and their Potato Curry Puffs. You are always provided a soup of the day during lunch hours and dinner prices are very reasonable. The family that owns it is absurdly friendly, and if you're in more than once, they'll no doubt remember you and strike up a conversation. They never fail to ask me how my mom is doing and warn me that I always ask for too much spice in my food. It's very small, is always crowded during lunch (usually with the Japanese, Indian and Arabic businessmen from around the area who know and seek out the authentic spices and ingredients Lai Thai is known for), so bring your patience. Food is always out quick. They're great with substitutions, a reminder that it's made fresh. Great prices, incredibly consistent and locally owned and operated are the recipe for success here. If you're out Ikea way, keep driving past it down Ford Rd. past the big box chain restaurants and make a Right into the strip mall where you'll see Murray's Discount Auto and McDonalds. Nestled between Murray's and a Middle Eastern Restaurant, you'll find a little slice of Canton Thai heaven.
google avatar

Angela W.

Yelp
Usually good, it seems like I've been getting a bit of attitude lately, and I don't know why. I walked in and sat in a booth. After 10 minutes of waiting, the owner asks if she can help me. "Um, if like to order? Am I sitting in the wrong spot?" 'No, you sit where you like' she responded. I ordered and she immediately brought the spring roll over. A few minutes later, my red chicken curry arrived. It's a lot more bland than the previous times that I've ordered it. It tasted like the chicken was just tossed in a minute before serving, and no flavors really blended together. She doesn't speak to me. I hear her jokingly talk with the other customers at the table, just never says a word to me. Even when she just brought over my bill, she didn't say a word. I had to ask for a box, though she just asked the only other table if they needed one. Anyway.. Normally I'd call this place my second favorite Thai place to eat (second to my mom's Thai cooking) but the more I come here, the less impressed I am. She at least said thank you and goodbye after leaving her a 40% tip.

Yelp
Husband and I were looking for a new Thai place and I think we found it! This restaurant has been in canton for over 20 years and they deserve it because the food amazing! I will definitely be back!

Yelp
My search continues for good Thai food in Southeast Michigan. I love Thai Thai in Ypsilanti, but their limited hours always impedes my access to great Pad Thai and curry. I found the food at Lai Thai to be wanting. The Pad Thai was not very good, it was okay, but almost tasted fast-food-ish, such as the kind you get from "No Thai" (which I consider "Not Thai"). Coconut soup tasted less tart than I'm used to, almost chicken brothy and mild; it was good, just different. Due to their cheap lunch prices, I would definitely return if I'm doing a round of shopping in Canton, but would not seek this place out for Thai cravings.
