"The Lake Chabot Public Market in Castro Valley was devastated by a fire early Thursday morning. The Chronicle reports Alameda County Fire Department officials say the building — home to numerous restaurants, a cafe, and vendors — is “most likely a total loss.”" - Paolo Bicchieri

We stopped here and had a lunch on our way to Anthony Chabot Park. A great place for a quick lunch. They have choice of poke bowl, ramen, milk tea and bibimaba(Korea style). Better than fast food.

Google
Great concept. Love the Market Hall idea with multiple restaurants in one common space. Not a huge variety of options, but still good. Ate at Shumi Ramen, we got Vegetarian Ramen, fried purple sweet potatoes and agedashi tofu. All pretty good, but not amazing. Started with Devout coffee from the little shop out front which is open earlier than the Market opens. Devout Coffee is always a win, today was no different. Tried a couple new drinks: Eggnog latte and Espresso tonic - both interesting and tasty!

Google
Pokeatery, my fav poke place with generous servings! No added new eating place but they added outside seating with cool relaxing music. A pleasant venue on a cool or breezy day.

Google
Have wanted to visit for awhile and everyone tells me parking is difficult so I went about 3pm figuring out was between lunch and dinner crowds and I was able to park just fine. So many options but wanted to try Milk & Cookies today. Will definitely return to try T4 and ramen They have 4 large tables set up for eating inside and tables with umbrellas outside

Google
Eatery that has multiple restaurants, ice cream place and boba shop all inside this public market. Food is good but pricy like everything currently.

Jose Villanueva

Google
Great Asian-related food and a calm but lively atmosphere. Only thing I recommend is refinishing or replacing the eating tables they were clean but extremely sticky which makes them feel not clean.

Google
Great food selections at reasonable price!

Google
Small Asian market, with mediocre food. Japanese curry was thin, not especially well cooked, and all served in ugly takeout containers. Very few vegan options for entrees, kind of overpriced. It’s a little bit noisy inside because of the acoustics. It works in a pinch but I would never plan to go here for the food, and have no intention of going back.

Yelp
Oh no. Big big big fire. All businesses have a total loss and are closed. We hope they will rebuild. Condolences to the owners and employees !!

Yelp
OKay clearly this place was NOT ready to open for business! We got there early and we were standing in line for at least 30 minutes. They were out of a lot of things listed on the menu. While I was waiting for my order to be prepared I saw that they had to use the kitchen down the hall. I noticed that there was nowhere to sit if you wanted to sit and eat. I got my food and went downstairs to eat what I ordered and the first thing I noticed was The food was COLD, The food was BLAND, and the Chicharon was very DRY. The RICE was very GUMMY and was flavorless. I don't think they were ready to serve people because I saw a lot of people are interested but I also saw those same people leaving before ordering. I must admit that I feel I wasted my money because there is a lot more wrong than right.

Arnold L.

Yelp
This is a cool market that is like a food court and grocery store together. Some of the restaurants were closed when I visited on a weekday which was unfortunate. The Grocery side had a lot of interesting items and I picked up some Ramen meals to taken home with me. I got hungry and I ordered some Fried Chicken Wings and Garlic fries. I was able to take my meal outside and enjoy the outdoor seating which was great. The Chicken wings were really good. Crispy and flavorful. The fries were delicious too. I liked that they gave a side of rice and some daikon with the meal. I'll come back again to try the other restaurants.

Rick G.

Yelp
This location caught on fire. I don't even know why it's still posted here. I guess the owner of the building is holding out some hope that someday they can rebuild. It's a train wreck.

Tim H.

Yelp
This business has ceased to operate due to a fire that destroyed the building. There are no plans to reopen at that location. A real loss to the community!

Dee W.

Yelp
I was really surprised when I walked in nice and small but surrounded by different places to eat .. the meat market was closed because I went on Monday but I wasn't disappointed at all.. my food was good my son loved the ice cream and the customer service was good and it was .. I am definitely dreaming and craving the Karaage chicken againnnn

LeeLee C.

Yelp
A small market with half split of prepared food and grocery on the other half. After entering the left side is poke, ice cream bar and ramen shop. In the middle are fridges for drinks and a tea shop T4, the right is raw meat counter. Sunday by 12 it's quite empty here and the middle seating area is plenty. I can imagine when it gets a bit crowded that seating might be tight. However this is somewhere I can find something to eat and be content about. Clean floor and well staffed.

Yelp
I've been coming here for years since they first opened when my best friend used to live in Castro Valley. Was always a great place to take my family since there was something for everyone. Our favorite was the bulgogi cheesesteak from Mama Cho's. My son loved the ramen spot and my daughter likes the boba tea. We all loved the ice cream as well. I was saddened to hear the news about the fire. My heart broke for all the business owners. I pray they will be able to rebuild and recover. If they have a Go Fund Me going, I'd be more than willing to donate in support of the Cho family and build back the community.

Yelp
Lake Chabot Public Market is a really cool spot that is different than your typical restaurant. This building houses a variety of independent shops making & selling tasty drinks and food. It felt like a mall food court, but with better food! There is ample parking making it easy to park and go. I really enjoyed the outdoor seating. It allowed us to grab lunch and sit outside very easily and quickly. I was in the mood for Poke so I grabbed a bowl from Pokeatery. The menu and instructions are easily laid out and it was fun picking out the various toppings that I wanted. The bowl was decently sized and filled me up. The employees were nice and efficient. Pricing was fair at about $15ish per bowl. Whether you're into Korean BBQ, Poke, Ramen or just want to grab some coffee and dessert, Lake Chabot Public Market has it all! I will definitely be back to try out the other offerings! P.S. There's a mobile coffee bar outside that seems to be only open until 2pm.

Rachel N.

Yelp
I loveee places like this that give you multiple options all in one -- it's kind of like a school cafeteria and a mall food court merged together, but WAYYY cleaner and cuter! They currently have six different shops set up with lots of varying food for you to try, and plenty of tables inside and out for you to grab a quick meal or hang for hours doing work. Can even buy alcoholic beverages and get a little tipsy with friends! Some of the tasty stuff you can find here is: Spicy pork burritos Sweet Potato tots Poke bowls Potato croquettes Black garlic ramen Calamari Popcorn chicken Egg puffs 50+ types of boba drinks Coffee Ice cream scoops and milkshakes Donut ice cream sandwiches And tonsss more! Parking can be a little tough as the lot is small and spaces tight, but there are extra spaces past the fence -- just don't bring your big trucks! I love visiting to mix and match up my meals with whoever I bring along, it's always a tasty and good time here!

Yelp
I'm here at 2:00 p.m. on a weekday because the reviews said that this location is dog friendly. Unfortunately that's not true. If you are traveling by yourself with a dog, you cannot bring them into the interior of the market, which pretty much defeats the purpose. Yes, they have seating outside so that you can sit with your dog, but if you can't go inside to order or purchase food then it's pretty pointless. I'm lucky enough to be traveling with another person, so I went in to take a look and hopefully get some food and drinks, then enjoy the outside. There are supposed to be five or six vendors inside, but the sweet treat vendor and ramen vendor are closed so that decreased my options by a third. I decided on some fried chicken and garlic fries and I also grabbed a few grocery options for later. I was told it would be a 15 minute wait for the hot food items, however, when I went outside, I realized that the patio area is no more functional for me than the inside of the business. I am not a thin person and I literally cannot fit in the chairs outside. They have stools inside with no arms so if you're larger and you don't have a dog you could sit inside at the small bar and eat but overall I did not find this location to be dog or fat friendly.

Ashley C.

Yelp
Wish more of these public markets existed. They're like food courts but way nicer and better food from local businesses! This one has a decent amount of seating inside and we had no trouble getting a table at lunchtime on a Sunday. Parking was free and easy to find as well. They have several food options, an ice cream place, boba, and a coffee truck out front, plus a little Korean grocery area. There is something for everyone!

Jim L.

Yelp
It is gone, burned inside by a fire jun 2024. Let see how fast the local red tape allows a good mom and pop place rebuild? I want that kalbi burrito so much.

Talia B.

Yelp
I never get the PM a review but I really hope they can recoup because it was a great space with several options. I only went for ice cream but I had wanted to eventually try some poke and the frozen items they had.

Gina O.

Yelp
Perfect spot for both indoor and outdoor seating! I like how they have a good range of food options from ramen, poke, Korean bbq bowls, and ice cream! I got the poke bowl and it was super filling and delicious! They had a variety of Japanese alcoholic beverages that were pretty cool too! But you'll have to drink it outside only Parking: has its own parking lot

Mandy C.

Yelp
We stopped by here after visiting the Oakland Zoo and it was great. Reminds me of a smaller Oxbow market in Napa. We had the chicken and bulgogi plate and 4 piece fried chicken - both were excellent, fresh, and good sized portions. The Mama Cho place seems the most popular with a very extensive menu ranging from burger and fries, burritos, nachos, to traditional plates. We also had the poke which was pretty decent. I liked how there is a T4 inside and Devout coffee outside. The T4 here makes food drinks and the egg puffs are great too. My husband enjoyed the Devout coffee. The inside was spacious with very high ceilings and good air circulation. There are wooden benches inside and outside. They also sell alcohol by can/bottle in their convenience store section and you can drink it in the alcohol zone. We wanted to try the ice cream stall but it doesn't open till 12:30pm. Will be back next trip to Oakland.

Yelp
Several venders offer a wide variety of cuisines and desserts. Poke your head in and try anything that sounds good.

Vera N.

Yelp
Miss going here, heard there was a fire that closed it down. Their poke here is bomb, fresh food and other ingredients that is decently priced! Kbbq is ok, the ice cream is amazing and ramen is good too!

Michele R.

Yelp
Nice assortment under one roof Today was checking out Milk & Cookies but well definitely return to try everything more another time

Catalina R.

Yelp
So yummy. Great place when everyone in the family has different cravings. Mama cho's was yummy. The Kalbi burrito was so amazing. Desert at Milk & Cookie was the best top off.

m l.

Yelp
Been here a few times since they open. I love the concept but it lacks diversity of businesses/cuisine.

Arlene J.

Yelp
I loved this place. It had lots of variety with not only good food but happy people. I'm sorry for the tragic fire.

Lee D.

Yelp
11/28/21 I look forward to making an updated review, as most of the businesses were closed this morning. Actually, most of the businesses are closed Sunday. I have been looking forward to eating at MaMa Cho's BBQ as I keep hearing positive things about this place. Quality/Quantity - N/A Atmosphere - Good, spacious, clean. Indoor and outdoor seating. Plenty of parking this morning. Businesses here: Mama Cho's BBQ C&H Meat Co. Milk & Cookie Bar Pokeatery T4 Shumi Ramen Devout Coffee Service - N/A Price - N/A Owner Suggestion - Most businesses should open and close at the same time, this will attract more customers. Similar to the "auto mall" theory.

Vineet S.

Yelp
College spent in LA gave me a taste for Korean food especially fusion Korean. KoJa kitchen does a great job of this. Walking into this clean and vibrant enclosure, I wandered the different sections until I came to the one on the far right on the entrance - the Korean spot. Wanted something light so I got the KFC - Korean fried chicken sandwich. It took about 15-20min to come out. It was lunchtime on Friday so NP. The review is solely for the sandwich It tasted mostly fresh, but left a bit desired: - Bun wasn't toasted - No cheese - No special Korean sauce of any kind - No kimchi? - Chicken was very lightly flavored, almost as if it wasn't trying Unsure if this was worth $12 Will try other things from their menu. Sandwich was mid.

Margret S.

Yelp
Unfortunately the building burned down earlier today. Sadly the Market is no more. I am sorry for all the vendors in this market place. I hope they are all able to bounce back.

Lisa N.

Yelp
I came here on a Wednesday around 11am and it was nice to see that it wasn't too crowded. I love how there was outdoor seating as well and my dog really enjoyed the breezy seating. Though it says it opens at 11, be sure to check which ones are open. When we went, only three places were open-- the poke place, mama Cho's, and the coffee place. My friend and I decided to order from Mama Cho's. I got the soy garlic KFC and she got tacos. I liked my sandwich but think the chicken could be a bit crispier. The garlic fries were delicious though! I can't wait to come back and try more foods!

Nick P.

Yelp
(2.5/5) Such a small and sad little food hall. We arrived here on a Sunday morning right when the food hall was supposed to open. Some of the food vendors were closed for the day or they were just barely opening. We were probably in and out of the food hall in under 2 minutes. Maybe we got there too early? Not sure. None of the food stalls really stood out to us anyway. We ended up picking up some coffee outdoors at Devout before we headed out.

Michelle Z.

Yelp
Long overdue review. Great location, easy parking and different food vendors to try all in one location. You'll find the following vendors in this marketplace: Pokeatery (poke bowl place), Milk & Cookie Bar, Shumi Ramen, Mama Cho's BBQ (Korean), C&H meat, T4 boba shop and Devout Coffee. There's plenty of tables and chairs to sit down and enjoy your food and drinks. Public restrooms are available at the back of the marketplace and they are surprisingly fairly clean. It does get busy and loud inside so keep that in mind. Good casual date place and it's right across the street from the park so you can walk off all the food right afterwards!

Anna N.

Yelp
I went here with two friends because we didn't know what we wanted to eat and wanted options. It's a decent sized public market with around 6 vendors. There was a poke vendor, ramen shop, Korean vendor, T4 (boba), and Milk & Cookie Bar. There were about 6 large community tables in the middle. They also had a small grocery section where you can purchase Korean meats, snacks, drinks, and fresh veggies. There was also an area along the back wall with a variety of drinks and craft beers. It's not arranged like most public markets probably due to lack of space. I got a poke box at Pokeatery. Probably the best priced poke ever and it tasted very fresh. The Poke box was about $15 and it came with your options of 4 proteins. It was my first time trying kelp noodles, which I chose as one of my bases. I really enjoyed the kelp noodles because of its crunchiness but I'm not sure if this is everyone's jam. They really do give you a huge portion! I really enjoyed their side of pickled sliced chili peppers. It wasn't spicy and kind of reminded me of the ones they serve at Vietnamese pho restaurants. For dessert, we took a few steps for some ice cream at Milk & Cookie Bar. My friend lives near here and enjoys their ice cream. They had a variety of Asian flavors such as Thai Tea, Ube, Black Sesame, and Jasmine Oreo. I got the Jasmine Oreo and it was sooooo good! You can taste the jasmine tea but it's not too powerful where you won't enjoy it. The combination was amazing. It's not too sweet and more on the creamier side. I definitely want more and regretted getting a junior size. With your scoop of ice cream, you get two free toppings. I want some Jasmine Oreo ice cream right now!

Yelp
Aaaadorable! The location isn't the greatest as it's not close to the freeway and you have to drive through some questionable streets, but this public market is so cute! I love the little coffee truck outside, the small bonsai garden in the parking lot, and the inside of the market is clean as a whistle. They require you to be masked, unless you're eating, so I appreciated the safety efforts. The food choices were not a ton, but the selection was eclectic -- from a BBQ place to ramen and boba. I chose the poke place since... well, sushi is my love! There was plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Outside, only a few tables had umbrellas, so we chose to eat indoors. At the time, the place was pretty empty so we could choose any table we wanted. The tables were long picnic tables, and it became "family-style" seating once more people started coming in. It may not sound nice, but honestly the whole market was adorable. I would definitely return here! Can't wait to try other places.

Victor G.

Yelp
Lake Chabot Public Market has the same tenants as my previous review 2016. only new items are the drinks and eats available to go at the far wall. also Devout coffee outside. no more inside dining. outside dining spaces available. parking spaces as limited as before. drink: tokyo black porter (5.54) 5% alc. -slightly edgy, not much buzz makku mango (4.04) korean rice beer, 6% alc., 7% sugar, 220 calories -unexpected sweet from mango concentrate, cane sugar would skip the sweet version next time. calbee honey chips from korea also available.

Colin R.

Yelp
Always come here for a quick lunch with friends nearby. There are very good options and it's a lovely space for casual dining. Our favorites are Shumi Ramen, Pokeatery and T4. Easy and ample free parking in their lot too. Since the pandemic, the large indoor dining space is closed of course. But there are very good signs for traffic flow (so you don't accidentally bump into someone!) and social distance spacing markers for ordering lines. Very safe and a good use of the unutilized dining space. But they also have a nice little outdoor dining space from some of the parking spots right out front. I hope they keep the outdoor space even when indoor dining reopens.

Anne Marie K.

Yelp
Sadly, the whole building burned down and we are not sure if they will rebuild. A loss for the whole community.

Javier P.

Yelp
Multiple food stands to select from. Poke, milk & cookie bar, T4, Ramen & Korean bbq. So about 5 different mini establishments with beverages next to Mama Cho's. Decent amount of seating. Get busy during lunch but I noticed most people order to go. Nice for a quick bite to eat.

Vi T.

Yelp
3.5 stars because this is smaller than I expected. This place is a food court with its own private parking in front and back of the building. There are 5 vendors with a small grocery section with a very limited selection of drinks (has a selection of cold craft beers in cans/bottles), minimal produce and snacks to complement the foods purchased at the other vendors. One of the vendors is a full service butcher shop (C&H Meat Co) right next to the small grocery section. Other vendors include Mama Cho's BBQ (Korean fast food: KFC, bulgogi, kalbi, and bimbibap rice bowls), Pokeatery (poke bowls), Milk & Cookie bar (ice cream, milkshakes, cookies etc), Shumi ramen shop, and T4 (boba milk tea shop). Shumi Ramen was closed today (Wednesday), so I tried Mama Cho's Korean BBQ and T4 today. There's picnic table seating both indoors and outdoors to dine on-site. Convenient for quick grab and go orders if you are near Lake Chabot or downtown Castro Valley and in the mood for Ramen, Poke, Korean BBQ bites, ice cream, and/or boba milk tea.

Rachel M.

Yelp
Clean pleasant place to hang out. Can get crowded and loud on weekends but it is easy to take a walk and get away from it all!

Dania M.

Yelp
Good amount of options. Went with two others and we each had something different and it was all fresh fast and tasty. Clean environment and nice to have the grab and go Korean foods.

Crystal G.

Yelp
Good small selection of tasty asian foods and groceries near the beautiful lake chabot. There is a poke, ice cream, boba, Korean Mexican fusion, Japanese ramen and katsu/don bowls, a t4 boba, and a small grocery area and a kbbq butcher (mama Cho's) There are picnic style tables within the marketplace center so most likely you'll end up sharing the table with someone, but the tables are pretty big so you won't really be sitting right next to them (social distancing). Outside when we went last Saturday had a cool coffee place as well.

Karen X.

Yelp
A great place with multiple offerings - poke, ice cream, boba, and a few others. I came here for ice cream before and it was a great little place. The price is fairly reasonable as well - they really load up on the ice cream, so serving size gets an A+. I've also tried the poke place and they have a decent selection. I tried their signature sauce, but I found it to be very salty. I loved the seaweed salad though. Great place to hang out and grab a bite to eat or dessert.

Austin F.

Yelp
The Lake Chabot Public Market is great spot for the whole family. This a regular lunch spot for poke, Korean bbq, or ramen and now they have devout coffee! If you are visiting the lake and need a quick bite, this is the place!

Al L.

Yelp
Our group had Mama Cho's Korean BBQ to meet up for lunch. When I arrived, I was at the Lake Chabot Public Market, which might have been a former supermarket. There was parking in the lot in front, but it was full and I was able to park in the lot in the back. Entering the Market, there is Pokeatery, Mile & Cookie Bar and Shumi Ramen on the left, T4 in the back, and Mama Cho's and C&H Meats on the right. Our group ordered from Mama Cho's and one ordered at Shumi Ramen. We were able to enjoy our food at one large picnic tables inside. They also have counter seating by the window and a nice patio out front. A nice neighborhood food hall market offering poke, ramen, Korean BBQ, boba, ice cream and a market for meat, veggies, drinks and frozen foods.

Nina Z.

Yelp
Hel-lo! Why has it taken me so long to come here?!? Always ventured around downtown Castro Valley and never realized Castro Valley had a miniature public market right down Lake Chabot Road along the way to Lake Chabot. This place includes all of my favorite things: boba from T4, ramen from Shimuri, poke from Pokeatery, ice cream from Milk and Cookie Bar, and Korean Mexican fusion from Mama Cho's. There's also a section where you can buy Asian snacks and drinks. I now know where to go to get my Asian fix. Watch out, Lake Chabot Public Market.

Sam N.

Yelp
Really nice love the ice cream and the asthetics they put on to the drinks! I got the ube milshake I'm with all the good stuff!

Sandra M.

Yelp
Correction C&H Market &Mama Cho's only closed on Monday thank goodness! Will be back for Chicken Sando and Sweet Potato fries and Bulgogi

Sandra M.

Yelp
C&H Market & Mama Cho's permanently closed. Sign on the front door. Loved their Chicken Sando and sweet potato fries. So sad.

Matthew C.

Yelp
Lake Chabot Public Market is a small plaza to enjoy a meal or a drink. Not only do they serve food but it also has a mini shopping mart. Inside includes the following restaurants: Mama Cho's BBQ, Pokeatery, T4, Milk & Cookie Bar, and Shumi Ramen. *Mama Cho's BBQ: -This is a Korean Mexican Fusion that has some great hot foods. They also have a small grocery place that you can get fresh vegetables. You can also get raw meat and it's sort of great place to get hot food but also some groceries. *Pokeatery -A great place to get poke and for a good place. As of this posting, you can find my review on the restaurant on my page. *T4 -If you want a quick boba drink this is the place to get boba and also their popcorn chicken is delicious. *Milk & Cookie Bar -THE BEST place to get ice cream in Castro Valley. They have such unique flavors and I have yet to review this place but it was a good place to get ice cream AND donuts. *Shumi Ramne -They have some great ramen options and I haven't had it as much but the ramen miso soup one is the one my family usually gets. [OVERALL] As of right now, during COVID, these restaurants do not have indoor seating. They have outside seating and there is limited spaces but it is right outside the restaurant. Everyone is wearing masks, especially the workers. Their bathrooms are currently closed. But I do recommend visiting this little plaza for some food and dessert. [TIMESTAMP] Monday 6:30 PM [MAY 10, 2021]

Xavier R.

Yelp
Sunday hours say that they close at 6:30pm. Walked in at 5:55pm and everything is closed except the ice cream shop and T4. T4 was open but their kitchen was closed and they were out of 4 different drinks. A perfect example of a company not caring to follow the business that they promise to the public. This place is also a hot box without air conditioning. Walk in and instantly start sweating.

Gisela G.

Yelp
Went in for mama Cho's and the bibimbap was so good!! The food came out within 10 minutes and all the staff was really nice. Got to sit outside in some sun and enjoyed our meals. Will come back next time I'm in the area for boba as well

Nicole S.

Yelp
Cool place to visit. Plenty of parking. There's some food establishments and drinks that you can pick up inside or from devout outside. There are a few tables outside to enjoy your meal. No dining inside currently. They also have a meat counter with some marinated meats that you can bring home and grill. The marinated meats are a bit pricey but saves time when you don't want to make your own marinade. I feel like there are other Asian grocery stores that are priced a bit better for the marinated meats. This place is still a cool place to visit and has some unique alcoholic beverages you don't always see.
