Best Lake Vacations in the U.S.

"A dramatic red-rock reservoir created by Glen Canyon Dam, stretching nearly 200 miles into southern Utah with more than 90 side canyons — it's ideal for houseboating in a desert-wilderness setting where you often will be the only boat in a side canyon; the lake has also been a popular film location." - Joe Yogerst Joe Yogerst Joe Yogerst is a writer, editor, and photographer with over three decades of experience covering travel. Inside Amangiri, One of America's Most Exceptional Hotels

"Exploring this extraordinary man‑made body of water—formed by flooding Glen Canyon and laced with skinny outlets fed by Colorado Rockies runoff—felt like slipping into another dimension: silent, dreamlike, and Mars‑like; in summer it’s all houseboats, cliff diving, jet skiing, and wakeboarding, but in March we were bundled against chilly headwinds in an open‑top boat, still mesmerized by the scenery." - Will Kopelman

Lake Powell is magical. One of my favorite places to take a vacation with the family. We have made lots of memories here. The scenery is breathtaking.

Our family visited here in early september after visiting Antelope Canyon. This is definitely a huge surprise to see masiv amounts of water embraced with red sandstone cliffs. It looks very nature, and immersed with everything around, blue sky, remote mountains. I just cannot believe it was man-made reserviro.

The bridge is amazing! We didn't stop, but it was great to look down! The kids loved looking over the bridge.

This place is like Lake Mead, Grand Canyon, Monument Vally, and Canyon De Chelly National Monuments all wrapped into one Big Beautiful Place. Absolutely amazing and beautiful. One of the most beautiful lakes, in my opinion. Rainbow Bridge arch in incredible. I was there and rented a boat during off season. Felt like I had the lake to myself.

We had a lovely kayak to antelope Canyon and hike up the canyon. The kayak back was tough 2.5 miles in a headwinds. It’s unfortunate that fisherman kill the fish and throw them back in the water. That was a little disgusting along the way.

Beautiful lake in the middle of the desert. Only time I have been in a boat in the middle of a sand storm.

Impressive and beautiful. Sadly, there is a dark lesson being taught here - the receding water level is an obvious wake up call.
