Obituary: Tim Idzikowski, Owner of Detroit BBQ Company, Has Died | Eater Detroit

"An event venue within Lake St. Clair Metropark where the couple was married in October 2018; the site is notable in the story for hosting the wedding that followed a last-minute catering emergency the day before the shower, which the pitmaster helped resolve." - Serena Maria Daniels

We were just here last week ( oct.2025) for our mini getaway and we love the place, you really have to pay entrance $10 to get in but once you're in there park is clean and wonderfully beautiful. They have mini beach and walkways and lots of picnic areas and playground for kids. Our first time and my daughter loved the place.

What a great park to spend a nice sunny afternoon at. Or better yet, anytime of day of year This park has it all Beach Playground Putt putt golf 18 hole par 3 course Marina with transient boat slips Clean bathroom facilities with showers in the marina Nature center Nature trails Splash pad Pool with water slides Basketball Volleyball What more could you ask for in a park?

Google
Absolutely fantastic beach area I was blown away. The nature center, nature trail (swampy, lot of bugs though!), beach and activities were simply beautiful, I had a great time and we’ll be back multiple times for sure

This place is amazing. I have been to the other metro Parks but this one is by far my favourite. Being on Lake St. Clair is gives me the illusion of being on a ocean. The beach is so big and sandy. There is a lot of space for everyone. I also enjoy the playground for the kids and also the splash pad and pool area. If you are looking for a park this is it! Do be aware that sometimes they do close the beach due to testing the water for e-colei. But most times it's clear.

Google
What a beautiful park for locals. I took advantage of all the trails and put my feet in the lake. This is a place you can easily spend hours. Nice variety of people. There is a convenience store that sells ice cream, sunscreen, clothing.

So peaceful!! Its the end of the season so there's not a lot of people and its so quiet!! Great place to sit and reflect, pray, or just breathe in some fresh air.

I visited on the 5th of July, and staff were doing a great job in cleaning up the mess from the holiday celebration. I was mostly there for sunrise and the birding. I did not get the specific gulls I was looking for, but I managed to spot a few new lifers and some Sandhill cranes that did not seem afraid at all. The hike around the perimeter of the park is a great walk. It was pretty quiet the entire time.

Google
Great park with a nice mix of trails by the water and within the woods. Nature center trails have awesome bird watching opportunities.

Yelp
I absolutely love coming to the Lake St Clair Metropark, especially on Sunday evenings in the summer when they have free concerts. They actually have an enclosed pavilion where the band plays and people can dance on the nice dance floor. Inside the pavilion there are nice air conditioned bathrooms! The park is also nice for walking or biking and they actually have a little water park section that is very nice!!

Yelp
Absolutely Love living close by this park! So many activities to enjoy in one place! Can't wait to play some pickle ball soon.

Yelp
Amazing job by the maintenance crew cleaning up the park after July 4 festivities. I cannot emphasize enough how well the staff cleaned up after the heavy use the park experienced on the holiday. And the pristine condition of the park had everything to do with the staff. It sure wasn't because people cleaned up after themselves. I saw the before and after with my own eyes. The place was TRASHED. Bravo to the largely unsung heroes of the maintenance crew. Appreciate you!

Yelp
Very beautiful Metro Park a lot of nature and scenery there me and my family enjoyed our time visiting.

Yelp
I love taking walks along this lake. The southern portion is more secluded at "West Beach," with picnic tables and nature trails near the golf course. This metropark offers a lot for families with multiple play areas and fields and pool. If you don't feel like packing a picnic there is a beach grill restaurant. Even though there is a beach most people don't jump in. I usually don't come in the summer because it does tend to get a little dirty with garbage from visitors. If you just want to enjoy the lake without the entry fee, Grosse Point has a nice shoreline but it doesn't have any rest areas.

Yelp
Nice park on the water, with a small beach. Plenty of activities for young and old. Decent facilities.

Yelp
Maen AlbashaS Fraser, MI 12 258 798 Jan 1, 2022 I've been here a few times as a guest for a party, but today was the first time exploring the park. January 1st. It's cold, as expected. Not much to take in since lots of things are closed due to season/weather and Covid. The bathrooms near the nature centers were open and clean. Our main purpose of today's visit was to go on a walk/hike, and we brought our two dogs. Oh, the sniffs they found!! They enjoyed themselves. However, for the DOG OWNERS, dogs are allowed, while in leash, and you have to clean up after them (duh), the "trails" do not allow dogs because they are preserving wildlife. There are paved and gravel walkways that dogs can go on. We may not bring them back because of this, but we plan to go back without dogs and check out the trails. There is Metropark Police driving around Her husband checked out the nature center and picked up some maps and information. He said there were bathrooms in there - and turtles and a mink (and other animals, but it is a snake-free building ). Will do back and check out again soon. She likes neutral central neutr and the bathroom open in January, She likes a park because no Snake no people guns around .She can bring a dogs and she can do BBQ with her husband and she can swim in the summer she can bring a boat because sometime its huge water.

Yelp
Grew up spending time at the beach!!! It's gonna lot better over the years! After I grew up my husband and I spent a lot of time on our boats. Then spent time there with my 2 sons and went many times as a mom helper for field trips from their elementary school!! Wonderful!!!

Yelp
Excellent County park with all the amenities you would want... beach, tons of picnic tables, "squirt zone" for the hot days, pool, community center, miles of walking trails, golf courses, snacks, store, ample parking, boat docks, and more. Nice views of lake St. Clair too.
google avatar

Yelp
GREAT Employees...! I rented one of the shelters for my daughters 13th birthday party... The West Beach Picnic Shelter: *Park in Lot A (Par 3 Golf & Foot Golf Lot) *Clearly marked w/reservation info *Four Garbage cans (at each corner of the shelter) *One can for Recycling *One can for Charcoal *A bar-b-q grill (about 3ft long, emptied/cleaned) *Ten picnic tables (these looked like new or they maintain them extremely well) Entire shelter area was cleaned and ready... I had to call the main office because I needed a bit of help with the BBQ grill (I couldn't lift the heavy grate by myself) an employee showed up within minutes to happily assist...

Yelp
A pretty park with wonderful lake view. Not as big as some other metro parks but still decent size. This place can be a bit windy since it's right next to the water, dress in layers if needed. The walk along the lake is very nice, some trails near the nature center too. Not all buildings are open during Covid, this means lots of restrooms are closed. The restroom next to the metro beach playground is open (the rest room on the side of that building is closed, the rest room facing the water is open).

Yelp
Love this park can't beat the are, the views are nice and the park seems much cleaner in more recent years Nature trails have really given a show we have seen deer multiple times

H H.

Yelp
Had everything you want in a park. Unfortunately pool, shops, rentals, and splash pad r closed once school starts. Would havep liked them to remain open on summer weekends.
google avatar

Yelp
The only metropark with a long beach area. Doesn't have a big area for trail and bikes like the others but it still nice. Directly next to lake st Clair.

Yelp
I love coming to the Nature Center and walking the trail. The actual Nature Center is very nice, one of the best in the area. The Nature Center Building has an education room, clean restrooms, a large viewing area for the outdoor birds, snakes and turtles on display and items to purchase. The trails are clean and well marked but I'm bummed they are not paved as I like to push my mom in her transporter chair when we go for walks in the woods. Mom can not come with me on these beautiful trails due to the many rocks. I like coming in the spring so I can see all the new life. If I'm lucky I get to see the baby swans...so cute and beautiful. The lake is also beautiful. There is so much to do at this park but my favorite spot is the Nature Center.

Kelly D.

Yelp
not too happy. I've called about the lights for the courts and the playground etc. they do not come on. park is open until 10:00 and we all have to leave at 9. courts are full and no lights. they were on a few weeks ago then suddenly stopped coming on. it's a short summer in Michigan. when I call I'm told they will be checked but nothing happens. very disappointed in general with park management

Yelp
I'm in my mid 50s, and have been visiting Lake St. Clair Metropark (aka Metro Beach) since I was about five years old. I went out there early this morning (January 1st, 2023) with some friends to enjoy the first day of the new year. Instead, we were horrified to see two guys in their little hunting outfits; hiding in the rocks and blowing away the wildlife that we came to see. I know that hunting is legal, and can benefit nature by thinning down over populated species. But why were they hunting at the very end of Huron Point (the long looping path past the boardwalk)? Is that even legal? If so, I wish the park could do a better job of separating areas of enjoying nature away from the areas of allowing it to be blown to bits. If it isn't legal in that area,... please have clear signage, so that all the wild Elmer Fudds will know where they can go... legally!

Yelp
This eastside staple of the Huron-Clinton Metroparks used to be called Metro Beach and pretty much every tried and true eastsider still calls it Metro Beach. When Metroparks changed the name the official rationale was they were trying to expand the focus from the beach to include the park's other amenities. It's very popular for picnics, or at least it was before covid, there's basketball, tennis, shuffleboard, a pool with a waterslide, nature trails, a kids playground, outdoor work-out equipment, fishing, a lengthy boardwalk and surely other stuff I'm forgetting. But Lake St. Clair Metropark still keeps the focus mainly on the beach. Of all that other stuff only fishing would really spring to the mind with the new(ish) moniker. So why the change? Cause dis beach nasty! Most years it gets shut down at least once or twice for high bacteria counts. Ecoli City! I haven't swam in these waters since I was a child - I should say waded actually since I think it was before I even learned to swim. (That was around ninth grade. I'm a late bloomer in that dept.) And even when the health department gives ol' Metro Beach the thumbs up I'm too sketched out to take the plunge. But nostalgia is a powerful drug and I have too many childhood memories here to totally dog the erstwhile Metro Beach. I miss the old super 70s Tot Lot; it evoked a lot of likes and comments when I posted Throwback Thursday pics on my Instagram, but one was a woesome tale of getting hurt with an assist from childhood bullies. It brought back memories of sometimes not being able to access the cool metal rocket ship slide due to it being monopolized by some older burnouts in training and kids keeping it too real playing pirates on the glorious wooden pirate ship. So I looked it up and the former Tot Lot was razed due to too many structures not meeting modern safety standards. The current kids playground is sleek, geometric, color coded, maximized for exercise and minimized for bringing the hurt with soft, pliable, rainwater absorbent surfaces should a child take a tumble. Though it lacks the charm of the old Tot Lot it's objectively better. No need to reminisce about leaded gas or not wearing seat belts in 2020. Stony Creek, another Metropark to the north and west of here blows the Metro Beach nature trails away, but they're still somewhat respectable. The best thing I can say about Metro Beach these days is it's a good place for a shortish bike ride - especially if your parents have a condo not far away - and it's spectacular for sunrises on the point. It's nice and peaceful at that hour too, just a few early birds and fishers dipping their lines into the Lake St. Clair waters.

Yelp
$10 Day pass. It was a great experience. Very beautiful. However dogs aren't allowed on the nature trails.

Yelp
Went with a friend to play some golf on the small course. It was the first time. It was a little wet but the course was groomed. Very short holes so you only need two clubs and a putter. No need for tees either. I have not been to this park in 25 years it was quite different than I remember. It looked really good . I didn't venture to the beach, so I don't know how that was. I may go back again to practice my short game on that course.

Yelp
Great park, excellent trails and the beach is lovely. You can enter for free if you walk, bike or inline skate into the park. There is a nicely paved trail to glide into Metropark. They have park benches all around that are dedicated in memory of lost family/friends. Speed limit for bikes is 10mph and I noticed some speed bumps along the bike trail. Looks like the water slide and pool area are pretty nice too. There is also a golf course, nature center and restaurant. Lake St Clair Metropark is a gem in this area,so bring your family out to enjoy all the amazing amenities.

Yelp
Nice park, but it needs some resurfacing all over their roads. It's had some good bike trails and the grass around the park is cut, very nice. The staff tries real hard to keep it clean. The boats that are on the ramps have the dirtiest water I have ever seen. The water is brown and it's evident that this water isn't safe to swim in. The parking lot is a disaster! There are more potholes than a greasy pizza. The parking lots needs a complete makeover. Some of the side streets are completely a mess with pock holes and rocks and sand. The beach looks like someone forgot to clean the water. What color is the water at this beach? It's grey or brown or maybe black. Water is not safe. The pool is nice but there isn't one chair or lawn chair for anyone to relax in. You must lay on the dirty, flat cement. My advice? Go somewhere else! Bathrooms are clean.

Yelp
I've been told the beaches are a little dodgy here in the summertime due to the bacteria in the water but I was just here a few weeks ago for the Girls on the Run 5k and thought the park itself was very lovely. The running trails were nice and smoothly paved and the spring bloom was just starting to fill the park with lots of lovely greenery. Before the race started we had a bit of time to walk around. I had been here several times as a kid and barely recognized the place since they had clealry put some $$ in renovations. I admired the really great looking pool (they were just filling it in time for the Memorial Day opening--a nice, clean option if the beach is closed) and the small putt putt area found near the starting line. Nice playgrounds and playscapes can be found here too. Views were nice, with water on both sides of the area we were on and the waterfront homes dotting the banks of one side had me day dreaming about living on the water! It was a chilly day already and the temps definitely were cooler and windier being on the water, but it actually made for really pleasant running conditions. But keep that in mind if you're on the edge of sweater weather.

Yelp
While I've been going to Metropark for quite a while, it is only in the last few years that I've really grown to appreciate it. To begin with, Lake St. Clair Metropark has been undergoing quite a few improvements. Actually, the improvements (more parking, etc.) is scheduled to continue for another few years. It's nice to see a park striving to get better and not just stagnate. Personally, I like to run or bike the trail, and will sometimes stop at the gazebo half way to rest. The gazebo is a great place to sight see, and can be rented to host weddings and other events. The views are outstanding (see my photos), as are the park workers. The workers are always smiling and staying busy. I've never seen them goofing off or being lackadaisical. I don't know how much more you can say about a park other than this - a beautiful nature trail with diverse wildlife, a luscious beach front to get your KFC on (that's what I call tanning), and plenty of places to rent to have BBQ or other events, as well as grills and benches if you simply want to "set up shop" somewhere. As with any park, getting there early is key, and worth it.
google avatar

Mark G.

Yelp
Also known as Metro Beach. The park has a lot to do from walks on the nature trail (no dogs allowed), pool, beach, water park, concerts in the park, fireworks, etc. Buying a yearly pass is a better option than paying per visit. The pass gives you access to all the Metro parks.
google avatar

Karen S.

Yelp
Very nice park. Took several long walks during the fall. Nice to walk along the waters edge. The park does markoff the 1/4miles, so you can keep track. A beach, a pool, a water area for small children, playgrounds, picnic areas, marina, boat launch, fishing piers, this park has it all. Well maintained & social distancing was not a problem. We bought a yearly pass. The fee is normally $30, but we got the senior discount & bought in December, so our cost was $24. Well worth it. Can't wait to go back in the spring! (Parks open all winter, too)

Michelle B.

Yelp
We love coming to this park, everything is nice, everyone is pleasant and we love to watch the boats coming and going

Amy S.

Yelp
Sign your family up for the voyageur canoe or nature center programs! Amazing and educated staff! Great for summer fun for the family!

Yelp
My daughter's cross country meet was at Metropark, better known as Metrobeach, today. I haven't been but once or twice since I was a kid. The park itself stretches out to a point with (obviously) water on both sides. It was pretty windy today so there were a few windsurfers and parasailors out on the water. The water was choppy and the sky and water stone gray. It was a nice place to be. A daily pass was $10. Support your parks, they're a community treasure!

Steve J.

Yelp
Great metro park to visit with the family. Lots of amenities/activities for all ages to enjoy.

Yelp
Nice metropark to come visit throughout the year! This park has a lot to offer including walking/biking trails, beach area, a marina to watch the boats, fishing areas, a Nature Center, putt putt golf, foot golf, kayak rentals, a playground, volleyball nets, basketball and tennis courts, a splash pad and a pool with a water slide and much more. There really is something for everyone! During the summer weekends, the park is very busy. However, parking is plentiful and a metropark pass is needed to enter the park. I haven't visited during the winter, but I hear that the park also offers various activities during snowy months as well! Definitely worth checking out if in the area and looking for some outdoor fun.
google avatar

Amelia N.

Yelp
This place has really been cleaned up recently. There are many options for all ages including paddle board and kayak rentals, parks, bikes, squirt zone, pool, etc.
google avatar

Suzzette M.

Yelp
When someone said they were going to Metro back in the day, people would go "eww." While the beach water can be...questionable there are TONS of other great things to do!! The bike/walking trail is beautiful! You can skip the beach and play in the sprinkler zone or jump in the pool. Putt putt golf and ...regular golf is also available! The nature center is really cool and kids will love it! This place is great for an evening bike ride, weekend meet-up, or if you jsut want to sit at the marina and watch the boats go by!

Yelp
I love this place! I've been coming here for about 6 or 7 years...when it was still called Metro Beach ;) During the spring and fall, I bring one of my dogs here and do long walks up the Peninsula (a little over 2 miles from the parking lot). I've recently started training for a 5k so this has been my favorite place to jog. I love the views, the animals (super friendly squirrels this year) and the beauty of the park. It's always very clean. The cost is affordable. I buy the annual pass each year. It has increased over time from $20- $25 and now it's $35. But it's still worth it! In the summer, I sometimes visit the pool on a Saturday or Sunday morning. It is ginormous with a couple slides and 2 diving boards. I like that there is a kids area and a non-kids area. It gets packed about 1p on the weekends and there are usually some obnoxious teenagers so I usually leave then. The pool cost $5 for the day. There is a beach on Lake St clair but it's usually really gross...I don't know if it's goose poop or something else. There is also a splash park and a nature Center. It's a great resource and I am so glad I started coming here!

Yelp
It's nice, but the Michigan Park's pass doesn't work here, and it's $10 per car. Everything is well kept up, clean, and working. There's something for everyone here; beaches, golf, tennis, children's play structures, pavilions, and more. Parking is vast but can be a bit far from your destination. It's a park, so if you're in the area and want to go to a large park with a lot to do, this place fits the bill.

Robert W.

Yelp
We went swimming in the pool last week 1) reasonably price, 2) clean, 3) lifeguards saved 2 small kids doing the obstacle coarse in the 12 foot area, and 4) beautiful pool.
google avatar

Kimberly K.

Yelp
I enjoy morning walks at Metro beach. You can walk by where the boats dock all the way to the point and then down by the beach. They keep it clean and well maintained. It's a great place if you want to clear your head and just take in the nature around you.

Yelp
Another free Sunday night concert at Metro Beach!! Dr. Pocket in concert last night - good band (8 piece, plus a couple vocalists), great dancing in the night. The crowd consists of mostly retirees, or those close to it. Sprinkle in some younger folks here and there, and you have the typical scene of Sunday evenings for this gathering. From toddlers and families coming off the beach, to senior citizens who are probably in their 90s, everyone is there. Now don't get me wrong about the age - there isn't a traffic jam of oldsters pushing walkers down the side walk. It was rock -n- roll last night and these people never forgot they grew up in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Probably the same ones who used to show up on American Bandstand with Dick Clark. Yep, they're still here, with wrinkles and sags, still rockin the night away. And you can see why some have such beautiful smile lines - they really have a good time when they are out on the dance floor. It's truly a good crowd every Sunday night. Grab a lawn chair and head out for a music filled evening.

Yelp
Came here 2days ago with my kids. I've never really had a thing for their beach here because there's just so many seagulls and so the place is full of birds' poop. My kids really enjoyed their sprinkly sprinklers play area by the pool. There's a $4/person fee for a pool entrance wristband. Pool closes @7, so go earlier if you want to enjoy the pool :) we weren't able to fully explore and enjoy the park because their beach is closed due to E. coli & playground area is closed for renovation :( . Do check out their nature center though. I'd come back, they've put some work into this park so it's definitely more worth the money now. I'd recommend getting a yearly pass if it's earlier in the year. You'll save more in the long run if you plan to make multiple visits and be able to go to all the metro parks &more :)

Yelp
My sister and her husband were visiting from Shanghai and she insisted I take them to a beach or something. Where am I going to find one of those near us? Google was kind enough to find this park for us forty minutes away. The weather was beautiful on the September day we visited. We relaxed in the sand for a while before taking a few pictures in the water. Afterwards, we walked around the park for a little exploring.

Yelp
This place USED TO be amazing, but with the water being at an ultimate high the beach is usually closed due to ecoli

Yelp
This is a cute park. I wonder why I hadn't heard of it. Is smaller than Stoney and Kensington so also less people which is nice. But big BUT no swimming in the beach! So we came swimming suits and kiddo excited and you cannot go into the water! They have an sciatic park but I don't wasn't to be chasing my 2 year old I wanted to lay in the sand while he build sand castles in the beach. I wish I had es before unpacking all our stuff. We only stayed for lunch and had to go to another park.

Yelp
Such a serene place to sit and watch the sailboats. The breeze, the water droplets gently hitting my face while sitting on the bed of a friend's truck and kicking back a few beers... priceless. There's also plenty of hiking and bike riding trails.

Yelp
So fun for the kids! Park at the main entrance, hit up the playground, then beach and splash pad! If you get hungry there are multiple snack shakes with burgers, fries, ice cream etc.

Yelp
What a rathole! I used to go here by car and boat dozens of times per year. The beach wasn't ever "great" but it was at least swimable... Not any more. It's as if they totally let the beach go to hell, and now concentrate more on the mini-golf, par 3 golf course, pool, and "splash pad." The beach was absolutely disgusting. The sand was filled with bird crap, and the first 4' of water looked more like raw sewage than anything that I would want to swim in. There were literally thousands of floating goose turds everywhere. You couldn't walk through it without coming within six inches of poop. I was completely and utterly disgusted. They don't rake the "sand" (it's more like little rocks), they don't rake the sea weed or crap from the water entrance point, it's filthy disgusting, and the beach is devoid of lifeguards. Unbelievable.... I was honestly shocked as to how nasty it has gotten there. The marina was no better. It was filled with beer cans, water bottles, sea weed, etc. No wonder no one goes there anymore. What a dump. If you want to come and walk on the bike path, walk through the "nature trail," play mini-golf, or go to the par 3, it's an alright place to go (personally I'd rather just walk the clinton river walk for free than pay to get into this dump, or hit the par 3 at Ramler golf course), but if you're actually looking for a "beach" I'd look for some where else. Belle Isle is cleaner these days. I wish I would have taken a picture of the nasty sludge to post on here so you guys can see what it really looks like.

I have been going to Metro Beach since I was a kid and as I grow up, I realize there are more and more things to do, including, but not limited to par 3 golf, mini-golf, shuffleboard, tennis, swimming (pool and beach), picnicking, bike/rollerblading path, and playground. And what's best? Most of these are free or super cheap. My girlfriend and I went on a hot July day (we're talking almost 100 degrees) to work up a good sweat and then jump in the cool water. Unfortunately, the lake felt like bathwater! The pool was extremely crowded, but I think there was some kind of organized trip because there were kids everywhere. To add to the excitement, there was a wedding on the beach in the distance. Although, I felt bad for anyone that was wearing more than a bathing suit. In years past, there have been controversies about the water quality at Metro Beach, however, even with that mar on their record, they have done a good job of creating a fun environment for both kids and adults. Protip: There is no shaded parking and on a hot day, you car WILL COOK, so be prepared. Moreover, there are a lot of bathrooms and water fountains, and even a small food court just in case you burn through your own drink supply.
