The World's Most Beautiful Alpine Lakes

"This small lake sits just below the summit of Mauna Kea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island. Scientists still have questions about how the lake formed, with some pointing to the sulfur-bearing steam off the volcano and others suggesting it’s due to Mauna Kea’s glacial past. Like the volcano itself, Lake Waiau is a sacred place for native Hawaiians; it was likely named after the snow goddess Waiau, who is said to have bathed in the lake."

It's a mystery as to how this lake can even exist! Nobody knows exactly why the porous volcanic rocks in this area are holding water. Scientists believe it may be due to a layer of ash from an ancient eruption of Mauna Kea or possibly due to a layer of permafrost beneath the ground. It's a stark and stunningly beautiful location. A place sacred to some Hawaiians who still deposit their baby's umbilical cords in the lake. Be cautious of of the windy, cold conditions and the oxygen deprivation if you hike here. My husband was starting to lose part of his vision from lack of oxygen! He fully recovered when we got to a lower elevation.

I was so amazed ! This lake is called "Ice Age Lake" well... yes, its chilling cold at 13.000ft Becareful hicking there. The high altitude and lack of oxygen may make you dizzing and tired. Take it easy and stop when feel dizzy. Give time to reoxigenate your brain then continue Its worth it !!

So cool. Place has massive aura. Would want to play a legendary concert here with the acoustics of the surrounding rock.

It’s a sacred place for Hawaiian. Hiking to this place is so surreal. You will feel strong energy here. I should have brought some offerings. Great place to visit.

What a place! It’s not quite along the road but not a very long hike to get there. Definitely make trip when you’re up on Mauna Kea. When we were there we had snow on the ground and the lake was covered by a thin layer of ice: what a view in itself, and particularly given the fact that you’re on Hawaii!
