The World's Most Beautiful Alpine Lakes

"This small lake sits just below the summit of Mauna Kea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island. Scientists still have questions about how the lake formed, with some pointing to the sulfur-bearing steam off the volcano and others suggesting it’s due to Mauna Kea’s glacial past. Like the volcano itself, Lake Waiau is a sacred place for native Hawaiians; it was likely named after the snow goddess Waiau, who is said to have bathed in the lake."
