The Twin Cities’ Best Sandwiches

"The deli and cheese counter tucked into Lake Street’s Lake Wine & Spirits serves some of the Cities’ best (if somewhat under-the-radar) sandwiches. These deli classics — muffulettas, horseradish roast beef, clubs, spicy Rachels, Cubans smeared with creme fraiche Dijon — are remarkably budget-friendly, all landing in the $5 to $8 range. There’s a notable vegetarian sandwich selection as well." - Justine Jones, Eater Staff

The Best Restaurants in Minneapolis’s Uptown Neighborhood - Eater Twin Cities

"Maybe it’s no longer a secret to locals — but the cheese shop connected to Lake Wine & Spirits is a hidden gem. Not only does it stock a variety of tasty cheeses, imported pasta, and preserves from around the world, but it’s a killer sandwich shop, too. The “Lucky Lady” is made with turkey, creamy brie, peppery arugula, and lingonberry horseradish mayo; the “Sean” is a meat feast of ham, soppressata, and provolone, drizzled in a smoky burnt onion vinaigrette. Most of these sandwiches cost less than $7 each." - Natalia Mendez, Julie Zhou

Best sandwiches in the city by a long shot. I wish they would come out with some new sandwich options every once in a while. Edit. Meh anymore always closed early.

I can't remember if I've left a review already but I just love Lake wine, my local liquor store. Best deli sandwiches and good selections. My only suggestion to you all is to get some of those more hipster wines in and make a section of only those- like dank skin contact white wines and oranges that have to stay in the cooler. It might draw a more bougie crowd with $$ as well as keep the usual customers

They’ve got everything I ever need and their sandwich shop is great! Also I don’t like tomatoes and when I ordered it without the woman working suggested I do the sweet peppers instead and she was so right! Definitely ordering them on my sandwich every time.

Very cramped layout. Constantly having to walk sideways, can hardly get past other customers and prices are really high. They have a few decent bottles of bourbon sitting behind the counter but I have to figure they're sitting there because of the extremely high price.

FRESH ALTERNATIVE AWARD 🫑 CLEAN DELI AWARD 🥇 I visited this tiny delicatessen with a longtime bestie. We stopped by May 15th-a sleepy sunny Sunday afternoon around 2:15 pm. The shop was not busy, but steady. It’s located on West Lake street in the center of Minneapolis, and holds some of the finest freshest tastes you’ll find anywhere. The secret here are the original owners’ recipes, which were curated over time. A liquor store is attached as well. We didn’t go in, but apparently they have a large selection of different liquors. A small hole-in-the-wall with traditional meats and a huge selection of different cheeses, olives, marinated mushrooms, specialty nuts, jams, jellies, bbq sauces, specialty crackers, coffees, drinkables, and water crackers. They also have fudge for your sweet tooth! Obscure selections keep you on your toes! Huge chalkboard shows you all the sandwich selections, and their daily specials. A tiny table with 2 chairs is a quaint place to wait for your order-and be ready to wait a little bit, because everything is made fresh for you, once you order. You don’t just get a pre-made sammich that’s been laying there for hours! We ordered 2 sandwiches: The Club, which was ham & turkey piled high with cheddar and arugula & a special mayonnaise with thinly sliced red onions and tomato on steamed ciabatta bread. Also we ordered the Ham & Jal, Ham, cheddar, arugula and tomatoes with a spicy homemade jalapeño jelly on steamed ciabatta bread. Both sandwiches were amazingly delicious and the bread warm and wonderful. Yummmmm We complimented our meals with a couple selections of “Uglies” brand potato chips, we chose BBQ and Jalapeño flavors. They were great! Just as good or better than the regular brands. Well folks lemme tell ya: this is a diamond in the rough and you’d best try it out if you’re in the area. Neighborhood is bouncing back strong after a tough couple years and it shows. New updates, new feel to the area. Minneapolis once again does not disappoint! We also picked up some ‘sample cheeses’ small inexpensive cutoffs from the larger hunks of cheese just right to grab a few and take home for a cheese plate taste-test. I grabbed a container of marinated mushrooms (sorry no pic- they were so good they were inhaled)! These mushrooms popped in your mouth, you could tell they were so fresh. And the marinade! SO GOOD. Everything was so noticeably fresh that each bite was a pleasure! I will be back - because I need to try more of their freshly made sandwiches. Service presented nicely wrapped in white butcher paper. Very clean tasting. Friendly and efficient staff. Prices were around $10 for each meal. WTP AWARD ✅ Highly recommended! We WILL be back!

super cute space with a separate little cheese shop near the front that has incredible sandwiches! the prices on their website are out of date, but definitely worth checking out! a hidden gem :)

Legit deli. Great boutique Italian salamis and cheeses. Sandwiches are on point. I highly recommend the “Sean”. So good.

So excited to grab some cheese to pair with my orange wine and the dude closed the shops 7mins early. What a bummer/bad customer service before the Memorial Day weekend.

Yelp
Great European wine selection and easy to navigate. If not, staff is very helpful with pointing you in the right direction.

Yelp
Sweet, cute little cheese shop attached to Wine & Spirits shop. Popped in to look around. Very nice cheese selection, and an outstanding selection of charcuterie paring items Nice and friendly Staff, ordered a Heidi-ho... funny name. It was done to perfection and very tasty!

Yelp
We had lunch at the MSP location. It was fantastic and we will make time to go each time we are traveling. Service was great and the food, yum! Huge servings and would definitely share! Oh, the wine list was great too!

Yelp
So yea... I'm a fan of Lake Wine & Spirits. I usually come by for a bottle of wine when attending an event. This time i was a gf and she wanted to stop and get her fav drink.. the Lime Arita and I wanted to stop and check out their cheese. Ambiance: There are a lot of options for whatever you're looking for. Service: Everyone is always friendly and helpful. The lady who worked in the meat and cheese area was very knowledgeable and helpful re: the cheese selections. I'm literally on here simply to discuss the cheese that they have. LOL I had the best Sage Derby Cheese and a really good Swiss cheese as well, but the cheese with the sage was worthy of conversation. My friends teased me for bringing "purse cheese," but were curious of my green cheese. It looked like blue cheese, but of course green, so they were wondering how it taste. First bite from me... Mmmmmm.... this is soooo good! So of course they wanted to try it. Everyone who tried (exactly 7ppl) literally wanted to know where i got it. So i figured it was worthy of a Yelp review! Guys, go visit for libation, meat and cheese and decent service. I'm leaving work TODAY to see if i can get my hands on a larger block of this cheese; no joke. LOL

Nathan S.

Yelp
The food shop is worth every penny. However the liquor store is expensive beyond words. I bought two six packs of non-alcoholic beer and it came to twenty-three dollars. I mentioned this to the cashier and he said, Yup. Terrible greed. Shop for non alcoholic beer at Chicago Lake liquors and save money.

Gaby F.

Yelp
Service is terrible. Everyone in there is absolutely rude and hates their life. Heard the staff talking shit about me multiple times. Will not be returning and a special f* you to Paul!

Yelp
I live a few blocks away from this place and love it! I can walk down and get 6 for $36 and a sandwich! They have a great selection of wine, beer, and spirits in the liquor store and AMAZING sandwiches in the deli/cheese shop. The cheese shop has anything and everything you'd need if you're having some friends over and need snacks. The gentlemen working the cheese counter is so friendly and always makes great sandwich recommendations. I only dock one star for the people who work the checkout in the liquor store... so unfriendly it's awkward. I shouldn't be feeling awkward for being nice to them and getting nothing but grunts in return...??

Yelp
Is this just what the neighborhood ordered? There are certainly a lot of very thirsty Uptowners/Whittierans that are happy to have them... myself included. This liquor and cheese shop is tops. It's a locally owned alternative to shopping at Lunds or Kowalski's when you need to bring something to a party or are hosting some friends yourself---plus you can buy booze there too. It's like a little sister to Surdyk's! I browsed the beer selection before deciding to do the mix and match six pack of seasonal beers. I chose from a shelf of mostly winter ales from Midwest breweries like Capitol Brewery, Furthermore, etc. Then I made my way into the cheese shop, where they sell a host of local and international cheeses, cured meats, honey, crackers, balsamic vinegar and extra-virgin olive oil in bulk, baguettes from Salty Tart and other tasty things. I like to eat cheese for dessert (and every other meal), so I treated myself and bought a small slice of really expensive goat cheese (described to me as "goat gouda"). The cheese-monger was generous with samples, which I appreciate when you're dropping a good deal of money on something. Ken seems to know more about cheese than almost anybody. They have this deal in the cheese shop that is the bee's knees. For $20, you get three cheeses (they rotate, but the cheese lady said they always do a balanced mix), crackers or a baguette, maybe a small jar of honey and something else. Whatever it was, it was a great deal. I'll update when I actually go buy it. It's the PERFECT hostess gift. I noticed that they have a lot of specials online and a lot of tastings for anything from wine to bloody mary mix to cheese, so it might be worth friending them on Facebook, following them on Twitter and maybe find out about this Uptown Beer Guild they have started.

Yelp
This is easily my favorite liquor store in Minneapolis. Yes, it even edges out Surdyk's. LW&S's wine selection is really organized, compact, and decently priced - they're always offering multiple specials that can save you quite a few dollar bills. Their 6 for $36 wine special is incredible - such a bargain, considering some of the varieties and brands that you can get for $6 each! They carry a very respectable variety of craft beers and have a great selection of 6- and 4-packs as well as bombers. As you walk in, check the front of the store for their rotating beer specials. And if none of their sixers is striking your fancy, you can make your own for $10! This my favorite kind of game to play (when I'm inside a liquor store, anyway). And in case that wasn't enough, there's a small cheese shop adjacent to the liquor store, where you can pick up a few accoutrements for your picnic or dinner party - cheeses, cured meats, spreads, crackers, etc. And they make sandwiches for $4.50! The store is clean and organized, and I have to say that I prefer this layout to the log-jams that can happen when you're trying to maneuver around people's carts at Surdyk's. The staff is very helpful, knowledgeable, and considerate - there's no pushing you to buy something out of your ideal price range. I even witnessed an employee from the cheese shop escort a customer over to the liquor store and ask another employee to direct her toward wines that would pair well with her cheese selections. Talk about customer service!

Yelp
A very well organized and user friendly store, a high end looking place, with not high end prices. And a great cheese shop attached to boot. They took a chance by opening in a lower rent section of Lake St, and even though the area had been gentrifying for a while, it was still a risk. They have a very good selection of mix and max 6 pack, and good selection of craft and high end beers.

Yelp
This is my favorite liquor store in Minneapolis, it's a bit out of my way, but a few extra minutes is worth coming here. The beer selection is excellent and my friend tells me the same about the wine section. Reasonable prices. The place is clean and organized, staff is polite. The parking lot is a bit cramped, may be an issue if you drive a large vehicle.

Yelp
I saw that the Cheese shop had a Cuban on their menu now and I had to get in there to try it. This review is basically of the Cuban sandwich. All the other positive, glowing comments I have made before still stand. I have to say that my Cuban sandwich quest is often thwarted by my search for a classic Cuban and for some reason restaurants try to "make it their own" which does not work for me. I want roast pork, ham, swiss cheese, cheap ass dill pickles and ball park mustard (and not grainy deli mustard) on a sandwich that has been pressed. It is truly one of the things that everyone should experience in its simplest form. The LWS Cuban has pork loin and ham but switches up the cheese to a creme fraiche-Dijon mustard sauce and uses higher end dill pickles. After getting the sandwich I drove a few blocks to park in the shade to have the sandwich. It was absolutely dripping with the creme fraiche sauce that had thinned on the heated meats. The bun was completely sogged out. The sauce was also very heavy on the horseradish and very light in the mustard component. I like horseradish but it was too much in this sandwich. I know the bun was not traditional Cuban bread but you simply can't find Cuban bread very far outside of the Miami area. I will continue my search for a Cuban sandwich here in the MSP area but will skip the LWS version in the future.

Yelp
I live nearby and come here to pick up wine for my family dinners on occasion, and when I've had a particularly bad day at work I'll stop in the cheese shop for a sandwich. Those sandwiches never fail to brighten my day. It's the kind of place that's hard to find anymore, the sandwiches are delicious and cheap and the ambiance feels like something from decades ago- in a good way.

Lauren D.

Yelp
HIGHLY recommend the lucky lady sandwich. Best turkey and brie I have ever had in the side cafe. Cafe is so cute and has other fun cheese board supplies. Perfect one stop shop for a wine and cheese night.

Yelp
Hard to find craft beers, great wine selection and cheese galore - uptown's classiest liquor store! Not only does Lake Wine & Spirits have one of best craft beer selections in the area (and yes, you can build your own local craft beer 6-pack!) there is a fabulous wine assortment sorted by type/country of origin, a well-stocked cheese shop ++ great parking and friendly, helpful staff. A few tips/tricks... - Heading to or planning a party? They've got a great selection of craft beer 24/36 packs or walk towards the back of the store for the small kegs or classy boxes of wines. - Hungry? Stop by the cheese shop to pick up some yummy sandwiches, you won't be disappointed! - Trying to pair a wine with an upcoming dinner? Just ask the staff, they are great with helping you find the right wine (and no they won't try to sell you the most expensive bottle!) - They've got a $6 or $36 wine special, make sure to ask about if you're looking to stock up! Lake Wine & Sprits is a welcome addition to uptown! I'm always stopping in here for a quick build-your-own 6-pack, a classy bottle of wine as a gift or a fun snack idea for a party.

Yelp
This place is GREAT! The people are always friendly. They have a little cheese shop in front (where the people are a little less friendly), where they have an assortment of cheeses and accompaniments (honey, jams, meats, olives, etc.). The accompaniments are all prepackaged though for the most part so don't expect an olive bar or anything. The selection of spirits, wine, and beer is fantastic. The prices are pretty reasonable. They do a great job at providing variety and making the most of the space they have. They could use a little help with organization - their bloody mary mixes were all over the place, in the same general vicinity but had we not checked another aisle we would've missed another few brands they carried. When you buy more items they give you a box to put them in so you're not carrying a bunch of cartons and mixers around while fumbling for your car keys. They have a parking lot and a bus stop right in front. Bonus (maybe a lot of places have this but I never noticed before): they carry simple syrup in rose and lavender flavors (there is 1 more but I can't remember)! It was a medium sized bottle for $9.99. All in all great place to go, this place is almost always busy - the many times I've gone so far it's never been empty, even near closing time.
google avatar

Sergei N.

Yelp
The place has become a lot more popular and the service has gone to toilet. The waiter was so overworked that she did not wipe a table with some green mayo on it from a previous customer and slapped menus right on top of that. We used to be regulars. No longer.
google avatar

Yelp
This is my neighborhood wine store and I love it. Close enough to bike to, they over a great selection of craft beer and delicious wines. Their 6 for $36 is great and has a good selection of quality wine. I'll often do this deal to try something new and end up getting a new favorite. There's also an amazing deli to the right and outside the main doors to the wine shop. It's so yummy! They have hot and cold ready to make sandwiches as well as cheeses, jams, oils and chocolate. Every time I go here for a sandwich I end up buying something else. It's like target but without the red and khaki. Higher quality food too. I highly recommend checking this deli out as you will not forget it. In fact, make sure you stay in MN so you can relive the glorious sand which memories.

Yelp
I can't justify spending money here anymore. I've lived in the neighborhood for years and have shopped here countless times since it opened, but my experiences with staff here lately have been sub-par. I stopped in to buy a six-pack I'd already tried and loved but couldn't find anymore. I walked up to a register with no one in line and asked the cashier if he knew if the beer was in stock. He couldn't have been less interested in helping me find it. It's not like I asked for an unabridged explanation of how beer is made. Cut to recently, when I went in to buy a couple of six packs. I got to the register and was just about to say hello when the cashier (different guy) blurted out, "ID, please." Can a person get a simple greeting? Then, the cashier started chatting up a customer he knew who lined up behind me, saying nothing else to me for the rest of the sale. No "Have a good one," "Thanks for stopping in," or anything. He didn't attempt to bag the items or ask if I needed one, so I just took one and did it myself. I'm not asking for a boutique liquor store experience (if that's even a thing), but simple courtesies go a long way--and you won't find them here.
google avatar

Maggie P.

Yelp
I've been coming here for awhile and have picked up some dud beers lately. However, this review isn't about that. Recently I came in and saw a beer I wanted to purchase underneath a few layers of unrefrigerated beers near the far back beer cooler. I asked a member of staff if they had that six pack anywhere convenient. He pointed to some beers from the same brewery, but they were different styles of beer. I said, "right, but I want dr. Vennum by ale asylum, not these ones." At that point he shrugged his shoulders and didn't make any other moves to help me. At that point I was confused, was that beer not for sale? Am I allowed to move these flats of beers to get to it? He walked away without further questions. I just left and bought some beer at a different liquor store. Maybe he was having an off day, but what was that about, guys? It was very bizarre.
google avatar

Ryan H.

Yelp
Beware of this liquor store. Tonight I accompanied my girlfriend when she tried to pick up a couple bottles of wine. As I was just standing there, waiting for her to pay, the cashier demanded to see my ID, even though I was not buying a thing! As I started to question him on this, some other staff member (who seemed to be a bag boy or something) started aggressively arguing with me, told me I was being very rude and asked me to leave. I was told that they can refuse service to any customer for any reason, and that he did not have to tell me why. I never raised my voice or was rude in any way, however this individual went out of his way to make sure that I never shop at the store again. Apparently, it is this store's policy to ID every member of a "party," regardless of whether they are buying anything, and the definition of a "party" is left up to the discretion of... the cashier? This is certainly not a law, and makes no sense at all. It certainly will not do a thing to prevent someone from giving alcohol to minors, if that was the intention. The liquor laws in this country are bad enough without having to deal with poor customer service from liquor store staff. I very much hope the management of Lake Wine & Spirits sees this review and chooses to change their draconian policies. I have shopped there a couple of times in the past and had no problem, but this was one experience I do not wish to repeat. Edit: I failed to mention that I am in fact over 30 years old. Please do not patronize this establishment until they have changed their ways...

Yelp
Lake wine and spirits has all the ingredients of a great liquor store - parking, wine tasting (at least when I was there on a Friday night), HUGE beer selection (hard to find beers in both cases and single bottles/cans), vast selection of wine, all the liquor you could imagine, knowledgeable staff, and cheese! Also, I appreciate that lack of pretension. It seemed like mostly regular folks getting their provisions for the weekend and the staff was eager to help. It had the selection of a Surdyks but was much less overwhelming. Like a few other shops they offer numerous bottles of wine as a mix and match set. (6 for $36). I wasn't in the market for that much wine but it did seem like the way to go. They also let you mix an match your beer for a customized 6 pack. What a great idea for a party! I will be back before my next soiree! Lastly, they did ID both people in my party. They weren't rude about it at all, they just said it was their policy. I have no complaints. However, do make sure you have your ID.

Summer K.

Yelp
The helpful barkeep at Dalton and Wade guided us here as our best bet to find hard to find bourbons and craft beer in the area. He did not steer us wrong. We had two very knowledgeable employees help us with both bourbon and craft beer selections. Prices were reasonable/comparable. While we were solely on the market for beer/bourbon yesterday, they appeared to have a large inventory of wine and other spirits, too.

Yelp
Minnesota's arcane liquor laws have done the state's consumers a great disservice. Liquor stores dot our landscape mostly to sell beer, which in most states could be acquired from grocery stores (or gas stations) just as well. Worse, zoning laws prevent competing liquor store's from opening and stagnate an improvement in the market. Somehow, Lake Wine & Spirits overcame these obstacles to show Uptown what a wonderful, diverse liquor store can provide. As others have noted, a mini-Surdyks is a fair description of the place. They have great selection of beers (clearly, with an emphasis on local microbrews), as well as the basic and more upscale liquors I would hope for. I did not have a chance to peruse the wine (not that I'm much of an expert there), or to take advantage of the cheese shop (but seriously, who doesn't love-love-love a cheese shop. Best of all, it's not on the other side of town, it's just down the street from me. Hooray! EDIT (6/19): Hey, they're dog friendly, too. And also, just really, really friendly. When I needed to swing into the cheese shop, one of the employees offered to hold onto my dog (as dogs are not allowed in there). I suppose it helps my dog is just awesomely friendly; they almost didn't want to give him back.

Yelp
Huge tip: this place might have some of the best sandwiches in the twin cities. No joke. Not only are they stupid cheap ($5 or under) but they are huge and made with superb ingredients. I love the sopressatta with goat cheese, sun dried tomatoes, and arugula. I love their turkey and Brie with cherries, pears, and mustard. Most of all, I love the LooLoo, with turkey, Brie, arugula, and lingonberry/horseradish aioli. Just bursting with flavor and a steal at $5. Total hidden gem. They also have a sandwich called the Kim Cheeze which has kimchee and cheese curds. Dying to try it! Seriously, next time you're in the area and are jonesing for a sandwich, pull into Lake Wine.

Yelp
Love, love, love this place! Good prices and an outstanding selection. The cheese shop is incredible, I love stopping in there for a little tidbit of something that I'd never discover at Rainbow or Lunds. We need to support great local businesses like this one. (Ryan H, you were treated badly--there's no excuse for the attitude you experienced, although it sounds like you didn't behave any better--but carding everyone in a group is common practice. Many liquor stores have a sign on the door announcing that they do this.)
google avatar

Yelp
Love love love!!! Love the cheese shop, love the wine deal, love the liquor store. Lovelovelovelovelovelovelove! I want to pack up my bags and live in the cheese shop. Coming here for lunch to get a sandwich turns into a gourmet grocery shopping experience. Cheeses, vinegars, chocolates, finishing salts -- YES. Browsing their shelves is a fun way to spend some time while they are making your sandwich. Speaking of sandwiches, they won the fancy sandwich game at (fairly) reasonable prices, unlike another "fancy" sandwich place that will not be named. The Grand Manchego basically won the sandwich game for me: Manchego, bresola, marcona almonds, arugula, house made apricot truffle mayo, white bread. ...yup. Sold. Wrap it up. Stuff in face. Great everyday wine deals (6/$36!) and a million types of beers on the liquor store side of things that you can mix and match in a choose-your-own-adventure-type 6-pack! Lake Wine & Spirits; you're my favorite. Can I move in?
google avatar

Lauren J.

Yelp
Can you say 6 for 36? This just might be the best wine deal in town. Or ever. Throw in a one stop cheese shop and parking lot and I'm sold. Just as it sounds, you can get 6 bottles of wine for $36. And they aren't $6 bottles. I mean some are, but not all. I've seen some that are originally $14. The selection is great too; multiple whites, reds and bubblies. The cheese and food part could be it's own review. I have yet to buy a sandwich, but have drooled over friends and heard amazing things. Great choice of gourmet cheeses, chocolates, olive oils, jams, honey and all things you'd want to buy with wine. The answer to those who wished there was a Surdyk's on our side of town.
google avatar

Leah G.

Yelp
Lake Wine and Spirits has THE best selection and great prices to boot. I found a Tilburgs 4 pack for $5.50; that is the cheapest I have ever seen it. You better believe I scooped it right up. They also have amazing cheeses, oh, and the best part is, you get to sample them. Cheese. Free cheese. This place makes the traffic on Lake so worth it.

Yelp
This is our go-to liquor store! It's super close to where we live and there's always parking available in the lot if you choose to drive there. They always have a wine special when you first walk-in where you can buy 6 bottles of wine for $36. We never leave without buying 6 bottles of wine! The rest of the store is very organized and they have a great selection of beer, wine, and liquor. The staff is so friendly and always willing to help. It's small, but I really appreciate how great of a job they do when packaging your purchases into a box for you.

Yelp
I have visited this liquor store many times before, but only for the liquor store. The employees here are extremely helpful! I once asked if someone could help me figure out a good wine between $10-12 that would go well with a specific meal I was cooking and they gave me exactly what I wanted as well as a mini wine lesson! I also have found my favorite tequila by asking around what I should get. They don't suggest the highest prices and even say that higher prices doesn't mean it is higher quality, super helpful! There is a large wine and liquor selection as well which makes it fun to browse! I just recently visited for the cheese shop and WOW! I didn't even know they had sandwiches, thank you yelp community! I got the Kim-cheez as recommended on here and oh boy was it heaven. It's so hard to find a really good vegetarian sandwich when I go out and now that it is warming up I've been craving sandwiches like mad! There is nothing more beautiful than how this cheese and kimchi combined into a flavorfest. The juices soaked into the bread just enough so that it wasn't soggy. Perfect little meal for $4.50. Also the cheese shop has everything you'd need for a cute little picnic or a nice simple gift for someone.

Yelp
Best sandwiches in uptown Minneapolis. Very homely and cordial staff. Good selection of wiches and cheeses. Plus a few other little gems. Unfortunately they are not open on Sundays. Note: go for the "Heidi Ho" with extra avocado. Very delicious.

Yelp
I love going to this liquor store and so do my dogs! The staff is always so friendly and eager to help you look for what you need. The atmosphere is great and it's clean. The selection is wonderful, whether you're picking up a case of domestic beer or grabbing some craft ale you haven't had in awhile, you can't beat the variety. There are always specials going on that are well advertised as you walk in. Also, if you're a dog lover, don't hesitate to bring your pooch. They're dog friendly! My pit bull and pug know the drill, the cashiers have treats! Oh, and certain staff know my pups by name, how rad is that?

Yelp
I absolutely adore this place. Lyn-Lake and Whittier hoods needed a good liquor store. The closest one to me is Hennepin-Lake Liquor where their aisles are cramped and they don't take cards (lame-o). Lake Wine & Spirits is clean and bright with many smiling faces to help. They have a great selection of beer, lots of wine and a cheese shop too (which I haven't visited yet). I'd agree with Annie D when she says it's similar to Surdyks. Definitely worth the walk. Locally owned which is always a bonus. Last time I was there the owner was working the register. Only one complaint: no limes! I was craving G&T's and they ran out of limes.

Yelp
Pick 6 for $36 wine? Yes, please! They have a great selection of wine, and the layout is very intuitive. The aisles are clean and the bottles are displayed to tempt me. Their cheese shop is even better though. Try the Prairie Breeze, it is an award-winning Iowa cheddar. Well worth the cash. And the cheese geniuses at Lake Wine introduced me to a beautiful pairing, blue cheese and The Beez Kneez' honey on a cracker. Lake Wine is genius, pure genius!

Yelp
Lift Bridge Farm Girl is my BBF (Beer Best Friend.) Only probs is though, most places you can find her in a six pack, she's warm, dusty and sitting on a shelf. Not at Lake Wine & Spirts! The amount of awesome beer varieties they keep chilly in the cooler here will melt your face off. But most of this five star review is for the super awesome little food boutique that is within the L.W&S. It would be a shame to call it a cheese shop because they also carry awesome local and imported meats, crackers, jams, pastas, pasta sauces, an amazing selection of fancy pants salt and lions and tigers and bears...oh my. Plus, dude behind the cheese counter is super intelligent and knowledgeable about an array of things. Not only did he recommend a honey to pair with my blue cheese, we spent like an hour discussion museums and anthropology. Smart guy, I tell ya. It's kind of like Surdyk's, but not far away, not super crowded and smaller, but a good kind of smaller.

Yelp
If you love wine, you belong here. Six bottles of wine for thirty six dollars, all day everyday. And it's not necessarily cheap wine either, when you're checking out you can see the original price scanned and they are giving you fifteen dollar bottles (in some cases) for six bucks. Its awesome. I have dabbled in their typical offerings and would suggest a few to anyone, connoisseur or otherwise. My favorite is the Snap Dragon Pinot Noir, they always have this one and I would never skip it! If you like something super sweet, go for the moscato, there's usually only one or two options, but the one that's actually very good has a tan label and little hearts on it that look like they belong in a scrapbook. My final suggestion is for something a little drier, there's a cabernet and a merlot by one brand that are both quite nice. It's usually right by the door as you come in, black bottles with gold netting. These are definitely the better reds offered in this deal. The cheese shop is pricey, but the selection is super interesting. Think sun-dried tomato Gouda. If you are having a house party and want your guests to think you're sophisticated, fifteen bucks spent at this cheese shop will get you to fancy pants territory, no question. The best part of selecting is all the sampling, don't commit until you've had a wide variety, they are very generous with taste testing.

Yelp
Liquor stores are usually not my favorite type of establishment to visit. To me, they either feel vastly overwhelming or seedy and sort of depressing. I'm beyond happy to report that Lake Wine & Spirits is neither overwhelming, nor sketchy. In fact, it's a clean, affordable, helpful and inspiring spot for spirits AND fancy snacks. Their "6 for $36" wall of wines changes weekly. It's a great way to try new wines with minimal financial risk. They always have a wide range of options to try! This is always my go-to for any type of party or social gathering. It's cheaper than Costco and they have a wider, more exciting selection. The staff is spectacular. They're knowledgeable about every type of alcohol. Whether you're trying to find a wine to pair with dinner or pick a 6-pack of beer for a friend's birthday, they can help you find whatever flavor or price point you're looking for. The guy in the glasses...I don't know his name, but he is always there when my husband and I come in...he KNOWS HIS SHIT. Like woah. But really my favorite part of the whole operation is the cheese and sandwich shop in the front. They have tons of cheese - goat, blue, gouda - from France, Germany, the Netherlands, everywhere. And the woman who works the counter will give you free samples so you can find exactly what you want. The sandwiches though are a dream. $5 footlong at Subway? Psh. You can get a $5 roast beef/horseradish/havarti sandwich on ciabatta bread for $5 here. No joke. Totally worth it. So whether you are stocking up for a party, or just trying to grab a bottle of wine or some olives to bring to a party...this place is a clean, affordable, yet non-overwhelming option. Lake Wine & Sprits FTW!

Yelp
The fact that this place is practically across the street my apartment is awesome - and means that I probably stop in a little more often than I should. But, its hard not to. Their beer selection is among the best of any store I've been to - as is their cheese, wine and liquor selection. It really is like four stores in one. The make your own six pack is a great deal, since it lets you try a lot of different beers without having to commit to a large amount of any one type. I also love the fact that unlike almost every other liquor store I have been to, they have the liquor right out on the open floor, instead of behind a counter where you have to ask for it. And, the ongoing 6/$36 wine deal is a great way to get some quality wines (which rotate regularly) for a good price. The prices in general are a couple bucks more than other places, but for the selection, convenience, service and cleanliness, I think its worth it. Also, if you sign up for their emails or like them on facebook, you can see their top picks from each category every week, which is a great way to get ideas for new things to try from people who actually know what they're talking about.

Yelp
Gonna echo the sentiments of Veronica A. here... Yes...hurray for an LQ on the East Side of Uptown that takes credit cards!!! C'mon we all deal in plastic these days. I really like the setup of this LQ. Huge pet peeve is when they stack things so high, you feel like you're in a corn maze trying to find your way to the Chilean wines. So, nicely done there Lake Wine & Spirits! Also, really good selection of both local and not-so-local microbrews! I got hooked on 21'st Amendment's Hello or High Watermelon Beer one summer... so refreshing for those hot summers! Also, wandering through the wine selection is fun. Lots of choices here too. Proud to have this as my local LQ stop!

Yelp
5 stars for employees! They always remember you. 4 stars for easy convenient location, and cheese selections. Gets a little sketchy after about 8:30. I've seen people escorted out who are banned from the store and continue to walk in causing trouble. 3 stars for price. $27 dollars for a 1.75 of Fireball?? Uh, no. I'll drive out to Costco and get it for $18.95. What's up with the price hike!? Wine, eh, on avg $2-3 bucks more than most MGM, Total wine, or Costco liquor stores. Overall 3/5 stars due to the price hikes. It's worth the drive to SLP liquor stores for a significant price drop.

Yelp
Has prices that rival Chicago-Lake without the seedy underbelly. Great selection of local brews. Always decent pricing on wine & liquors as well.

Yelp
6 bottles of wine for $36. It is AWESOME. Seriously. To be honest, I've never purchased anything here but 6 bottles of wine for $36. I like buying different types of wine each time, the weirder the better - Bosnian Riesling spelled "Rizling"? Yes. Bulgarian Sauvignon Blanc? Fantastic. I've never had an un-delicious bottle yet - the quality is superb. I can't buy wine at Trader Joe's anymore, knowing that there's something so much better for a couple bucks more down on Lake and Grand. P.S. I didn't get a reusable bag until my 3rd or 4th visit, so I don't know how that works. But it is pretty sweet for buying 6 bottles of wine at a time - thanks, guys!

Yelp
This is my go-to liquor store Uptown. Lake Wine & Spirits has a pretty decent craft beer selection, tons of affordable wine, and plenty of the hard stuff. Are the prices the cheapest? No, but the atmosphere of the store makes up for it. It's neat, clean, well-organized, has a great layout and a friendly, helpful staff. And there is a great little cheese shop attached. Who doesn't love that? You can get gourmet snacks and booze all in one convenient stop.

Yelp
I don't always find everything I need here, but I do always find something. Often a hidden gem, some sale wine I've never heard of, or a specialty beer I've never tried. The prices are not cheap by any means! But the convenient location keeps me coming back. The staff isn't all that friendly either- I've been followed around the store more than a few times and I'm there everyday. One of the cashiers is a bit testy... Not going to name names. Cheese shop is on point! Offering a couple of vegetarian blues and gorgs. Lots of options and specialty items. Refillable olive oil and balsamic options too. Go get yourself a sample from the friendly cheese shop staff.

Yelp
Great, reliable liquor store. Free parking on all sides of the building, which can get a little busy on the weekends. For a small store, they pack in some great options. I wish the craft beer cooler had more room around it, but that has never slowed me down! On the few occasions I buy wine (very rarely...) I love that they have easy to find wine sections and lots of helpful reviews on little index cards. I usually feel like an idiot in the wine section, so easy to find help is great. Staff is always super helpful and friendly! Cheese shop: so great!! The owners are incredibly nice and clearly have a passion for their work (cheese!). I've gotten a few sandwiches from them, all VERY reasonably priced and massive. After living very close to the Stp Cheese shop, I missed getting high quality affordable sandwiches, so happy to have this as an option. Go get a sandwich the next time you grab a 6 pack!

Yelp
Clean, well organized, and a very helpful staff! Free parking as well. Recommend! Great selection of wine, beer, and liquor!
