L'Alambic

Our favorite restaurant in Cognac region so far. We were lucky to get a table for 4 on the first day of our journey and then we took care to book in advance for our lunch later during the week. The family-run-business, they speak little English and their hand writing on the blackboard is not recognized by Google translate. But it doesn’t matter, because all the dishes are delicious and whatever you order your taste receptors will be pleased. Also, the kids loved the Steak Hache and the fries, which are not just ordinary fries but very tasty and authentic.

I would advise anyone going to this restaurant not to arrive there hungry. Although the food when they get around to serving it is very good. They kept our Party waiting for 15 before taking our order, and then we had waited at least half an hour before our food arrived. During this wait. We were denied a basket of bread. We were told we had to wait until the food arrived. We had watched bread being brought back from other tables and put back into baskets to be served again. Being kind I would say that the attitude of woman serving was unfriendly verging on rude. Trying to get anyone's attention to order drinks was almost impossible. It might be fine on other days of the week when other restaurants are open and it's not as busy.

My mum took me here for lunch when we were in Jarnac and we were pleasantly surprised by the tase and quality of food. I got the burger and my mum got the camembert, we decided to share because it was so so good. The food was warm, and the staff were very attentive, for example refilling the bread and water...

We had lunch sat outside in the sun. We can speak a bit of French and the staff a bit of English, so we managed to muddle through. Really good food and great atmosphere. We and our dog were made very welcome.

Lovely outside seating area in the sun. Plat du jour' served quickly and full of flavour..nice spot with parking just at the side.

By far the best bar/cafe/ restaurant in Jarnac. Lovely dining our front on a warm day. Superb set lunches or a la carte top quality salads steaks, etc. Affordable local wines and beers and very friendly welcoming owners. Sadly no main meals in the evening but they may do small plates of cold meats etc on request.
