The Best South Asian Restaurants in Austin

"It’s worth the trek up to Leander for the Nepalese restaurant that recently transformed into a food truck. On deck’s fantastic Nepalese, Indian, and Indo-Chinese fare, such as all sorts of momos (dumplings served with a spicy sauce, steamed, or deep-fried), as well as samosas, tandoori chicken wings, hakka noodles (chow mein), curries, and biryanis. Takeout and delivery orders can be placed online or in person; there are outdoor dine-in areas." - Nadia Chaudhury

The Best Austin Restaurant Dishes of 2021, According to Eater Austin Editors - Eater Austin

"To celebrate a recent birthday, we took the time to drive up to Leander to grab takeout from the gas station restaurant based on the recommendation of a trusted friend. Our entire spread was magnificent. The steamed chicken momos were so plump and nicely spiced (I do love dumplings a lot); the cauliflower in the Gobi 65 was sturdy; and the chicken kadai was the ideal brothy entree. —Nadia Chaudhury" - Nadia Chaudhury, Erin Russell

Google
I recently tried this food truck, and unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment. The bread was half-cooked and doughy, making it really unappetizing. The chicken curry was extremely watery and lacked any real flavor. To top it off, the momos had terrible stuffing, which was far from tasty. Additionally, the wait time was excessively long, adding to the overall frustration. Overall, a very underwhelming experience that I wouldn't recommend to anyone.

Nice dhaba environment. I love the panner kabab and veg fried rice.

I wasn’t expecting too much coming from a takeout in a gas station. But it was surprisingly good. We had 4 different dishes and all were delicious. I ordered through their website for pickup and it was done on time.

Google
Lali Son is fantastic. We've never actually been to the brick and mortar location - we always order via Door Dash. The food is great and consistent. I highly recommend. Now, this is my ONE complaint: Every time I order the Chicken Chowmein (kid friendly on door dash description), it's so spicy, I can't eat it. Only leaving this in the review because I'd like the restaurant to know that maybe the description on Door Dash is incorrect.OR maybe I'm just a baby and I should shut my mouth :)

I stumbled across this place while I was looking for a closer Indian restaurant online and decided to try it since the reviews were so good even though it’s inside a gas station. I ordered the chicken tikka roll medium spicy, veggie samosa and the buttered naan bread. The employees were very helpful, I had asked about the size of the roll to make sure it’s not the size of an egg roll and it’s the size of a regular wrap thank goodness! It was so good, fresh veggies good seasoning, it did come with a green sauce and a red. I have no idea what the sauces are but the green kinda tasted minty maybe and the red is a sweeter one (my husband ate all of the red sauce.) The veggie Samosa was medium spicy, plenty for us, they were good too. The naan bread was buttery as I ordered but are just a little thinner than I like. They weren’t fluffy like I’ve had at other places, it was more like a homemade tortilla. We will definitely be back I can’t wait to try the buttered chicken! Online ordering was super easy. I didn’t see any table and chairs inside but they did have a couple outside.

Finding Lali Son: Nepalese Restaurant has been a delightful experience as a connoisseur of diverse cuisines. The fact that it's a HALAL/حلال restaurant adds significantly to its appeal, catering to a broader audience with dietary preferences. Their commitment to using meat from Halal sources is commendable, ensuring quality and adherence to dietary restrictions. The ambiance of Lali Son is warm and welcoming, a reflection of its owner, Surya Shah. Mr. Shah's passion for Nepalese cuisine and dedication to customer satisfaction are palpable in every interaction. He is not just an owner but the heart and soul of the restaurant, often seen engaging with customers, ensuring they have a wonderful dining experience. Now, let's talk about the food – specifically, their Chicken 65 biryani. This dish is an absolute masterpiece. The perfectly balanced spices give it a unique, spicy, and irresistible flavor. The chicken is tender and perfectly cooked, and the rice is fragrant and fluffy. It's not just a meal; it's an experience that takes you on a culinary journey to Nepal. In conclusion, Lali Son is more than just a restaurant; it's a place where food meets culture, and every dish served is a testament to the rich culinary heritage of Nepal. Whether you're a fan of Nepalese cuisine or looking to try something new, Lali Son is a must-visit. Their Chicken 65 biryani alone is worth the trip!

Google
Pleasantly surprised by the wonderful food we ordered via Uber eats from here! We were craving Nepalese momos and we usually order from another place . But wanted to try this new restaurant for a change . We ordered the vegetarian chili momos (medium spicy), chicken biryani (medium spicy) and rasamalai. Everything tasted great! The spice level was so apt for us and we usually do not prefer biryani that is heavy on the masala and this one was just right with the correct amount of spices for us and really tasted good . Rasamalai was soft and well made . Chili momos were the highlight and were really good ! Will definitely order again from here or go in person to check out the ambiance and service .

Google
Excellent food. Very authentic spices. Many time spicy means more chillies, but this was different. Highly recommended. We tried the Chilli Momos (veg), Chole Bhature and chilli paneer. Edited about couple of years after my first post, food is as good as before and the flavor continues to enamor my family!! Here is my second edit, continues to be great. If you are going here, you are going for the spice. If you are going for the spice, better upgrade all the way to the "Lali Special Spice", costs a $ or so more, but worth every penny. They have moved to a food truck park from the gas station. The park itself is less than impressive, I really hope they find more success here. Disclaimer is that all food that I have had from here is vegetarian.

Yelp
Enjoyed the food a lot. Good flavors and good service. It took longer than expected to get the food.

Yelp
I was initially skeptical about this restaurant because of its location, but I really wanted to try their momos. We decided to give it a shot, and it was absolutely worth it. We had the veggie chili momos, which were freshly prepared with just the right amount of crispness. Loved it! Gave 4 stars due to its location and no place to sit.

Yelp
This whole spot can be hard to find if you're unfamiliar with the area. It sits west of HEB. It's at the Southwest corner of here away and Bagdad Road . The gentleman who helped me said I could call him Kanny he gave me his given name, but I was not sure how to spell it. He even brought my food to my car. He was very nice. Helpful in terms of giving me ideas of dishes that have been very successful. I ended up ordering a sampler. I was able to choose an appetizer. I also chose a curry then there was naan bread or roti. He told me the spice level would be somewhere between mild and medium at the baseline so I left it at that until I try their food . I really didn't want anything more than this samosas for lunch so I saved the bulk of the order for my dinner . My dinner was very flavorful. The Chicken Curry was tasty, the rice perfectly done. Light and not sticky at all! It was spicy. There was lots of bell pepper which provided some texture. I enjoyed it . The Naan didn't taste homemade- I'll have to ask if it was. Not as flavorful but it was good. Overall I enjoyed my meal and want to try more menu items. I'll definitely return!

Yelp
Not sure who was manager serving Saturday night. Very rude. I placed 50 dollar plus order and it was never delivered. He said Lali Son is not responsible and he was afraid to disclose his name:

Mauli D.

Yelp
The food was okay overall. We ordered chili chicken and steamed momos, both of which were great. However, the Hakka noodles and fried rice were just average. The Hakka noodles had a strange smell and tasted off, so we ended up throwing them in the trash. The fried rice was mediocre; I've had better at other places.

Yelp
Very tasty Indian / Indo Chinese food. We got the chicken fried rice, Gobi appetizer and a couple of chicken curries. Everything was neatly packed for takeout and the curries came with a good amount of rice. The chicken Tikka was especially very good. 4/5 star because they are stuck in a grungy gas station. I hope they can set up a real store location with dining, because their food deserves it!

Wendi J.

Yelp
Great takeout spot for Eastern food lovers. Plenty of heat if you want it. Portions are fairly generous. Naan is good. I have had chilly momo, saag paneer, biryani, and chicken tikka masala ... all were wonderful!
google avatar

Surbhi C.

Yelp
I tried different momos. They were very delicious. It is run by friendly people. It is inside the gas station store so there is no place to sit and eat. They prepare fresh so they need some time to prepare. But it is definitely worth the wait. I definitely recommend.
google avatar

Sana A.

Yelp
I was initially surprised they were in a gas station but the food is worth it if you're ever in the Leander area. I got the chicken chili momo which was exceptional, the chicken-to-wrapper ratio was perfect and it was super crispy. the highlight was the red momo chutney, it's truly the best I've ever had. The kothe momo was good to but next time I might try the steam instead, we also got the chicken wings which were good but might look to the chicken lollipop next time.

Yelp
Surprisingly great food for a small restaurant in a convenience store! I first stumbled across Lali when I was getting gas and beverages and thought "Why not? Sharks Burger started in a store, they might be just as good." I wasn't disappointed. They have fantastic Chicken Lollipops that are free from gristly and plump, plump, plump! I love the variety on the spice, too - you can get most dishes mild, regular, spicy, extra spicy, or even Lali Hot (too spicy for me, but my friends tell me it's worth a try if you're a spiceaholic). Other dishes worth mentioning that I've tried are the Butter Chicken, Gobi 65 (really nice with the Lollipops), and Chicken Korma. Price is very solid as well, with them typically being about 20-30% cheaper than most other pickup / delivery locations in the area. My only complain is quite often when I order pickup from Doordash or Uber, they often don't make the food until I get there, which means a couple of times I've had to wait an extra 15-20 minutes despite ordering in advance.

Yelp
I've been hearing a lot about Lali Son fast food so my expectations were high, and they were gladly met. One thing I will say is that I recommend ordering online and picking up your food! We ordered at the gas station and we had to wait for half an hour. Not a big deal, but there isn't much to do at the gas station. We ordered: Vegetable Samosas - They were super big and so delicious! The crust wasn't too hard and it was nice and flaky. And the filling was so good. It's not spicy but it definitely has a bit of a kick to it. The potatoes weren't too dry, but I did wish there were more peas. Garlic Naan - literally so yummy and a good texture, I didn't get that much garlic flavor from it though. Chilly Momo - These dumplings were so flavorful, I wish I was hungrier so I could have eaten more! It wasn't too spicy, but the heat does build. Chicken Saag - I ate this one too fast and I don't really remember what it tasted like, I just know that it was GOOD and that it came with a decent amount of chicken. Chicken Tikka Masala - honestly I've never had a tikka masala I didn't like so the bar here is low. But this dish was probably my favorite. It is a little sweeter than other tikka masalas I've had but I liked that!

Yelp
So glad I found this hidden gem. The food is amazing, mango lassi is refreshing and service is only exceptional. From an impatient person, I never mind the wait while food is being prepared. Love this place, hate to move further but will definitely be visiting as much as I can! Perfect afternoon snack, veggie samosas and mango lassi
google avatar

Yelp
I've been here two times and the food has been hot and fresh. On my latest visit here. I ordered the chicken lollipop and chicken chow mein. Everyone approved and liked the chicken chow mein. The chicken lollipops were good. Can't wait to try out something new on my next visit.

Yelp
Don't let the service station location fool you - this is excellent Nepali-Indian fusion fare with great service and a cute garden you can't see from the front - highly recommended.

Yelp
I LOVE THIS PLACE!! this place is ran by friendly people making good food. they were generous with portions and gave us dessert for free :') i highly highly recommend to those who love FLAVOR
google avatar

Yelp
Great food, nice staff. Food is always hot and fresh. Butter Chicken is great. It's inside a gas station but do not let that fool you.
google avatar

Vettguy T.

Yelp
Crazy thing, this place is in a f**king gas station. Food was very authentic and tasty but prices were waaay too high. You literally walk into the gas station and they have their kitchen inside of the place!
google avatar

Marci B.

Yelp
Wow. This place is amazing. The food is always good, the service is quick (and I love that I can order online) and pick up. There is nowhere to sit which is fine with me. The menu changed recently and now it's much harder to see the gluten free and vegan options which is the reason for one less star - because that's REAALLY important to me when I'm looking through menus and I'm disappointed it's gone. If I didn't already know what was gluten free I would have passed this by if it was my first visit.

Yelp
Great Indian food. Freshly made and flavorful. The sag paneer is some of the best I've had in a long time. Butter chicken was delicious and chicken 65 biryani has a nice kick to it

Eli F.

Yelp
Lali Son was very tasty. We ordered some chili momos, and some saag Paneer. The guy at the counter recommended the Gobi 65. We tried it, and it was the best cauliflower dish I've ever had.

Yelp
I am a huge Indian food fan, and I have eaten had the pleasure of being served it all over the country. In fact, I lived in the warehouse district in Omaha, Nebraska, "the Old Market", right across the street from an excellent, highly-rated Indian restaurant, and I generally ate there at least once a week, sometimes more. I have now ordered from Lali Son four times, and I have to say, it is almost as good as the restaurant in Omaha. The chicken tikka korma, and the lamb vindaloo are equally excellent. my only wish is that they served mulligatawny. The most amazing fact of all is, IT'S IN A GAS STATION! But I guess considering that we're living in the age of food trucks serving excellent food, it's not that big of a surprise.
google avatar

Megan R.

Yelp
I get the veggie Momo and it is amazing!!! I am loving it the spice and all is soooooooo gooood highly recommend this place!

Shawn E.

Yelp
Tried this for the first time today. Tried chicken tikka and chicken byriani. Both were excellent. Simosas were fantastic as well. Will definitely be going back.
google avatar

Yelp
Really good Indian food! The mattar paneer and navrattan korma are my favorites. Definitely get the momo, they're delicious!
google avatar

JR F.

Yelp
First thing is, don't be put off if this restaurant is in the back of the convenient store to gas station. The menu is quite extensive and the people they are very friendly. But it doesn't in there, the food is awesome! I got the chicken chilly and it was mildly spicy, but extremely flavorful and delicious. I also opted to get the Momos and they were delicious too. Their prices are very reasonable and the portions are huge. If you want some quick delicious Indian food, you've got a check this place out.
google avatar

Magdalene L.

Yelp
Tasty food that you can get quickly. I ordered through door dash and was impressed at the speedy service and delicious flavor. Tiki masala chicken is delish!
google avatar

Jeff L.

Yelp
First time here and got the chicken biryani 10/10. Honestly it was amazing I will be going back and ordering more than one dish. The service was fast and the people were so nice.
google avatar

Brittany L.

Yelp
I love this place! I've ordered takeout from here twice this week and each time I was more than satisfied. It's so delicious and reasonably priced! Their vegetable momo, chicken momo, and chili chicken momo are some of the best in the area. I love the chili chicken mom the most. I could eat it everyday! My husband loves their chicken curry and wings. I highly recommend you check them out! Don't let the location fool you - the food is superb!
google avatar

James C.

Yelp
Butter chicken was good and very spicy for being mild for my taste. Chicken Tikka Masala tasted exactly like the Butter Chicken, didn't mind because it was very tasty and flavorful. Vegetable Samosas were very delicious! One complaint, they forgot my dipping sauces. Garlic Naan was on point. I wish I had gotten a little more chicken with my orders, but it was enough to feed my small family of 4. I would definitely order again!

Yelp
Food has been great every time, especially the butter chicken. I really love those little gulab jamun balls.

Yelp
Very high quality Indian dining. Don't be thrown off by the fact that it's inside of a gas station. There's usually a bit of a wait because they make everything fresh. If you like fried foods, the pakoras and samosas are to die for. If you like curries, get their paneer tikka masala. The fresh naan and roti pair excellently with everything, and the raita and other sides sauces are delicious--you'll want to dip everything in them. I've gotta talk about the biryanis. For a white boy, I have had a hell of a lot of biryani. I will tell you this might be the best biryani I have found in the Austin area. They don't skimp on the ingredients. You will fully experience the star anise, cardamom pods, cinnamon bark, black peppercorns, fresh onion AND caramelized onion, and probably a dozen other ingredients--all served together with wonderfully tender meat. If it seems expensive for a gas station, do not be deceived. This is the excellent, authentic, relentlessly flavorful biryani you are looking for. For the ultimate spicy lover, get the "Extra Lali Spicy" biryani. It will certainly clear your sinuses, and the brutal spice level will make you feel cleansed and rejuvenated (if you're into that). As of writing, the Extra Lali Spicy heat level costs extra--that's because they heap the spicy magic into the dish and infuse all the heat just for you. This spice level is not for the faint of heart, you have been warned . Know that this place is not "spicy by default" and has a menu full of options for non-spicy-lovers. While this place has a humble location in a gas station in Leander, it provides exceptionally authentic and uncompromising Indian cuisine that you will not regret.

Gary R.

Yelp
Delicious! Excellent Chicken Tikka Masala and Saag Paneer! Fast and friendly takeout service!
google avatar

Yelp
Tried it based on Yelp recommendations and did not disappoint!! Only had about 10 minutes to eat, they had delicious food ready to go. Good value, excellent flavor.

Yelp
SO GOOD!! I never thought as an adult I would love food from a gas station but once I found shark burger I decided to be more optimistic when it came to trying gas station food which then lead me to Lali Son! My family and I are big fans of Indian food and we have been unable to find a good place here in Leander. Or any place. We ordered the butter chicken--YUM, along with the deep fried Momo, and some Roti. All of it was delicious. This place is the perfect fusion of culture - leaning more on the Indian side. I couldn't be more excited! I hope everyone gives this place a try

R T.

Yelp
I once order the food from here by uber eats and the food was-not so good. But the review is very good so I decided to try it from a restaurant itself. It is inside a gas station. The service was good but the pricing was very expensive. $10.99 for 8 pcs momo ? . Thats the lowest quantity momo I have ever got. The taste of momo was alright but the taste chowmein was very good. Would I go here again ? Probably not because its very expensive for the quantity of food.

Yelp
Why every hole in the wall place I tried that resides in a gas station always has the best food? I have tried many places run from a gas station and they are always good, not sure what's the connection. Anyways, I have tried their food three times in last one week, mostly got their Biriyanis. I never eat paneer but love their paneer biriyani. But there are many other things to like at this place. The best momos we found so far in Austin. We loved Veg. Chilli momos. We also loved their paneer biriyani and Goat Biriyani. Very few places in Austin will offer you an option of having indian style spicy food, they gave one which they call Lali Spaciy or Lali Extra Spicy. You guys should give that a try. There are not many places to eat outside the gas station so mostly a to go option for me, food they serve usually cannot be eat in car I guess, haha. They are also efficient, even tho they were busy couple of times I was there but they'll tell you exact time that you'll have to wait, not just a random number. Gives you an idea if you what to reconsider and go pick up Taco Bell if you don't want to wait.
google avatar

Paul R.

Yelp
What's up with this little corner of Leander? Within a 1/4 of a mile you have the original Shark's burger joint in a gas station, Farm to Fork restaurant (they are moving), Humble Pint brews and pizzas, Leanderthal distillery, and last but not least Lali Son Fast Food also in a gas station market. This is not fast food but delicious family-owned Nepalese Indian fare that is either handed to you or delivered to your vehicle. There is not an outside area to eat so it's car or home. Check out their online menu, it is pretty expansive. On my first visit I ordered: Paneer chilly Med heat Chicken and mixed Veg Curry Med heat Garlic naan Basmati rice My Paneer did not travel well but a quick reheat and the cheese returned to a moist deliciousness. The curry chicken was marinated perfectly with a spicy sauce and enough veggies to fool me into thinking I was eating healthy. My healthy order of garlic naan was perfectly done with enough garlic to get my attention. If you are in the area and got the jones for perfectly prepared Indian food you need to patronize this friendly family venue.
google avatar

Brandon S.

Yelp
I can't believe this food comes out of a gas station. It's pretty freakin good and I've been to Nepal and India. Our go to for Nepalese/Indian.
google avatar

Kat M.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious foods! Tried a few things on the menu, but my favorite is the Chicken Tikka Masala (call me basic), but it's to die for. And it's local too!
google avatar

Divya C.

Yelp
Very close to street style indo chinese and great options to choose from! Like their momos, biryani and curries as well! Only complaint is they are too far and in the middle of no where so it takes significant time and effort to go there for a Togo order
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
We ordered delivery. Food has great flavor but there was not enough chicken in the chicken tiki Marsala or the butter chicken. They forgot the utensils that we paid for extra for. We were moving my my into a retirement home so everything was packed and we needed them.
google avatar

Ryan H.

Yelp
Absolutely love it. Not sure how I missed this place for so long. Saag Paneer, Butter Chicken and Butter Naan were all excellent. I walked in to order one night and had my food within 15 minutes, no complaints. I hope at some point they can graduate from this gas station setup. The gas station itself isn't great. Best of luck, will be returning again.
google avatar

Mayur G.

Yelp
Make sure to check your order before you pick up. But great tasting food. Reminds me of the taste from india. Good spice levela
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
It's nice having another lunch/dinner choice on this end of Leander! My favorite dish so far has been the butter chicken followed by the tikka masala. Both of my visits have been good especially having a fresh and HOT meal by the time I get home! The price is rated at $$ as just an entree(meat) will cost you $10-13. I'm happy to pay it as it's fresh and authentic. My suggestion: One thing I would like to see change is the roti as the edges were a bit tough. Additionally I'm a huge garlic lover so of course, in my opinion, the bread was plain.
google avatar

Ramya R.

Yelp
It's a small place but good one ! Taste is fine but quality can be improved a bit. Since it's inside a gas station it is very accessible.

Nicole P.

Yelp
The chicken chili momos are worth an update and second review! I will definitely be ordering them every time moving forward. We have never had a bad meal from Lali!
google avatar

Tiffany A.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the food here. The lady made suggestions on what to get since I've never been there. Their vegetable samosa is the best. Thank you.
