On the Grid : Landmark Theatres

"You know how sometimes movies have a “limited release” in just New York and LA? Well, with the occasional exception of Arc Light Hollywood, this is often the only theater in LA that is showing that movie. What’s great about Landmark Theaters at the Westside Pavilion is that their offering is a great blend of lesser-known indie films with all the latest blockbuster 3-D movies. It’s an art-house theater with all the comforts and dignity of a cineplex. Definitely one of the best places to see a movie in LA." - Clever Creative

I have experienced this facility under four owners and Landmark has done a good job taking over for AMC most recently. Yes, this is similar to a rep house or smaller screen in a multiplex. This is not the theater you are going to go to watch a widescreen movie like Superman or the live action Tame Your Dragons. It's perfect for dramas and even comedies. The new seats are very comfortable but apparently are not recliners. The staff was pleasant and professional. This was my local theater when I first moved to West Hollywood over two decades ago. When the Outfest G/L film festival happened, primarily at the DGA facility down the street, this was used as an overflow space for some of the alternative programs (like international shorts).

5 screens 612 seats Father Quintana: Flood our souls with your spirit and life so completely that our lives may only be a reflection of yours. Shine through us.

The Service: Staffs are very friendly and helpful. Staffs behind the bar and concession counter are very efficient. The Theater: It is located on the 2nd floor in the plaza. Small theater but the decoration looks more high end. There are nice chairs at the lobby. Only 5 theaters and seats are bigger and comfortable. The Parking: Parking structure. They validate parking for 3 hours. Entrance on Laurel Ave.

I used to frequent this movie theater when it was operated by AMC theaters, since Landmark took over it has been renovated and has livened up the place. I love all of the special events at this location such as the Amy Winehouse Immersive experience and look forward to similar events. Don’t forget to validate your parking ticket, you get 3 hours when you visit the theater. Full Disclosure, I started working at this located July of 2024, come say hi.

Google
My go-to cinema in LA. Staff: all lovely, super helpful and friendly Theater: nice new, big seats, really stylish and sleek. Screens are really nice and picture quality is great Price: really well priced considering how good the facilities are Parking: 3hr validation - should be free with any movie

I love this theatre. It feels super homey, the staff are all really sweet. They have food and drinks. The prices are great and they validate parking. Support movie theatres!!!

Google
A great movie theater with friendly and efficient staff! Clean and comfortable auditoriums. It’s located at the upper floor of the of the 8000 Sunset Strip shopping plaza and validates I believe 3 hours of parking for the garage below the plaza (parking on Sunset!? Yes please!)

Google
Small, and awkward seating. Only went because there was a publicized event, which I was very excited for! The resrooms lacked safety signage. A guest fell and it was sad to see the lack of kindness shown.

Yelp
Love this theater...love the location, the parking garage, the ambiance, the bar and the staff. Checking in be a bit confusing. You either purchase or scan your tickets at concessions or the confusing part...there'll be an employee who you don't necessary recognize as an employee standing somewhere between the door and concessions to check your tickets. There's no set location for them and their attire doesn't scream "I work here". That being said the employees are always cheerful and welcoming. Landmark is definitely a more intimate, cozy and less hectic experience than AMC. When there's a movie I want to see Landmark is the first theater I check. Definitely check them out if you haven't already. And if you have checked them out think about putting them in your rotation. Only way theaters like Landmark are going to stick around is if there are butts in those seats.

Yelp
Validate parking and have always had a pleasant time. So much better than AMC Grove which is a hellish experience and should be closed before they ever put someone else through the pain that is their business. This is a real and professional business, unlike AMC Grove.

Yelp
Bargain Tuesday is great! $7 if you buy ticket there for a movie. They remodeled beautiful theater with a bar lounge and food!

Yelp
Was last here when it was still an AMC. I showed up recently for a screening, and decided to order pretzel bites. I noticed they weren't the same ones pictured that AMC had previously had here where they only offered mustard and not the radioactive cheese I like, so I was looking forward to this being better than the previous offerings. What I received was a dismal amount of bites which was a failure since they were priced approximately the same that AMC had. Yes, I know they are not AMC, but this was a disappointment. As for the theater, it was fine. We had assigned seating for this screening which was new, and I was stuck in the back row. Left early due to the 3-hour validated parking and it was a long movie. Picture quality/sound was okay. Probably would not return here due to the pretzel bites-of all things-but glad I tried it out as a Landmark.

Yelp
It's a nice theater but theater 2 had no A.C. at all and felt like we were in a sweat box. Validation was easy and it looks like your typical indie theater, but really, I wanted to walk out because of how stuffy and hot it was in there. Even one of the actors during the Q&A mentioned it. Hopefully they fix it.

Yelp
Absolutely love what they have done to the place. Don't like the $20 cocktails, however. Would suggest they offer happy hour earlier--starts at 8:30 p.m. now Monday - Friday.

Yelp
The Landmark recently opened at Sunset 5. I remember when this location was the Laemmle Theatre and after that it was AMC. The lovely Karen N invited me to be her guest for a special screening of Asteroid City. I had no idea what the movie was about but was grateful for the invite and the opportunity to spend some one-on-one time with her. Inside the theatre was a pop-up with props from the movie and staff were happy to assist with photo ops. Guests were treated to complimentary popcorn and soft drinks. (Wine & canned cocktails are available for purchase.) The soda machine is fancy. You touch the screen to select your beverage of choice. I was impressed with the variety of sugar free cola selections. The theatre had stadium seating, so you don't have to worry about someone blocking your view. The seats were comfortable. The movie was entertaining and featured a cast of well-known actors. If you are a fan of Wes Anderson's work, you won't be disappointed with this film. They validate parking. However, I was fortunate enough to find parking on the street.

Yelp
Complete revamp since it was taken over from AMC - full bar. Beautiful decor - highly recommend

Yelp
While my San Diego Landmark is closing down to one location and only shows indie films. This Landmark on Sunset must have been opened very recently taking over from a different theater owner, but the renovation was very nice, absolutely the vibe for a lot of movie premieres with a full bar and restaurant, upstairs level for vips, multiple auditoriums and also showing some daily blockbuster movies while still maintaining the indie landscape. Parking validation is up to 3 hours, I would say attending a special event with q&a plus reception will take more than 3 hours, so drive your car out and drive back in if you want to save $25 for parking, it ain't cheap in Hollywood for sure, but also the Laugh Factory right across the street and whatever shopping that the place is sharing the space with is enough to draw a lot of people and not enough parking to go around. That's my personal experience but definitely come back for another special event here.

Yelp
Do not get cocktails from the bar. You will find they sneak in extra charges (up to $6 both occasions). Make sure you check on your bank statements as you'll see a third charge beyond the cost of the drink and the tip you add. Only thing I can think of that might justify this charge is they didn't think they got the glass. My cocktail came in, but I returned each glass in front of the counter people directly to the bar counter.

Yelp
This month (June '23) was the theatre's grand opening after previously being run by AMC. I had been to the location before and it looks like Landmark definitely made some nice updates to the seating and decor with a vintage flare. I visited this theatre for Wes Anderson's Asteroid City Pop-up that was exclusively held at this theatre. On display at the pop-up we're various set pieces; it was super cool. My only critique for the theatre overall would have to be for the sound and video quality, which were definitely not what I'm used to as a frequent Dolby and/or IMAX movie go-er. Would go back for another Indy film.

Yelp
Cool addition to the Landmark Theatres family. They bought out the old AMC here and turned it into a theme focused theater experience. Staff were super friendly. I came for the Asteroid City pop up so everyone was in full force lol. Theater seating was cool, I did like the tables at every other seat. Only cons: - Our screen seemed small for the space. - Food wasn't that great (typical of a theater); Popcorn was great though. Pro tip: Located in shopping center where Trader Joe's is. Definitely worth visiting.

Yelp
Beautiful place with sweet people. The location is awesome too - right next to iconic places like Chateau Marmont, The Laugh Factory, etc.

Yelp
This is a really nice, remodeled movie theater. It's always clean, the seats are comfortable, and they have a good selection of concessions. They show the latest films, and the sound is very good. I'm enjoying the new leather seats as well. I do wish they would start offering some impossible nuggets at the concession stand and show more independent films as well as mainstream movies, but overall, they're doing a great job.

Yelp
I live directly across the street. I went to this theater all the time when it was AMC and showed actually entertaining films with decent prices. This place is an elitist, classist, postmodernist, woke nightmare now. They literally took everything that the average person enjoys about the moviegoing experience and decided to go the other way... kinda like the way the industry has been going for the last decade or so. I hope this place closes down really, really soon.

Wendy M.

Yelp
Nice, comfortable theater. Large cushioned seats. Decent food. Theater pricing for the food. Parking validated for 3 hours.

Layla H.

Yelp
Great theatre! I saw Alien Romulus here and the environment was nice and relaxing. I'll definitely come here again.

Yelp
the atmosphere is great seats are comfortable. the people working there are friendly and nice. and they have a nice selection of food. i think they would sell crispy cream donuts very quickly. i hope the landmark stays open for a long time. thanks for being there jack heller

Yelp
Nice theatre under new management but the ticketing system is ridiculous. You pre book then arrive and have to collect a paper ticket from the front desk which is often backed up. They don't have the tech to just let you in with your online booking. Messy, slow and annoying. Also the hot food prep takes way too long. Oppenheimer got cancelled as they didn't know how to handle a 70mm print. It burned up in the projector. No way to get a refund as booked through fandango who don't ever respond.

Robbie S.

Yelp
If you're going to charge 10 dollars for small soda and 9 for small popcorn at least offer a premium experience. The new seats here are super uncomfortable, the popcorn wasn't even hot and something was off with the projection
google avatar

Pablo M.

Yelp
Was super hyped to see Nolan's Oppenheimer. I get to the premier and sat there for 40 minutes till they canceled the showing. They said they wrapped the 70mm too tight, you'd think they would run test runs before one of the biggest movies of the year comes out. Anyway they told us we would watch it regularly and proceeded to waste another 20 minutes of our life. Never got to see Oppenheimer.

Adam M.

Yelp
So...I'm not sure if this is the case in all of the theaters at this location, but Landmark tore out the perfectly good AMC seats and put in the most uncomfortable theater seats I've ever sat in. People seated around us were also talking about the extremely uncomfortable seats. The seats literally lean you forward. They do not recline at all. There's no way to sit comfortably in them. Did no one test these seats before Lamdmark purchased them? I would not return to this theater and would advise everyone to avoid it until the seat situation is remedied.

Michele M.

Yelp
I like this theater - smaller screen rooms and the films audio is perfect. Other cinemas have audio that will damage your hearing.

JEANETTE L.

Yelp
I enjoyed coming here before it was landmark. The tickets per person are $17 dollars. The theater is old and there's nothing special for that price. My friend is disabled and the elevator is a hassle. I rather go to Ipic for that price. Maybe the extra money is needed for their remodeling.

Aditya G.

Yelp
One of the best theatres in LA. Friendly staff with great screens. We had rented the theatre for a whole week to qualify our film for the oscars and they were very cooperative in giving us their best screen and letting us do multiple tests before the screening period started. Highly recommended.

Zach B.

Yelp
travelled for an hour to see Passages (one of the only theaters in los angeles showing this film). when i got there i was told that they weren't showing it because they were down to two theaters and that they'd only be showing barbie, oppenheimer, and.... equalizer 3. don't waste your time, you might be going to a listed showtime that they have no intention of showing.

Tone F.

Yelp
If you are a disabled or an elderly person that struggles walking upstairs, do not come to the theater it is located on the second floor of a very large complex, which does not have an elevator to get to the escalators barely work so it's gonna be very hard troubling time.
