The Best African Restaurants in Seattle | Eater Seattle

"The aroma of spices and coffee will likely catch your attention as you pass by Lands of Origin’s stand in front of Pike Place Market. Serving snacks, sweet treats, and drinks from across the African continent since 2022, Lands of Origin is a fun spot to taste the flavors of Ethiopia, Morocco, and many places in between. Spiced potato sambusas and Moroccan lamb rolls are popular;if you have time, sit down for a traditional Ethiopian roasted coffee. Top it all off with a crowd favorite: the creamy banana pudding. Lands of Origin’s shelves are also stocked with African spices." - Alicia Erickson

Food was pretty good and tasty. The cornbread was my favorite!! It was SO moist and delicious. The pasteis de nata was really** crispy but I didn’t love the orange(?) note in the custard itself. Still devoured it though, it was really good. If you like orange, too, this would be perfect for you. Finally, the meat pie was good as well and came with a sauce to dip it in. This place is kind of expensive but it is in poor place market so I guess it’s reasonable.

Google
This place should have a line down the street. Delicious pastries and desserts home made by the owner. Absolutely scrumptious. You can taste the love, labor, and top notch ingredients in every bite. We had the custard pie and the Portuguese pastry. Don't be intimidated by the exotic aspect, kids and adults of any culture would love the taste. Highly recommended!

Google
Incredible pastries, tried almost everything and loved it all. Their twist on pasteis de nata with orange rind is excellent. Also highly recommend the shakshuka roll and the cone things.

Stopped by the shop as part of a coffee tour. The experience was amazing and the coffee so yummy. We tried the sambuscand they were great!! The owner was so lovely and the coffee and sambusas good that I bought a treat for later. It was a flakey cone with a rose cream inside. It was definitely floral and I could see where some people would not enjoy that part of it but I loved the uniqueness of the taste and the flakiness of the pastry was amazing. Definitely recommend!!

We stopped by Lands of Origins, just outside Pike Place Market on the brick-paved street, and it was such a great find! We tried something similar to a samosa—crispy, filled with lentils, totally vegan, and served with a bright, flavorful green sauce that tied it all together. For dessert, we had a pastel de nata—a classic Portuguese custard tart—and it was absolutely delicious. Great flavors and super friendly service in a charming little spot!

We loved all the savory pastries. My friends loved the Jamaican beef patty and I loved the lamb roll. The sweet pastries were just a tad too sweet, but really flaky and delicious 🥰 One of favorite new finds in Pikes!

Google
Went to this hidden gem on a food tour today. Absolutely amazing food! Family owned and my first time to ever try African cuisine. FANTASTIC! Definitely recommend trying this place, you won't be disappointed.

Google
Land of Origin is a solid five stars! They are my new favorite street food vendor in Pike Place Market. I have tried several of their food items and was not disappointed. My favorite is the lamb roll, it's frankly at another level. The pastry is soft and chewy while ground lamb, onions and spices fill the center. It's pure ecstasy when it hits your tongue. For vegetarians there is a yummy lentil option. Also be sure to ask for a sample of their coffee and take the time to sit and make new friends. The coffee is lightly spiced with cardamon and really delicious.

Yelp
We were blown away by the flavors here. We have tried a few Jamaican patties before and a couple of egg tarts, but none compared to the quality we got here. The meat flavors in the patty were juicy and had a nice spice, and the egg tart was perfectly warm, sweet, and creamy.

Yelp
Lands of Origin While wandering around Pike Place, I stumbled upon this charming Ethiopian coffee shop, Land of Origin. The inviting aroma drew me in, and I couldn't resist trying one of their pastries. I went for the South African milk tart (6). The tart was super yummy, with a creamy, subtly sweet filling that paired perfectly with the rich coffee. What stood out even more was the service. The worker was incredibly nice, taking the time to explain the different goods they were offering, which made the experience feel personal and welcoming. It's a great little spot to pop into for a quick pastry and coffee after exploring the market. A cozy spot with delicious treats and friendly service.

Yelp
The Mozambique style pastel de nata was very very tasty! Would definitely come back to try more! All their vegetarian options were sold out for savory items unfortunately but I want to try them!

Yelp
We came here as a part of the food tour, and I was pleasantly surprised with the food here. I loved the Jamaican meat pie, and I returned after the food tour to buy more. I also got the fried Moroccan lamb rolls to go. Both were rich in flavors, and the spicy sauce that came with them complemented the flavors so well. They also offer Ethiopian coffee ceremony which I will try one day!

Yelp
Came around 4 PM on a Sunday and there was practically no one there. I waited for a couple in front of me, who was being helped by an incredibly friendly worker who was explaining to them what the different items were. I was interested in the savory items, and I got the peri peri chicken bun. It was served warm and had quite good flavor! I'd definitely get it again and try some of their other items.

Yelp
Oh my gosh! This place is an absolute gem in a market packed with tasty shops. We had the Jamaican meat pie - what a delicious kaleidoscope of flavors. Kelly (?) behind the counter was also so kind and welcomed us in from the rain. 10/10 would recommend.

Yelp
I mean shut the front door on these egg tarts. I lived in China and ate these daily, have to say this is not maybe but it's a must try this place if you are at pike market!

Yelp
Was passing by and saw that they have Portuguese egg tarts! Portuguese egg tarts in an African bakery! I just had to try! I must say I was not disappointed. It is a bit expensive but what do you expect from Pike Place Market?!
google avatar

LARA S.

Yelp
What a delightful shop! OMG the cremosas are divine! Not overtly sweet. Just the right amount of sweetness! Glad we passed by as they are in the row of shops directly above the market place. Stop by and see and taste for yourself. It's amazing!

Yelp
Amazing place!! So much better than Piroshky Piroshky! Egg tart is out of this world. Creamy and a little fruity. The best we have had. Our second favorite is shakshuka roll! 10/10! Service is extremely friendly too!

Yelp
Visiting Seattle for the first time and my friend loves food from many countries in Africa. So the country of choice was Ethiopia. We got Sambusas with amazing sauce. My friend also got a pastry with curd and I got a dish that had pine nuts on top. Everything was seasoned very well.

Yelp
Wow! We were walking by and saw that this establishment sold pasteis de nata - a Portuguese custard tart that we have been dying to try. We got two and they were incredible. A phyllo dough-like crust, with a custard that had a hint of lemon. YUM! We could have gotten at least 10 more. The next time we're back in Seattle, we'll definitely stop by again.
google avatar

Katie G.

Yelp
We tried a handful of things from this shop and they were all delicious but I think the shakshuka roll was my favorite!
google avatar

Yelp
Custard tart Is The best thing we had all day. Smell was amazing and tart was crunchy and soft. Very creamy . Refreshing:) also seating to enjoy desert. Customer service super nice

Yelp
The best pastéis de nata I have had outside of Portugal. Lovely people and fresh flavors from around the world! I came back for a second round. You will be full of joy

Yelp
Wondering around the market and passed Lands of Origin. Ordered 3 pasteis de nata and a Jamaican meat pattie. The service was attentive and friendly. I will dream about these pastries. Will probably go back for more tomorrow morning. The shell is flakey and buttery and the filling isnt too sweet and has delicious hints of orange and cinnamon. The meat pie had a flavorful filling and the dough is delicious and not too bready. The cilantro sauce on the side was herby and bright. Definitely recommend trying it out. These are items you wont find many other places. You aren't really an adventurous foodie if you don't sample your way around the world!

Yelp
YUM YUM YUM. Discovered this place while on a Coffee Food Tour and wow. From seeing their coffee roasting process to tasting a lentil sambusa with their jalapeño cilantro sauce. YUM. After the food tour ended, we immediately went back to their location and ordered ONE-OF-EVERYTHING, well, we did order 4 of the custard tarts. Everything was delicious and so grateful to have such a fun experience and to support a small business. Thanks so much!

Gavin K.

Yelp
I had the Moroccan lamb crispy bun. I have to say it was amazing! It was crispy on the outside, but very flavorful and mouthwatering with the spiced meat in the inside. This is a place I'd definitely recommend going to impress a friend with culturally diverse food

Yelp
I love Jamaican food (Ackee and Saltfish is amazing), but the first time we dropped in to purchase from Lands of Origin the Moroccan lamb and Jamaican meat pies were incredibly oily. To the point they soaked through the brown bags they were packed in. Although the service was friendly both visits, the flavors didn't really sing together and weren't consistent. My first pie was more flavorful but more oily, and my second pie was less oily but bland with the breading taking over. Sadly, it looks like Lands of Origin is just not my thing.

Yelp
Omg what a gem to find in Pike's Market! Masti the took care of us, and boy were we spoiled! We had the lentil samosas (I had to get a second one They were so delicious) the Moroccan lamb pastry, shakshuka roll (which I would've gotten a second one of as well but we luckily got the last one) African meat pie, and 2 different types of custard tarts from Mozambique, one warm and one cold. Honestly, every bite was so delicious, full of flavor, and if wasn't so full, I would have had seconds of everything! And the Ethiopian coffee that she paired it all with was exceptional. We can't wait to come back soon!

Yelp
Had an Ethiopian sambusa. Delicious. Amazing flavors and spices. Highly recommend checking them out.

Sarah T.

Yelp
My initial thought was "wow that egg tart is overpriced." But after one bite, I immediately said "worth it" and I consider myself a cheapskate. lol To put in perspective, I grew up eating a lot of egg tarts. I've made my own and I've tried the top two egg tarts in Hong Kong/Macau/Japan. I dare say this egg tart rivals the famous Lord Stows. Maaaaybe even better! Life's short. Eat the egg tart. (I think they called it custard tart.)

Yelp
OMGOSH...we were so happy to find this place! Not only did we thoroughly enjoy their swoon-worthy Pasteis De Nata, but also had the loveliest of conversations with Chef Meeraf, who was so personable and genuinely cared about our experience. Highly recommended if you love food and nice people.
google avatar

Yelp
Pasteis de nata is the real deal. Crispy flaky crust and delicious filling. Get them before they run out.
google avatar

Hieu T.

Yelp
Definitely have it fresh or right when you buy it. Flavors are great and very well balanced. Textures go well with the flavors and compliment the experience.
google avatar

Parris L.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place while walking around Pike Place and they had Pateis de Nata! These sweet tarts are so hard to find I feel like (ones that are actually good that is). I had them in Europe on a trip and I will say these were SO good, if not better. I'll have to stop back and pick more up on my way back home to Portland!

Katelyn T.

Yelp
Amazing pastries that are made from scratch daily. Not sure which pastry is my favorite as I almost tried them all. Each exceptionally delicious in their own unique way! Definitely a place to check out! Can't forget the wonderful service!
google avatar

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
Make sure to stop by! Masti is so kind and knowledgeable. Meeraf is an amazing baker, she spends so much time and care in testing her new creations! The Portuguese custard tarts, Moroccan lamb rolls and lentil sambosas will change your life. Do yourself a favor and stop by!

M E.

Yelp
Jamaican meat pies are amazing with the cilantro sauce. Pastels de Nata are a must try!!
google avatar

Christina H.

Yelp
Delicious surprising find in the market. This place is next to the big cookies place. I sampled the meat pie- Yum! The lam bun... it's doughy and lamb, onion, and spice mix is surprisingly good. When you are in the market, check out this place!

Andrea B.

Yelp
Best service and good definitely recommend the Jamaican beef meat pie and Cremosa along with the lamb rolll
google avatar

Amy C.

Yelp
The people here were so lovely, and the lentil samosas (which were vegan!) knocked me over they were so good. We went back for a second round 12/10 recommend!!!

Kristina T.

Yelp
There are so many delicious treats here. The staff is super friendly and helpful in describing the items. We had the Cremona cream horn, Portuguese egg tart and the panko cake. All I can say is WOW! You Can taste the quality ingredients. So fresh and delicious. If we lived here we'd eat there all the time. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Great place for hand portable eats at the market! This stand is a spin off of Geni's Ethiopian food stand that is frequently at various farmers markets. Specializing in all sorts of hand pies, pasties and hot pocket type snacks from various parts of Africa and the Afro-Carribean. Staple item there is the Jamaican beef pie which is amazing! Ethiopian Sambusas are the other staple which is excellent with their green sauce. They have other types that are sort flavor or the week ones that I have tried like the chicken peri peri also really good with their sauce. They also offer an array of spices so you try your hand at making some African foods at home.
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
Wonderful mom and pop service. The Moroccan fried lamb bun was absolutely wonderful, and the green chili sauce they serve with it is a perfect pairing. Wish I lived in Seattle so I could eat there more!
google avatar

Suzannne L.

Yelp
We visited Lands of Origin during a guided "Coffee Crawl" through Pike Place Market. This was our favorite stop on the tour! The coffee was absolutely delicious, the Jamaican meat pie we sampled was amazing, and the obvious love and care for the customs, culture and coffee truly shined through in the presentation made by the owner. We will definitely be back!!

Thea C.

Yelp
Best coffee!! Was such a great experience seeing how Ethiopean coffee is brewed!! The staff were very friendly and such a beautiful establishment!!!

Leanne P.

Yelp
We ordered the custard tart along with the banana pudding. Both were absolutely fantastic! The banana pudding had such a lovely flavor and was easily the best banana pudding I've ever had. The custard tart was warm and had a nice crust. The service was incredibly friendly! This establishment is relatively new but I have no doubt that people will notice the wonderful pastries they bring.

Ravenna S.

Yelp
the lentil samosas have me in a chokehold!! i can eat them every day! The two women working are so nice and welcoming, i love it
google avatar

Jazmine P.

Yelp
Amazing food! Great service! I had the lentil sambusa you can't go wrong the flavors are phenomenal!

Deborah S.

Yelp
Love this place! I stop by when I'm in Seattle, recently tried the beef Sambusas and they are wonderful!! Check out the desserts, you can't go wrong.

Sarah D.

Yelp
I love that this place has a permanent stall at the market now, it's been a great place to grab meat pies at the weekly farmer's market.
