"Langenstein’s has been making excellent prepared food to takeaway since the family owned grocery store opened in 1922. With four locations to serve, the store dishes a changing menu that might include stuffed mirliton, ribs, potato salad ,and po-boy sandwiches.Muffalettas and boiled shrimp are two more options." - Beth D'Addono

Great neighborhood grocery store selling local products along with name brand items. Great quality meat here.

Always a good place

If u want some great local groceries or the best local lunch food made fresh, made right, made frozen for eating later, this the place to go. Easy parking, in noit, etcetera.

Google
Horrible DARK HOLE of a building. It's like a Bourbon dive bar atmosphere with some overpriced groceries on the shelves.

When I lived in New Orleans, this was my very favorite grocery store. Small but packed with great stuff that you can’t find in other places. When I go back to Nola to visit, I always shop there. BEST ITALIAN SAUSAGE ANYWHERE!!

Google
I recently made a mistake while ordering and selected the wrong day. Thankfully, the customer service team promptly corrected my error, ensuring I received my order on the intended day. Their efficiency and willingness to assist left me delighted with the overall experience. Langenstein’s saved thanksgiving!!

Stopped in for laundry detergent while on a road trip. Prices weren’t the cheapest, but it’s not a big box retailer. It feels good to support local! Selection was limited, understandably. The meat counter staff was a little snippy, but the rest of the staff was very kind and helpful. We didn’t want to drive across town to a Publix or Trader Joe’s, so this did the trick.

Great convenience store in the residential area on the Arabella Street. Has a good choice of items

Yelp
had an affair with the milkman environmental friendly and fresh groceries, especially the berries

Yelp
A small cute local grocery store tucked off in Uptown. The staff is great but this store is very small (about 1/5 the size of typical grocery store) so items you want may not be here. What they do have is fresh and good. Their ready-to-eat meals are excellent with a good selection.

PrissyM E.

Yelp
My daughter & I love the food from here! We ordered the steak plate that came with a baked potato & a dinner roll. The perfect dinner

Yelp
I have about 5 or 6 groceries in my monthly rotation and this is one of them. It is a small store but it has ALL the essentials. And I can find instant cream of wheat here which I don't see in other shops. What brings this to 5 stars? The seafood market. It is not inexpensive but they are careful with their refrigeration and I consistently find good quality fish, crab and shrimp here. The manager is super nice and I've talked to her about specialty orders but haven't pulled that trigger yet. The takeout food is good to great. And they usually have a variety of items. It can get pretty crazy just before a big holiday. Their produce is good and the store is always well stocked. There is plenty of parking too!

Yelp
I live in New England but have visited New Orleans many times in the past and will do so in the future. The extreme scarcity of king cakes in my area led to calling Langensteins last year about having a king cake mailed to me. I initially was told that they typically only FedEx orders, but they agreed to mail this semi-perishable item to me. However, they ran out of that seasonal item. They agreed to mai,one this year. I looked forward to this all year and repeatedly praised Langensteins over the past few weeks. The store reiterated the promise to mail one this past Friday but asked that I call today, I called the same person to whom I had spoken all along only to be told that she would not mail it. None if the managers at the three stores would mail the cake. I know that the president and the chief operating officer received my repeated outreach, they chose to ignore it. Store and corporate leadership still refused to accommodate me after learning of the tangible ill impact on my health. as to this easily avoidable aggravation. This reflects the patterns of previously "folksy" businesses still presenting themselves as such but being very corporate and of each successive generation of leadership of a family business operating in an increasingly less customer-oriented manner.

Yelp
I chose to move to my current house in part because of its proximity to this Langenstein's, and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. You can find just about anything here, catch up a bit on the local news, and be in and out in about 10 minutes if you want. The people of Langenstein's feel like family, they could not be nicer or more congenial. They are folksy and just plain fun. You can be having a bad day, walk in, and after one of the employees asks you if they can "help you find something, my ladybug?" your heart just swells and you leave smiling. There's nothing like their crawfish monica or stuffed mirliton, and their produce is impeccably fresh, and they carry items you might not find even at bigger stores - leeks, and fennel, rainbow carrots, and heirloom varieties of grapes in season. Add in the super fresh seafood section, and a small but tasty selection of wines, and you are all set. This is a truly local institution and a jewel of the community.

Yelp
THE UPTOWN VERSION OF ZARA'S And while I prefer Zara's slightly, there would be a huge sadness in my heart and void in my gut if either of those institutions closed. The butcher is pretty legendary, the best take-out shrimp remoulade in New Orleans is in their extensive prepared foods area (does anybody else remember "sugar busters?") and the classic logo on their handled brown paper bags is even better than when Melinda Schwegmann's face adorned her grocery chain's bags during her failed 1995 gubernatorial bid.

Emily W.

Yelp
Rude employee. Only two customers in the entire store at 8:00AM and she was determined to stack her vegetables at the same time the only customers there were stepping around her to shop. She would not step aside to give us access to the shelf. She admonished me for setting my hand-held basket down and hurried me along trying to bag my vegetables. Just move out if the way and let us complete our shopping!!!!!!! There are too many grocery store choices to be hassled by the staff first thing in the morning!

Paul B.

Yelp
The ONLY place in the entire Jeff/Orleans parishes you can actually buy FRESH ((NOT FROZEN) Fish, Like 1960's Retro. And Bonus, Wide variety such as Des Allemandes wild catfish. Even fresh Speckled Trout, As I say 1960's Retro.

Debi S.

Yelp
I LOVE LANGENSTEINS ! Miss Diane the manager of the uptown store is amazing. She is so friendly and sweet, goes well beyond to be helpful for her customers. I have shopped at this store for over 40 yrs, best grocery store in N.O. and will continue to do so.

Eureeka S.

Yelp
The Uptown area would not be as quaint & sweet without this affordable little mainstay of a neighborhood grocery store. I hold a special place in my heart for Langenstein's. I trust the store with their great fresh meat/fish selections. For those people who don't cook, a large prepared foods section can be found here. A hot bar has recently been added, as well. For a small store, I think that many of their prices are competitive with Winn-Dixie & Rouses, while boasting a variety of grocery options, plenty of staff to handle demand, & a good bit of available parking spaces. Whether shopping for the week or just picking up 1 item to complete a recipe, I always have a positive experience at Langenstein's.

Yelp
The best grocery store in all of NOLA for prepared foods. No doubt in my mind!!! The variety is incredible and the selections you can't find elsewhere are awesome- goat milk ice cream for example!

JP L.

Yelp
A friend told me about Langenstein's. Had my first visit today. I will be back and will add additional pics.

CAROLYN W.

Yelp
Shocked to discover they sell shrimp from Indonesia!! Yes, the large raw are supposedly local but three other choices, including cooked, are foreign. You wan US to buy local, yet you don't. Shame on you

Bethany F.

Yelp
Had a crawfish boil. Needed some turkey necks cut (that I didn't even purchase from them). They did them without a complaint or attitude b/c I didn't purchase them there. Super helpful. Very nice. I'll be back to purchase items!

Tim C.

Yelp
Wish I could give it 6 stars. Got crayfish their and the normal vacation supplies. My kids nd I Loved the crayfish so much I had to walk back, 2 miles, on two different days to get more. This will be a must do every year.

Cyn B.

Yelp
Boutique grocery with the best in-house made soups, grits' grillades, Better Cheddar, and Popeye dip in NOLA. I've been coming here since I was a child. Once years ago my aunt and I ate their corn soup for weeks for lunch trying to figure out the recipe. Those who live close by are SUPER lucky to have this little luxury. I miss it indeed! Once small tidy bit, they ship their in-house made foods. Yup, a small part of NOLA can be enjoyed by those who miss it. Every once in a while I'll ship a tasty treat off to one of my brothers as a happy. Stop in and check them out if you haven't yet!

Yelp
You know how normally you walk into a grocery store and are immediately lost, scrambling, and running into people? You know how normally it takes forever to shop because you can't find the damn pasta aisle? Well say goodbye to all that hassle, and welcome to Langenstein's Grocery. Situated in the heart of Uptown (right by the Jewish Cemetery), this quaint little spot is not hard to get to, and parking is never an issue. Immediately upon walking in, I was reminded of the small grocery stores you find in Europe. It's a comfortable space with all items that one could possibly need for the kitchen. Every brand sold at Lang's is quality. You don't have to dig/search aisles to find the most quality flour or most sturdy foil, because all of the brands carried by Lang's are top-notch. They may not have some things, like obscure flavored Mayonnaise and colored Ketchup--but I think the absence of these items, in many ways, is a plus. The DELI IS AMAZING. They have all sorts of meats, all without preservatives or fillers. I'm telling you, from pastrami to honey turkey, the meats are FANTASTIC. They also slice house-made or Boar's Head cheeses for you, and have an abundance of flavors of those as well. The little tin-foil packages of casseroles and spaghetti and other frozen meals at Lang's are also mouth watering! I babysit for a family that swears by the red beans and rice, the chicken enchilada casserole, and the chicken spaghetti. All of these homemade dishes are fresh-tasting and made right. The ingredients are right on the outside of the box, too, so you know what you're in for. Unlike many casserole/dinner dishes at other delis, these are hearty but won't weigh you down with cheese/mayo/butter, etc. They are PERFECT for busy moms with a family to feed, and also... relatively CHEAP. Ah, the lovliness goes on and on at this little family owned grocery, and I've never seen a rude person walk through the doors. It's as if the grocery store itself is a small community where you know you'll find what you need and eat happy. Cheers to you Langenstein's!

Yelp
I like the location and proximity to St. Charles and Tulane University. Good neighborhood store for the folks around there that need household items and food quickly. I come here when I need good cheese, and I am heading to a party Uptown. The Better Cheddar is outstanding. Today I went for a king cake and was very pleased with my selection.

Yelp
Definitely my go-to store in Uptown, it's small and not always the cheapest for cupboard staples but as long as you're not looking for anything too exotic you'll find it at Langenstein's. However, where they REALLY excel is prepared and local foods. Making Jambalaya? You'll find great quality ingredients at Langenstein's including outstanding Andouille, Tasso, mutlple options for par-boiled rice, etc. - or you can pick up a container to go for $4.95/lb. Cheap? Not necessarily. Outrageously priced? No. Trust me, you'd be hard pressed to make most of their soups, gumbos, pastas, or anything prepared for much less at home - and then you'd have to have a great recipe as well as the skill and time to make it as good as Langenstein's. It's easier for me to walk to Zara's but there is very little in that store that I really trust, it's about equidistant to shop at Whole Foods but there you just don't get the local selection or feel. Langenstein's is a great shop to have in the neighborhood and even if I lived further away I would still come here for many items to cook with or even prepared foods. It's definitely worth checking out.

Shannon S.

Yelp
The prepared foods here are four and five stars all the way while the grocery selection is more of a three star limited selection at higher prices. The location is next to the Jewish Cemetery and its an old fashioned style smaller market with a decent assortment of produce and nice collection of local New Orleans foods. The butcher and meat department really does some excellent work and this is great place to get your carnivorous needs cared for. This place definitely has a lot of unique NOLA charm to it that you just won't find at many other larger stores.

Elise D.

Yelp
Too bad that the whole family-owned business thing comes with an inflated price tag... this place is more expensive than Whole Foods! I used to live across the street from dear Langensteins, and while it's a good place to pick up emergency supplies and last minute ingredients, I cannot recommend it for all shopping needs. Unless price is not an issue, that is.

Gayle C.

Yelp
I used to get their cooked steak, but they used a smoke flavor on it, & once I had to return an entire inedible steak. What's $10 bucks for one cheap cut inedible steak???

Melissa E.

Yelp
I'm sorry to say that I was disappointed in my visit to Langenstein's Uptown, especially since I like the Old Metairie location so much. I tried the location in my area because I think it's important to shop at a local business. However, the selection is low, the prices are high, and the check out girl didn't even look me in the eye, much less greet me. On the upside, the butcher is friendly and helpful. In the future, I'll drive a little further from home and go to Rouse's on Tchoupitoulas.

Alex T.

Yelp
Can't go wrong here. Local neighborhood grocery with everything you need and even more when it comes to prepared foods. Their specialty prepared foods is really what makes them great. Gumbo z'herb, Watergate salad, stuffed mirliton, amongst many other classics are all done to perfection and make for quick tasty meals when you have time to cook (or even when you have time but just can't do it as good as they do). Fried catfish and boiled crawfish are just some other favorites of mine. Definitely give them a try if you're going shopping and want to bring home something with a little more local flair.

d'Auria G.

Yelp
It's rare to find a family-owned grocery store these days and this one, nestled between houses, really inspires that warm, fuzzy feeling. They boast some of the best spinach dip I've ever had. Not the best option if you're looking to stock the upstairs fridge, basement fridge, garage fridge, and deep freeze in one trip, but perfect if you need to "run really quickly to the grocery store" to pick up a few things or if you're on your way to the fly or the park and need a great picnic smorgasbord.

Sam 'Wags' W.

Yelp
Makin' my groceries, the old time New Orleans way.

Connie K.

Yelp
Been shopping at Langensteins uptown for 40 plus years. Not sure what is going on but the past year it is obvious Langensteins does not care about their customers...,. Most of the new faces come and go, none of the same staff, just a few! New employees seem unhappy, and disengaged with the customer! Deli employees are uninformed and really disinterested in customer service. I have had to bag my own groceries every time. No thank you , no common courtesy....... really worse then shopping at big stores!!!! I keep coming back for the same few employees who are still there but Langensteins is making it more and more obvious they don't care. I Never see anybody who seems to be in charge? It is a total different place! Very sad at the decline, I hear lots of people complain just hope someone sees this and realizes their customers are noticing!!!'

Bill R.

Yelp
I love this store. Staff is always very polite and helpful. Great place to try some new food items. Carry a very diverse selection of locals meats and treats. I am not a local but I love going with Miss P when I am in town. Only store I have ever entered through the back door and felt totally welcome. A must visit when you are in New Orleans!

Smoky B.

Yelp
Gotta tell ya, this place is so awesome it makes me ximbledeebee in my firmenarbles. I gotta tell ya though, can't find any possum in here for love or money. Asked the butcher about some quality possum, and he just looked at me like I had smoked bath salts. Which I had. Thing about possum is, you gotta feed it plain squash for a few days after you catch it. Lord only knows what they be eating out there, especially if they've been in Mafalda's trash can.

Ashley D.

Yelp
I would give this place zero stars if I could. I've never been to the Arabella location, but the other two locations are horribly run. For a family owned and operated business this place surely doesn't care about family. They treat their staff horribly, threaten to fire you if you're sick or have a family matter to attend to. You are expected to still come in even if you are scheduled to be off that day. The food constantly comes with a side of food poisoning because no one cares about freshness. They use to have an amazing young lady who worked in the bakery section at the Metairie road location. She helped me find things many times that weren't even in her section of the store. Anytime I came in she was always hard at work. She prepared fresh donuts for me while I shopped on many occasions. This store needs more employees who care about the customers. But that is hard to find when the company doesn't care about its employees.

Margaret D.

Yelp
Langenstein's gets my 5 star vote. I purchased a king cake to carry back home to Boston. When we cut into it, we discovered there was no baby Jesus hidden in the cake. I called the manager of Uptown store, not to complain, but to find out what happened. She told me I had bought a "Saints" cake, was extremely nice and offered to send me not one, but two, traditional cakes as a consolation. No cost to me. She was gracious and generous. Cakes on the way! Can't get that kind of service elsewhere.

Vicky L.

Yelp
This place is about 5 aisles of a regular supermarket that i've been to. But they do have a good selection of food, but all in small quantities. Perfect for myself. It's easy to find, lots of parking out front, even though i don't have a car. The groceries are a bit pricier than what i'm used to, but maybe because it's a small New Orleans grocery store, versus the prices i'm used to paying in California. I'll definitely be back to get more groceries.

Russell W.

Yelp
Langenstein's has supplied me with brunch supplies on a countless number of occasions. It 's refreshing to visit a market where you feel welcomed as you check out, rather than feeling like you are kicking the employee's in the shins (I'm lookin at you, Rouses!). Plus it's right next to an old jewish cemetary, in case you are into that whole buy-groceries-and-read-tombstones thing.

Ryan W.

Yelp
This is a great grocery for getting alot of the local fare that might be out of style or difficult to obtain elsewhere. You'll find great jems like Daube Glacee here and few other places.

Julian V.

Yelp
It's cool to shop local. It's really cool, actually. But this place is TINY. I won't lie, I got sucked in by the awesomely designed paper bags. You should visit it at least once, but the selection is truly slim pickins.

Todd S.

Yelp
Convenient neighborhood grocery store. Not a huge selection, but amazingly every time I run there to buy something I absolutely need, they happen to have what I want in the store. Prices are on the expensive side, but they are not outrageous and not gouging. For a small convenient store, I have no complaints. The staff are delightful - always ready to help and answer questions. If you ask where a product is, they don't say "aisle five dude," they lead you right there. Very nice.

David K.

Yelp
No need to face the combination of sloth and wrath (slrawth?) at Winn Dixie - or the mayhem at Whole Foods - just wander into this ancient family grocery and take a look around. Fresh head-on shrimp, great meat, the best ham in town, minimal produce selection (but generally decent stuff) and a large and bizarre assortment of canned goods. Very friendly staff, and a liquor store on the other end of the block - what more could you ask for?

K M.

Yelp
My favorite grocery. They could do with more organic products but they stock crunchy all natural peanut butter, which, in my book, practically makes up for anything. They also provide student discounts which never ceases to amaze me. I love you, Langenstein's.

Allison R.

Yelp
Langenstein's is a great place to go for local and specialty items. Also, their frozen gumbo and turtle soups are delicious. They are great for a stop in just to pick up some shrimp dip, or for every week shopping. You may also run into a star or two!

Chris C.

Yelp
A wonderful family run store. I'm always amazed how many items that they can offer in a relatively small building. They have a great selection of delicious prepared foods including great gumbo, etouffee, seafood dips, etc. Convenient, reasonably priced, friendly, and great prepared foods.

Student A.

Yelp
I really like their prepared foods, EXCEPT for the meat at the end of the first aisle. The rotisserie chickens are not completely cooked (I wish they would bring back the smoked chickens, which were much better) and the mini hamburger patties made me and my husband sick last time we ate them. We contacted the business, and then didn't buy them for a while again until yesterday. They were so overseasoned that I could not eat them, which made me skeptical about their freshness. I am all for making good use of everything, and regularly buy marked down foods, but I don't want to be getting sick off of old beef. I had to throw the patties away. I won't be going back anytime soon, which is sad, because I think they have the nicest cashiers, and my preference is to support local business.
