Långholmen Hotell, a Design Boutique Hotel Stockholm, Sweden

"Långholmen Hotell is housed in a 19th century prison building on Långholmen Island in Stockholm. It offers free parking and unique prison cell rooms with flat-screen cable TVs and free Wi-Fi access. The modern rooms at Hotell Långholmen retain many authentic features. All have parquet floors and are equipped with a laptop safe and a work desk. An attractive atrium gallery dating from 1866 is situated in the middle of the complex. Stockholm's most captivating prison museum is open daily, and guided tours are given at weekends. The hotel is located in a relaxing park environment with jogging tracks. Långholmen Wärdshus Restaurant offers contemporary Swedish cuisine. The old prison entrance hall now houses a 24 hour cafeteria. Drinks are available at Finkan Bar. Hornstull, with its bars, restaurants and metro station, is a 10-minute walk from the hotel. A beach is located 100 metres from the hotel." - My Boutique Hotel (en)

A sick and disgusting concept: to make fun of the prisoners who were detained here for years in inhumane conditions and for reasons that were at that time considered as crimes but are actually basic human rights, like being homosexual, having an abortion, etc. Would you imagine an hotel in an old concentration camp that would make fun of the people who were imprisoned in the exact bed you are sleeping in? There is even a fake and supposedly cute guillotine in the mirror of each bedroom: how nice to make fun of people who were literally beheaded!

Stayed here for 2 nights in a bunkbed room with my husband. Really cool hotel where your room is a cell. The room was small, but the use of the small space is used well. The details are also really cool, like the mirror that looks like a guillotine. We had a Cesar salad from tbe bar menu, which was delicious, but unfortunately never made it to breakfast, since the beds were just too comfy. The location is great, just a 15 ish minute walk to the closest Underground/ Tbana stop "Hornstull". Definitely recommend staying at least once! |Ps. Pretty sure the place is haunted, for people who are into that type of thing..

Given the convenient location, it is excellent value for money; just a ten minute walk to the Tunnelban (underground metro) station at Hornstull (Lines13/14) where there is also a bus stop for the express coach to Arlanda Airport. Alternatively, it is a picturesque 30min waterside stroll to Gamla stan (old town). Being a former prison, the hotel itself is quirky and unsurprisingly the rooms (cells) are 'compact' but spotlessly clean and well thought out. All staff are extremely helpful and attentive to needs. There is a small lounge area at reception where drinks and snacks can be purchased, or a 2 minute walk through the complex to the main bar and restaurant. The buffet breakfasts are to die for (for me, the highlight!); a wide selection of cooked (bacon, eggs, pancakes), yogurts, fruit, cereals etc and Scandinavian (pickled herring, cold meats, cheeses etc) plus different breads and even homemade Nutella! There is also a small museum (free) about the history of the prison. If you are arriving early/departing late in the day, secure baggage storage is willingly provided.

Winter in Stockholm is rarely super great - wet snow or freezing rain is definitely not uncommon - but the former prison island of Långholmen delivers regardless of the season. During the summer the island is a green oasis and you can go swimming basically just by stepping out through the main 'prison' doors! The hotel and the hostel retain the old prison interior but, of course, everything is tastefully modernized. Our hotel 'prison cell' (double compact) was tiny but neat and spotless, including the surprisingly spacious bathroom. Complimentary wifi worked mostly ok but the TV remote batteries were pretty much flat (didn't matter for us enough to ask for replacement). No facilities to make coffee or tea in the room but there's a communal kitchen available. Breakfast was included in the price and boy, some breakfast it is. Top notch, with extra super yummy stuff like almond butter and Långholmen special hazelnut spread! Attentive and kind staff all the way, too, so our winter stay was excellent value for the money. The prison theme is obviously very noticeable (understatement) but it has not been maxed out into a freak show. Much of the very dark history of the island is well documented and available to the guests today. There is also a small museum opposite the reception that's worth taking a look at.

Coming here in October wasn't the best time for the hotel or Stockholm, but I nonetheless had a pleasant stay. First of all, the building. It is incredibly unique for a hotel and was also the first time I have ever entered a previous (or existing) prison. The format of the rooms, completely embodying the previous prison, was really cool. The only downside that resulted from this was the room size. They were a little small, and the desk wasn't a complete rectangle, and a little impractical. The bed, however, was comfortable, with enough space, and everything was clean. I can't complain that much about the space, because I chose the cheapest option, but it was smaller than what I was expecting. As for the location, it is not bad. Its island had next to nothing to do. There is a football field nearby, but I am unsure whether that is available for public use. The restaurant adjacent to the hotel is actually very good and had a great lunch special when I went there (169 SEK). In order to get to central Stockholm, I took the electric scooters that are scattered nearby, which took me around 15 minutes, and was very cheap. There are plentiful restaurants nearby, as well as a gym where you can get day passes (only in person). I did not make it to the museum, so I cannot comment. The breakfast was less than thrilling. The eggs I had (which was my biggest complaint) were very runny, but also laden with butter, so they were super heavy. Not the way you're supposed to make eggs. The rest of the food wasn't bad and had a pretty good variety.

Ok by now you should have read this is a converted old Prison, so rooms are cell size. However the design is really good with our room using one and a half cells, also had a large window. It is very clean and we saw plenty of staff keeping up the standard. Bathroom well equipped. The hotel is a bit of a walk from the nearest metro, there are a few bars on route to the metro. The bar in the hotel are hotel prices but nice place. Breakfast was very nice, lots of choices with some different flavours too. Breakfast was very nice. Eat what you want and when done Return your tray/plates, this seems common in Sweden, or well the ones we went too. There is a nice quite feel to the hotel and the Christmas decorations really made this place lovely. The in house museum you can past away the time for an hour or so, quite small ask the receptionist for the door code. Bring your OWN KETTLE and brew kit as none in room

Well maintained, super clean. A little on the austere side but I guess that is in line with its history. 10 minute walk to many restaurants on Södermalm.
