Langley Castle | Best castles to stay in

"Built in 1350 and previously home to lords, ladies, viscounts and earls, this is one of the few medieval-fortified castle hotels in England. Now a luxury 4-star hotel, it’s been carefully beautifully restored, retaining every original feature – exposed stone walls, tapestries on the walls, oversized fireplaces and four-poster beds. Beautiful castle, now a hotel set in pretty grounds. We had a morning coffee in the lounge. This was cost despite being huge. Resplendent in a regal red, it had several seated arrangements which were very inviting. Menus showed several options for afternoon tea as well as lunch. Downstairs allowed a peep into the formal dining room. Very luxurious with white linen table clothes. Id definitely love to book for dinner. The staff were very friendly and obliging.

Perfect location for our event st Durham CCC, walking distance actually. Check-in was easy and quick, castle is fascinating as a hotel and keeps it's character as well as modernisation where needed eg in rooms. My room was perfect, warmer than id thought too (room 6). Staff helpful and looked like they enjoy there jobs too! Didn't see the ghosts...

We've recently enjoyed a 3 night DB&B stay at Langley Castle. The Castle and grounds are beautiful. Our Castle view suite was spacious with a very comfortable bed, a great en-suite and nice and clean. The food was imaginative, flavoursome and well presented and a nice drinks, wine and cocktails list added to the dining experience. The staff without exception were friendly, professional and a pleasure to meet. On Thursday evening some were put to the test but came through with flying colours. A problem in the kitchen lead to a slow service. We took the view we had no other pressing engagement to get to, we were sat in a warm pleasant environment and had a nice glass of wine to sip on. The food duly came and was delicious. Well done to all involved. We will be coming again sometime thank you

I wish I could give this hotel a rating higher than 5; the accommodations, service, and staff are excellent. The attention to detail and sense of professionalism is outstanding. It is wonderful for a romantic get-away or for weddings. The dining room is also excellent. The chef and the staff should be complimented for their menu and wine pairings. Well done. Situated 5 miles south of Haydon Bridge, the castle has an interesting history. It was finished in 1364 and burned in 1405 by troops of Henry IV, who were campaigning against the Percy family who owned the property. The property exchanged hands - between the crown and private owners - for centuries. It was bought in 1882 by Cadwallader Bates in 1882. The work was completed in 1912. It was converted into a hotel in 1986. This is a special place. Highly recommend, I would happily stay here again.

Stayed here for a few day after a trip to Edinburgh a few years back and I still think about it often. My husband and I wanted a relaxing Christmas and that is exactly what we got. We had to walk up a million steps to get to our room but someone helped us with our luggage. Our room was beyond gorgeous and our entire stay was filled with lots of delicious food and treats. Food on Christmas was an indulgence unlike any other and we spent the rest of the day reading in our cozy quiet room. Absolutely perfect for us and I would recommend to anyone.

The location and surrounding countryside are beautiful, and the staff are genuinely friendly and caring. The restaurant food was very good, though portions could be larger considering the price. A ighlight is the free castle tour, great and endearing experience! Our room, in one of the side buildings, was spacious, quiet, and comfortable. Some of the decoration of the castle felt a bit “theme park”, and certain areas are clearly still very wedding-focused (understandable, given the castle’s history as a wedding venue). Overall, despite these minor drawbacks, I would definitely recommend a stay here, and want to give a big shoutout to the employees.

Visited with friends for afternoon tea. The food was outstanding, so much food we had to take some home with us. The staff were just the absolute best and couldn’t do enough for us. We had the most phenomenal afternoon in beautiful surroundings. Would 100% recommend to anyone. Big shoutout to staff Tracy and Aiden. An absolute credit to the company.

Hi. Stayed to celebrate our 42nd wedding anniversary. No acknowledgement on arrival despite staff being made aware prior to stay. Very disappointed with this. May be a small card? Go the extra mile it's never crowded is my motto. Staff were friendly and engaging. Tommy made us feel very welcome. Focus needed on refurbishment of castle view rooms. Flagged up the clogged up shower head. Bathroom sealant needs replacing. Tv not smart and relies on sky tv input. Meals were excellent . Perhaps as flagged by others offer condiments on the table and add coleslaw to the burger meal. Purchased a castle bear to take home. Castle tour excellent. Kind regards to all

Yelp
All the food here I ate was delicious. I would suggest you try the pheasant dinner. It was the highlight of our culinary experience.

Yelp
I stayed in a castle view room 12 years ago and a castle room just now. If you can afford splurge for the in castle room. The bed was so comfortable, the blackout curtains were perfect. The meals were perfection, the grounds were beautiful. The peacock was the only noise we heard through the thick castle walls. I wish they had warned us about the large group they were serving for breakfast at the same time as our chosen time, we would have selected a time before or after had we known, breakfast was a 25 minute delay from seating to getting drinks.

Yelp
Very happy that we stayed here three nights in the off-season (November, 2022). Great base for exploring the region and wonderful place to return to after a long, wet day. My wife loves a castle, and this one lived up to her standards. Other than enjoy the solid breakfast we did not dine on site but others around us did so and were quite satisfied. Staff were expert and responsive and the Castle is in excellent condition. Would stay here again if given the opportunity.

Yelp
What a great hotel, if you always dreamed to be in a castle this is the place to be, the rooms are huge (I forgot the name of my room) and the bathroom was modern but yet with the same structure that the Castle would offer. The attention to detail is amazing, the personnel is so friendly I forgot I was in a expensive hotel so they made my days enjoyable, always willing to help. The restaurant that they have in the back left me speechless, granted is expensive but you only live once. You can see peacocks walking around the premises. I recommend the tour that they have in the mornings because the views in the top are breathtaking. I would definitely come back again.
