Langley Castle | Best castles to stay in

"Built in 1350 and previously home to lords, ladies, viscounts and earls, this is one of the few medieval-fortified castle hotels in England. Now a luxury 4-star hotel, it’s been carefully beautifully restored, retaining every original feature – exposed stone walls, tapestries on the walls, oversized fireplaces and four-poster beds. I wish I could give this hotel a rating higher than 5; the accommodations, service, and staff are excellent. The attention to detail and sense of professionalism is outstanding. It is wonderful for a romantic get-away or for weddings. The dining room is also excellent. The chef and the staff should be complimented for their menu and wine pairings. Well done. Situated 5 miles south of Haydon Bridge, the castle has an interesting history. It was finished in 1364 and burned in 1405 by troops of Henry IV, who were campaigning against the Percy family who owned the property. The property exchanged hands - between the crown and private owners - for centuries. It was bought in 1882 by Cadwallader Bates in 1882. The work was completed in 1912. It was converted into a hotel in 1986. This is a special place. Highly recommend, I would happily stay here again.

Arriving at Langley Castle is certainly a wow moment, our room did not disappoint. We’d booked afternoon tea - very disappointing, the bread was stale. We were told to arrive in the Drawing Room 30 minutes before our pre-booked dinner time. 20 minutes after our arrival we were asked if we wanted a drink and given the menu’s, the wrong menu, this was not the fine dining we’d booked. When mentioned to the waiter he said it was the correct menu and the prices didn’t mean anything!. 30 mins after the time we’d booked for dinner we were shown to our table, the wine we’d ordered was left, unopened on our table, good job it was a screw cap as we had to open & serve ourselves. The food was not good, my partners starter, mushroom, spinach & pinenut bruschetta, arrived minus the spinach and pine nuts!? My main course, mushroom, steak & ale was far too salty. What a huge disappointment. We mentioned this, this morning but unfortunately the Receptionist was at a loss what to do, she said the menu had been switched, why weren’t we advised of this! To make matters worse, when we got back to our room, the invoice had been emailed to us and we’d been overcharged for the afternoon tea - they charged us for 4 instead of 2 & at the wrong price! We were also charged an excess for our cheese.

Recently stayed with our 2 dogs in a superior room in the Castle View rooms. Website advertise themselves as being dog friendly and the room had dog beds and a bowl in the room on arrival. There is an additional charge of £30 per dog when staying.||Room left a lot to be desired. Furniture was worn, marked and generally in a poor condition. I would expect that the additional charge for having dogs was to enable a more thorough clean between visitors, but this doesn’t appear to be the case. The room we stayed in was not particularly clean and there was dog hairs in the dog beds and what appeared to be stains up the walls in more than one place. ||The castle itself is beautiful and a fascinating historic building. I genuinely enjoyed the opportunity to view this and to have the opportunity to eat there. Unfortunately, dogs are only allowed in the drawing room and whilst I understand this, it is less than ideal. When eating breakfast, we had to endure other visitors exploring the drawing room and other visitors walking past coming or going from their rooms in the castle. ||The breakfast itself was mediocre and I would have hoped for better. I had to go to reception after 30 minutes of waiting to request that our orders be taken as we had not so much as been offered drinks. We ordered breakfasts for our dogs which never materialised and being on a different level to the dining room, there was no one we could flag down to correct this error, nor were we asked whether everything was to our liking.||I suspect that if staying in the castle with no dogs, our experience would have been very different. Unfortunately, with dogs, I would not return and in future when stopping over en-route to visiting our daughter in Scotland, we will be staying elsewhere.||I am sure my comments will be passed on to the department heads as appears to be the standard response. I noticed from the display however that the hotel received a number of awards up until 2017 but nothing since. I can only wonder what changed at this point, as it appears clear the standards used to be such worth of awards.

Visited for the Gin Tasting evening and had an overnight stay. |Checkin was fast, easy, friendly, and informative. We had a problem with our room, and we were moved to a new room without any fuss at all.|The dining experience was everything we had hoped for, and the service was impeccable. Each course of our meal was tasteful and beautifully presented. All the different gins were explained to us as they were served, and we were never rushed. The following day, after a great breakfast, we went on the castle tour, which was very interesting.|Overall a fantastic stay in a beautiful historic castle hotel with staff who really know how to treat their guests. Thanks to each and everyone of them who work so very hard and who are at all times pleasant.|We would hope to visit again in the future.|

Very comfortable stay in a period castle. Great food for vegetarians too. Service is great. Staff is cordial and cooperative. Beautiful ambience. Great view from top of the castle. Very near to a part of hadrian wall Vindolando.

Lovely castle with great accommodation and dining options if you’re looking for ye olde experience. Note; very Limited rooms in the castle itself. We booked online only to find out our room was actually in another building when we checked in. Very disappointed as it was not clear on the booking site. The grounds are lovely, the tour around the castle was very interesting and our guide was fabulous. Dining was okay, not an exactly high end, but enjoyable enough.

We stayed two nights in one of the Castle View Superior rooms, bed & breakfast. It was a lovely relaxing experience. The Castle View rooms are located in the castle grounds in an old and attractive stone annex courtyard. Peacocks (hens and chicks) were roaming around during the day. Very quiet at night, as the road next to the castle is not too busy. Plentiful wildlife including owls and birds of prey in the area. The room was enormous, more like a suite, and had accessible features in the bathroom such as two sinks. We could easily have stayed in the room all day, but we visited Wallington Hall and Hexham while we were in the area. There are walks from the grounds to explore and the general character of the castle is grand and impressive without pretention. Staff were attentive, friendly and helpful without exception. Breakfast was well presented with a good variety of options included. We enjoyed a relaxed dinner that was good value and high quality, but the main highlight was of course the castle itself. Overall, we enjoyed our stay, welcomed the ability to charge our EV overnight, and we are already planning a return next year.

Not our favorite spot in the area. The rooms are comfortable but don't expect to stay in the castle - more like a castle view. The food was less than spectacular and the service was lacking. Our orders were all wrong and the dinner situation is bizarre. You place your order upstairs at the bar 20 minutes before you are taking downstairs to the dinning room and there is clearly mis-communication with the staff. Would not recommend. Spend your money and time elsewhere.

Yelp
All the food here I ate was delicious. I would suggest you try the pheasant dinner. It was the highlight of our culinary experience.

Yelp
I stayed in a castle view room 12 years ago and a castle room just now. If you can afford splurge for the in castle room. The bed was so comfortable, the blackout curtains were perfect. The meals were perfection, the grounds were beautiful. The peacock was the only noise we heard through the thick castle walls. I wish they had warned us about the large group they were serving for breakfast at the same time as our chosen time, we would have selected a time before or after had we known, breakfast was a 25 minute delay from seating to getting drinks.

Yelp
Very happy that we stayed here three nights in the off-season (November, 2022). Great base for exploring the region and wonderful place to return to after a long, wet day. My wife loves a castle, and this one lived up to her standards. Other than enjoy the solid breakfast we did not dine on site but others around us did so and were quite satisfied. Staff were expert and responsive and the Castle is in excellent condition. Would stay here again if given the opportunity.

Yelp
What a great hotel, if you always dreamed to be in a castle this is the place to be, the rooms are huge (I forgot the name of my room) and the bathroom was modern but yet with the same structure that the Castle would offer. The attention to detail is amazing, the personnel is so friendly I forgot I was in a expensive hotel so they made my days enjoyable, always willing to help. The restaurant that they have in the back left me speechless, granted is expensive but you only live once. You can see peacocks walking around the premises. I recommend the tour that they have in the mornings because the views in the top are breathtaking. I would definitely come back again.
