Proper English: Exquisite English Country Hotels

"Though it’s not strictly a country house hotel — the town of Horley has grown up around its three-acre grounds — the 16th century Langshott Manor offers country-house atmosphere by the spadeful. The Elizabethan architecture no doubt contributes to that sense of peace and quiet, all beamed ceilings, mullioned windows, and great heavy doors that are particularly conducive to privacy (and deep sleep)." - The MICHELIN Guide

"Though it’s not strictly a country house hotel — the commuter town of Horley has rather grown up around its three-acre grounds — the sixteenth-century Langshott Manor offers country-house atmosphere by the spadeful. Imagine if <em>The Tudors</em> took place just a few miles from Gatwick Airport, with a bit less Jonathan Rhys Myers, quite a lot less violence, and much better food, and you’re most of the way there. More literally, if you’re in London, you’re most of the way there — the capital is less than an hour’s drive away." - Tablet Hotels

We had a really long layover at Gatwick, and this was a truly delightful place to spend the night. It was just a short taxi ride from the airport, and we got a very friendly welcome from the young woman at the front desk. Our rooms were very cosy and attractive, and I loved the big bathtub in the bathroom. We had dinner from the bar menus while seated outside in the very pleasant garden. The food was outstanding. I loved the parsnip soup, and the French fries were honestly some of the best I've ever had. Breakfast was very nice, with a lovely variety of cereal, dried fruit, juice, yogurt, and pastries on the counter, and several options for hot breakfast. I will absolutely stay here again the next time I need to spend the night on this area.

Very disappointed overall. Firstly though, I must commend front of house Amy , who was an absolute credit to the place. Smiley, helpful and went over and above at all times. Unfortunately the rest of staff let the side down. Guess this comes from.a complacent manager who wandered around turning a blind eye to afternoon tea plates left outside from day before and dinner plates and glasses from the night before. If no one is 'managing' then its no surprise staff were so slow. Drinks were fetched out without being on a tray, dirty plates ignored and dirty ashtray outside on dirty table full of bird muck. Housekeeping not great....fake plants on restaurant tables so full of dust we had to remove it from table. Grounds are very small and website deceiving. Bar area was tiny and very depressing looking. Two nearest pubs weren't up to much, so if you plan a one night airport stay and get a cheap deal, its ok. Definitely not wedding venue or luxury break material.

We stayed for one night in the Leeds Suite for our wedding anniversary. All of the staff were friendly and helpful and looked after us really well. The room was a bit small but quite cosy, dominated by the very comfortable four-poster bed. The afternoon tea was very tasty and filling. The dinner menu was a bit limited. It could do with 2 or 3 more options each for starters, mains, and desserts. The food was, however, nicely cooked and well presented. The wine menu had plenty of choices, but I'd like to see more English wine options. The Mulbury dining room didn't have a great atmosphere. More could be done to dress the tables and the room better. Improvements to the lighting would make a difference. The quality of the furniture in the bar, lounge, and dining room was a bit disappointing and not in keeping with the extensive Tudor oak panelling within the rooms. It felt out of place with the surroundings of the building itself. The bar didn't have quite a few of the advertised drinks. Breakfast was served in the Mulbury room. Options were quite limited but the service was very good. Some small improvements would make this a great, rather than good, place to stay.

We went to Langshott Manor for a cream tea for my mother's 93rd birthday. Our party also included a soon to be 5 year old girl. The whole experience was wonderful. The hotel itself is lovely and very interesting. The staff could not have been more attentive and the was food excellent. In fact as far as the youngest was concerned, the chef knocked it out of the park. We all had a really lovely time, especially the birthday girl and would like to say thank to Rebecca, Cicil and the Chef for making it such a special occasion.

There was a lot that was nice about this hotel, but the lack of hot water in the room and no action taken to remedy the situation while we were there leads me to rate it at 3. Also no wifi. The room was dog friendly costing an additional £20. Apparently this is to fund the placing of a dog bed, bowls and extra cleaning. We took our own dog bed and bowls and I’m not sure what extra cleaning was needed on a solid floor. The room was separate to the main building and the only way to contact reception was via a QR code (WiFi not working ) or by going across the garden and car park. Not ideal when you’ve just run a Bath which you’ve discovered is cold, at 9.30 in the evening. Nevertheless I went and was told that if the water was cold next morning we coukd change room (we were checking out next morning). The receptionist said she would email the manager who was not available. Next morning no hot water. No manager. We had to pay - no breakfast or other gesture offered. An apology and we were told our room shoukd have been changed… my husband contacted the manager who was unavailable until the Monday morning (!!!!!) and he refunded us about 1/3 of the cost of the room.

Stayed for 1 night before flying on holiday from Gatwick - had a great experience, and location just 10 minutes from the airport was very convenient. Room was spacious & clean with a very comfortable bed & large bathroom. Dinner was a highlight - perfectly cooked steak & everything we had was delicious without being overly pretentious. Would definitely stay again. Only minor downside was there was an adjoining room & could hear guests talking in the next room through the door but wasn’t a huge issue.

We had a fabulous overnight DBB at Langshott on Monday. After reading some of the reviews on here I cannot believe we were staying at the same place as them! ||We had a lovely welcome and every member of staff we met was helpful, friendly and attentive. Our suite (Savill) was delightful, clean and extremely comfortable. The only thing that could have improved it was instructions for the coffee maker and a fridge in order to have fresh milk and cold water. I really dislike those little milk pods.||The food was absolutely delicious. Club Sandwich, coffee etc on Terrace. Delectable Lamb and Chicken for dinner in the Mulberry followed by a Parfois and Cheese & Biscuits. Along with a very reasonably priced and delicious Merlot. Breakfast was equally good.||Obviously we were blessed with gorgeous weather which enhanced our experience as we were able to enjoy sitting outside watching the ducks and ducklings. I must admit that after our dinner when we moved to one of the bars to finish our wine we were the only people there so no atmosphere then. However should we have wanted another drink there was someone on hand to provide it. I think many of the diners were who were staying had early check outs as they were flying the following day.||We were a little surprised as to how small the grounds were - can’t see how there is the 3 acres claimed on the website as it only took us 10 minutes to walk round. They also looked a little unloved and there was little colour at the back of the Manor. It is also fair to say that the Manor is now surrounded by modern housing but we still enjoyed this little historical oasis!

I recently went for a weekend and was blown away by the Manor's elegance, beauty, and tranquility. I stayed in one of their Cosy Double rooms which had ample space. One could eat breakfast or dinner in their restaurant or otherwise order room service via a QR code in the room. The grounds are beautiful if one wanted a wander or quiet place to have a glass of wine and read. It would be easiest to get there with a car however one can get to/from the local train station via Uber or Cab. Staff were lovely and friendly as well. Truly one of the nicest places I've ever stayed. I hope I have the chance to come back!

Yelp
Stayed here our last night in the UK. Close to Gatwick Airport. Langshott is a 16th century manor house turned B and B and restaurant. A very cool place with tons of charm, history, beautiful gardens and great food. If you like historic properties, you will like Langshott. Got there in the late afternoon after visiting Stonehenge. A nice gentleman came out to the car and helped us with our luggage. We booked about a week in advance which was late notice so we didn't have a choice of rooms. We stayed in the Scotney Room which was still very comfortable and had an extra large bath with a clawfoot tub. The room overlooked one of the many gardens. After drinks, we enjoyed a multi-course dinner in the Mulberry Room which was excellent...top notch service and food. We had breakfast there the next morning before heading to the airport. We went continental due to our time constraints but they also offered hot breakfast items as well. Again, great service and a nice selection of breakfast items. We are pretty picky travelers and I must say we really liked this place. It's the perfect place to stay upon arriving at Gatwick or the day before leaving.

Yelp
I don't know why I've waited a few weeks to review; I guess it's taken some time for me to settle on an impression. Yes, the grounds are absolutely beautiful. For the price, I'd expect a little nicer rooms. We had the Anne Boleyn suite, and at first glance it's gorgeous. Turning on the lamp, we noticed it was filled with spider webs. All of the tchochkes in the room looked cheap, and were pretty beaten up and haggard looking- not quite like heirloom items- just old and busted. I pulled back the drapes to take in the gorgeous view of the moat, and the curtains down below looked as though they had been chewed on for years by the vacuum cleaner. It was impossible to reach room service; luckily the kitchen was right outside our building's door, so I just went down there and ordered for myself. Also, we were only given 3 coffee pods (and I have no idea how old the non-refrigerated milks were sitting out). By the time I figured out how to work the coffee machine, I had gone through all the pods. I just don't think it's worth it for an airport stay. Maybe if you need a pretty backdrop for photos, consider it.

Yelp
I was looking so forward to visiting this hotel and the descriptions looked awesome! I booked it in April, but the day we were to check in... while we were at the airport, the booking company said that the hotel was not going to honor our booking. I called the hotel and they SAID they never received the booking. I had a confirmation number from them, but they refused to honor it. This ruined the end of a lovely vacation. I don't know what their problem is, but not honoring a reservation and letting people know ON THE DAY we were to arrive is bad business. Things like this do not happen in this day and age. No offer to make up for the mixup.

Yelp
Went for Sunday lunch with my 95 year old mother-in-law and had a terrific time. The food was very good and beautifully presented and the service just right. I asked for the low level music in the restaurant to be turned down a bit more because of my mother-in-law's hearing aid and they immediately turned it right off which was brilliant. Elizabethan Langshott Manor is near to the m23 so easy to get to, in a beautiful setting Absolutely perfect - I highly recommend.
