Proper English: Exquisite English Country Hotels

"Though it’s not strictly a country house hotel — the town of Horley has grown up around its three-acre grounds — the 16th century Langshott Manor offers country-house atmosphere by the spadeful. The Elizabethan architecture no doubt contributes to that sense of peace and quiet, all beamed ceilings, mullioned windows, and great heavy doors that are particularly conducive to privacy (and deep sleep)." - The MICHELIN Guide

Stayed for 1 night before flying on holiday from Gatwick - had a great experience, and location just 10 minutes from the airport was very convenient. Room was spacious & clean with a very comfortable bed & large bathroom. Dinner was a highlight - perfectly cooked steak & everything we had was delicious without being overly pretentious. Would definitely stay again. Only minor downside was there was an adjoining room & could hear guests talking in the next room through the door but wasn’t a huge issue.

There was a lot that was nice about this hotel, but the lack of hot water in the room and no action taken to remedy the situation while we were there leads me to rate it at 3. Also no wifi. The room was dog friendly costing an additional £20. Apparently this is to fund the placing of a dog bed, bowls and extra cleaning. We took our own dog bed and bowls and I’m not sure what extra cleaning was needed on a solid floor. The room was separate to the main building and the only way to contact reception was via a QR code (WiFi not working ) or by going across the garden and car park. Not ideal when you’ve just run a Bath which you’ve discovered is cold, at 9.30 in the evening. Nevertheless I went and was told that if the water was cold next morning we coukd change room (we were checking out next morning). The receptionist said she would email the manager who was not available. Next morning no hot water. No manager. We had to pay - no breakfast or other gesture offered. An apology and we were told our room shoukd have been changed… my husband contacted the manager who was unavailable until the Monday morning (!!!!!) and he refunded us about 1/3 of the cost of the room.

We had a fabulous overnight DBB at Langshott on Monday. After reading some of the reviews on here I cannot believe we were staying at the same place as them! ||We had a lovely welcome and every member of staff we met was helpful, friendly and attentive. Our suite (Savill) was delightful, clean and extremely comfortable. The only thing that could have improved it was instructions for the coffee maker and a fridge in order to have fresh milk and cold water. I really dislike those little milk pods.||The food was absolutely delicious. Club Sandwich, coffee etc on Terrace. Delectable Lamb and Chicken for dinner in the Mulberry followed by a Parfois and Cheese & Biscuits. Along with a very reasonably priced and delicious Merlot. Breakfast was equally good.||Obviously we were blessed with gorgeous weather which enhanced our experience as we were able to enjoy sitting outside watching the ducks and ducklings. I must admit that after our dinner when we moved to one of the bars to finish our wine we were the only people there so no atmosphere then. However should we have wanted another drink there was someone on hand to provide it. I think many of the diners were who were staying had early check outs as they were flying the following day.||We were a little surprised as to how small the grounds were - can’t see how there is the 3 acres claimed on the website as it only took us 10 minutes to walk round. They also looked a little unloved and there was little colour at the back of the Manor. It is also fair to say that the Manor is now surrounded by modern housing but we still enjoyed this little historical oasis!

I recently went for a weekend and was blown away by the Manor's elegance, beauty, and tranquility. I stayed in one of their Cosy Double rooms which had ample space. One could eat breakfast or dinner in their restaurant or otherwise order room service via a QR code in the room. The grounds are beautiful if one wanted a wander or quiet place to have a glass of wine and read. It would be easiest to get there with a car however one can get to/from the local train station via Uber or Cab. Staff were lovely and friendly as well. Truly one of the nicest places I've ever stayed. I hope I have the chance to come back!

I booked a DB&B package for my husband's 70th birthday and whilst it looked nice on the pictures I was actually quite cautious in my expectations given the good value package price. However, we were blown away by the hotel - stunning setting, beautiful building, spacious room which was spotlessly clean with a huge bathroom, lovely and warm, lovely bed linen and pillows. On arrival the receptionist immediately congratulated my husband on his birthday and when we got into the room there was a lovely cake and card on the desk for him wishing him a Happy Birthday. Wow! Our evening meal in the restaurant was excellent quality and presentation - one of the best meals we have had in a long time. The drinks are expensive, but we expected this, and the wine was delicious. Overall it was excellent value for money and we had a wonderful visit. I would definitely recommend!

We held our wedding meal in the beautiful private dining room at Langshott Manor. The service and care to ensure we had the perfect day from start to finish was excellent. We must give a special mention to Li Anne who provided the most fantastic care and support from our very first visit to the day itself and to Jen who ensured all our requests were met. The food was lovely, service was great and our overnight stay for us and all our guests was brilliant. We can’t thank the team at Langshott enough for making our day so special.

We booked to stay here on Good Friday and when we arrived we were gutted. The first room we were given was filthy, there were marks on the bed sheets and chunks of grout missing out of the bathroom walls as well as broken floor tiles so we quickly asked to be moved. When being showed another room in the ‘luxury category’ the Seymour room the receptionist couldn’t even get the door open and when she did it was extremely stiff so no way I was staying there. We was then offered the king Henry room which was going to cost us to upgrade but at this point I didn’t care. It was a long awaited date night away for our anniversary from the kids and I just wanted to start enjoying it so we agreed. No little than five minutes after getting in the room I was again met with marks all over the bedding, one looking like blood. The bed frame (which is the show point of the room) had thick dust all over it to the point I videoed my finger gliding across and you could see the dirt. There was confetti pieces left on the floor and pieces of hair where it looked like it hadn’t been hoovered and the table on the balcony has all the paint peeling off of it. At this point we grabbed our bags, I went back to reception to get our money back and we left. Although we got our money back it completely ruined our night and anniversary as well as using up a child care night for nothing and the journey to and from price. There was no sorry or accountability for the stress and upset it put us through and by the end of it we had no choice but to drive home. Really really disappointed and can safely say we will never been returning or recommending.
