The best thing overall is the atmosphere and the drinks … I arrived directly at opening time to a closed business and when someone did arrive I had to wait several more minutes for them to open, which I extended much grace about but what really irritated me was waiting patiently to only have access to the bar and no food due to the kitchen not opening until 5? Sucks because I wanted the whole experience and not just drinks. Additionally as a first timer , there is no set cocktail menu as advertised online… I looked before I came specifically to avoid the frustrations I experienced here and nothing was as everyone said in previous reviews on here unfortunately , if you come here be prepared to explain what you like to drink or what drink you want specifically!

I’ve been here three times. The have decent happy hour specials. But Overall, I didn’t like my food. Tried the jerk wings, crab cake and The oxtail dinner. The oxtails were $26 total, which is crazy overpriced. My food looked nothing like the dish online. It also didn’t taste well. When I had the jerk chicken it wasn’t good either. I wanted to support throw place because it’s black owned but they really have to step up their service and the quality and consistency of their food.

This tiny little bar that could. Years ago, the very enthusiastic family run bar was the place to be. Time and apathy have taken its toll. But the neighborhood won't allow this bar to close. Pored drinks are excellent depending on the one bartender mix drink knowledge fade fast. The kitchen had closed for the day but has a tradition of great food.

Went here on Saturday. The food and staff was excellent. Usif our waiter was great and very tentative. We ordered the Fried chicken wings, oxtails and salmon and grits. Best salmon cakes and grits I ever tasted. We were just in awe on how great all the food was that we asked to meet the chef to tell her personally and thank her for such a wonderful meal. We will definitely be coming back here. Truly a hidden gem!!

Where do I start. The bartenders are super friendly. It goes downhill from there. I had to change my order three times because the kitchen was out off almost everything. They were out of chicken wings for goodness sakes. I ordered a mixed drink and had the same problem. They did not have the liquor they needed. If I went back I would stick to beer and snacks. Do not go expecting a full meal.

Local dive bar, there are no strangers here. Great spot to unwind and chill after a long day at the office. The bartenders are very nice and personable, able to make any type of drink you would request. The food can be a hit or miss depending on who's in the kitchen. The jerk wings are a good bet, they are very flavorful with the right heat. I usually order oxtails which are pretty tasty. Eat, drink, relax and enjoy at Langston.

Whenever a new restaurant pops up, you have your reservations about it. Hence, when I found out that I was going to a non chained restaurant, I was hesitant. Never heard of this place but I went any way. And SO glad I did. The food is amazing. This place is one of those places were you can actually go on a date or double date and enjoy the atmosphere and the company of whom you are with. From the moment we open the doors, we were greeted. From the moment we ordered, we were asked " Is everything ok?" Great customer service and great food and the interaction that you experience with the owner is a thing of the past but has been brought back to life with this establishment. I can see this in restaurant becoming more than what it is and I wish the owner God speed and much success.

A classic local spot where you can watch the game and enjoy some classic soul food. You can order ahead and pick up (or get delivery through the apps) or come and sit at the bar , where you're guaranteed some food conversation

Ordered at 530 pm said it would b ready 12 to 14 minutes cane to pick up. Not ready at 6 waied now 616 still waiting told it was boxed but not terrible service

We caught them on a bad night but the staff worked hard to please all 7 of us. We were forewarned that a new chef was rushed in for the day. The food was late but all enjoyed their meal except one of us. I'd return just for the hospitality because I know this trip was an anomaly!

Ask for chef Jeff. Please don't get the two chefs mixed up. This particular chef is very passionate about his roots and food. He has the most inviting spirit and makes you feel at ease when visiting this establishment. His salads are delicious as well as his traditional dishes OX TAILS, jerk and curry chicken . I challenge y'all to revisit and go for the food made with love n experience

This review is for the Langston's at the golf course. I made a seperate location request but somehow Yelp attached it to the resturaunt a block away. I hold a lot of meetings at the local schools in the area. When it was time for lunch, one of the teachers told me to try the grill by the golf course. When I walked in I immediately sensed that this is a local hangout. PRO's: Super Cheap Food, family atmosphere, breakfast served all day. CON's: None

I provided very clear instructions that I wanted no sauces on the food or on the side. They restaurant did not follow those clear instructions. The chicken wings have NO seasoning. I swear they taste like the batter consists of flour and nothing else. I purchased the "baked" macaroni and cheese. I know my mac and cheese well enough to tell it wasn't baked. They also use really gross cheese in the macaroni. It tastes like it may be American cheese. I will say the food was piping hot when it arrived and it was on time.

Shady neighborhood and bad customer service. Food choices are limited even though the menu has lots of food options most are not available.

One star is actually a stretch, smh. I had a groupon for one appetizer, 2 entree and two drinks. After looking at the menu I was looking forward to the soul food, but as soon as we started ordering there was a laundry list if things they didn't have. So we ordered the salmon cake with grits as an appetizer, I have the whiting with fried okra and sweet potatoe fries(I really wanted the oxtail, but they were out), my fiancé got the chicken and waffles with fries. We'll start with the good: the salmon cake and grits were delicious. Now let's start with the bad: 1. We waited over an hour for our food, in which the appetizer came after we got our food. 2. The food was blander and bland. 3. My fish was cold. 4. We had no utensils. What really made my blood boil was when I gave the waitress my phone to pay with the groupon she returns WITHOUT my phone. I'm like, where is my phone, she says 'oh yea'! Smh!!! So after sitting there for 5mins, I finally get up to look for her with my phone... I go downstairs and after a few minutes she comes out, and was like 'oh yea, your phone, hold on..." REALLY!!!! So that was the last straw for me. I wouldn't recommend anyone going here. I really wanted to like this place but it went downhill from the gate!

I have not been back since they re-opened recently. That being said, I LOVE the food. I have never been disappointed with the food or the staff. The place is small, warm and welcoming. I really like it. My only complaint is the speed of service. I have been four times and every single time it took forever to get our food. This may have changed with the re-open but I can't say. I guess I will have to see when I go back. Like it is so slow you could pre-order from Baltimore, drive to NE DC and take your time parking and maybe your order will be ready. Maybe.. But if you have time to sit back, sip on your drinks, chit chat with your party and wait for your food for only God knows how long... I think you should give it a try.

The food wasn't good compared to what I had from the same place a few years ago. There must've been a change in management or chefs. I had the pork chop, Mac and cheese and greens. Yuck.

I'm the queen of letting my Groupons expire, but this time I didn't. I grabbed my sister and we went on a rainy Friday night. Langston's is located in the up and coming vibrant area where the new trolley's run. We made reservations, good thing too because this place is about the size of my bedroom closet. The first floor has a bar, stools and I believe one table by the window. The restaurant was upstairs and what a set of stairs this place has. It's a bit of a death trap. I can easily see how someone could fall down them and get seriously injured. When we got to the top, we saw about 7-8 tables crammed into this little space. A few televisions were on the walls, the brick was painted in a pale green color and the decor looked kind of thrown together. It reminded me of a row-house in DC that was converted into a restaurant. We were seated immediately by the one waitress that had to wait on all of the tables on this level. She informed us that since we were using a Groupon an automatic 18% gratuity would be charged to our bill. I'm not use to hearing a server tell me that when I use a Groupon. I'm a big tipper, to those that deserve it, so I never need anyone to force a large tip out of me. I checked out the menu prior to leaving and knew that I wanted the chicken and waffles. I was informed by the server that they no longer serve the chicken and waffles but she would ask the chef if she could make an exception. I greatly appreciated this because the chef obliged and was able to make the chicken and waffles for me. Unlike some of the other reviewers, we didn't wait long for our meal. Granted, our appetizer (we had the fried wings...I know, my meal and appetizer included fried chicken...what can I say, not much of a variety here) came out the same time as our entrees, but we overlooked that. My sister got the shrimp and grits and we both had a glass of Merlot. Both of our meals were just average, nothing to write home about. I do give major props to our server for being attentive to each table in the room, but I just wasn't impressed with the food. I'm giving this place 3 stars because of the chef accommodating my order and the server being so attentive in a hectic environment. I can pretty much guarantee that I won't be back, but that's why I love Groupons because you can try a place for a reasonable price and either continue to come or never come back.

The extra star is because I know they are trying to do better. In short, there is nothing great about this place. Actually, the only reason I went to this place was because I was bamboozled into buying the groupon. (That's another story for a rainy day). Since I had invested money in this place, there was no way I was going to let my money go down the drain. My cousin graciously took the challenge with me to head to Langston and I now owe her a decent dinner. The day we arrived, the upstairs seating was not available so we were forced to sit in the bar area...next to the restroom. I tried to act as if this wasn't a big deal, but I couldn't fathom how I would finish my meal while eating next to a restroom that was in heavy rotation. When we sat down, a young man shortly came out the restroom looking disheveled and smelling like the devil's lettuce. From ear hustling, we found out that he worked at Langston and was a cook there. Before we even ordered, I started saying my prayers over the food. My prejudgment wasn't in vain. When my cousin went in the restroom after him, she stated that the entire bathroom smelled like 420 and the sink was completely dry. Therefore, he did not wash his hands after doing his business. Thank God, that he didn't go back in the kitchen; he stayed at the bar. The waitress came over and took our drink orders. As for the wine choices, Riesling or Merlot. That's it. The food presentation was the best part of the visit. Everything else was just "Meh". There is nothing about this place that would ever make me return. The waitress was so nice, but I am sure she knew we weren't pleased. After all, we didn't finish anything we ate. I am beginning to think I was better off just donating that money to Langston and not ever cashing in on the groupon.

Passed this placed a hundred times and decided to park and check it out; with no bullet proof protection or armed security (shady neighborhood). Upon entering, the bartender was pleasant and welcoming. Thought to myself this is GREAT, because good customer service is out the window in the DC area. I ordered fried tilapia with side of mac/cheese and string beans to go. See pic of this $15 dish. One very small piece of fish and two small sides. I honestly thought they made a mistake and gave me a meal from the kids menu. Ordering take out, I almost never tip. I decided to check out the food first and then on my next visit, give a generous tip for great customer service. To not feel cheated, robbed or mislead, I've convenience myself that I paid $15 for a nice friendly conversation with a bartender who threw in the fish and sides as a good gesture to say thanks for stopping in to have small talk. As for the quality of the food...if you ask me, I think they share a basement kitchen with that rat hole Wings-N-Wings carryout next door....not good at all! No way would I recommend or visit this place EVER again. Thinking to call the cops to report I was robbed...but don't want to go to jail for misuse of 911; food prob much better there.

Upscale soul food in a not-so-great neighborhood? I'll take it! Came here for lunch/brunch with the bf Sunday and enjoyed ourselves immensely. Very much a neighborhood bar and restaurant. There is a parking lot, but there's plenty of street parking. Don't let the outdoor fool you! This is an intimate, classy neighborhood bar. Although the music level is inconsistent (way too loud for a relatively empty place), the music itself was a nice blend of jazz, R&B and soul. I would come back just for the fried chicken livers. The fried okra was also solid. Wish I had also ordered some cast iron corn bread. I did not opt for any of the brunch specials (chicken n waffles AND eggs? a little overboard for me). Pork spare ribs, however, I did do, with a side of collards and sweet potato. The ribs were fall off the bone, and the bone was so tender you could get the marrow out. Nice neutral sweet bbq sauce. Collards weren't sweet or too vinegary. The sweet potato tasted like pumpkin pie filling (my bf loved it, I did not). I also stole a bunch of his garlic mashed potatoes (very garlic heavy, awesome!) and a bite of his fried chicken - tasted smoked then fried! But the entree only comes with a quarter of a chicken. Entrees ran about $16-20, and sides were usually $4-8. We were the only folks dining in the upstairs area at 1pm, but it was getting full by 2:30 when we left! There's also a downstairs bar area, and a back patio that's temporarily enclosed. I think a lot of the post-church crowd comes here. Service and food is a little on the slow side, but nothing that noticeable.

UPDATE: finally went to use my groupon, wanted to give them a shot. I wish I could give a -10 review. Quick reasons why I'll never go back: - Made reservation, no table available upon arrival - Took 1 hour and 45 minutes for entree to arrive (food got stuck on conveyer belt coming up from the kitchen, they had to recook our meals) - Once entrees arrived, chicken was BLOODY inside. Plate covered in pink juice (see photo) - management never came over to apologize or attempt to remedy situation Only positive was our server was very nice and apologetic. Still not enough to ever go back. We will certainly request a refund for the groupon.

Now I love this place, but today was the end of my love affair with them. So they had a fish fry today I was so excited about getting my food from them. Until I got my food. Just SAD this is what I got for $10 each. Now the food was good but the portion sizes was very small.

The version of bang bang shrimp and fish sliders are the best. The juke box is a wonderful addition to Girls Night Out!!!! Thanks Lovie for the great bartending experience. Try her special version of the Long Island!!! You know not to many can get a Long Island right, and she on point!!!

It is so unfortunate that I have to give this place 2 stars because the food was awesome. We had the jerk chicken wings, the fish bites, the chicken and waffles, and the shrimp and grits--with mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and fried okra for sides....and every single bite was like heaven. Unfortunately, our experience there was terrible. We had an 8:45 reservation. We got there at 8:55 and they told us they had given our table away, even though most restaurants in DC give you a 15-20 minute leeway to deal with unexpected traffic, etc. (Their parking lot was full, so we had to unexpectedly look for parking, and then walk down the street because the sidewalks weren't shoveled.) We had to wait 30 minutes to be seated, which wasn't so bad because we just got drinks at the bar. BUT once we were seated, it took 30 more minutes for the waitress to take our order. Then it took 30 more minutes to get our drinks. And from the time she took our order, it took ONE HOUR to get our appetizers! We were so hungry and really looking forward to the food, but by the time it came out at 11:00, we were really just ready to go home. I really don't get why it took so long, because there was only one other table there by the time we ordered, and they had already eaten, so we had to have been the only order in the kitchen. I won't be back, which is disappointing because I'll miss the food.

UPDATE!! Whenever my Bestie from CT comes to town we try to hit this spot up. The neighborhood atmosphere* at a bar is something she'is very familiar with, so we try to stop if when time allows, but usually late night on the weekend. We stopped in for drinks and a light bite to eat before heading home. We decided to sit in the downstairs bar area (our favorite place). We were joined later by a MD friend making it a interesting Tuesday early evening "turn up"!! Lol The service (bar staff) nevers seems to diappoint and this time the food was on point too! My CT Bestie ordered a Huge Salad and Smothered Fried Chicken Livers and Onion in gravy, while I had the Beef Burger Sliders. Note: The salad and livers are worth coming back for, but the burgers weren't different tasting than any other place's offering of the same dish. Again, the alcohoic drinks were on the money (tax added). We weren't disappointed even though each time we go there's a different bartender on duty. Last night "Jay" was manning the bar and the dining room runs (dumb waiter to upstairs)!! He had things under control and truth be told the service was just a tad bit slow, but we understood. Once again, the bar music put you in the mood to talk, cut up (laugh) and drink up; which we did!! *Langston's is best described as a "black owned and run CHEERS", based on all the "regulars" that seem to come and go everytime I'm there! Lol I'll be back, at least in the bar area!!

Had the chicken and waffles. Needed more soul for this soul food. Bartender Demetrius was entertaining and attentive.

So I went in apprehensive because of the reviews but i was not going to let my groupon deal go to waste. Yes it is small no intimate dinner here. But it is doable. So I ordered fried chicken livers as an app (now im not really a liver person) but i do know it was fried to long the outside batter wonderfully crisp the liver some pieces a lil tough the white gravy went well with it (i added a lil hot sauce to it. My sis ordered the Fried pork chop dinner with string beans (which i could not stop stealing :) and mash potatoes. The string beans was cooked in a nice sauce with a little kick to it very good. Pork chops over cooked :( I order the fried chicken and waffle with collard greens and mac n cheese. The greens was ok the chicken was fried nicely and tasty the waffle was okay. The mac n cheese was absolutely Delicious and i know good mac n cheese. I do not know if they have different cooks i have heard mixed reviews on the mac but it was to good. I ordered one of there special drinks don't remember what it was but it was super strong ( and i am a drinker) for $11 i was not complaining though. All in all it was good service waiter was attentive yet food took a while and app came out with entree (i really dont like this). Food was portioned good as me and my sis had more then enough to take home. I would only come back to eat if someone else wanted me to and would not go out of my way to go. I would visit to go just to the bar if there drinks are continuously strong.

We are visiting on vacation ad bought a grupon, when we arrived we were seated then told a few mins later that the kitchen had a problem and had no food. The manager refused to refund because of third party purchase and wasn't really coming up with any options to help us out. (Also watch for bugs)

Alethia and Destiny were awesome servers with great suggestions and wonderful attitudes. The appetizers were just as appealling. The ol bay wings were like lil fried chicken perfection. The fish nuggets were also great.

This is my favorite place to go when I want to have a feel for good food, conversation and a chance to vibe with the community. Sit and talk to the neighbors have a hookah or cigar outside. I love the bartender Lovey she is AWESOME.

We went here while visiting DC. The neighborhood seemed a bit shady- not somewhere I would walk alone at night for sure. We had a Groupon and had called to make reservations. When we got there, the place was empty. We were seated upstairs in the dining area. After about 10-15 minutes, someone came to take our drink orders. In the meantime, we had been pursuing the menu and decided what we each wanted. Our waiter came back to get our food orders and as each of us ordered, he kept saying they were out of that thing. We were finally so frustrated we asked outright what DID they have?! He left and came back and told us there had been a problem in the kitchen and they didn't have much food. He told us there were a few things, for example we could split an order of crab cakes and there were 10 wings available... seriously, the WORST experience ever. We ended up leaving (after killing a roach on our table). If the kitchen was out of order, why in the world didn't they tell us that when we first got there?! Luckily, I was able to get a refund through Groupon.

The area is a little sketchy. I think I saw about ten police officers while in the establishment. The drink specials for happy hour are decently priced. The food was delicious. I have the wings (crispy & juicy) the collard greens were da bomb, and the mashed potatoes were legit. The jukebox was pumping. They had a cigar social Tues night between 6p-10p, with free stogie and whiskey for $30. The staff were really friendly and offered good tips on other places to see and eat at.

Stopped into Langston after a shitty meal at chipotle and risking the e-coli outbreak. The staff were very pleasant, I ordered two bread puddings to go. Got home and notice a third party in my pudding, yep it was a baby roach. I will not be returning at all, on my mother. Wtf! why me today? first chipotle and now my little neighborhood spot.....#jesus take the wheel

Langston is one of the greatest gems in NE DC. The grille is cheap and delicious. It takes a little while so you might wanna call ahead. Mostly known for their breakfast stuff but you can get burgers, turkey burgers half smokes that sort of thing too. Beers are like $5.

I grew up in DC and live up the street from Langston's. When it first opened years ago it was AMAZING. I mean the food, and I'm a certified foodie, was phenomenal. Fast forward, over the years as the chefs have come and gone Langston's suffers from an identify crisis. I have a high tolerance for bad service but the last two times I've been the waiter service has been ABYSMAL. I mean to the point where I haven't wanted to come back. And I want to see this place succeed. I wish Antonio (the owner) would let me work with these people. In two weeks, I would have the staff whipped into shape. However, the food has now become more consistent, so that's why they get three stars.

We were willing to trek to Northeast for a veritable soul food feast - fried chicken and spare ribs (the kind where you should wear bibs) and collards with fatback at least. To the patio we headed to eat while watching the Celtics take on the Heat. Service started out slow, but my Red Stripe was cold and the atmosphere couldn't be beat. But oy, what a mess this became. The tenders, when they finally came were the wrong kind of wing (though this was a good thing as wings beat out tenders, not the same). Hours later, we finally could order. And oh, how we recoiled in horror: no short ribs, no greens, and only string beans to accompany these dinners for four. Shrimp and grits, at long last, came out cold. Mashed potatoes were horribly over-sold. Chicken and waffles were bland, the oxtail missing the yams, and all in all we wish we'd been told that Langston's really not ready for prime-time. Admittedly, the fried chicken does shine. But wait staff is sassy and slow and the problems continued to grow while our bellies grumbled in the meantime.

Came here for my birthday and had a great time. Perfect spot for those mid-afternoon drinks. That's coming from somebody who doesn't drink too heavily. Great low key ambiance and environment

If you are not familiar with the entire spectrum that is Washington, DC and you only travel to DuPont Circle, Georgetown, Adams Morgan, and U Street, do not come to this place. If you're like me and you don't mind going off the beaten path, then this place is for you. First off, let me be honest. This neighborhood is trying to pass as "up and coming" because of the streetcar tracks, but its not "up" or "coming." I purchased a Groupon for the restaurant, so I figured I should use it before its promotional value expires. Like many places on H Street, this place is lacking on space. A full bar occupies the first floor and the restaurant sits on the second floor. Unfortunately, our poor waitress had to carry all of our food up these steps. The layout is weird. The restaurant section had two extremely large TVs, which proved distracting for conversations. Thank goodness the dunk contest was on, but I'm also happy I wasn't on a first date. I ordered the shrimp and grits. My grandmother is from South Carolina and these are the best shrimp and grits I've had in a very, very, very long time. I was so pleased with my meal that I ordered the bread pudding for dessert. The bread pudding served its purpose, but I've definitely had better. Overall, I really enjoyed my meal. If under cover police officers harassing Black teenagers scares you, then don't come here. But if you don't mind an area that is reminiscent of U Street before it became "U Street," then grabbing a delicious meal on a boring Saturday night may be for you.

If I could give this place -5 stars I would! I went there for a bday party...about 15 of us. Sooo, I, along with the others, order our food at 8:45pm and at 9:57pm they receive their food, I dont. And heres the catch! Im the only one at the table with a fork and knife, nobody else has utensils. Sooo, one of the people at our table eventually went to the back of the restaurant to retrieve clean utensils from where the place kept them since the waitress kept forgetting to bring them to the tabe. Sooo, while everyone is enjoying their food, I ask the waitress where my crab cakes are. She tells me "I got you". Tells me 30 minutes after the already more than hour I waited to tell me that they ran out of crab cakes. Basically she told me about 1:45 mins later that they didnt have crab cakes! It was bad enough that she forgot to bring me my detox tea. I asked her if they had something else on their menu and she kept saying they didnt have stuff. ugh! Sooo I ask her for a free entree because of my pain and suffering and she tells me "No but I can give you a free drink". Im like WTF! A drink!! So I tell her to give me the drink, but I didnt believe she would bring it to me. Tell me why I NEVER received my drink. AND tell me why one of the guys at our table kept going downstairs to the bar to fill up the pitcher and a girl at our table found some clean cups and was passing them down like in school...take one, pass it down. My experience here was atrocious! I reeeeally wish I could give it less. Now heres the kicker, I ate off other peoples plate like a hobo cause I was hungry and the food wasnt even all that. AND one of the girls said she went to this place before and when she cut open her chicken, blood came gushing out. Nasty!

I purchased a Groupon for Langston Grill which consisted of 1 appetizer, 2 entrees and 2 glasses of wine for $29. My best friend also purchased the same Groupon and we decided to do a " date night" with our significant others. We originally drove pass the restaurant because its not very visible. My husband made reservations in advance but when we arrived, the fact that we had reservations made no difference at all. We were instructed to go upstairs for dining/seating. Once upstairs there was no one there to greet or seat us. So we sat ourselves and waited for someone to acknowledge us which seemed like it took for ever. There was only 2 other parties there; a couple and then a group of 3 and it was 9:30 on a Saturday night. Long story short and 2 hours later, we were completely turned off by the poor service, the food was a huge disappointment and more importantly, they wouldn't allow us to use both of our Groupons because of technicalities. The wine was watered down, the chicken was bland and not flavorful, the greens tasted like they were cooked in fish grease. The only thing that was half way decent was the potato salad. Our waitress was the WORST! She couldn't remember our meals even though she wrote everything done after we insisted that she do so. We would have to ask and remind her over and over again for refills on our drinks, napkins, silverware, etc... She never checked on us to see how we were doing or if we enjoyed our meal. So now I'm stuck with a groupon that I have no interest in ever using. Langston Grill was a complete let down! From start to finish our dining experience went from bad to worse.

***FOOD TRUCK REVIEW ONLY*** I ordered the pulled chicken, potato salad, and dirty rice platter from the Langston food truck at the H Street Festival. Besides being repeatedly hit on by "Joe", the food was an equally AWFUL experience. It looked awful. I now regret not taking an iPhone photo of it. The potato salad was grey! The pulled chicken looked like potted meat. The dirty rice was just huge hunks of hamburger with rice mixed in. Ugh! :-( Awful! It tasted awful. The potato salad was just HUGE hunks of potato with a little mayo. No detectable onion, celery, or seasonings. The pulled chicken had SO much vinegar in it, I was wondering "what are they trying to hide?" Just as I started getting really worried about foodborne illness, my conscious mind took over and I threw that mess away. Worst food I've ever eaten. Waste of $10.00! Negative Five Stars

Took the sibling for Brunch. Only one real option which is " The Brunch platter". You get alot for 18 bucks including a mimosa that she couldn't drink yet ;) . Cheesy eggs, home fries, salmon cake, crazy good grits, turkey sausage and your choice of waffles or french toast. Everything was good... normally some things are hit or miss, but everything was good here. Service was up to par,bartender was cool, cracking jokes and what not. Close to home and anti-H street. Might be my new place.

Not only do i try to support local businesses, I do my best to support local black-owned businesses. With that being said, I wanted to like Langston's - but dammit - you FAILED me! I had heard about this place from a few friends and wanted to come in for dinner. One of my girlfriends and I came in before a night on the town - Friday night around 8pm. When we walked in, the bar was quite packed with a late 30's/early 40's crowd. We walked upstairs and were immeadiately seated. The place isn't too big or too small, but there is an area that looked like an enclosed patio that might be nice during the summer. I looked at their drink menu and decided to have the banana pudding drink. When I ordered it, the waiter immeadaitely said "we don't have eveyrthing to make that" - ummm really? it's on your menu. Another waitress was walking by and corrected him, but letting him know the downstairs bar was fully capable. OK.... A short wait later I had my drink and so did my friend. Whoa - my drink was super strong. Which, just to be honest, is how I like it. We asked for recommendations on food from our waiter since we hadn't been before and his response was "I don't eat meat" - when ALL of their dishes have meat, this might not be the best working situation for you guy! I decided on the crab cakes and my friend had the chicken and waffles. It took damn near 30 minutes for our dishes to finally show up - well partially. My friends chicken and waffles showed up as chicken wings.... with a waffle that followed after a few minutes. My crab cake was ok, my sides weren't good at all. One didn't even look edible. By the time we were done, we had a hard time finding out waiter because he was on what seemed like an important call. Must have been more important than getting us the check....

Langston's is a two level restaurant with a bar, jukebox, and flatscreen TV's on the first floor and dining for 30-40 on the second level. Exposed brick walls meet flatscreen TV's all around on the second floor - even in the bathroom! Overall, the ambiance is modern and funky. Environment? Check. What about service? I walked in and had to go upstairs to find the waiter/host to get set seated (12:50pm). I ordered coffee, but there was none made (or they were out - another customer that brought his own INSTANT coffee in his bag offered me some). My waiter then went to get hot water, sugar, and cream (returned 1:05pm). By this time two other customers came in, a Caucasian couple and two elder African American sistas. The waiter took their order (but wait, he didn't take mine yet!). He came back to finally take my order (Chicken and Waffles; green beans and macaroni and cheese sides - 1:15pm). The Caucasian couple's order came up first (1:25pm) - but they were the last of the three sets of customers (including me) to arrive. Last to arrive but first to eat? Hmmm... Food: after the elder sistas order was served, finally it was my turn (1:35pm). Overall, it was worth the wait. The garlic-pepper green beans and macaroni and cheese were actually the highlight of the meal. The chicken was okay; not very meaty, but crispy and flavorful crust/skin (I had dark). The waffle was doughy, not crispy on the outside and flaky on the inside like some really good waffles I've had elsewhere. Their waffle tasted like one I make at home. Details can make or break a dining experience. At Langston's it was the temperature of the waffle and syrup. Both were cold. Additionally, the syrup was from Wal-Mart; Richfood syrup. How do I know? The waiter/host brought the entire bottle when I asked for more. For the price, ambiance, and wait, I expected something of more quality. Overall, the ambiance was nice, the service was good (the wait was a bit long), the food was okay, but the sides were really good. Will I come back? Yes. Do I recommend to others? The jury's still out.

So sad to say but the more I go here the worst it gets. I've tried and tried to give Langston time to get their act together, but it seems as if it's time for me to give up. I have one more Restaurant.com voucher to use and I'm not sure if I'll use it. I came back two weeks ago and brought a friend because I owed them dinner. To my surprise the prices have gone up quite a bit. The shrimp and grits used to be like $14/$16 and now are $19. Well you would think that with the inflation you would get better, but NO it got worse! The quantity is not the same nor does it taste the same. And it was COLD! The green beans were salty and cold and the mac and cheese....(I NEVER THOUGHT I'D SAY THIS).......were too cheesy. And I LOVE CHEESE!!! My friend got the spare ribs, he said the bbq sauce was tasty, but the ribs were a little bland. And of course, it still takes forever for the food to come, but what I don't understand is how if everything is cooked fresh to order WHY DOES IT ALWAYS COME OUT COLD??? The waiter and waitress both said it was their second or third day so they were a little slow in getting or knowing things, but I could work with that. Some other patrons weren't as understanding and I think the waitress was about ready to cry. I saw a few other tables sending certain items back because it wasn't what they asked for, or wasn't cooked properly or they ran out of something and substituted with something else. One table I thought was about ready to fight the poor girl and the chef had to come upstairs and talk to them and that didn't go too well either. I hate to say this, but given the other reviews people are writing lately and the past few experiences I've had here, this place is going nowhere, but downhill. They obviously have a new chef who was not trained by the old one because the quality of food has gone down and they keep cutting back on side items and raising prices. Oh and not to mention I like music like the next person, but not to the point where the music is blasting and knocking your eardrum out. It sounded more like a club than a bar/restaurant. I would say get it together Langston, but at this point I think you're a lost cause.

VERY Small, quaint, low-key spot. Food is good. Service is somewhat slow depending on the night. Salmon cakes and jerk wings are the highlight. Drinks not bad either. They also have a food truck that I visited on yesterday. They were out of all their sides so the guy offered me a deal, 10 jerk wings for $8. To my surprise, when I checked my account, I was actually charged $10. No worries. I will be paying the truck and its owner a visit next week when they return.

Once you get past the service and tiny space, you get some pretty good food. My wingspan was wall to wall. Very limited seating. The waitress was on her second day on the job and it was very apparent. She asked if she could borrow a pen to take our orders *_* The full service bar was out of an item for my original drink I ordered. Btw, they are located right next door to a liquor store. The saving grace for my dining experience was the food. They serve soul food and I was happy about that since there are few places that serve soul food in the city. I ordered grilled pork chops, mashed potatoes, and string beans (possibly the best string beans I ever had, very well seasoned). One friend ordered ribs, mac & cheese, and collard greens; my other friend ordered shrimp and grits, with mac on the side. They were equally pleased with their meals. I sampled the mac & cheese and it was good and I am VERY critical about mac & cheese. Would have overlooked the poor service and given four stars if our food had came out hot. It was just warm.

I tried to like them, but for the money they charge there are better soul food restaurants in the DMV to choose from. We had a Groupon & won't be back--not even for carry out. Pros: chicken was tasty & our waitress was nice Cons: cramped space, slow food service, several items on the menu were sold out, & a waitress walking around with his pants hanging off his butt (I REALLY didn't want to see your red underwear).

Girls night! While we didn't have any food I would love to go back and try some of their tasty fried southern treats. The bartenders have a heavy pour which is always appreciated and the only negative thing that I can say is that they were out of a lot of things. The poor guy next to me kept rolling snake eyes with his orders. Granted, I am sure that they are receiving a bit more business now that H St/Atlas is creeping up on them so perhaps they need some time to adjust. I would absolutely return for some adult beverages and mac 'n cheese.

Ask for Brenda or Trice to serve you. The place is small but very comfortable. Let's call it cozy. We chose to dine upstairs. Our server was prompt and ready to please. The fried chicken, oh so de-yummy! The mashed garlic potatoes almost rival mine at home. The greens, cooked well, were just a bit salty for my taste. My dinner companion had salmon cakes with cheese grits and greens. He was in HEAVEN! Loved every bit and ate every bite! Great place. I recommend!

The place seemed to be very nice from the inside. The outside wasn't so welcoming based on the area it was on. The service was very bad it took them forever to bring our food and appetizers. The employees were nice and welcoming but it wasn't enough. The food was very very basic it tasted plain nothing that all five of us had to eat was extraordinary. It seems that this is better for drinks instead of a meal with family. Had plenty of food left over and will not be bringing any home not even to my dog. Will not be returning. Came here for a Father's Day dinner that wasn't at all good.

I so wanted to like this place. I really did. Particularly because it's close to home and I'm all about supporting neighborhood businesses. But it's just not there. I've been several times, and each time something was not quite right. They stopped serving dinner before they were supposed to; the food was cold, or over salted; or the service was slow to the point of being ridiculous. The last time we went, we discovered that a new chef had been hired, and that he changed the one item that we actually liked on the brunch menu (and that change was not an improvement). Much of the problem seems to be a sheer lack of effort. They have a great location, they make great drinks, if they'd just step up the food and the service, they could have a winner. When they do, let me know and I may go back.

So my man Vic let the people at grub hub know that we didn't receive all the order. Got refunded and the food was great . Can't lie the bounce back was great glad to see they took initiative.

I think the best way to describe Langston's is "A Diamond in the Rough". A good friend and I decided on this location after driving past it numerous times. While we were reluctant to go based on the area we finally decided to suck it up. I must say we were glad we did. I will break it down below Appearance; Langston's is located in a very suspect area however they have a parking lot and once your make your way through the clowns on the street you walk into a newly renovated bldg with great decor. So I would rate it's appearance 8/10 (there were alot of flies in the parking lot because the dumpster wasn't emptied) Service; We went on a thursday so it was slow to say the least. The Bartender instructed us to sit wherever we would like and she would be right with us. That translated to about 20mins but she was holding it down b/c she was the ONLY person servicing the few ppl there. Eventually the evening staff showed up to help and things got better. So I would rate the service 7/10 Food/Drink; Langston's is a upscale soul food spot with alot of great options if you enjoy southern cooking. We had the fish which was tasty. I also ordered Okra but the waitress forgot to put it in (mistakes happen, she was the ONLY server) The drinks took a little long to get to us but my voodka &cranberry was extremely strong :^D Overall; I def would like to go back because it was very chill and I can respect that. I didn't have to RUN and go pay a meter or worry about someone backing up into my car. I am interested to seeing what it would be like during a RUSH b/c it was very calm tonight... I'd say def check out Langston's b/c it's a Diamond in the Rough

"Diamond in the rough" is what our server said when we got there and after our meal I heartily agree. Came here with the Groupon that was well worth it. The jerk chicken wings we got for an appettizer were not spicy, but they definitely had flavour and the dirty rice they were served with was top notch. The entrees we had were fried chicken, oxtails served with mac and cheese, fried okra and green beans. All top notch. I can't speak for the many bad reviews I see on this page, however my experience was great. The staff were friendly, food and drinks came in the timely manner and the restaurant was a decent atmosphere. Will visit again, Groupon or not.
