Houston’s Best Chinese Restaurants | Eater Houston

"When Tony Hu opened Lao Sze Chuan in 1998, it was one of the first Sichuan restaurants in Chicago and made Hu a nationwide name. It has since expanded beyond Chicago, with the first Texas location opening in Katy in 2021 and the second in Montrose just this year (More locations in Houston, Dallas, and Austin are reportedly coming soon). Boasting a menu similar to the Chicago locations, Lao Sze Chuan offers its most popular dishes, including dry chili chicken wings, crispy shrimp in sweet and savory mango sauce, and mapo tofu. The crispy-skinned smoked tea duck, served with pillowy bao buns, is another highlight." - Lane Gillespie

The ‘Mayor’ of Chicago’s Chinatown Opens Lao Sze Chuan in Houston | Eater Houston

"I attended the grand opening of Lao Sze Chuan’s Montrose outpost on June 21, 2023, which featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a dancing dragon performance, and remarks from U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (delivered via representative) and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, who proclaimed June 21 “Lao Sze Chuan Day.” Hu Xiaojun (Tony Hu) — the restaurateur known as the unofficial mayor of Chicago’s Chinatown — opened this location after nearly 10 years of planning and says it offers about 70 percent of the Chicago menu, with both traditional and modern takes on Sichuan cuisine; popular dishes I noted include dry chili chicken wings, crispy shrimp in a sweet-and-savory mango sauce, mapo tofu, cumin lamb, Sichuan string beans, and smoked tea duck. The name loosely translates to “traditional Sichuan,” and Hu said he was drawn to Houston because of its booming, diverse dining scene and new local partnerships." - Brittany Britto Garley

I’ve ordered the General Tso’s Chicken from Lao Sze Chuan several times now and it’s always solid. The flavor is great, the portion size is generous, and for the price it feels like really good value. The staff are friendly and the quality has been very consistent every time I’ve ordered. Definitely one of my go-to spots when I’m craving takeout.

Google
I came for lunch and had the boiled fish lunch special with hot&sour soup. ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT!!! The "lunch special" menu is quite extensive. My friend had the two pepper chicken and loved it. Great service and good ice tea. I will definitely be back!

Google
Ordered from here and they sent no sauces. I’m a sauce girl. I need my packets of sodium and red5. Why no napkins? No cutlery was involved. However, food is delicious. I have my own cutlery, right? But, the sauces. I’ll never forgive. I’ll never forget.

This place was really mellow & chill, the band that was playing was absolutely superb! My wife wanted to get up and just dance to the music. Awesome night, awesome atmosphere. We will be back. Thank you!

Google
Nice place to bring friends and family for Chinese and Szechuan cuisine. Very friendly staff. They will recommend the best options. Try the Spicy Crunchy Tofu, the Wood Ear Mushroom, or the Spicy Peanut Cucumber Salad.

Love going to Lao Sze Chuan for lunch. Their plates are a good price with soup and an egg roll for under $15.00! I always have left overs.

Google
Lao Sze Chuan has delicious food served in a clean and trendy establishment. They have a wide ranging menu with fair prices. The pork soup dumplings were great with a perfectly steamed outside to piping hot flavorful broth on the inside. The sesame chicken had a nice sweet and spicy flavor and I felt it was not over breaded. The staff was very nice and helpful as well

I came here on a Friday afternoon and there was no wait; I was seated down right away. It's very nice inside with modern but authentic decor. I've been going to the location in Bellaire but since that shut down, I stopped by this one instead. The chefs are amazing. I give props to them for the delicious and fresh dishes that I ordered. I got the Mongolian beef, water boiled fish, and the chef special dry chili chicken. Beef with the onions were just perfect with the balanced ratio. Fish was super tender and easy to eat with the spicy szechuan sauce. The dry chili chicken breading was different but the chicken was juicy. Honestly, I will come back for the food. Only complaint I have is the customer service. I don't know if it's just me but even when there was only me and another group in the restaurant, it felt like the staff was non-existent. The waiter did help me with replacing my soup that I didn't like to a different one which I was happy about. Of course, I do have to get the attention of a waiter about 80% of the time. I actually had the same issue with the Bellaire location. If it wasn't for food, I probably would avoid coming back.

Yelp
Absolute gem of a restaurant in our neighborhood. This is our favorite place to get Chinese food (and in our top 3 local choices to get food of any kind). Top choices include Chef Tony's chicken, combo fried rice, the chicken dumplings with Szichuan chili oil and the pineapple sweet and sour sauce. Others we have tried and loved include general tso's, orange chicken, lychee squirrel fish and more! Portions are decent and the menu is reasonably priced given the quality of the food and current other pricing in restaurants. Service has always been great when we go in and we get take out from them a bunch too and they're so quick to have it ready. It's a nice, clean place which has been moderately busy whenever we have been in. Hopefully they stay! We love having them so close by!

Yelp
This place ended up being a constant companion for us while we were in the med center for 90 days. Other dishes we tried include Tony's Favorite Chicken 9/10 Chicken dumplings in Szechuan oil 10/10 Beef with stir fry flat rice noodle 8.5/10 Prawn and pork Siu Mai 6/10 Hot and sour soup 7/10 Nearly all of it was just spectacular. I bet we went 20 times.

Yelp
Best authentic Chinese food in Houston. Easy. Get the Pineapple Fried Rice with Beef. Thank me later.

Yelp
I wasn't sure what to expect from Lao, as I've never had a recommendation to come visit. They have plenty of parking a modern and cold (temperature wise) interior. I mean I was freezing and was loving that food came out as it was ready instead of all at once. Overall I thought this was fairly comparable to other really good Chinese restaurants in Houston. The good mix of American favorites and Chinese classics with a twist. The real standout of our order was the squirrel fish, which was the best I've had since finding out about how good this dish really is. I would definitely be back to try some other things from the menu now that I've had a good feel for what they can offer!
google avatar

Yelp
We came by for lunch on a cold day wanting some hot food. Located in Montrose in a small shopping plaza. Parking is easily available. The interior of the restaurant is actually decently contemporary and clean comparing to other Chinese spots. Service was great and the food came pretty quickly. Squirrel fish 4.5/5. Best we've had in Houston. Sauce is solid. We forgot to ask what kind of fish they used but hope it wasn't tilapia. Peking Duck 3/5. Not the best, slightly chewy and just not as crisp and tasty as others that we've had in Houston. The crepes were nice and thin so that's a plus to be authentic but for $55, this duck was a miss for me. Kung Pao chicken 3.5/5 slightly not traditional with the zucchini but tasted alright. Just not what I thought would be my traditional Kung Pao chicken but a slightly more Americanized version. Crispy chicken 3.5/5. Missing some spice but still nicely fried. It's just missing the super Sichuan pepper element to the dish that gives the dish its signature flavor. Egg yolk shrimp/prawn 3.5/5. We were actually looking for a walnut shrimp on the menu which they didn't have, so we opted for this. The taste was fine but not very outstanding and slightly oily. Overall a pleasant surprise and a decent choice for the area. Not the best Sichuan spot but definitely above a few other spots in the loop.

Yelp
Nice place. I finally tried it after driving by it many times. I will definitely go back. It has a nice bar and is very spacious. Good parking. It took a bit for someone to greet/seat me but it was all good. Service was great. They were very friendly and helpful. My food came out fast too. The hot and sour soup was good. Early what you would expect. The twice cooked pork dish was exactly what I expect as well. Great szechuan food, which is lacking in that area. It's very similar to Spicy/Cooking Girl and Pepper Twins. All good places too. This one has location on its side and easy parking. I will definitely be back. I do like their self service kiosk for take out orders too.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this branch because I love the Lao Sze Chuan in Bellaire. But wow, this branch was not it. It was one of the worst culinary experiences I've ever had. I should've known when I looked at the menu and realized the items were completely different from the Bellaire location's menu. I understand that the locations target different audiences, but I expected the flavor profiles of the dishes to be modified - not the entire menu. The menu was so different that I was surprised they were affiliated under the same (national) chain. For a chain that markets itself as "authentic Szechuan cuisine," this was definitely Americanized Chinese cuisine. And even by Americanized Chinese culinary standards, this food didn't taste good. Dishes that were supposed to be spicy were instead salted to death with no spice and no real flavor depth, and the stir fried vegetables were some of the blandest vegetables I've ever had the displeasure of eating. To add insult to injury, this was also the most expensive Americanized Chinese cuisine I've ever had (think Panda Express). My recommendation: in this area, if you want more authentic Chinese food, go to Wanna Bao. If you want Americanized Chinese, go to Rice Box. Otherwise, just drive to the Lao Sze Chuan in Bellaire.

Yelp
We found out their new location just opened in Montrose area for less than a month. We came on a Monday for lunch and the place was empty. Food was good but service not so. Even though we r the only customers in the restaurant we had to look for the server when we need to pay for the bill. Once he brought food out he disappeared. Maybe bcoz he got bored since the restaurant was empty. Lunch price is very reasonable for Montrose area. Hopefully they will pick up more customers in the future. I would give more stars if the server pay more attention to his customers. Maybe is something management should look into.
google avatar

Willy N.

Yelp
I am really glad they opened up a new location on this side of town as the drive to Bellaire can be far. The food here is out of this world! The Chef's Special Dry Chili Chicken is some of the best in town. The chicken is very flavorful with a nice crunch. The Golden Salted Egg Tofu is very crispy and juicy. The combination with the salted egg mixture is out of this world. Definitely a great addition to the Szechuan restaurants in town!

Yelp
This was a grand opening event. The event part was great. Mayor Turner, his daughter, and a couple of DJ's were there. The restaurant is within a small area with other stores and the parking lot is really small. We got to order our food, and it took over an hour for us to receive it. I wasn't upset about it because it was a grand opening and a lot of people were there. Once we received the food the beef in my beef and broccoli did not look well done. The food was salty. I had to ask for the steamed rice, and it came in a small bowl. I may try them again because the service and taste of food may have not been as good due to so many people attending the grand opening.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice place! I went during lunch. I had steamed edamame, egg drop soup, Mongolian beef with fried rice, and a fried chicken roll. My waitress was especially great. This dish was a little spicier than I expected but very good. They do a lunch special so not including the edamame, my total was around $13 which is more than fair.
google avatar

Bianca K.

Yelp
I ordered takeout from here the other night, it was my first time trying this restaurant and the food was AMAZING! The beef + broccoli and veggie fried rice was so good, I'd definitely order from this spot again.
google avatar

Yelp
Honestly The best Chinese I've had since living in Texas Being from the east coast, I love always had a great selection to choose from. So when i got to Texas and realized the Chinese food isn't the best, i was sad Service was so slow, and they were out of a drinks. They also messed up my friends order. He is allergic to shrimp and they put shrimp in his food He asked to recook it, they just took the shrimp out. HUGE NO They refunded his money but still ..... Ambiance was cool. I think you can bring your own bottle Would i return, yes because the food WAS AMAZING
google avatar

Yelp
Large servings so best to get a few entrees to share! Our favorites were the string beans and soup dumplings. The strawberry lemonade was tasty! Service was great - very friendly! Can't wait to come back and try other entrees!
google avatar

Denisha W.

Yelp
The food and service was awesome. We came on a Saturday afternoon and we had a party of 15. They were very accommodating.
google avatar

Katherine A.

Yelp
This is an excellent place for lunch or dinner. The food is delicious and the drinks non-alcoholic mixers are amazing! I have the Lychee Lemonade that was out of this world! This is fairly newly opened place only a couple months and looks like that are allowing BYOB for beer and wine in the mean time as well. I love their outside patio which is so beautiful that has a small stage. The staff are very pleasant and nice. It is definitely worth a try and trip.

Jill D.

Yelp
The food is fine. Not terrible, but not amazing enough to make up for the non-existent service. We went on a Friday night to a near empty restaurant at the tail end of a big party, who left after we received most of our food. We ordered soup dumplings, but they never came out. My husband had to get up and talk to the bartender because we were being ignored the entire time, no refills on drinks, nothing. The bartender said the soup dumplings take longer, which is BS. Dumplings usually come out before the rest of your order. By the time we got them we were too full to enjoy them. Again, the food is not good enough to receive such crappy service. No excuse being ignored because the place was nearly empty.
google avatar

Joy V.

Yelp
The food and service is excellent. I'm a Sichuan food fan and so glad to have another great option in town. The twice cooked pork and the dry chili chicken we're on point! Great flavor and good portion size. The dry fried string beans were also delicious. The East Meets West Fried Rice was a great new dish to add to the rotation. The green tea flavor is very unique. Might be strong for some. Can't wait to try the rest of the menu!
google avatar

Ron L.

Yelp
Foods were tasty, well prepared, and deliciously seasoned! Happened to meet the owner and she was courteous, pleasant, warm, and knowledgeable with each dish on the menu. We had a group of six people and had a great time! Will definitely go back there ! Thanks for serving such a delicious dishes!
google avatar

Jackie K.

Yelp
We had a good takeout dinner from Lao Sze Chuan. While a little sweet, I really liked the general tso chicken, and I also liked that the green beans contained a lot of ginger. The stir fry noodles were fine, nothing crazy, but good. In the future, I'd probably prefer to order from my favorite Rice Box, but Lao Sze Chuan was good.
google avatar

Houston B.

Yelp
The dishes taste very good, authentic Chinese food. The environment is pretty nice and western-style bar is going to open. Staffs are very polite. Will recommend to friends.

Yelp
The food, service and ambiance is awesome here. We were lucky to find this gem of goodness while staying in the museum district. The food is fresh. The restaurant is clean and new! The food is delicious! I had Kung Pao and my friend had veggie stir fry.
google avatar

David O.

Yelp
We have been here twice now and the food has been ab fab both times. Best Hot and Sour soup I have ever had. Complex flavor and just the right amount of heat. Seems like a lot of restaurants go overboard with black pepper in their Hot and Sour (which I don't care for) but this only has a hint of black pepper. My girlfriend has ordered Prawns with Mixed Vegetables both times and it has very been good both times. It's served Cantonese style with a very light but flavorful sauce. Large prawns and fresh vegetables. On our second visit I ordered Chicken with Spicy Garlic Sauce and it was the bomb!! Almost had to tell my girlfriend to get her own order because she kept sneaking bites off of my plate. This was Szechuan style with good heat. Not over the top but building in intensity bite by bite. I didn't leave any on my plate!!! They also offer pork and prawns with the Spicy Garlic Sauce so those could be on the table in a future trip. Also plan on trying their Egg Drop and Wonton soup on the next trip just to see how they stack up against the Hot and Sour. Seriously recommend this place I'd you're looking for American style Chinese food!!

christi m.

Yelp
This is best Chinese food I've ever eaten at a restaurant. Everything I tried is absolutely delicious. The staff is really nice and and ambiance is very comfortable. I liked it so much I actually went two nights in a row. I'm so happy they have a branch in the inner loop now.
google avatar

Steve L.

Yelp
A great place to go for authentic Chinese food in the Montrose area. I highly recommend the Peking Duck. It's one of the best in Houston! We came here for a family dinner to celebrate our uncle's 80th birthday. The restaurant staff did an awesome job of making his milestone special. The kids were entertained with their own table with a view of the Sunday football games and got special attention by their bar staff. Cannot recommend this place enough if you're in the area.
google avatar

Maria H.

Yelp
Has potential but needs work in a few areas. First, there is zero ambience. No Chinese decor, no Chinese music, just white walls and random music if any. Food is good and fresh but the menu is VERY limited, nothing like the Chinatown location, and a mere fraction of the dishes on the Chicago Michigan Avenue menu. You know most of the ingredients are common so no idea why this is so stripped down. I agree with the service. It's friendly though but good luck getting your check when you're ready to go. If I want to go out for Chinese and not order delivery, I need some ambience and some choices.
google avatar

Brandon H.

Yelp
This place is definitely elevated Asian cuisine. We have visited this location 3 times: first time was carry out, then the last two times, we dined in. Every dish we have tried has been excellent. Prices are a little too high, IMO. Pros: Quality of dishes, variety of dishes, speed of service Cons: sodas are served in cans (versus a fountain), pricing is a little high, service can be a little chaotic.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
Food was really good and service was amazing. We ordered a couple of fish dishes along with spicy shrimp, and tofu.

Elisabeth P.

Yelp
Pretty good food and service. A bit overpriced but that's probably the location. The soup dumplings and egg rolls are delicious. I wish they had a side of fried rice rather than having you buy a full order but I'd still come back to dine in or take out.

Trenae K.

Yelp
This is my new favorite spot! Soooo good! I got the garlic shrimp. The veggies weren't just the regular couple of pieces of broccoli!! The egg rolls so delirious and not with the spring roll wrap! Egg drop soup, snapping but no crispy noodles! When I first got there the host thought I was doing to go so she took forever, but once she realized I was dining in, she took great care of me! It was nice, quiet, and clean. It did just what needed to be done!! Oh and don't forget they have lunch specials and the portion size is well worth it!
google avatar

Janet F.

Yelp
Good food but a bit pricey. Started a lunch menu which helps. Upper class Asian. Small portions compared to other type restaurants. Service needs help. Very nice but Montrose location has only 1-2 people at any time. Hope it makes it! Service needs more training and better command of English. I hope they make it but a little too empty to be sure. They have a few dishes that will scream for your return!!

Preena L.

Yelp
I cannot recommend this place enough. For one they were open on Thanksgiving, the food is not very greasy, it is very flavourful, and have good portions. Our hearts and bellies were full. Amazing Tofu varieties, chilly chicken was crispy and chilly. Five stars. I will be returning to try more deliciousness.
google avatar

Jane H.

Yelp
I waited months to try this restaurant after it opened up in our neighborhood, as I did not realize it was a new location for an existing restaurant (one of the top rated Chinese restaurants in the U.S., Lao Sze Chuan in Chicago). The following dishes here are delicious: Singapore Rice Noodle; General Tso's Chicken; Twin Peppers Chicken, and Eggplants with Spicy Garlic Sauce.
google avatar

Lydia N.

Yelp
Great meal at the new location! This was our first time and we enjoyed everything. Nice bonus is that it is BYOB with no corkage fee! The staff were friendly and attentive. The restaurant was clean. All of the food was tasty. My favorites were the wontons (ask for extra chili oil!) and the orange beef. The flat noodles were nothing to write home about, rather bland in flavor. We will definitely be back to try other items on the menu!
google avatar

Clifford L.

Yelp
Ambience is nice, service is satisfactory and the food is good. Not quite Bellaire chinatown good but if you live in Montrose and too lazy to drive to Bellaire Chinatown, then come here. We ordered vegetable eggrolls, salt and pepper fried fish fillet, garlic stir fried baby bok choy, stir fried flat noodles with chicken and egg drop and wonton soup. All satisfactory. The garlic baby bok choy was the best, stir fried tender but crispy and with penetrating garlic flavor. Price is a little high but if you are too lazy to drive to chinatown, you have to pay up extra.
google avatar

Roger E.

Yelp
I love the food here. I've been several times and have been very happy with every choice. I do with the restaurant had better ambiance because it feels dull. The staff is very friendly and helpful when explaining the menu.

Sarah H.

Yelp
This is the best Szechuan food ever! We've ordered just about everything and have never, ever been disappointed. And when you ask for your dish to be extra spicy- they do it up perfectly!!!! Perfect spice!!! Take a sweater though. It's always chilly.

Kelley P.

Yelp
This was my first time at Lao Sze Chaun and I had an amazing experience! We had the soup dumplings, Stir-fried flat noodle chicken, Dumplings w Szechuan chilli oil Baby bok choy and Chefs special dry chili chicken. None of the dishes missed. My favorite was probably the soup dumplings or the noodles. Come here!!
google avatar

Maddie S.

Yelp
They're really new and getting used to the processes so I think they deserve some grace- however, the team needs to keep an eye on pickup orders. I chose the "pickup asap (10-20 minutes)" option and showed up 15 minutes later. When I showed up it was apparent they didn't have eyes on the computer, and I got the confirmation text then and there after they checked. I guess you can't complain about food freshness though lol! I got the orange beef and the octopus salad. The orange beef will be a hit for those that aren't really looking for authentic tasting Sze Chuan and enjoy the typical "chinese takeout" taste. It was orangey, sweet, and crispy. Great for a picky eater. The octopus salad was right up my alley! The fish sauce gives it a salty umami flavor and the chilis really gave it a kick. Would get again. Can't wait to try more on the menu and see this place grow.
google avatar

Nicole N.

Yelp
This place is amazing! So happy they opened up a new location. The original location is in Bellaire ( also an amazing place ) . They have amazing customer service, the food tastes great and it's affordable. This new location is so beautiful. Perfect for a dinner date, or a cute outing for lunch or brunch. I highly recommend. You don't be disappointed.

Yelp
Just had a to-go order and the food was delicious. Food was also prepared on time. So pleased that you are just a short walk away from our home.
google avatar

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
Delicious food and great ambiance. Great for vegetarian lovers and the owner Jenny is so friendly and lovely!

Thomas W.

Yelp
Not to my liking. The General Tso's Chichken was overwhelmed by the amount of Peppers. The vegetable spring rolls had very little filling and were mostly wanton wrapper. The sweet and sour sauce was like a spiced ketchup and while nothing I have ever had before, I hope to never have the culinary experience again. I had high hopes for this restaurant because it is just around the corner from where I live. It was very disappointing. The service was good, and the ambiance nice. That did not redeem the quality of the food though.

george c.

Yelp
The food is good but I had a weird experience here. I walked in on a Monday during lunch time and the restaurant was nearly empty except for a couple people waiting for to-go orders. I made eye contact with a server who didn't greet me and I stood awkwardly for a moment before noticing an ordering kiosk. Since I wasn't greeted I was under the impression where this was one of those places where you order from a self-service kiosk then take a seat. I thought the prices were high and I flagged down the server to ask if they had a lunch special to which she answered no. I placed my order from the kiosk and then took a seat at a table in the middle of the empty restaurant. 10 minutes later I was brought food in a to-go bag although I'd intended to dine in. This should've been obvious to them because I took a seat at an actual table, not by the front door! I said I wanted to eat it there and only then was I told the kiosk is for to-go orders only. I guess this was my mistake but they had multiple opportunities to explain that to me prior. The server seemed almost frustrated with me but she did bring me a plate and I ate the food there. The food was good but the prices are too high. Tiger Noodle House is similar quality at a lower price. And now I'm irritated because it appears that they DO have a lunch special but it's probably dine-in only (not available through their kiosk). If their staff had told me that I would've spent half as much money vs the $30 bill for the main course and appetizer I purchased a la carte. I'll probably come back for the lunch special at some point because the food was good, but I'd never pay full price again because it's not really worth it.
google avatar

Richard F.

Yelp
This version of a famous restaurant chain is not worth a visit. It is nothing like the Chinatown version of this restaurant. The food appears to be dumbed down for more western palates. That is a mistake. The service is also atrocious. Horrible. They are kind but all inexperienced. I'm hopeful that they will improve in time. But I will not be back.
google avatar

Sue A.

Yelp
The food was great but the owners child was climbing over our table and running around the restaurant. Not an enjoyable atmosphere.

Yelp
The food was incredible. We got the chicken and mixed vegetables and it was divine. The boiled fish in spicy sauce was even better. Large portions and good service. Will definitely come back!

The food here was mind-blowing delicious ! Ive tried many Chinese restaurants and this is among the best I've ever had. The owner is extremely friendly as well as the staff who are very attentive. I would definitely come back here as often as possible!
