Larb Ubol, Popular Thai Restaurant in Hell’s Kitchen, Has Closed | Eater NY

"Critically praised Hell's Kitchen Thai restaurant Larb Ubol closed permanently this week; a sign posted on the front notes the business has closed and the phone has been disconnected, and a tipster told Eater that chef-owner Ratchanee Sumpatboon wasn’t able to renew the lease and is actively looking for another location on Ninth Avenue. Opened in 2013 to serve regional dishes from Isaan, it quickly gained attention from critics: the Times' Ligaya Mishan wrote that while the design and decor were make-do and seemingly assembled overnight, the food was the real focus and often delightful; Eater critic Robert Sietsema was similarly impressed, writing that it gave "a clearer picture of the cuisine at the ground level than more upscale spots." Eater critic Ryan Sutton wrote recently that it was still among the city's top Thai in 2018, especially in its execution of the duck version of its larb, the restaurant's namesake and specialty." - Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya

We were looking for something different and decided to try Larb Thai. While it’s a smaller spot, it has a great atmosphere. The staff are polite and incredibly friendly. As for the food, we weren’t sure what to expect, but we ended up discovering a new local favorite! We’ve now been back multiple times, including once around 8 PM near closing, and still received the same excellent service. The food is always hot, well-prepared, and packed with flavor. We’ve tried the Vegetable Spring Rolls, Dumplings, Steamed Pot Stickers, and Pad Thai with Chicken with Tofu and all absolutely fantastic! Every dish has been light, fresh, and flavorful. Larb Thai has officially become part of our regular dining rotation!

Tucked away in an unassuming Cleveland suburb, this small Thai restaurant is one of those rare finds that makes you feel like you're in on a delicious secret. The atmosphere is cozy and low-key, but the food is fantastic. The drunken noodles are a standout — perfectly chewy noodles stir-fried with just the right amount of heat and bold, savory flavor. If you like spice, this dish delivers without overwhelming. The yellow curry is another favorite with its creamy, sweet and savory gravy served with jasmine rice. Service is friendly and attentive, and prices are very reasonable given the generous portions. It’s the kind of place that earns loyal regulars.

Google
Loved the authentic Thai drunken noodles. With a special request for scallops. Very fair price. Mild spice as requested. I would love to go back but they are 125 miles away.

Google
I try many Thai restaurants but this one taste better not too sweet like another one. Quick service and nice

Google
This has become a regular spot for us. We rarely go outside our favorite Pad Thai and Fried Rice with a spring roll starter. It's just right. Nothing is in your face. Flavors are bright and deep. Fresh. At first you wonder about the portion but there's plenty! Great service in an intimate space. It's a craving that comes up now.

Google
Wonderful food and service! if you're looking for a cozy Thai restaurant with wonderful staff then look no further! The staff was very kind and welcoming which made the experience even better. The food was delicious! I recommend the red curry and the drunken noodles! For dessert you should definitely order the mango sticky rice! You definitely have to try this place if you're ever in Brunswick!

Restaurant decoration was so elegant. Lovely details everywhere from the paintings on the wall to the flower faucets in the bathroom. Food and drink was amazing! We ordered crying tiger--the beef was soooo tender and the sauce was unique and awesome! The duck dish was my favorite duck dish in a long time. Crispy breaded skin with tender duck meat and again, unique sauce. Out of this world! My partner had a basil drink and I had a mango martini, both were refreshing and very tasty. Sad that the little restaurant was kind of empty on a Saturday night when we visited. Hopefully more people can go out there and enjoy the super great Thai food.

Went to Larb Thai on a Friday evening with friends for the first time and we all really enjoyed it! My friend had a Cosmo and said it it was very good and the rest of us enjoyed our glasses of various house wines. I loved my Veggie Kaprow - the presentation was nice and the colors so vibrant & so tasty. Others had chicken teriyaki, a chicken curry and an eggplant dish and happy with their choices. Also had Crispy Fried Tofu which was great with the dipping sauce. The waitress was friendly and attentive- thank you for a nice evening!

Yelp
Continues to be an oasis in a food desert... quaint atmosphere, great service and you have the food!!

Yelp
Did takeaway which was well-packed and delicious. Can't speak to eating in, but the place looked nicely appointed and clean. I felt that the price for the quality of food was good, will definitely be back.

Yelp
The Pad Thai was really great! Everything was good. We got the pineapple fried rice and fried potstickers on our 1st visit and will be going back!

Yelp
This restaurant makes the customers feel unease telling them that they give a very little tip and should pay more. Kind of not wanting the customers to leave without more tips asking for more tips in cash although we have paid in credit. Often glancing at the table and giving a look like "you guys not done yet?" Also gossiping behind our back about the tips, they must think that we don't understand Thai.
google avatar

Julian C.

Yelp
Carefully prepared, authentic food. I order the spring rolls, Tom kha soup and pad Thai anytime I'm in Brunswick.
google avatar

Yelp
Been driving past this place for years, just gave a try for the first time. Don't understand why it took me so long to try it. Maybe it's the Tai connection, but I don't know what that means. To me, this was very good Asian food. Started with spring rolls. 3 came to an order. They were served crazy fast, crazy hot, and crazy tastey! Entre was the Crying Tiger. Seemed like flank steak with a lime cilantro chutney on the side. The sauce was rich and awesome! Daughter got the drunken noodle with chicken. Both were very good, though neither was spicy. Place is really small though intimate. Nice little bar. Had the G2 saki, which I will not be doing again. Regardless, my bad, place good. Will come back again and ask to throw some heat in the meat!

Yelp
We ordered assorted appetizers Thai dumplings - good. Kinda small. Sauce is spicy Wonton soup - good. Unusual. It contained cabbage and pea pods Fried Wonton - very good. The plum sauce is delicious Satay - good. Cucumber sauce is good. Peanut sauce is fine We may come back for dinner sometime

Yelp
had another great meal at Larb Thai in Brunswick. their Me Krob is sweet and tangy and addicting. Their spicy cashew chicken. was near perfect. always can use more cashews. We struggled with the Tiger Cry Beef. a bit fatty and the sauce had a bizarre taste. The spring rolls with crunchy and spot on. finally my wife's Lychee Martini was fantastic. #thai #thaifood #eatlocalohio

Yelp
Went to the restaurant on a Saturday at 8:30pm. We were the only ppl in the place. Overall the food was very good but I must give it only 2 Stars since my husband got terrible food poisoning soon after leaving the restaurant. I'm convinced the reason was undercooked chicken since the woman who took our order insisted on trying to memorize our order & did not write anything down. After we finished ordering, she tried to recount our order to us and got it wrong. We corrected her and I was confident that our order would be messed up. The first mistake was I (being vegetarian), ordered vegetable spring rolls- and I'm convinced there was meat in it. My son ate some too and said there was definitely meat in it. OK- not the worst thing but I unintentionally ate meat and wasn't happy about that. The entrees came out and immediately we saw she messed up the dinner order. My husband got pad thai instead of pad see ew. So she took it back and they speedily cooked the correct meal. They cooked it surprisingly fast - and most likely the chicken wasn't thoroughly cooked enough. My husband felt sick within 15 mins of leaving and it ruined the last leg of our trip. Thankfully there was a Meijer nearby that was open late since my husband hung out in their bathroom for an hour. He was dry heaving in the car- was shaking uncontrollably and could barely walk. I even considered bringing him to a hospital! We had to get a different (closer) hotel to stay at and lose our $ at the one we booked which was farther away. It was a very costly and tortuous meal for my husband. And this all could have been prevented if only the lady WROTE down our orders!!!!

Yelp
Authentic taste! My boyfriend loves the pad see ew and papaya salad - every day any day this is his go to! This is the closest authentic flavor to Thai food that is located in Medina in my opinion - others is a very close 2nd but of course this is just my opinion Just be aware the dumplings are closer to the shu Mai that you get during dim sum - they are a bit dry in my opinion - same goes for the fried wontons but at least they come with sauces to dip in. Larb chicken and pad see ew is flavorful Papaya salads are fresh and careful of how hot you want it to be - they will cater it to your preference. I tried once the noodle soups and they weren't as flavorful as I would like them to be. Love their Thai ice tea!! This is a family own business and hope they stay around for a very long time!

Yelp
Ordered the spring roll and chicken pad Thai. Great service and food tasted amazing. Small place. Recommend a reservation.

David C.

Yelp
Place is much smaller than what it appears on the outside. Food was really good. 3 stars is for service. We felt rushed and then asked to leave before we even finished our drinks to make room for other customers. We definitely weren't camping and the bill wasn't cheap so frustrating that's how our experience ended.
google avatar

Cheng Z.

Yelp
Still my favorite Thai food in the Cleveland area. We mostly go there when we also need to make a trip to Costco (which is also in Strongsville). Their pad Thai is the best I've ever had. Others dishes are okay too.

Joe B.

Yelp
Awesome spot, lucky to have a restaurant like this close to Medina! I've been there twice now and will be back soon.

Todd H.

Yelp
Used to be great. Now mediocre food. Overpriced apps and none too friendly service. Not worth the drive.
google avatar

Chad B.

Yelp
The food and service was great. The only issue I have with my experience there is that they have lunch prices, and I went during lunch time. When ordering. I got charged dinner prices. So please specify when you go there for lunch that you want lunch prices.

Carol J.

Yelp
Just found this gem of a restaurant after moving back from Florida. Authentic Thai food served by friendly staff and a quiet music/relaxing setting. We had the Pad Woon Sen and Drunken Noodles both with Shrimp. You can adjust chili spice levels up or down. See the legend on the menu.

Sue H.

Yelp
Great food, great service always enjoy the Larb Salad. Menu has a great selection of delicious dishes.
google avatar

Tommy G.

Yelp
Had a nice evening with friends. The vegetable dumplings appetizer was tremendous. My wife is vegetarian and she was very happy as was I. All the entrees and drinks were very good. Will be back again soon!
google avatar

Jenny Y.

Yelp
This Thai restaurant left me without words!! This is the best Thai place I've had in the states... I'm from California and there are plenty of Thai restaurants that I've tried. However, this place had the best Pad See Ew I've had except in Thailand. We also ordered the Pad Thai which was standard. The noodles were perfectly stir fried and meats weren't over cooked until dry like most restaurants. FYI you only get 3 shrimps if you get a noodle dish with shrimp. Portions were a bit small, but that might be because we came during lunch; there was prince differences for lunch and dinner. Def would recommend to try this place if you are looking for authentic Thai food!

Yelp
Let me just start by saying that I have been craving Pho for WEEKS and it's so hard to find good pho. You know, very thinly shaved raw beef dropped into an amazing brother, bean sprouts, herbs and jalapeño. So I got the beef pho and I was thoroughly disappointed. The broth just wasn't hitting it, no spice of jalapeños or any spice for that matter and the beef was just all fat. I was in a big debate with the pho and trying the crying tiger which I've heard people RAVE about and I am a little remorseful that I didn't go with the crying tiger. My girlfriend have the Tom yum noodle and she went CRAZY for it. She said it was absolutely phenomenal. And oh gosh, was it beautiful. We decided that we are going to go back for dinner so I can try the crying tiger. I will post another review when we go!

Yelp
Clean and we didn't leave one morsel of food in our plates. We left this review up to our daughter. I let her give the rating because she wasn't happy to be here. She gave it a 4.5, I give fives if no one can find a bad thing to say. And no one could. We will be back for sure.
google avatar

Jared R.

Yelp
Best Thai food around! Family owned - they have all the Thai favorites - Pad Thai, Currys and Bubble Tea with real Boba!
google avatar

Lazar V.

Yelp
I have nothing bad to say about Larb Thai Restaurant. The Thai food here is one of the best I've had in the area. Authentic taste, clean place and very nice staff. It doesn't look like much from the outside but Larb is a hidden gem located off of a busy street. I look forward to eating here again.
google avatar

Anthony C.

Yelp
Great Thai carry out! The pad Thai was very good..not a ton of shrimp but they were big and seemed fresh. The peanut dressing on the salad was delicious. I would pass on the Edamame next time. They don't seem to hold up to carry out that well and needed more salt.
google avatar

Aashiq D.

Yelp
We got takeout with Tom Kha (shrimp, medium spicy), Tofu Larb (spicy), and Tofu Kaprow (spicy). Our order was ready on time, and their curbside pickup was fast and convenient. The flavors were really on point, not many concessions made to the western palate. The dishes we wanted spicy were hot, but not overwhelming. The shrimp in the Tom Kha were large and tasted fresh. We confirmed while ordering that the vegetarian dishes shouldn't have fish sauce or shrimp paste, and based on the flavor, pretty confident that they followed through. Compares favorably to Thai restaurants in any major city. Come out and support a great family business! Our only issue is that we got a small Tom Kha, even though we were billed for a large one.

Yelp
My first visit here. The building itself is quaint and cozy with some nice design and decor features which give it a real Thai feel. I had the Pad Thai, which is my go-to order at a new Thai spot. It was spot on and the portion was pretty big. Will definitely come back!

Chico T.

Yelp
I had high expectations based on the reviews. Unfortunately, I've had food matching my tastes better. The staff was friendly. The establishment is clean and inviting. I wish I would've liked it better.

Yelp
We've been to Larb twice in the last two weeks and it's been just delicious each time. They have a small bar with about 8 stools, a few high tops, and table seating for about 30. The decor is very pleasing - black and copper and wood tones. There's a full bar selection and happy hour specials Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. In the warmer months the small patio is open. There is a small private parking lot. Now, the food. I really love Thai food, and my husband has grown to love it. The taste and flavor combinations at Larb are superior to any others I've had in the Cleveland area. Tonight I started with the Thom Yum soup which is a staple at most Thai restaurants. It was on par to other Thai restaurants. For my dinner I had the panang curry with seafood (shrimp, scallop, and squid). The panang sauce here is more peanutty than other places I've tried, which I like. The accompanying herbs and vegetables were fresh, and the seafood was tender. My husband got the beef kaprow, which is similar to beef basil - the sauce was thicker and spicier, though. The beef was very tender and not at all fatty. The restrooms are clean and the staff is friendly and gracious. You feel as if you're being welcomed into their home as an honored guest. The ambiance is warm and comfortable.
google avatar

Dalena B.

Yelp
Great food. Love everything on their menu. I always get their fish fried pancake as appetizers. Called Todd munn
google avatar

Rory J.

Yelp
Closes early. Panang chicken was very good. Spice level was just right. Decent environment. Friendly staff. Plenty of parking. Road frontage is under construction. Don't miss the driveway!
google avatar

Chelsea Z.

Yelp
So authentic so yummy. Coconut ice cream is everyone's favorite. I'm a frequent customer. Love the good work they're doing here.
google avatar

Henleee E.

Yelp
We called for a reservation and was seated when we arrived. Note that reservations were required. We ordered Thai Iced Tea, Pineapple Fried Rice, Pad See Ew with Beef, Papaya Salad and Mango Sticky Rice for dessert. The only item that could be better was the Pineapple Fried Rice. We have had this rice dish at other Thai restaurants where it had more flavor and pineapples. The Pad See Ew was very flavorful and had sufficient sauce. The salad was a bit spicy for my wife (we had asked for no spice) but the other 2 of us enjoyed it. If we lived in the area, we would return but maybe not order that rice dish.
google avatar

Kristine S.

Yelp
So VERY disappointed and will never go back. My order is Always Pad Thai, I've eaten here plenty of times (dine in) as I pass through Brunswick. My Go too is Sweet Mango. And today's visit confirmed that I should have just waited until I was done with my job and gone to Sweet Mango. I paid the same lunch price as dine in, and literally got 1/2 the amount of food, that was barely room temp. I had said take out, than immediately said I'd just dine in the traffic was jammed up. I was told "I already rang it up" I said well I can just pay the difference she looked at me like I had 3 heads and went to the back. A few moments later comes out with a small (left over size container) with my "lunch" I just sat outside on the picnic table, no big deal, but when I opened it I was truly shocked, and to top it off the food was barely warm, scarcely and I MEAN SCARCELY, any chicken, (very tiny cut, looks like more than there is, they were barely bite size) low flavor. Many times I have my 4 yr old grandson and can share with him, This would have never been able to happen. What I did get was a nice gut ache. I Will NEVER go back. And would say if you want Good portions, great flavor, friendly associates, Go to Sweet Mango.
google avatar

Patty M.

Yelp
Very cute atmosphere, relaxing. Staff very friendly and courteous. Food was delicious. Started off with Tiger Salad. Recommend the peanut dressing. We had the Duck Kaprow and Pad Thai that were both very tasty. Highly recommend. We will definitely be back!!

Robert M.

Yelp
Very good Thai food would recommend not too spicy but absolutely delicious. Customer service is great. I recommend the restaurant highly.

Debra S.

Yelp
Delicious! Great menu selections, and really good food! We got takeout, and even with the travel time, the food was excellent.
google avatar

Dave P.

Yelp
I love this place. The people are so nice and the food is great. Not just delicious, but well presented too. A good mix of Thai deliciousness that has never disappointed. I have tried 3 entrees: the red curry, duck noodles and eggplant with tofu. Lunch portions are just right. I like the simple interior style and beautiful concrete floor. Sat at a window seat on a cold winter day without feeling a draft. I keep hearing there aren't good restaurants in Brunswick. Go here and you won't believe that lie any longer. Good service. Staff is attentive with tea or water refills.
google avatar

Kristen M.

Yelp
We came here based on the reviews. It wasn't bad, but not what I was expecting from what I had read. The place was small and is more suited for carry out or lunch rather than sitting to enjoy an evening out. I'd imagine the door opening would make it quite uncomfortable in the cold months. The staff was barely attentive and didn't seem to care if we were there or not. The bar offerings were minimal. There were several bottled beers. We ordered a couple apps, an order of Thai dumplings and the spring rolls, and then had the pad Thai and beef Thai pho. The dipping sauces that came with the apps were nice. I couldn't taste the fillings of either. The food overall had very little flavor and I felt unsatisfied, like I could have eaten again. It really wasn't filling for what we spent. The ingredients were good, it just wasn't a wow for me from any aspect.
google avatar

Dana E.

Yelp
The food and service were top notch. Place was busy on a Saturday night but the staff was so kind, gracious and set expectations of the wait ahead of time. All I can say is it was well worth the wait. Some of the best and most authentic Thai I've had in Cleveland; I'll definitely be back! Had the Thom Yum with shrimp, Thom Kha with chicken, Drunken Noodles (spicy), Crying Tiger, spring rolls and pineapple fried rice. Everything was delicious but the Crying Tiger is the die for.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is good but pricey for the amount of food you get. Only place I can find a lychee martini
google avatar

Yelp
Phenomenal Thai food. The inside is a little tight, but I always expect and kind of appreciate that about restaurants such as this one. Service is always prompt and are a pleasure to deal with
google avatar

Matt G.

Yelp
I've been here for lunch several times, food is good. At lunch time, service is quick, I don't think there's ever been more than one other party there. I went there for dinner Friday night, party of 6 and experienced the worst service I've ever had at a restaurant. Server was so rushed, when she brought our food, I asked " can I get some chop sticks and sriracha please?", she held her finger up and walked away to ring out a take out order. Can't believe how rude this woman was. She brought me chop sticks after ringing out the 2 people there to pick up takeout and then went to take orders from another table. Mind you, they were not busy, there were only 2 other tables there. Sadly, with this poor service I won't be back. Pleas work on your customer service and basic human decency.

Yelp
OMG‼ is what I have to say about this cute & quaint restaurant. I've been living in Brunswick for about 2yrs. & always passed this place up for no apparent reason knowing I enjoy all ethnicities of food, and crazy part I'm only 1 mile away, shame on me. I finally had enough passing this place up. My wife and I walked in and was seated right away. The also have patio seating, but I really enjoyed sitting inside due to the fact that it is very intimate in my opinion and cool vibe, nice ambiance. Time to order! We started off by ordering G Sake.. Sake was good came in a black bottle & we kept the bottle for souvenirs ha! My wife ordered the Crying Tiger and I ordered the Shrimp Pad Thai, *put forks in mouths* WoW! we were overly surprised and pissed off as we should have been pursued this place. No lacking in flavor made to perfection! Everything was perfect we couldn't stop eating in between breaks it was like "crack rock" was one of the ingredients, ADDICTIVE! It was served on these modern made plates which was super nice and we a had a rack of sauces and oils from mild to spicy that made the food taste even more like "crack" Yes, I reference certain foods to crack!! I'm an addict for good foods. So, I close this by saying.. please try this place out, give it a try even when u read bad reviews. Hey, you can't please everybody, so have ur own experience and try out different things on the menu until u find ur "crack rock" fix before u give a bad review. And, Yes! I, We, will be back for more.
google avatar

Patty Caraballo M.

Yelp
We ordered the vegetable dumplings, the Tom yum soup, the veggie spring rolls and the peanut curry with veggies and tofu. Everything came out hot and right on time. The service was great, asking questions when they should and making sure we had what we needed. The prices are very good for the large portion sizes. I had my kids so I couldn't pull my phone out to take photos. I would return in a heartbeat. Delicious!
google avatar

Brooke B.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I dined in at 4:30 on a Sunday. Our server was very friendly. The music and atmosphere were nice. We ordered the Thai dumpling as an appetizer and they came out piping hot and delicious. The dipping sauce was very good. He ordered chicken teriyaki and I ordered the pineapple fried rice. Both were tasty, both came out of the kitchen right away, I even remarked "wow that was fast!". It's rare to eat out somewhere with no mistakes made by either the server or kitchen. I've gotten used to dealing with lukewarm food or waiting 15 minutes or being served an incorrect dish/ having something missing from my order. This place was totally solid all around. Come to think of it, it might be one of my first totally deserved five star reviews. They deserve your business.
google avatar

Chad D.

Yelp
I was very delighted to find good Thai food in the suburbs. Typically you find higher price- lower quality places in the 'burbs, but that is not the case with Larb! The table shared the chicken satay and spring roll appetizers. Nice flavor and presentation. The spring rolls could have been a little bigger, but overall they were very good. For my entree I chose the green chicken curry, and it was one if the best I ever had. Perfect portion size and a nice balance of heat & flavor! My wife had the pad thai and my son had the red chicken curry. Both enjoyed! Finished it off with a sweet green boba tea. Will definitely go back for sure!
