We dine at Larks every year when a group of friends visits Ashland/OSF. It is generally the social highlight of our trip. Over Labor Day weekend 2023, I ate here in a group of 7 on a Saturday night.
Food at Larks is universally excellent. This is also a restaurant where the kitchen will work with you--no matter how annoying your list of allergies--to help you enjoy your meal. I love their emphasis on local sources, and the burrata & heirloom tomato dish here is the best in Ashland (as far as we can tell from trying such dishes everywhere we go.) :)
This year, perhaps because it was Saturday, or because we dined a bit later (no show to hurry off to), they were almost out of the featured salmon dish when we were being told the specials. Our table got lucky, and two more plates were available for those who wanted that fish. Phew! I don't recall having two different specials gone/almost gone on earlier visits, so I think that was a fluke, possibly correlated to the Shakespeare Festival suffering to fill seats this season?
While I always enjoy Larks, and my pasta this time was excellent, I was disappointed that multiple dishes I would have liked involved pork ingredients, but I avoid all pork and shellfish. (There was a rabbit croquette appetizer I would have loved, but the rabbit itself was seared in pork fat, I think the server said.) This may be a one off, like running out of fish, but I will review again if it becomes harder for my dietary needs to be met at this otherwise favorite restaurant of mine.
I found the server at Larks to be wonderful; service was professional and polished, as one hopes to find in a fine dining establishment. As I commented in my review of nearby Alchemy, Ashland seems to have kept trained wait staff, post-pandemic, in a way that other destinations I've visited in 2022-23 could not. Certainly I have seen a lot more service failures at expensive restaurants in New England, where I live.
I love the ambience at Larks, and I have started staying at the Ashland Springs Hotel on some visits in part because of my love of its old fashioned decor. Both the hotel and the restaurant are an easy, relatively flat walk to the OSF theatres, as well, which is a huge factor for those of us with mobility challenges! (Tip: take the hotel lobby elevator up to the third floor and exit toward the back to go through the hotel parking lot, and you won't have to climb the hill to be level with the Allen or Thomas Theatres!)
