Cash-only, family-run since the early 1980s, Larry & Joe’s is pure Journal Square nostalgia: thin, crisp pies, honest toppings, and a famed chicken parm. Frequently mentioned by local roundups, it’s a no-frills classic that still hits the spot.

One of jersey city's best finds is LARRY & JOE's wow amazing traditional Italian food and pizza. They have a great gravy and everything is always fresh. They beat out alot of the local competition with ease. A must try great lunch dinner options. The menu in the pic is the latest with the updated prices.

It's a small Italian eatery where mostly local crowd goes. Food here tastes like homemade, servers are very kind. This place has seen better days, I am sure. Surely be back for more here

We were in town to stop by at the neighboring Filipino bakery, and decided to stop into Larry and Joe's for pizza. This small but quaint restaurant is family-owned which we loved. We got a 16-inch mushroom, pepperoni and sausage pizza. We really appreciated that it was made fresh to order and came out smoking hot. Our pizza was delicious and the crust was great. We dined in, but many patrons were getting takeout orders. We'd highly recommend this spot!

The restaurant has a cozy, inviting vibe, but unfortunately, the food didn’t live up to expectations. We ordered a 12-inch pizza priced at $24, which felt steep considering the quality. Even though the place was nearly empty, it took around 30 minutes for the pizza to arrive. When it finally did, the crust was quite tough and overly chewy, making it difficult to enjoy. We struggled to finish it, and it didn’t sit well afterward. Overall, it was a disappointing experience, and I don’t see myself returning.

I asked for some olive oil for the bread, and the woman came out and said, "You can't find that anywhere." I asked if it was family's, and she said it was from her Aunt's in Greece. 🥰 It was lovely, and so was she. Great little spot for some authentic Mediterranean comfort food.

Google
The best pizzeria in jersey city and that’s a fact! Fresh every single time and family owned for over 30 years!!! Baked ziti, pizza, chicken dishes, pasta dishes all are amazing. If you have never tried Larry and joes you will not regret it!! It’s literally my favorite pizzeria in Jersey city. There’s a reason they’re always busy! A staple in Jersey City. I have been coming here since I was in high school. Literally the best, trust me!!!!!

One of the last, true family owned restaurants in town. Nowadays everything is a corporation with a customer service office 8 states away. You've read the other reviews: great food, great prices, great service. Christina and her two boys have been providing just that for decades. God bless them. NOTE: to the new generation leaving 1 star because "the food took too long" and were personally inconvenienced to have to wait 5 minutes too long... yeah folks, great food that's made from scratch takes time. I know you're used to having your frozen, low-calorie-high-carb foods microwaved and served within 3 seconds. Welp, real food takes a bit longer to prepare.

Amazing pizza in JC! I’ve been in a lot of pizzas restaurants in Downtown JC, Heights and Hoboken and this is by far the best place! Family owned since the 70’s. Give it a try! Only Cash. $15 big pepperoni pie.

Yelp
(Tookout 04/12/2025 SA @ 5:00pm): The love was real for Larry & Joe's neighborhood pizzeria! In my quest to explore the various cuisine scenes throughout Jersey City and specifically the Heights, I found a new pizza place for me in Larry & Joe's Pizzeria. If you knew me, I always considered pizza as a separate food group aka the sixth main food group! Established in 1982, this small family-owned cash-only restaurant has been a beloved neighborhood staple known for its authentic Italian pizza along with other Italian dishes and a cozy and family-friendly atmosphere. With a glut of pizza joints, how would this pizzeria from Larry and Joe compare to others I've tried in the neighborhood!? PURCHASE [ONION RINGS/STRAWS/STRINGS ALERT - 3.5 of 5.0 STARS] Onion Rings ($5.00): A large container filled with oddly similarly-sized rings, these were hot, medium-browned, semi-crunchy, and didn't have a tendency to crumble when bitten into while the onion ring (not sweet Maui) stayed intact. They were slightly oily, no dipping sauce given, and surprisingly good. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=48&select=Fo3zPbAgICQdKvznZJsvGA Mozzarella Sticks 6pc ($7.00): Simple finger-sized medium-browned cheese sticks with homemade marinara dipping sauce, we enjoyed them but nothing special to report. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=72&select=XdrF2nAAywvu13PpkK4mIQ Eggplant Parmigiana Sandwich ($10.00): If you knew me, this was my go-to Italian sandwich, and it didn't disappoint. Filled with plenty of thin but meaty slices of breaded eggplant, marinara sauce, and gooey mozzarella cheese crammed between a lightly-toasted bun, this was a hearty meal that stuck to your ribs - oof! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=72&select=8R68F6zBwAxy4vcpvi8wzw Chicken Parmigiana Sandwich ($10.00): My friend opted for this lightly-toasted bun stuffed with many thin but meaty slices of breaded chicken, marinara sauce, and gooey mozzarella cheese, it was good but not better than the eggplant! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=72&select=p7slICln5ZVWgsqatlY8WQ 18" 8pc Broccoli Pizza + Mushrooms ($19.00 + $3.00): Still in the throes of no-meat during Lent, we chose this interesting option with an additional topping for more flavor. This was a massive pizza with a ton of fresh toppings, mozzarella cheese, and tomato sauce with an incredibly crispy yet soft crust. This was simply an impressive pie, indeed! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=72&select=-5ich-E3lcSWgrzXYPVisA SERVICE I called ahead and placed my order with a friendly gentleman whose name I couldn't recall. I was told it would be ready within 45 minutes which was fine. I arrived a bit early to a very busy pizzeria, to which I waited an extra 15 minutes before my order was done and packed up. No worries, as I watched TV and simply observed the "mayhem" in this place. I wasn't in a hurry, so all was good - grazie! PARKING (Street; N/A this instance) This was an easy flat 20-minute walk from my friend's place. Otherwise, there appeared to be plenty of spots (no known private lot) along the main drag of Newark Ave. and all surrounding roads - 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A simple interior layout https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=48&select=YA57QUy6J9z38Y_Kkkay_A with a tidy dining area of booths and a couple of small tables, a bar table along one wall, and the order counter that looked into the kitchen at the back. Several framed pictures of family members adorned a brick wall while the menu https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=72&select=4AsL8gHDPNd5MobPtL3MyA was posted on another wall. Plenty of natural lighting came through the front window and door while soul-sucking fluorescent electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. There was one TV (volume on) while there wasn't any background music. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=48&select=4WAmbzYptvChB1edodHcSQ ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL Larry & Joe's Pizzeria was an incredible example of a close-knit family eatery that was lovingly supported by the neighborhood and vice versa, which gave me the warm-and-fuzzies. From tasty food, large portions, reasonable prices, good menu selection, and wonderful service, this place hit all of the feels. And, I always loved supporting small businesses whenever possible. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $54.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). Sadly, they were CASH ONLY (my only knock), so no AMEX! 4.0 STARS

Yelp
Everything I eat here is delicious. Good service. Quick. This time was a chicken gyro. Most times it's the pizza or chicken parm Cash only tho... keep that in mind. There's an ATM in the establishment tho.

Lisa A.

Yelp
The food is amazing. My go to is the grilled chicken Greek salad. They really make it with love !

Yelp
No frills, just a great neighborhood pizza joint with great prices. Solid hot subs as well. In the era of $80 doordash orders and $25 artisan pizzas (which I'm extremely guilty of perpetuating), I'm grateful for places like this.

Yelp
Somewhat of a hidden treasure - what a surprise this unassuming hole in the wall located in Journal Square was. I find some of the best pizzerias don't have a whole line of precooked pies of every type you can imagine. Instead, there are just plain pies ready to be assembled into made to order slices. That's what this place does. The pizza has a savory sauce, and the pizza isn't greasy. The crust is just a bit thicker than a New York slice - but you barely notice (and I hate thick crust) since it is a crunchy -on-the -outside- and-soft -on -the -inside delight. This is not the place to come for your bacon cheeseburger pizza abominations. The owners stick to the classics: plain, white, pepperoni, sausage, peppers and similar. I appreciate those kind of pizza purists and wish there was more of them.

Yelp
Yours typical old school neighborhood mom and pop pizza spot thats been around for decades. Awesome owners and consistently outstanding food. Remember, get a slice while you wait for your food and experience the local characters thats come in and out. Just avoid it when Dickenson HS is out for lunch
google avatar

Yelp
We really enjoyed this longtime staple of the neighborhood. The pizza had a nice solid undercarriage with minimal flop and the flavor profile was spot on with a nice sauce to cheese to crust ratio. It's a cash only place, but no more than pocket money makes it a perfect once a week go-to pizza shop for me. Larry and Joe's has a cool family feel and definitely rates a strong 4.2!
google avatar

Yelp
A small place with a few tables, cash only. The food was really unexpectedly good. I ordered the chicken Parm, the bread was toasted perfectly, chicken is thinly sliced so it's not dry in the middle. Great place if you are feeling Italian in journal square.
google avatar

Rinkie B.

Yelp
We order from this place more often then we think . I have not been to the restaurant but always order. Their delivery is very prompt. The staff are polite and friendly. Their pizza is good and I am sure they can do better. For me the pizza was little dry. But I still recommend this place.

Yelp
The chicken parm game has officially been changed forever. How have I not tried Larry and Joe's sooner? It's safe to say I won't be going anywhere else for chicken parm in JC anytime soon. A sandwich is huge and is $7.25. You can easily share it. Chicken parm dinners at other take out Italian spots around (delenio, rustique) are easily ten dollars more and come with way less chicken. So needless to say, it's a solid deal. And most importantly, the taste and quality is insanely good. The chicken is perfectly crispy, the bread soft and flaky, the sauce rich with garlic and flavor and everything is topped with a ton of mozz cheese. Next time I'd love to try a slice of pizza. The slices looked huge and cheesy and like everything I could ever need. This is a no frills spot so don't expect stellar service - especially during the lunch time crowds. It's hard to find napkins and utensils and I think they should swap the flimsy plastic cutlery for some regular silverware. My sandwich was a little messy and very hard to cut. But alas, none of that really matters. The chicken parm here is something special and that's all you really need to know.

Yelp
Talk about a hidden gem. This place is quite unassuming on the outside but the pizza is damn good and very well priced! It's the best pizza I've had in JC
google avatar

Nick K.

Yelp
I have been ordering pies from this establishment for years and must say this is a true hidden gem. Beats all the simple pizza joints in downtown JC (except for the likes of razza or porta).
google avatar

Chrissy D.

Yelp
Very friendly staff and very good pizza! Reasonable prices and definitely a must try. Highly recommend

Yelp
Great cheese and amazing sauce!! The crust was perfecto! Getting a pie next time! Having had a slice like this in forever!
google avatar

Fernessa U.

Yelp
great pizza overall with decent pricing. just know that if you like mushroom pizza, this is NOT the place to go. they use the canned mushrooms and dump them over top a plain slice- I personally love when my mushrooms are fresh and cooked with the pizza.
google avatar

Joely R.

Yelp
Cash only. Amazing pizza. The chicken Caesar salad is my absolutely favorite ever. Tip: the place gets super busy during lunch time if the students are in school.
google avatar

Sarah P.

Yelp
You can't beat the value you get at Larry and Joe's! $2 slices the size of my torso and $4.50 baked ziti. This place is always busy and they make everything to order so it's probably best to call your order ahead. The portions were huge and the food was amazing, took the best nap of my life after. Definitely try this place out, it's a Jersey city STAPLE! It doesn't look like much but you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Hoover L.

Yelp
I come for the chicken parm hero on the regular... I've tried the other chicken parms around JC but I like this place!
google avatar

Phil S.

Yelp
Stopped in for a slice ($2.50) on a Saturday afternoon and was served one from a fresh pie right away. Very typical pizzeria with 4 tables and a TV.
google avatar

D R.

Yelp
They're Chicken Cesar salad is one of my favorites. They serve a great amount for a great price. Best of all , they are a family owned business and their service is a 10/10. I Highly recommend !

F K.

Yelp
Pizza is tasteless meatball Parm sandwich is disgusting the meatballs don't look like ground beef I will NOT be ordering from them again.
google avatar

Maeve M.

Yelp
5 stars simply because this pizza place deserves it!!! Best slice in Jersey City, generous proportions and great sauce.
google avatar

Juan C.

Yelp
Caesar salad - big portion, get the sauce in the side cause they drown it Chicken park sandwich is one of the best I've ever had. Good amount of cheese and meat A regular slice there is great. They do not focus on other pizzas with toppings nor do they promote it. You have to ask for a topping. They can make anything you ask for. They have been there for a very long time. 2nd -3rd generation own and ran Overall, great place.

Ro R.

Yelp
Larry and joes has really been going down hill, where do it start? From their delivery times to their horrible customer service we experienced recently. We placed an order for delivery and we had to call back after an hour and 20 minutes for them to tell me my sons mozzarella sticks weren't available, must be the irresponsable people they have taking orders at the front, unfortunately won't be ordering here anymore long time customer lost. Young lady had the nerve to tell my wife "oh yeah I was just about to call you" do better guys or you're going to keep serving nothing but them HS kids.
google avatar

Marie M.

Yelp
Love this place. Super reasonable prices and really good food. Funny! I ran into Mayor Fulop one time when I was picking up takeout. He was picking up as well. I moved from Jersey City. So when I visit, I order a lot and freeze it.
google avatar

Sam B.

Yelp
This is hands down one of my favorite pizzeria's in jersey city. I've been eating here for years and the food has always been tasty and consistent. Staff is very friendly and service is pretty good. Some of my favorite dishes here are the grilled chicken Greek salad with oil and vinegar or balsamic depending on what your craving, grilled chicken francaise with penne and peppers and onions, grilled chicken with mozzarella on garlic bread, and all their wraps either grilled chicken or cheesesteak. I love the pizza here, this is one of my top 5 places on jersey city to plain a plain slice. Best part of it all are the prices which are very reasonable for the area and the quality. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Natalie H.

Yelp
Super ecstatic that I live only a few blocks away from here. This place is a very authentic pizza joint in JSQ. I wish the place accepted cards since I never have cash on hand. The exterior facade could use a pick-me-up which is why it took me over 2 years to try the place out. As for the pizza and crust, well, it's out of this world. I recommend this place to you!
google avatar

lovextina c.

Yelp
This place is is so good, very old school but worth having to call to place your order!
google avatar

Danielle M.

Yelp
Pretty much everything you could ask for in a local pizza joint. Good pizza, good prices, friendly staff. The pizza is definitely fresh- I called in for a takeout pizza and walked over. By the time I get there, they were putting my pizza in the oven and it was still nice and hot when I got home. Good assortment of spices to put on your pizza (garlic, oregano, pepper flakes, pepper), and enough so that you it won't run out. The crust is crispy and the cheese is generous. Plain pie is $12.50- CASH ONLY!
google avatar

roderick A.

Yelp
Let's face it, it is very rare to find a great slice of pizza. The only great ones I know are Benny Tudino's and Up Town Pizzeria, both in Hoboken. In Jersey City, there is one very good place for slices: Larry & Joe's Pizzeria. a very small place, there are only 5-6 little tables, and a long counter for people to eat. there's a high school nearby, so forget coming here from 11am to 1pm. At night, when the area is less busy and there's a lot more parking, is the best time to come here. I wholeheartedly recommend the meatball pizza pie. Its truly delish, and the meatballs are very sweet and tasty, like me. Prices aren't bad either, with $12 the most you'll pay for a pie with extras.
google avatar

Brandon E.

Yelp
I can only speak for the pizza here. Pretty average hole-in-the-wall pizza joint. The plain slices are pretty good, not the best I've ever had but certainly far from the worst. For 2.5 days of jury duty this is where I chose to eat. The guy at the front counter is friendly. For 2 slices and a can of soda it was $5 not a bad deal. At lunch time though try to avoid 12:30ish that is when the high school next store rushes the place and 30-40 kids try to cram in the small space, it's chaotic. I would grab your food and go. If I get stuck on jury duty again in 3 years I will likely be back here. A-OK.
google avatar

Jonathan E.

Yelp
Homey Delightful Surprise I have had many good pizzas, but this place deserves a good review because the business and the food was well above my expectations. By the looks of the place I did not have the highest expectations (from pictures and from outside). However once you go in, the people and the way they do business just gives you a feeling of sincerity. The service was fast, friendly and the pizza was fresh. I have to add the crust was perfect, just how I like the crust on the average italian/American pizza. I got the pizza with all the toppings and it was really good. I do recommend to take off the beef slices. It was too meaty/thick to go with the soft cheese. If you're looking for a quick bite in the area (which I was) don't hesitate. I was hungry and now I am perfectly satisfied.
google avatar

Yelp
People are waxing poetically here because this is the best pizzeria in this section of Jersey City. More over, it's one of the best places for food in general around here, where the options generally suck. Being around the corner from me, I've grabbed a slice or ordered a pie via take out plenty of times; never tried the Italian food, more on that in a second. The people who run it are friendly enough, and they get orders ready in a reasonable amount of time. They also like watching college basketball, so it's usually on the TV. I haven't tried the Italian food--only the pizza--and what I've seen is that Larry & Joe's is a decent place to pick up a pizza in an area with no other. If you order by the slice, you get a giant (Bronx) slice for $2. That's a pretty stellar deal, and I'm bumping this up a star for that alone. The crust has a mild bready flavor and come up pretty crisp and sturdy given its size. The cheese is decent quality and not too oily. The sauce is sweet and chunky, and is the main reason I don't eat here all that often; when you get a pie with meatballs however, the sweetness is balanced by the spices and the meat. It's one of the only times I'd say a sauce needs some herbs added to it. It has held me back from ordering the Italian food here too, though generally I can make most of what's on the menu at home anyway. Overall the pizza here is still decent and the prices are low, which are enough to make me patronize them. If you're in the area and need a slice, stop by.

Yelp
Larry and Joe's was a place that I randomly found while I was walking around in my neighborhood. It's Jersey City's little secret. Located next to the courthouse and always open; rain, snow or shine. L&J offers everything from pizza, pasta, salads, sandwiches, etc. My favorite dish would have to be the lasagna just because it's so delicious, a large portion and reasonably priced. The only reason I don't give them a five star is because they only take cash which can be inconvenient for some people like myself, who don't carry cash all the time. Lastly my recommendation would be to call first to place your order because if you get there and want to do take out the wait time is between 15 to 25 minutes. I love L&J no matter what though and it shows since I've been mayor thru yelp and foursquare a few times now. I go there often!!! It's my little neighborhood gem.

Yelp
My favorite local joint. The portions are great and the prices are reasonable. I typically do a full pie on a night of the week where I don't want to cook and take the rest in to work. It's ready promptly and a short enough walk home that it stays nice and hot. Cash only so be sure to have some on hand. Although I am sure the other items on the menu are great, I tend to just do a large pepperoni pie. Give them a shot. The staff is friendly, as well.

Jasmine L.

Yelp
The pasta is very delicious and portions are generous. But I haven't had great interactions with the staff. We ordered wings for delivery and had an order error. We asked if we could sub out a side of fries for a side salad. The woman on the phone said it could be done. When the food arrived, we realized we had been charged for and received a full sized house salad. I asked the driver to call the restaurant to clear things up and realized it was likely that the woman misheard us. I spoke on the phone with another man to ask whether we had been charged correctly or if there was a misunderstanding of what we ordered. He said substitutions were not allowed and that the woman taking our order should have told us. He insisted that we give the house salad back to the driver or we'd be charged for it. We didn't mind that there was a mix-up because hey, mix-ups happen. But we felt it was in bad faith to not honor what we were originally told about the substitutions and on top of that make us give the salad back. The entire time the man on the phone was unapologetic and repeatedly said the house salad had to be given back as if we were trying to cheat them out of what they were owed. All in all, it didn't make me feel eager to interact with the staff again even though the food, in my experience, has been pretty delicious.

Yelp
Larry and Joe's is an "Old school" casual Italian place. Pretty good pizza and great chicken parm. The service is friendly too. Their sandwiches are huge and only about $7.50. I wish I lived closer or they opened in NYC!
google avatar

Ann K.

Yelp
Don't like the food here. Pizza has no flavor and is oily and lacks sauce. All the rest of items on the menu just plain slop.
google avatar

Corey S.

Yelp
New to the area and this was one of the first places i stumbled upon. Great prices and service when you want a slice on the go; haven't made it to the rest of the menu yet.
google avatar

Neil S.

Yelp
Very mediocre and average pizza here. You won't get a great quality product, but it'll fill the stomach up. This place caters to the local po-po and high school kids, both who would eat anything.
google avatar

Dante V.

Yelp
Wait 45 minutes for two slices of pizza, it is ridiculous. The girl working the counter is a space cadet and the food production is slower than all heck. Not tasty enough to deal with this long ass wait. Absolutely ridiculous.
google avatar

Giselle R.

Yelp
Old school slice and coke joint. Their pies have been consistently great. Good about on time delivery. Their platters are also great, cause its all about the sauce. Specialty pies generous but well proportioned. Solid.

Yelp
Love this pizza place. Family owned and operated. Great for slices or whole pies. Go to pizza spot!
google avatar

Yelp
I am so grateful that Larry & Joes is walking distance from where I live now. The staff is friendly and pleasant, the food is delicious and priced right. Solid pie. Amazing sandwiches, and quick delivery. If you haven't, give them a try I'm sure you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Ordered 4 pies for my daughters birthday party last Saturday. They were very efficient. The pizza was baked fresh right before pickup and was delicious. Will highly recommend !

Tonia J.

Yelp
While there are better "foody" style pizza spots there is no place in Jersey City that doss the basics of a good slice better than Larry & Joe's on Newark Ave. They are reliable and the service is great. Christina who is the owner is there very single day and she takes so much pride in that establishment and the results speak for itself.
google avatar

DL S.

Yelp
Finally!!! Was craving lasagna but didn't feel like going out. I could never find good lasagna in downtown jersey city. Found Larry & Joe's online and decided to take a chance. THEY DELIVER...inexpensive . Large portions. It was UNBELIEVABLE. Anti pasta salad was enough for 2, maybe 3. And a large menu with so many options. Now that I've found this place I'm def going to have to go back to the gym. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Worst pizza, 0 customer service, no one wears gloves. They cater to the local high school so clearly dont care about quality of anything. I ordered the square and took 2 bites and threw it away.
