The Keith Lee Effect: D.C. Area Restaurants Sell Out After TikTok Critic’s Visits | Eater DC

"I tasted a few flavors at Tyra Banks’s Woodley Park pop-up and my favorite was the candy-bacon scoop — a sweet, savory, salty combo of chocolate-covered caramelized bacon brittle in a rich, smoky maple ice cream — and I couldn’t understand why there wasn’t a line out the door; I left $1,600 to pay for everyone’s ice cream in line and the shop plans to give away 200 free scoops this weekend using my donation." - Emily Venezky

My spouse brought us here. It's house made ice cream after all! ATMOSPHERE: The small shop is situated half below ground, so it isn't wheelchair accessible. A big window lets in lots of light and makes the high top seating area feel airy. MENU: Homemade ice cream in about 34 flavors, bottled beverages, baklava, brownies, merengue. ICE CREAM: White Chocolate Chip Wow, it was super thick and didn't melt quickly at all. I absolutely love solid ice cream. Creaminess was perfect. The chocolate chips were a bit firm to my liking, but very good. Highly recommended. SERVICE: Friendly and professional. OVERALL: Delish ice cream!

Google
Nice basement spot near Dupont Circle for an ice cream. Service was excellent—I only exchanged a few words with the staff member but it was clear they were happy to help and loved their job. While prices are high ($7.78 with tax for a small cone in April 2025) they seem unfortunately on par with other DC ice cream spots.

Google
A cool little ice cream shop that you have to look for or you might pass it. Clean and hip as you enter with several flavors to choose from. Service was friendly and fast. Several options for cones. The ice cream was great. Prices were ok. Very little parking available. Stop by for a scoop and you won't be disappointed.

Google
Cozy little ice cream joint-wide variety of flavors and big scoops! Owner is friendly too. They offer samples, just ask! Be sure to look for the stairs to find the entrance-it's below sidewalk level. Read the story on the newspaper next to the door as well.

Google
Staff were very friendly and helpful. A good selection of classic flavors as well as some interesting ones, I really liked the cardamom almonds even though it was very sweet… the cardamom flavor is very strong which I liked. Want to go back and try more!

Google
Lavender honey ice cream is just okay. Texture is relatively creamy, but the lavender flavor is not the most well defined. It is also a tiny bit artificial tasting. That's not to say that I think it is artificial, but just that the way the flavor profile surfaces tastes that way. Prices are also pretty high.

Google
Immediately got shouted at by a skinny caucasian sassy man with glasses when we entered that the floor was wet and that we can only do take out, no greeting, no warmth, no customer service. We were all younger women and it felt like he was talking down on us like little children. Immediately turned off from the lack of customer service.

Google
Amazing Ice cream!!!!! Had the moose tracks and cookies and cream, the kids got Smurf!!’ Dad got a sundae in a waffle dish!!’ And it’s our first day!!! Girl behind the counter let kids sample and was sweet!!Outside eating area amazing!! First nite in st Pete and think we’re coming back everyday!!

Yelp
Really good homemade ice cream. There is a difference in homemade and you can tell. Larry, ya nailed it. Classic Chocolate- Yes! Muddy Coffee- Yes! Toasted Coconut- Yes! Don't forget tithe waffle cone.

Yelp
Came in late on a Sunday to this cute shop. They had a basic array of flavors. Salted caramel and cardamom were great! Only reason for 3 stars is because I got mixed vibes from the singular employee working. I feel like it's pretty important for an icecream shop employee to have a good attitude and be joyful (since that's the point of icecream?!) So that was a bit of a bummer. Maybe I was misreading their attitude. Probably will still come in here since the icecream was good.

Yelp
Walking back to our hotel after dinner, we spotted Larry's Ice Cream and couldn't resist stopping in. This mom-and-pop ice cream shop is located in a basement, so we walked downstairs to find unique ice cream flavors as well as other dessert options like chocolate chip cookie brownies ("brookies") and baklava. You can get milkshakes and floats, but we are team ice cream all the way. The price for a single scoop is steep at $7, but you can get two scoops for a little over $8 and three for a little over $9. Price wise, your best option is to bring a friend and share or come really hungry for ice cream. We opted for two scoops to try the oatmeal chocolate chip and white chocolate flavors. The flavors blended well together, and I loved the texture and mouthfeel of the oatmeal chocolate chip. The service was great as one gentleman was running the whole shop and had a steady flow of customers.

Yelp
Unique flavors but definitely on the pricier side. A single scoop is already $7.05 (not sure why the 5 cents) so I went ahead and did two scoops since it was only a $1 more and then at least I could try two flavors. I tried the Key West Chocolate Fever and Cinnamon Oatmeal Chocolate Chip, both of which were good thought the cinnamon was definitely the dominant flavor. It wasn't busy when I came in - just me and 2 other women ordering - but the staff behind the counter was very pushy. I had barely walked in the door before I was asked if I knew what I wanted yet. The other two women asked to try a flavor and were told 1 sample per customer only, which fine. But in the maybe 5 mins we were all standing there looking at the flavors (and again, they've got some unique ones so it's worth taking a minute to look at them all), they must've asked us 6 times if we were ready. No one else came in during that time but I felt very rushed which didn't make for a great experience.

Yelp
Dinner was too spicy, I needed some ice cream! Larry to the rescue. Very interesting flavors, traditional and contemporary. I went with cherry vanilla in a waffle cone. Creamy and delicious. Everything i want from the occasional cone. And the server was more than kind.

PC N.

Yelp
I give it 10 stars if I could! This is a biweekly treat for me. Such unique and wonderful flavors. Not your ordinary ice cream and I'm so glad! I eat the Key West Chocolate on a regular basis...chocolate with orange essence...to die for. Treat yourself!!

Yelp
We were driving home through dc and really wanted cookies and this came up on the way. Realized it was in Reagan building food court but hubby dropped me off while he drove around the block a few times. Got three cookies and they were all surprisingly delicious: double chocolate chip, m&ms and chocolate chip pecan. Also got a caramel macchiato which was decent. Barely any wait but it was a little trek to get to the food court. Good option to get out of the heat if nearby.
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly staff and prices are reasonable. They carry a good mix of "old school" flavors and fun stuff. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Yonnie C.

Yelp
Came by here one night in April 2025 during our visit to DC to get some strawberry ice cream for the kids. Pretty tasty, seating inside for the cold weather. Walking distance from our hotel.
google avatar

Anna N.

Yelp
I appreciate that this ice cream spot is open late so that there's time to stop by after dinner! I love that all of the flavors are handmade and not just bought in bulk frozen somewhere else. They have seating in the corner and pretty lights and decor! The lady behind the counter was very nice and let me try three samples. She threw in a small sample of lavender on top because she said a lot of people pair that with matcha. I would just take off a star because of the price as my cone was almost $11... besides that this is a great place to try in the area!

Don L.

Yelp
The best ice cream and awesome customer service. We have enjoyed our evening dessert here during our DC stay, highly recommend!!!!
google avatar

Tara B.

Yelp
Cute family spot, homemade ice cream, lots of unique flavors. A bit pricey but you can tell it's made with love. You wont find many "regular" flavors here because she makes them homemade!
google avatar

Natalie V.

Yelp
Best ice cream ever. This place is owned by and older couple and it definitely gives you that home like vibe. The service is quick, but I loved it. It felt like you were at your grandparents house getting a sweet treat. I dream about this ice cream and I cannot wait to return to DC just for this ice cream.
google avatar

Sydney F.

Yelp
Good ice cream, places get extra points when they have peppermint on the menu. It was soft because I dont think the owner was expecting anyone to order that day, so he offered me a cup. Still yummy!
google avatar

Chelsea A.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place because I love homemade ice cream and the fact that they are free of preservatives and emulsifiers. However I don't think I'll be back. It was super crowded, yet you just couldn't tell how the line was moving toward the register. There also wasn't too many places to sit (if any? couldn't tell) and the art work on the wall was super creepy. I would've taken a photo of it but I didn't want it sitting on my camera roll. Ice cream itself was spectacular, you can tell it was homemade as it melted pretty fast. Highly recommend the matcha, lavender, and the peanut butter if those are up to your taste buds. However be WARY of the price. ONE KIDDIE SCOOP at $6.50 is honestly the most expensive scoop of ice cream in all of DC. I would've been okay with $5.00 tops but $6.50 is already a high end pint of ice cream at the local grocery store.... I got two kiddie scoops which totaled to be $13.00. That's pretty wild if you ask me. If I were a mom, I'd be using that money to buy ice cream from the grocery store. The ice cream tasted great, but there are definitely other ice cream places that are equally as good that are less expensive.

Mckenna S.

Yelp
This is my new favorite ice cream place! I love matcha lattes and the matcha ice cream was spot on. The owners were so kind to us and welcoming!
google avatar

Patricia Q.

Yelp
The ice cream was good. The service was excellent. Looking forward to visiting again.

Yelp
Mom and Pop ice cream shop that seems to have been around for a while. Once you walk in, you are hit with the smell of fresh ice cream and fresh baked goods. They also have gelato. I opted for the cookies and cream and the caramel swirl ice cream and it came to about eight dollars for two scoops. Very reasonable, very delicious, go get some ice cream it support a small business.
google avatar

Yelp
TLDY: The staff was very rude. Customer service does not exist in this store. We requested to taste a few flavors and were told each person can only have one taste sample. We asked what if we wanted a cup of three scoops (which we sincerely did!), he grabbed the ingredient and showed it to us...I guess he could taste by looking at something but as an ordinary person, I can't. Then when we ordered, we clearly told him we'd like "scoop adult" with three scoops. He finished two scoops and we were like where the last one was. The staff got impatient, showed us the difference sizes of cup again, which we clearly knew, and shook his head. Oh well, we decided to left because we didn't want to give money to a business lack of respect and covered its own mistake by blaming things on its customers.

Chenyin H.

Yelp
My family and I stopped at this little ice cream shop around the corner from our hotel. We got our usuals, chocolate and mint chip ice cream, one of the staff told us that the mint chip had liquor in them and said they recommended them for kids. Surprisingly, my kids loved the liquor in the ice cream saying that it was super flavorful which I totally agree. The shop inside was very cute and quiet, not a lot of people than I expected. I definitely will stop by and get ice cream here again!
google avatar

Una D.

Yelp
I had the chocolate. It was ok. I also sampled the ginger which was really bad. The place is really small and service rather surly. Parking is on it street. This is a one and done for me
google avatar

Dena L.

Yelp
Don't walk by this below street level gem. The ice cream is delicious with some unusual flavors like halva and lavender.
google avatar

Bill E.

Yelp
Overpriced. Staff was indifferent. Ice cream was average at best. Waffle cones were definitely below average.
google avatar

Justin N.

Yelp
Came here with friends to grab some ice cream after dinner. I love trying region and store specific flavors when I go to ice cream shops, so I was excited to try the Halva, Ecstasy, and Decadence. The Halva was amazing. It's a simple and unique flavor that tasted awesome. It was super thick, creamy, and delicious. The Decadence and Ecstasy were good but not the best ice cream I've ever had. The Decadence was a rich chocolate ice cream with truffle inside. The Ecstasy was a standard vanilla ice cream with chocolate swirled in. There was no freezer burn in the ice cream I tried which was nice. I also really like that the ice cream is fresh and homemade. Overall, Larry's is a solid ice cream shop in Dupont and I'd recommend trying the Halva.
google avatar

Priya D.

Yelp
Best ice cream in DC! Highly recommend! Treats you like family when you walk in. My fav flavor is Oreo! Must try!
google avatar

Denise C.

Yelp
Craving something sweet while in the area, we found Larry's Homemade Ice Cream and had to try it. We had 2 scoops of their ecstasy flavor, and it was delicious. The ice cream is very creamy and flavorful. We sat down in the seats near the window to enjoy our treat while looking outside. It was such a cute spot with tons of ice cream flavors! I also really liked that everything is made in-house.

Rebecca F.

Yelp
Best ice cream in DC! I love this place i go all the time the owners are amazing and they have so many delicious and interesting flavors. Larry's never disappoints
google avatar

Ailun H.

Yelp
A bit expensive, but my friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our ice creams and Larry's commentary/jokes/conversation with us. I got the Kid sized scoop (yes, there's "Teenager" and "Adult" sizes) of "Toasted Coconut" which was super delicious. There were lots of toasted coconut flakes and the ice cream was creamy and smooth. Overall, it wasn't too sweet. I'd come back here for ice cream! It was about $6.50 for my scoop of ice cream, so definitely treat yourself from time to time!

Mary B.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream and baklava! They were very friendly and the shop is cute and easily accessible. But seriously, the ice cream is perfect. Not too sweet and so creamy. We got 3 different kinds and no complaints! And the pistachio baklava was to die for.
google avatar

Joshua K.

Yelp
Extremely disappointing ice cream and place. This place is below street level with poor signage. When I placed my order, I had to repeat my order several times after having made myself clear. I ordered one scoop of ice cream in a waffle cone which was extremely expensive ($7.5 with tax), even for DC. I ordered the chocolate ganache ice cream, which was not good. I could barely taste the chocolate, the ice cream tasted like a cheap grocery store brand, and left me unhappy with the whole experience.
google avatar

Karyl H.

Yelp
Awesome spot in Dupont Circle. I loved the Cinnamon Oatmeal with chocolate chips ice cream. Decently priced & the owner was very friendly & fast. He was the only one working. I give props to him for clearing up his line of customers quick. I will definitely be back!

Joshua L.

Yelp
Ice cream is fine. It's ice cream. Hard to mess that up. The service is awful. Just an unpleasant disposition from the people working the counter. For just no reason...
google avatar

McKenzie M.

Yelp
I got the Oreo and chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream from Jerry's homemade ice cream. The ice cream was really creamy. It was good but nothing there really stood out. It was sort of under ground but it was cute. If you are in Washington DC I would go there. I do wish the had black raspberry ice cream that is my one of my favorite flavors. The ice cream was very expensive. $17 for 2 2 scoops and of ice cream.
google avatar

Cassi B.

Yelp
I do not recommend this place at all... as my cousins and I walked down the stairs to the entrance it wasn't very clean outside and we saw fly and bugs... when we walked inside we were immediately greeted with "hey sexy" "hey beautiful" just really weird. We looked around at the different flavors and the guy proceeds to comment on my tattoos.. that was fine until when I asked him if they offered military discount and he then told me I was too YOUNG to be in the military (after calling me sexy) and goes maybe your dad or your brother.. I was just very insulted and overall did not have a good experience IN the ice cream store. The ice cream itself was sub par which is why I gave it 2 stars. Don't go here.

Brendon C.

Yelp
Ice cream was delicious lady at the register was super nice building with an awesome painting. 100% recommend if you're in the area!!!
google avatar

Rick A.

Yelp
The toasted coconut ice cream was out of this world. Glad I don't live close - that would be bad. But cannot wait for next time.
google avatar

Erica H.

Yelp
FANTASTIC. Delicious unique ice cream that felt distinctly like a hole-in-the-wall, local hidden gem. I got the cinnamon oatmeal cookie dough with chocolate chunks, and I'm telling you, that flavor combination is GENIUS. So happy we stumbled across this place.
google avatar

Beth K.

Yelp
The ice cream was very good! The shop is located in a basement so it's kind of hard to spot. There were a lot of flavors. The soft serve machine was down - which was disappointing.
google avatar

Ojus P.

Yelp
Came at 10pm on a Friday night. Got a couple different options. Both were solid but not spectacular, which feels on the high side for around $13 for 2 kiddie cups.
google avatar

Ana C.

Yelp
Travelled from Columbia MD to try it. We weren't impressed with the ice cream. We got a ONE-scoop brownie sundae with usual toppings. One scoop of ice cream in a cup, and one scoop in a cone. Total: $34.+. Apparently the actual brownie ($6.99) was a separate price from the sundae which in itself was $11.50). So the brownie sundae alone was $19.+ With so many other excellent ice cream shops throughout the DMV, we will not return to Larry's.
google avatar

Greg S.

Yelp
Very good ice cream if not the best in DC. They have great flavor options and supposedly it is homemade. It is firm ice cream and it tastes like quality ingredients are used. Minus one star for customer service, the cost, and sometimes they only accept cash. If you are in DC and want good ice cream, check out Larry's!

Chance T.

Yelp
I am the type of person to eat ice cream every day... I stumbled into Larry's and tried the cinnamon oatmeal cookie dough and it surpassed my expectations! I am definitely coming back next time I'm in town!

Anna K.

Yelp
Amazing ice cream flavors and a cute location! The service was also great. Overall I'll definitely be back. I got the cinnamon cookie dough and my partner got the cotton candy. Both were great!
google avatar

Kathryn L.

Yelp
The Father & Son Duo welcomes customers, takes their orders & rings us up all at the sugary same time. The Son is the human assembly line saying "next order please", "cone or cup please" while making the order, telling his Father of the same-with the price as his Father works the cash register. & while you pay yet before you taste, he bids you a bland "thank you & do come back". In this down the stairs, lower level back drop of an old fashion Corner Soda Fountain Store/Ice Cream Parlor, you will find homemade Cupcakes, Baklava, Coffee/Teas, Bottled Drinks in addition to their 30+ selections of Ice Cream, Gelato & Sorbet - 2 Vegan selections. The seating area is small yet the black & white checkered wall gives off a nostalgic nod. For a less than $5, you can get two scoops of whatever in a cup, while receiving not a cold shoulder, yet a tasty treat & friendly service. Conveniently located a block from the DuPont Metro Station-Red Line, exiting Q Street.
google avatar

Jose M.

Yelp
Maybe not the Best Ice Cream Ever but solid ice cream, comparable to Baskin Robbins, in a good location. I tried the cardamon ice cream and really enjoyed it. The prices are reasonable for the real estate in Dupont. Portions were good and the ice cream tasted well-kept (and not with little frozen bits as sometimes happens when temperature is not kept steady). Eating area was clean. I would go back.
google avatar

Indigo S.

Yelp
The gentleman who I assume to be Larry is absolutely hilarious, automatic 5 stars for him. Immaculate vibes and ice cream is stellar too. Def will be back!
google avatar

Yelp
My spouse brought us here. It's house made ice cream after all! ATMOSPHERE: The small shop is situated half below ground, so it isn't wheelchair accessible. A big window lets in lots of light and makes the high top seating area feel airy. MENU: Homemade ice cream in about 34 flavors, bottled beverages, baklava, brownies, merengue. ICE CREAM: White Chocolate Chip - That's what the sign states but it's really regular chocolate chip with white vanilla ice cream. Wow, it was super thick and didn't melt quickly at all. I absolutely love solid ice cream. Creaminess was perfect. The chocolate chips were a bit hard to my liking, but good. 2 scoops in a cup ran about $7. Highly recommended. SERVICE: The lone male worker, possibly the owner, was friendly and professional. TIP: No soft serve. OVERALL: Delish ice cream!
google avatar

W C.

Yelp
The ice cream is fine, but this place is not big on the whole experience of enjoying ice cream. It's take-out only, and of course there is no bench or chairs or anything outside on which to sit and eat your sweet treat. Also, the guy working was Miserable. Our daughter got Oreo and strawberry, both good. One of us got the decadence chocolate and the other chocolate that had orange in it (the former flavor was better). The other one got the halva (pretty bad; do not recommend) and the cinnamon cookie, which was the best one. So, overall, you won't be unhappy with the product, but if you're looking for a location for ice cream consumption enjoyment, look elsewhere.
google avatar

Yelp
Great homemade ice cream good selection of flavors! Small soda shop atmosphere with great service.
