Yelp
Larson Family Winery is probably the spot I felt most comfortable at being a gal from a city in New England that boasts of it's ridiculous number of award winning craft breweries. Because it felt just like them: a place that cool locals go to hang out with friends and family. There's no pretentiousness, there's no expectations. It really is a fun-loving winery (I mean, c'mon, their motto is "we drink what we can, and sell the rest!") where you can just relax at (y'know the kind of place that you immediately feel like you're welcome and can just be yourself at? that's here).. Play some bocce, bring the kids and a picnic, enjoy their beautiful property on your own terms, and snag some snuggles from their "ambassadors" (read: dogs) all while enjoying really quality wines.
We tried:
2015 Larson Family Pinot Grigio
2014 Millerick Road Chardonnay
2015 Millerick Road Pinot Noir
Sonoma Red Jug Blend
2013 Three Lab Cab
2013 Larson Family Malbec
2012 Larson Family Winery Sparkling Rose
Overall, they were really good. I appreciated the staff's encouragement to try any and everything we wanted. The standouts for me were the Sonoma Red Jug Blend (um, it comes in an old timey moonshine jug straight out of a Western film!), the Three Cab Lab (they served it with a spoonful of their chocolate sauce), and the sparkling rosé.
But, in the end, I purchased a bottle of the 2012 Larson Family Winery Sparkling Brut to drink with lunch (sandwiches, potato salad, and chocolate chip cookies), outside overlooking the vineyard. It was the perfect hot weather drink: crisp, bright, balanced, effervescent. It went perfectly with the basic picnic foods we had, but I could also imagine it going really well with a charcuterie plate, some herb-focused pasta dish, a chocolate truffle dessert, or just with a straw right out of the bottle (which I bet you could do here without repercussion).
Anyway, THIS is the number one place that I'll be recommending to my craft beer loving friends traveling to wine country. Because this - approachable and delicious - is how a wine experience should be.
