An Eater Editor’s Favorite Pupusas Around D.C. | Eater DC

"One of the most consistent Falls Church options, producing pupusas with a robust amount of filling and a pleasing char on the exterior; they tend to benefit from a touch more salt, and the curtido and salsa are prepared together for a cohesive flavor." - Missy Frederick

The carne asada was cooked perfectly, the refried beans were savory and the coffee light roast, not the bitter French type too many restaurants serve. The service was quick and the place friendly.

I got tacos, chicken, and beef, and I really enjoyed it! Very flavorful! Decent amount and price! Savory , authentic. Can't explain the flavors. Atmosphere inside has lively Hispanic music playing. A little run down. But food hit the spot!

Google
We enjoyed this place quite a bit. From the outside it doesn't look too promising or much, but do not judge a book by its cover. They had different options on the menu that represents different parts of the America's. My wife and MIL ordered a seafood plate, which was filled with plenty of different kinds of seafood. scallops, mussels, oysters, fish, and rice & beans. I got cow tounge, it was very good. Highly recommended this place.

I always have a nice time with family and friends when we want to eat yummy food and enjoy karaoke at the same time! The food is exquisite and the environment is fun for karaoke they take the time to play the song you want to sing.

Google
I did visit this restaurant during early evening some time ago . They had karaoke the music way too loud a lot of people having great time they was not talking they was screaming . I don’t think so this place is recommended as family restaurant special if you come with your children at night time .

Kelly Massona

Google
They have really great tacos, but their service is not that good. They need to improve their customer service quality.

Google

We only do take out from here m. The food is so good and reasonably priced.

Yelp
Steak grilled but not overcooked , rice cooked perfectly, refried beans were delicious. The coffee was not the over burnt French roast that you get at most places. The server poured the first cup at the table and the service was excellent.

Yelp
We got takeout from here despite all the bad reviews - we were pleasantly surprised! Ordered the plato tipico and it came with beef, chicken, a salad (chismol), refried beans, rice and tortillas. The meats were well seasoned and fairly juicy, the chimol and beans were great sides as well. We'd probably be open to trying more items from here! This is next to pho 75 so plenty of parking and a great plaza for food.

Yelp
Poor customer service. After ordering my food, food came out ALL wrong and instead of fixing our food. A server (Marcela, Marisela) came around and started arguing about how the kitchen was closed and she refused to get the manager to come to our table. Asked for a manager 3 times. At this point I just asked her to take my plate back & magically even after the kitchen being closed they still made some quesadillas.... which I thought was very unprofessional & unpleasant. Had to look for the manager myself and let him know of the situation. Not only that but when check came around they had automatically added gratuity to our check...

Yelp
Had just the pupusas on my first visit. But the beef, bean, and cheese versions were all excellent! And the chips and salsa were yummy. Ambience: There's cheerful music playing and soccer on the TV. Loud but not deafening. The atmosphere is family friendly. If you don't speak Spanish, just point at the English menu to communicate what you want. My Spanish is rusty, and the server's English was not fluent. But it all worked out fine.

Yelp
I love the food!!! I love the service !!! Great musicaaa! I love playing pool here ! Plus the drinks are in point!!!

Bruh B.

Yelp
Don't get food from here! Go across the street and buy from the other pupuseria! 10x betters over there. The service here was lack luster. They overcharged me did not want to do the right thing and refund me.

Yelp
Thức ăn được bán ở đây rất ngon. Họ có những món ăn rất ngon của người Salvador để bán. Người dân ở đây cũng tốt và tốt bụng.

Yelp
Got pupusas. They were pretty good but the cabbage and red sauce hit the spot. Really good cabbage. I cant comment on the rest

Yelp
I only went to this restaurant because I had a Restaurant.com coupon. First of all, it's a hole-in-the-wall kind of place, tucked away with barely anyone inside. The staff do not speak much English, so it was very hard to even order a drink. They didn't even understand "guacamole," which is a Spanish word! The staff is friendly and they tried, but it was a bit of a frustrating experience. The food is good, but you can get good food in a lot of places. When we got the bill, I was astounded that such a casual place charges $15 for a margarita; I can get drinks in D.C. cheaper than that! AND I had specifically said I did NOT want Patron in my drink, but I think they did it anyway and charged us more for it. It really is overpriced for such a random place with zero atmosphere.

Yelp
I ordered then realized their ratings were low. Tempted to cancel but decided I'd try it for myself. So glad I did. Their Pupusas are bomb and don't get me started on the carne a shrimp!!! So much flavor and great texture!! I've always had to go to DC but now I have a new local spot!! You all are wack who rated 1-2 stars loll that's petty, their food is tasty and authentic.

Yelp
I order the sopa de res and one other item using uber eats. This people decided to accept my order and decided it would be ok to just send Half of my order and not the soup which is exactly why I order from them.... what the hell! Why would I want half of my order and why would you let me order the soup if the are not serving it and why would you not call me to tell me you don't have the item I'm ordering NEVER AGAIN!

Yelp
The exterior and interior appearance can be quite deceiving. The food is delicious here and the prices are quite reasonable. One of the biggest things that bothered us was the lack of air conditioning and the blasting music. It seemed to get louder as our meal progressed. We got the papusas, beef fajitas, and carne aside. Everything was flavorful and very good overall. One can of soda was 3.95 so that was a ripoff. Just stick to water and grab some food to go.

Yelp
Horrible experience! I ordered a carne Asada and had it delivered. To my surprise when my food arrived there was a big blue spot on my steak. I called and spoke to a manager who first tried to blame the delivery driver, and then with an attitude said thanks for calling. No attempt to fix the problem no sympathy, or an offer of apology. Horrible experience do not eat here

Yelp
This restaurant has been here forever lol. I'm grown up now and dang it's still here. Anyway I called at 6:38PM on a Sunday. Ordered a chicken Philadelphia sandwich and carne asada plate to go. Lady on the phone was super nice and told me my order would be ready in about 20-25 minutes. Ok I arrived at 7:00pm. The restaurant was not busy. They had karaoke and a few men drinking. The ladies told me myy order was almost ready in atLeast 10 minutes. Ok. I literallyy got my order at 7:48pm. So does that mean I have to order an hour before? LOL. Too bad I had paid and my boyfriend said not to make a big deal about it. Well I've worked in reStaurants for yEars and ??? I completely understand if it's busy but it clearly wasn't. I think they forgot about my order until I got there.

Mike M.

Yelp
Ordered for the first time last night and had write a review for the first time as well. I got the Americas bundle and pupusas salvedorenas. Exactly what I was hoping for, seasoned correctly, great price. The only reasons I didn't give it 5 stars: 1) it's my first order, 2) I've never been there. Been cooking and butchering professionally for almost 2 decades.

Yelp
Las Americas, a nice little Salvadorian restaurant in Arlington. Among the few things that needs to be noted about this place is a few of the waitresses do not speak English aside The service is always great, depending upon the waitress. In terms of food, my girlfriend and I have come here for pupupsas mainly. Overall, we've had pretty good experiences here.

Yelp
I have come to this restaurant in at least three occasions. I have tried the pupusas, guacamole, breakfast, and soups. They are over priced and the food is absolutely not that great. The environment is deceiving, always loud, and multiple men drinking and flirting with waitresses. To me, doesn't look or feel like a family restaurant. Customer service is below average.
google avatar

Juan R.

Yelp
Pupusas were good but the plate that i order had the rice that was reheated, it was hard to bite. I told the waitress and she was like mmm really. But didn't offer to make a fresh one. So, I'm sorry, disappointed on my visit. And i love my rice.

Yelp
I just ate here with my husband, and it was an interesting experience, but they don't deserve the crappy reviews they have. Here's the thing - it's a hole-in-the-wall Salvadorian place - and nobody speaks english. The music is campy karaoke-style latin music, and the ESPN desportes is on the tv's (predictably soccer when we were there). It isn't fancy - but the servers are very friendly and attentive, and the food was GOOD. The salsa with the chips was unique and tasty, and the carne asada was delicious - I scarfed it down. The wine - not so great, but for $5 I didn't care. They DID accept my restaurant.com certificate - I showed it on my phone (in the app), they took my phone back to the register and figured it out. A few things helped: first, my husband is South American, so he could translate a bit. Second, I am used to pointing and gesturing when I'm around people that only speak Spanish, because I don't speak any, and several of my husband's relatives don't know English. Bottom line: it worked, we enjoyed our food, and I hope the place gets some business and can make some upgrades to the ambiance.

Yelp
Caution - They do not honor RESTAURANT.com coupons. Decor is old and run down. Food is just Meh. Would have been better off going to Fast Food. Would not recommend

Yelp
The pupusas are not that great and almost $3 each they weren't big or small But i just didn't feel they were worth that.. Not to mention this is supposed to be a "Spanish" restaurant and when I ordered the sopa de pollo (chicken soup) it looked just like the hot ckn soups from Giant or some place rather, it even came with the small frozen veggies smh not happy .. I gave this place a try Bc it was Conveniently close to my house But the inside of the restaurant was just as unpleasant as the outside was!!! it's pretty safe to say I'd rather drive a few miles away then go to this place again

Yelp
Don't know why this place only has 2.5 stars... ever since the bf and I found this place a few months ago, we've been ordering takeout from them all the time. We love their pupusas, nachos, and beef tacos. Sometimes when there's a long wait we like to go into Banh Mi DC next door and get snacks. Neither of us speak Spanish very well, but the staff are really lovely and always friendly.

Yelp
Food was ok, nothing special. Ambiance was pretty bad. Way too loud and way too many TVs

Kathy R.

Yelp
Yesterday was probably the last time I'll be ordering from this place. I went in to pick up my order & no one from the staff was wearing a mask. There's no distance between tables either. They're not doing anything to keep people safe or to help avoid the spread of the virus. I heard they were open for dining in when all restaurants were supposed to be only doing carry out or delivery. If they don't care about anyone's health what makes you think they handle food properly? They probably don't even wash their hands. The owner only cares about making money.

Yelp
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^doesn't know what he talking about...... Great service, Great food, Great karaoke music at night and mix drinks are great. Only thing some serving staff understand a little English, but the menu is in English detail.

William L.

Yelp
We had a Groupon which is how we found this place. We were excited to go here and was hoping it would be a new favorite spot. Our initial waitress had to had us off to someone else because only one waitress spoke English apparently, which is not a big deal, but communication was difficult all evening. The chips were stale The printed cost for a drink is $2.50 The drinks are 12 oz cans No refills Music was LOUD They started some sort of karaoke The karaoke was ULTRA LOUD They ended up charging us almost $4.00 for our drink The up-charge was due to "drinks and a show" (The karaoke was the "show") On the back of the menu in the bottom right shows the drinks and a show charge, which is not even near where the drink cost is located (back of the menu near the top on the left). The quesadilla appetizer was amazing, but my meal seemed bland. But no matter how good the food was, it would not have changed my view due to the atmosphere, the lack of attention to us as customers, and the additional charge for the show (which I did not want to see and actually made me want to leave faster).

Yelp
Burrito cane with grilled chicken as I like but the side if Brava and salad were not special small side with little to look at. No sour cream or gauc on the side our salsa. Also the salad was wet half salsa half lettuce should have been separate. The only reason I have it a chance is because it wad next to where I was at pho 75 and I got my hours up on a home in the wall place that I wad going would have some really good authentic good.

Yelp
Chips were stale. Waitresses were too busy smacking each other's but to get more attention from the drunk man. Not to mention one drunk individual was fallen on my son. Overall worst experience. Waitresses decided to tip herself. Adding 15% and then asking me to sign. So pathetic, I ended up feeling bad for her and giving her the money.

Boris A.

Yelp
Don't let the aesthetics fool you, this place has some great authentic food! Very tasty and great service, the only reason it didn't get 5 stars is because they overcooked my steak just a tad and was a heavy handed on the cheese on my steak and cheese. I would definitely come back!

Paola B.

Yelp
Honestly do not eat here. The food is nasty, no flavor, and who serves fried yuca with ranch. Honestly save your money go somewhere else. It's not REAL Mexican food or REAL Salvadoran food.

Lady M.

Yelp
Fun atmosphere with below average food & above average prices. We went on Sat night around 6pm & they had good Latin music playing, several servers working & about 6 tables of customers most of which were drinking & only 1 other table was consuming food. That should've been a hint, but we didn't get it. I ordered a disappointing seafood soup priced at $16. The soup arrived & it looked NOTHING like the pic on their menu or other seafood soups I have had at other restaurants. It had 1 small shrimp, 1 clam, 3 muscles & a whole lot of pieces of tilapia & a bit of some frozen bagged seafood mix. I could've had a way better dish at Coastsl Flats for that price. My partner had Mondongo soup priced at $15 & he was so disappointed that he didn't even finish it. It was a lot broth with very little veggies & even less meat. The food is not worth the price. It may be a cool spot to drink & chill/dance & maybe eat nachos if they're my overpriced.

Yelp
*****LONG review on our experience there today***** Horrible service, never again coming to this restaurant. I remember going to Las America's as a teen and loving their nachos and pupusas so I decided to eat there with my husband and 3 kids. Mind you it was 6:30. We get there and they had super loud music. I thought ok cool it isn't unbearable so we stayed. We ordered nachos to start and carne asada and fajita mixto. As we're waiting for our appetizer we see two waitresses chatting with the table next to us and they were taking shots with the customers (who clearly were all intoxicated) When the nachos came out the chips were so stale we couldn't eat it. We called over one of the waitress (one that we seen taking shots with the table over) and I tell her the nachos are very stale and we cannot eat it. She just looked at me annoyed and said it can't be possible because they made them in the morning and if I wanted to complain then I got to tell her manger myself and walks away.... she had a nasty attitude. Her manager came and I explained to him that the nacho chips were too stale and hard to chew. He just looked at me and said "ok I'll take them" and took nachos and walked away. We were absolutely dumbfounded. No apologies or offered something else on the menu. While later another waitress comes out with rest of our order. The carne asada was super salty *sigh* and fajita was really oily and the "jumbo shrimp" were actually small. We decided not to say anything and just asked for the check. While waiting, a super drunk man sitting at the table next to us stands up and falls over onto our table almost hitting our son. My husband had to stand up and tell him to get off and be careful. His friends grabbed him and tried to control him and the man was stumbling and mumbling. They sit him down and gave him another beer. We get our check and it was almost $70 for two meals and 4 non alcoholic drinks. They had added an extra $10, we asked why and waitress said it was the gratuity for their service....... I asked her what service ??????? For the stale nachos and a drunk man falling over our table??????? We just wanted out of there as soon as possible. It was such a horrible experience. UNREAL. The waitress there were extremely rude and unprofessional drinking, dancing and drinking. The manager was just standing around pretending not to notice the chaos around him. I'm not sure what happened to this place.

Chucho E.

Yelp
ok service. I would recommend trying their pupusas as they looked better than my chicken philly (which was the weirdest looking cut chicken). However, the place looks run down; kareoke in the middle of the day while having a family dinner for mother's day was just UGH. The soup was not good. The drinks were expensive.
