LA’s Mexican Museum, La Plaza Cocina, Worries Owners of Olvera Street Businesses | Eater LA

"A sit-down Mexican restaurant associated with the long-standing taquito stand’s ownership, its proprietor expresses ambivalence about gentrification: recognizing benefits such as jobs and neighborhood improvement while stressing the need for socially just development that balances new investment with protection of existing community and cultural life." - Karla Vasquez

Google
I was excited to try this place as I had heard great reviews. It wasn’t terrible but not for me. My husband likes it. The food was very mid. The service was good and the atmosphere is very nice. Nice little outdoor patio with covered seating.

Tommy K.

Google
Amazing service everyone was super attentive to us. I am allergic to food coloring and they made sure to check their ingredients for me and even made me a special drink without food coloring so I wouldn't get sick. Really really good food too, the street tacos combo was affordable and delicious. Not many places also do Chile Toreados and theirs was super good and spicy! Salsa was on point and they kept bringing us chips! 10/10 and would definitely come back for more!

Google
This place is seriously underrated. They have the best margarita in Seabrook. And the staff, they’re amazing. They know who you are when you come in. I love it here. I prefer this Mexican restaurant over any other place in Seabrook.

Google
We’ve lived in Nassau Bay nearly 20 years. Not sure why we had never eaten here before tonight. This is a legit Mexican restaurant. It’s not a chain or a Tex Mex restaurant with menus of food that Mexican people don’t eat. This is authentic Mexican and very delicious. I had the beef fajitas. I was very surprised at the price. Beef is very expensive right now, but they still charge at what seems like the old beef prices. Fajitas were delicious. I saw menudo, caldo, birria, tortilla soup, and many other legit Mexican food dishes on the menu. Highly recommend. We will be back for sure!

Lisa C.

Google
Great local Mexican! We'll priced and delicious Supreme nachos and menudo!

Courtney S.

Google
Las Anita’s is a little bit hidden but the owner and staff are so sweet, food is super fast & tasty!

Cody B.

Google
This place is great. More authentic than Tex-Mex. The red sauce is fantastic, margaritas are $4 during happy hour and really good. All around everything was great.

Ellebanna S.

Google
The food was just perfect. Flavorful and tasty! Plus perfect portion sized. I also appreciate that there are free ice creams, just the cherry on top of an already great restaurant. The staff was very kind and friendly, and the atmosphere was calm and relaxing for a meal. Dim lights, not very loud music, and a beautifully designed setting. Just visiting, but I would absolutely eat here again next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
Visiting from out of state and we wanted Mexican food. Was told the owner is from GTO Mexico's which my family is too, and not to toot our own horn but I was like sweet we know it's gonna be good... Well..... the food was okay.. we had a large party of 10, so many different dishes were ordered and sampled.. the food overall is okay, but nothing wow about it.. rice was mid.. it just didn't hit.. if they said it was day old rice I'd believe it.. the beans tasted like they were from a bag or something.. again. They were okay not bad but not amazing, but neither rice or beans tasted homemade or freshly made, I'm Mexican and eat them daily. I feel like I know the difference but taste is completely subjective. Service was friendly our waiter was patient and took the time to answer our questions and concerns. They gave us chips and salsa, I'm visiting Texas and so far every place gives me warm salsa, maybe it's a Texas thing but it's just not something I'm used to but it tasted good just weird it's warm.. We had an issue with the horchata, not tasting at all like horchata, we asked the server what was in it and he was completely clueless and said I don't know, and on his phone while we asked this and just seemed not happy to be there, but they swapped it no problem.. thanks again, we got the lemonade and it was delicious. I ordered the carnitas and they were amazing.. I would recommend you get them yourself I've had lots throughout my life and they're definitely top 3. My mom ordered the shrimp cocktail, it didn't hit.. we ended up sharing my carnitas plate. I don't recommend the shrimp cocktail, the shrimps were tiny, precooked and I could tell they came frozen.. I love ketchup, but this was an excess. Idk something just wasn't right.. my mom ate maybe 1/4 of it and was done.. cousins got burgers and fries they were basic but hit the spot, someone else got fajitas and they hit.. enchiladas were yummy, someone got a tamale I didn't try it but they ate it all.. same with the crunchy tacos and tostadas.. overall the place was okay. Ambiance was great, it's nicely decorated and very cheerful., services was friendly and we finished it off with complimentary self serve ice cream..

Yelp
Love this place it has a great vibe nice owner and Waiters food was great love the experience and the fajitas were delicious the kids loved and they ate all their food and desserts were delicious.food great and lovely space

Marina F.

Yelp
I really enjoy this place. They always have excellent service. I love the horchata. The food is always good. I always feel welcomed, would definitely recommend coming.

Larissa B.

Yelp
They treat you like family! Love coming here. I order food to go a lot. They support the community and have kids in schools here. Support local business!

Yelp
Meh. I'm not sure if this joint is affiliated with Casa Anita's (La Porte), but the food here is equally marginal. First, the salsa is served warm, and that's sacrilege to me. I asked for a cold version and the server pointed to the bland green sauce and said "That's cold." I responded, "Yes, and I want cold red sauce." Only after another server came around and said "Salsa fria! Fria!" did he bring me a cold bowl of the stuff. It was fairly bland and not worth the trouble. The tostada here is good ... warm beans and cold lettuce. Too bad the salsa added very little flavor. Rice and beans here are par for the course. The tamale was better than what many places offer -- al dente masa and decent flavor. The cheese enchilada, albeit fresh, was akin to what I would find in the frozen food section of the grocery store. There are some beers here served on draft ... extremely cold. And the service is mostly exceptional. I wish I could say the same about the food.

Yelp
We had to give this a try, since it is pretty much the closest mexican restaurant that seemed more Mexican side than the usual tex-mex spot. The dining room was at 50% capacity when we got there, they had sanitizing stations up at front, and you were seated when arriving. We were brought the usual chips and salsa, but the salsa was not the best, not spicy with not much flavor in my honest opinion. When looking at the menu, I realized with was more if a tex mex with some of the hole in the wall menu options, but not many. They didn't have barbacoa, no gorditas, no tortas, not the true Mexican Taqueria menu. We ordered the chorizo con huevo and the chicken enchiladas. The chorizo said it came with rice and beans, but I subbed the rice for potatoes, which were cubed and fried and came with 3 flour tortillas. The plate was pretty big and very good! The enchiladas had a sort of cheese sauce in top and he really much enjoyed them too! The food was good and the price was even better! Also, they did have a soft serve ice cream machine which was a nice way to end good meal!

Yelp
New place that I tried tonight. Co-worker recommend it. Service was good. Family owned, always a plus! I ordered the shrimp something ( yes, I forgot what it a was) also ordered the chicken taco plate. The house margaritas were good! I would come back. National Taco Day! #tacotuesday

Matthew P.

Yelp
I can honestly say we've never had a bad meal there. The take-out isn't bad either. The staff is pretty helpful and courteous. They offer a Military discount and they're on BAHFL.
google avatar

Martina-Realtor H.

Yelp
Awful service and food. Staff wasn't friendly and food Is flavorless. Salsa was ok but the food and service were just so awful I won't be going back
google avatar

Alkeisha S.

Yelp
Las Anita's was the agreed place for lunch since it was a central location for me and my lunch companion. I didn't have any expectations upon arriving since neither of us had been there before, it was just a mutual place. Usually, little unassuming, mom & pop Mexican restaurants have some of the best food, but this place fell short. The food was absolutely bland! We both ordered the fajita taco salad (chicken for me, beef for them) and neither one of us were impressed. I had to add salsa, salt, and pepper to make it edible. The only plus was the nice size water cups. Meh!
google avatar

Craig N.

Yelp
Although admittedly we found this place during COVID ops, and haven't dined in yet, we've ordered takeout now for the 4th time. I have to say, everything has been spot on and delish for takeout quality! Staff is always friendly and attentive when picking up, and also wearing the proper PPE. Speaking of PPE, my best flying bud Jeff and I were flying back from Anchorage where I felt like I was getting sick. So for 6 hours, this poor dude wore his PPE all the way back to protect himself from my belly ache. When we landed the mask impressions took 2 whole days to go away!!! But I digress....We really like this place and can't wait to enjoy some drinks and their food next time when we dine in! Great job guys and keep up the good work!

Yelp
Very good mexican food for a fast lunch during the week. Good size portions and good prices.
google avatar

Yelp
This is the absolute best Mexican restaurant ANYWHERE. BEST SALSA, BEST FOOD, EVERYTHING. I'm a true foodie, grew up in Houston on Monterey house and Los Tios. I drive from Galveston to eat here in clear lake, and I'm never disappointed
google avatar

Bobby L.

Yelp
Don't be fooled by the server who never writes anything down. Very impressive, right up until you get your plate. 3 times I have ordered the same thing, the same way, and 3 times it has been wrong to the table. Not anymore. And if you decide you just HAVE to come and try it yourself, I recommend not coming while Monday Night Raw is on.....they love to gather at the bar and watch wrestling.
google avatar

Yelp
Thank you Carlos and crew for always being so welcoming to our family and especially for last evening when we celebrated a 20th birthday. We loved your tres leches cake and as always the chips, salsa, green sauce and all of our favorite dishes. And skinny margaritas- yum! I always have to steal a French dry or two from one of the grandkid's plates. Great fries! Been coming here for going on 20 years when you opened. It's our place
google avatar

Gigi B.

Yelp
My friend had her celebration for her birthday there yesterday. 4 of us women. We decided to sit outside. The place wasn't busy. The food was good, but the service wasn't. We had to literally call them on our cell phone to ask if our waiter could come outside and ask if we needed anything else. Which we did. Again, the place was not busy. It was around 2:30pm when we were there. I wouldn't recommend anyone to go there.
google avatar

Dale P.

Yelp
The food is standard TexMax but it sure is good. A month does not go by with out at least one trip to Anitas. We have gotten to know Carlos and Danielo, always friendly and great service.
google avatar

Mia W.

Yelp
Food is standard Tex mex. Nothing really to write home about. Grilled tilapia, enchiladas and nachos were all just "ok". A little on the greasier side. The queso on the nachos was bland and not good, the nachos were soggy. I most enjoyed the red salsa. They were fast and friendly with their service too.
google avatar

Evelyn G.

Yelp
I will definitely give them four stars on the service we were meant by the Hostess who told us to sit wherever we would like then a gentleman asked us for a drink order another gentleman brought our chips and salsa and then another gentleman brought our drinks and then the waiter came and took our order I ordered the fish tacos they were tasty the rice had a fabulous flavor I'm not a big fan of refried beans but they were all right I enjoyed the queso with Taco ground beef and the salsa had a fabulous flavor it was spicy the green sauce I didn't much care for my husband had the fajita enchiladas which he said there were good. This restaurant has been in this area for a long time. It's a nice small little neighborhood restaurant by the time we left at 6:15 they had a full house will definitely have to come back again soon.
google avatar

Nataliya M.

Yelp
Very cozy, home style Mexican spot. It's very small compared to the local mexican places. They have decent prices and make homemade tortillas and salsa's. I loved their patio area, the service was great and I left full and happy. The queso comes with delicious crisps that my husband loved. I ordered the Milanesa (fried beef with slices of avocado, tomato, and onions). I felt like I was eating a Cuban dish- and it deff was cooked in a skillet. We went when it was dark out, and enjoyed watching the colorful Endeavor condos change colors.
google avatar

Kimberly L.

Yelp
So. Today in the saga of the salsas.....it looks like the original cold, thicker salsa is back! They do still have the warm salsa, but ew. That's not for us. I'm updating to 4 stars as my final answer (unless they change stuff again) for all around good service, good food and cold salsa. I did dock a star for messing with stuff that ought not to be messed with in the first place though! *whew* Glad they are back to the "norm". I'm not a huge fan of change for the sake of change...

Yelp
This restaurant has fed me ever since I was a small child. Very family oriented, amazing food.

Yelp
Great place to eat! Food is amazing and so is the service. Raul is the best waiter ever!! Also live music on Fridays with Michael Flores!! Always so much fun!
google avatar

Andrew W.

Yelp
Disappointed The Charro beans were like bean soup Here at 2:30 pm About 6-8 people No reason poor service Had to ask for straw Had to ask for napkins My waiter kept sweeping floor Never checked on me Ordered Enchiladas Suizas which have sour cream on top they put red sauce they politely explained they have another dish with sour cream but said yes I was right should have sour cream They apologized for the confusion Ordered side of guacamole excellent Food delivery quick and hot Clean nice atmosphere for budget friendly Tex mex $$$ Family friendly I will be back I do recommend They also have a location in la Porte that is always good called Casa Anita's
google avatar

Tony D.

Yelp
Love going to Las Anita's every Wednesday to hear the live music. Michael the musician is very entertaining and if you haven't gone out there on a Wednesday I highly recommend it. The food is also worth going for and the margaritas are on point!
google avatar

Alice Q.

Yelp
Anita's is a nice local place with consistently good food. This place is better than most of the other Mexican restaurants in the area. Our favorites here include any of the enchilada plates, chile relleno, grilled shrimp, and the mixed skewer grilled. The portions are generous and the ingredients are fresh. The bar has several beers on tap, and also serves up a good margarita.

Christopher V.

Yelp
Garbage. So much worse than years ago. Plus the price is 3 times more. I spent about 20 bucks on one aweful meal. Two bites, check please! Just go out of business already. Raising prices while reducing meal quality will not save you! The guacamole dip is white now, zero avocado in it. No mayonnaise please! I politely paid and left entire meal on table. What waist of money, time and ingredients. Every place I used to like is now cutting corners while price rise. I'm out! No more Anita's. It was always half a$$ed food, now it's worse and double the price. Taco bell is probably less aweful.

S S.

Yelp
Usually pretty good but sometimes food tends to be a hit or miss in terms of flavor. Wish they were more consistent with their dishes. We usually get the chicken and steak fajitas, chicken chimichanga and taco salad. The taco meat could be slightly less salty.
google avatar

Jason M.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite little local places . Super nice people run this place . Very good and VERY strong Margarits that I think are like $2.00 during happy-hour . I like several different combo plates and their chips and salsa ( red and green ) are good but by far , my favorite dish has to be the Tacos Al Pastor ! Hans down , THE best in the area !
google avatar

Whitney V.

Yelp
Wow, we wanted to like this place, but what a disappointment! We went for an early Saturday dinner and we're only the second stable in the whole place. The staff was polite but generally not friendly and throughout our meal our waiter sat in the back talking and reading. The food was the kicker, though. Every single item except the jalapeños was bland. My fajita chicken had no seasoning, the tortillas were dry, the guacamole had NO seasoning at all--it was straight mashed avocados, no salt, no pepper, nothing--the salsa tasted like a canned tomato paste base, and worst of all was my significant other's enchiladas: the enchilada sauce tasted like what comes on the $2.00 frozen El Charro meals in the freezer section. She said she's had tastier sauce from a can. Everything was so tasteless that she could t even finish her meal and finally ate one of my tortillas with a little meat on it. I wouldn't pay to have that meal again, let alone $26 for two plates. With such horrible food and a waiter that did not seem concerned with ensuring we enjoyed our meal, we won't be going back. Find a different place because this place might as well be serving canned sauces and frozen meals!
google avatar

Crissy C.

Yelp
This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the area. No other food in clear lake compares. If you prefer Tex mex or authentic dishes Anita's has both options. The fried avocado with chicken is a good way to start your meal. The staff is friendly, food has always been delivered in a timely fashion. The majority of the staff has been their for years. The strawberry margaritas are amazing. Check it out you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
This small Mexican restaurant in a Seabrook strip mall is A-OK. I had a lunch portion of the beef fajitas. Tender enough, with a nice, peppery snap to them. Service was attentive. I enjoyed the artwork on the walls.
google avatar

Ken H.

Yelp
Well, I guess our experience was different from several other reviews. This was our first time here. In summary, the food was good but the wait staff left a lot to be desired. We enjoyed the meal. The chips were crisp and the red salsa is tasty. I'm not usually a fan of the green and theirs was no different. The taco shell was crisp (a tough, stale shell ruins a taco salad for me). The taco salad was excellent and my wife enjoyed her cheese enchilada plate. The waiters were not pleasant. They weren't unpleasant, just stoic. When you eat out every meal it makes things go down better if the waiter smiles or seems to care whether you're there or not. We had to wait a little to long to have our order taken but after that is was delivered in a reasonable time. If the service had been better I'd probably have given them 5 stars. UPDATE 7/15/2016: Because of the bad service, it's been15 months since I've been here. I came again tonight because my companion wanted Mexican food. Since the first time the wait staff has gotten worse. They were still stoic but did a bad job on top of it. First, we were sharing a dish and they brought the wrong thing. When I pointed this out to the server, instead of apologizing he scowled then snatched and took it back. When he returned he essentially threw a side of sliced jalapenos at the table causing several to dump out on the table. He said and did nothing about this. My companion joked she's never had food thrown at her in a restaurant before. Fortunately we got enough without having to eat off the table. But, I don't think eating off the table is considered service, except maybe if you're eating in a cave. The place was jammed and TOOOO loud. The food was excellent as last time. Given the godawful service and good food it's hard to know how to rate this place. I probably won't be back for at least another year and maybe more. UPUPDATE 9/22/2016: Went again. Tonight the service was still awful, but in addition my meal was not good. On top of everything else they were playing the music toooo loud and there was a little girl fighting with her mother and screaming at the top of her lungs for essentially the entire time we were there. Bad service and bad food and a bad environment can't sustain four stars so I'm docking them one star. UPUPUPdate 11/14/2016: Went again tonight. This is becoming our goto place for Mexican. The service was worse than usual. We were one of only three couples in the entire restaurant, but it took them a long time to bring chips and salsa. Another wait to take our order. When finished, we had to wait maybe five minutes to get our check, then another wait for the waiter to pick up the credit card, then the person at the register was on the phone for a long time and when she got off she didn't attend to our payment. Finally, my wife went to her and asked for it, but then we had to wait for the waiter to bring it. I just can't figure out how to rate this place. The service is consistently awful but the food is good. Can't do 3 1/2 stars, the food is better than 3 but the service is so bad I just can't give them 4 stars. So, what to do? I guess it stays at 3. ___ We've Eaten Out Every Meal for more than 25 years
google avatar

Candice L.

Yelp
I got mixed fajitas and they were not good. The beef was fatty and the chicken was dry. The guacamole was the only good thing and the beans were even bad...
google avatar

Trisha J.

Yelp
As a dietitian and foodie from Los Angeles, I was truly blown away by the Texas burrito and amazing service. It's difficult to find authentic Mexican food, but this place rocks! We will be back!
google avatar

Justin L.

Yelp
This is our favorite local restaurant. The owners and the staff know us by name. Great services and the best quesadillas around.
google avatar

Andy K.

Yelp
I really love their chips and salsa (which is perhaps the most important part of a Mexican restaurant for me), but otherwise they're a bit of a mixed bag. I've had their beef enchiladas and their verde chicken enchiladas, and I wasn't entirely satisfied with either of them, and was disconcerted by the oddly creamy consistency that both of the sauces shared. Service can be a little slow and inattentive, but is friendly. If you live nearby, Anita's certainly isn't a bad choice, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go there.
google avatar

Becky J.

Yelp
Was not impressed. It started with them messing up my to go order and having 2 meals, no big deal thinking I will have dinner for 2 nights. Then I open my carne asada and it is chucks of beef in a sauce with potatoes. The fajitas were just okay but the tortillas were awful. They were thin and oily. When I called about the asada she said "well I thought you said something else so that's what I put in computer, what do you want me to do? I guess I could change it out". Food was okay at best and service was not good. I won't be back. Taco Bell would've had better tortillas.
google avatar

Olga L.

Yelp
On a carry out order: "Nachos con todo" (I am allergic to Dairy, want to be safe ordering a plate without Dairy) no sour cream, and for my surprise it was cheese on it! Call back to let them know got the wrong order, and an employee justify it saying that it is not on the menu but that plate comes with cheese. Try to cover a mistake by laying is not the way to keep customers! Very disappointed!
google avatar

Carrie O.

Yelp
Tried this place on a Friday night when we were craving Mexican food but didn't want to fight the crowds or spend 45 mins waiting for a table at somewhere like Pappasito's or Jimmy Changa's. I wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. The salsa was wonderful and salsa, in my book, can make or break a Mexican restaurant. The rest of our meal was really good as well. Service was prompt & friendly. Prices were reasonable. My only suggestion would be to add chocolate to the free ice cream machine. Not everyone likes vanilla. ;-) We will definitely be going back. Next time I'll try the margaritas....which is the other thing that can make or break a Mexican restaurant.
google avatar

Kim C.

Yelp
OMG this is authentic mexican food at it's best! My friend took me here and I was blown away by the quality. Will be coming back for sure.

Jacob M.

Yelp
Honestly don't know how this place stays in business. It's crappy Tex Mex food that's not really cheap either. Service isn't great either. Only thing going for it is that it's close to home so its convenient, so I randomly find myself there from time to time if neighbors are up there or something. They are so chinchy about stuff and never left a bad review before, but today I ordered margarita on the rocks. It came out looking like ice water it was so clear. Didn't taste like it had any tequila, so I asked for them to re-make it and the waiter got an attitude with me and made a scene about it, so I said nevermind just take it back. I did really want a Marg so later I ordered a frozen margarita instead... since it's already made I figured they couldn't screw it up. When I went to pay he tried to charge me for half of the margarita I sent back. So ridiculous! How chinchy can you get. Obviously they don't care about taking care of their customers.

Yelp
Great food, friendly, always full of locals. Good catering too. Been my favorite place for 10 years.

Yelp
By far the worst Mexican restaurant I've ever had the misfortune of walking into. When my husband and I entered no one acknowledged us and there was no directional signs ex: sit anywhere. I asked a waiter if we just sit and he pointed to a booth then walked away, a couple minutes later another water walked up and asked what we wanted to drink, we ordered and he came back with the wrong thing and walked away. Another waiter brought chips and dip and proceeded to spill warm salsa all over the both of us. Which in itself is not a big deal, until he wiped the table with a dirty rag and offered us nothing to clean ourselves off. I stopped him from walking away and asked for rags and the correct drinks. Much to my dismay he explained he speaks no English and yelled across the room for someone else to come help. We ordered our food and received the right drinks after a while. When the food arrived ( seafood enchiladas and spinach enchiladas) we tried each others and our own. The seafood plate advertised a sour cream sauce, but had a white wine sauce with so much wine in it you could smell Alcohol wafting off the plate all of this mixed with the smell of spoiled seafood made us have second thoughts about our decision to eat here . The spinach plate had thin, watery tomato sauce on it which tasted as if it had been sitting out for hours. i called for our waiter and explained the issue with our food. He just turned and walked away. A couple minutes later what i assume was a manger walked up to me with the check in his hands and explained we would have to pay our bill even if we decided to not eat the food, because it would have to go in the trash now. I asked to speak to a manger and he just stood there staring me down. He then told me I would have to pay for our drinks and get out. He did not offer to bring fresh food, or even for us to order something else. Just for us to pay and go. Which I did, when we stood up the waiter pointed out the door and yelled "leave my place and don't come back". He followed us outside continuing to yell and curse. I'm not sure why it escalated so quickly but I can guarantee that we will never go back. We ended our date night at Village Pizza still in shock about the way we were treated.

Yelp
Food is very tasty in this small strip mall restaurant. Right next to NASA. they make their own tortilla chips, salsa and guacomole. lunch is very cheap. approx $5.50-$6.50. Place is well lit and nicely decorated.

Yelp
What great service and the outdoor patio is awesome! The margaritas are good and the music on the weekends coming from next door is wonderful.
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered the fajitas for two with a lemonade and horchata plus we asked for a spicy sauce & everything was delicious! Highly recommend this place & we'll definitely be coming back.

Yelp
Good simple Mexican food. Big portions nicely prepared. It's not gourmet, but it's not trying to be upscale. I'll be back.
