The Best Restaurants in Salem

"This hole-in-the-wall spot serves piping hot Dominican dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Try the chicharron mofongo with fried green plantains, a hearty carne de res guisada plate with rice and beans, or a handful of savory pastelitos to go." - Celina Colby

I tried my first Guatamalan enchiladas here. They look and taste different. They are lighter and fresher than Mexican enchiladas. It feels like I am eating healthy. I don't know what the red veggies they use on top are, but they are slightly pickled and I like it a lot.

Google
A small authentic Guatemalan restaurant with delicious food. It was my first time trying Guatemalan food, my family is from Obregon, mexico so I wasn't expecting much of a difference but I am pleased to say it was different. My favorite dish was actually the one my friend got. It was a tostada with shredded beats and some type of cheese I have never had but the mix of both ingredients was heaven. I got the Chile Rellenos which was stuffed with ground beef. It was delicious. The rice was full of flavor to! if you know me you know I wont ever eat the rice because it doesnt usually have flavor, but this one WOW! There was two lovely ladies when I went, who make everything by hand. To go to the restroom you actually go through the kitchen so you can see them working away. I will definitely be coming back. only thing is it's pretty small. if you decide to dine-in just know there are 4/5 tables available only.

Google
I've been to many pupuseria. This place has the best pupusas in Lake Forest. This a Guatemalan restaurant that offers, Guatemalan breakfast, caldo, churrasco and other Central American food. So good 💯 I had the pupusas revueltas with salsa and curtido

WOW!!! So delicious 😋. Highly recommend this delicious location off Muirlands. I spotted the beautiful flag flying high from the street and had to stop to check it out. To my amazement, it's a restaurant that this community has been missing for so long. I ordered #6 Chile Rellenos and #7 Rellenitos. Can't wait to come back again.

I have a serious peanut allergy. Asked them multiple times if their food had peanuts and they responded with "no" and assured me nothing they used had peanuts and then handed me a horchata. Drank it and had an allergic reaction because it contained ground peanuts and had a fun trip to the emergency room. Their food looked good but sadly I wasn't able to eat it.

Google
This place is a charmer! The food is delicious and the refried beans are unequaled. Service is excellent also, with lots of smiles and attention. We always feel welcome. Please try Las Delicias!

Yelp
Welcoming environment and delicious homestyle cooking, the chile relleno had a lovely texture while the carne asada was juicy and flavorful. First time to have to have rellenitos - mashed plaintains then filled with beans, rolled into balls, and deep fried - nice sweet and savory flavor comfort food. Pay them a visit if you're around! :)

Yelp
Quick, friendly service. Everything is made from scratch. Colorful ambiance. More spacious inside than expected. Generous portions. I am satisfied with one pupusa and a heap of curtido! Such a comforting meal. Delivery was also great.

Yelp
Las Delicias Guatemala is a recently opened restaurant in Lake Forest at the corner of Muirlands and Ridge Route, in the same strip mall as Burger Town USA. I stopped in because I never had Guatemalan food before so it is a moral imperative to give it a try. LDG offers a limited menu comparing to other Spanish/Mexican restaurants. The menu board simply have items listed under breakfast, lunch, snacks, and drinks. I figured that out using Google Translate since there is no English anywhere. Ordering my food was a challenge as his English was only slightly better than my Spanish. This is obviously a family owned and operated restaurant. The guy in front, taking orders and waiting tables. There are two/three ladies in the kitchen making food to order. With only 6 tables, LDG is relatively small, but nicely decorated. You may want to give it a try when you feel adventurous for Guatemalan food.

Yelp
The best rellenitos. If you are missing home and want some traditional treats, try the chuchito, rellenitos, or go for a Grapette- hard to find this grape soda outside of Guate!

Yelp
Omg! Todo, el restaurante es bien acogedor y el dueño y su hermana son los cocineros también. Me sentí como en Guatemala estando allí y disfrutando las enrolladas de pollo:)

Yelp
I really enjoyed the food here. It was my first time having Guatemalan food and I was in the mood for soup. I ordered their chicken with vegetables soup and it was very good. Came with a side of tortillas, and a small container of onions, lime and cilantro for the soup. Order took about 15 minutes, but that's OK as it means its probably freshly made.

Yelp
Mi gente!!!! Gracias por la comida auténtica. Let's start this review with this is real authentic Guatemalan food. If you have never tried it please do. This is not in any way shape or form Mexican food it's not the same at all. The service was great the people really are authentic. Ambiance 100% it's a Guatemalan. Please try and support this business it's very rare to have our Culture at a near by restaurant.

Yelp
First time trying Guatemalan food and it was delicious! Walked in and it's a fairly small restaurant. It totally looked legit especially with the menu all in Spanish. No English translation on the menu so we were a little lost on the menu. We asked the cashier what she recommends and she looked a little panic and got another customer to come and help translate for us. We kind of pointed at stuff and we ordered some of the stuff I saw on the Yelp reviews for the restaurant. Also ordered drinks and their large drinks are large! Got the Jamaica and Horchata and both were refreshing. Food-5/5! We got this chicken stew that was tomato base with chicken and the chicken literally fell off the bone and melted in your mouth. It had carrots and string beans. We also got the bistek which was beef. Definitely order that one. I think that was our favorite. Birria de tacos-savory and soft with veggies and a green sauce that was spicy and a perfect compliment. Will definitely come back!

Yelp

Yelp
The Pepian De Gallina was delicious! I would say it's a Guatemalan comfort food that comes to mind. The chicken is cooked in a spiced tomato sauce or stew, with carrots and string beans and a side of rice and tortilla. I will definitely come back for more Guatemalan and Mayan comfort dishes!

Yelp
My husband and I wanted to go somewhere new for dinner. We found this place and we are so glad we did! The entrees were delicious. I got the churrasco chapin. Amazing!! It was perfectly seasoned carne asada, delicious black beans and rice, plantains, a fresh vegetable medley. Everything was perfect and a really big portion. My husband got the enchiladas which is not traditional enchiladas it's more of a tostada. But super good fresh ingredients. Lots of shredded veggies with chicken. The chips and bean dip are really tasty too. We kept talking about how good it was throughout the evening. We will definitely be going back. You need to try this place out!

Yelp
Delicious food amazing customer service. The food is a little bit pricey but that's all everything excelente

Yelp
So i tried this place and i got really satisfied by the quality of the food, they are really authentic and using great quality. The only thing they can improve is to put more food for the price they charging. The food portion is not enough. Overall good place

Yelp
Ate here for lunch today. All dishes at the table were excellent - flavors were really good and service was quick and friendly. Tortillas were nice and fluffy and complimented the mains well. Nice portions!

Yelp
This was my first time trying this restaurant. This is a perfect example of, "Little but mighty" the flavor of the food is great. I ordered a Caldo de Rez and it was a huge bowl with carrots, cabbage, green beans, corn on the cob, a big piece of beef that was tender and delicious. It came with cilantro, lime and onions and fresh homemade tortillas just made. I enjoy eating at different countries and cuisines I have not had a better Guatemalan soup. I am very happy this restaurant is only a few minutes away I am definitely bringing friends and family. The service was great, the owner, his nephew and chef were very pleasant and friendly. The restaurant is small but very cozy and welcoming. I always look in the kitchen and around for cleanliness this restaurant did not disappoint me in any way. They sell snacks, have a variety of drinks and sweet bread.

Yelp
We wanted to try something different and we're so glad we found this great Guatemalan restaurant. First, the hospitality was very friendly. We asked about some of the menu dishes and were given a very helpful description. We sat down at a table up front. I liked the decor. It got busier as we sat there and I see why. Second, the food was great! We had bistek encebollado and chicken tamales. The steak was tender and flavorful. The tamales were flavorful (different than Mexican style) and a good size. We had a couple horchatas to top it off. It almost made me feel like I was visiting a friends home for dinner. Come on out to support this wonderful little jewel tucked away behind Walgreens at Ridge Route and Muirlands.

Yelp
I visited Guatemala earlier this year and loved the country and the food, especially the Mayan stews. But I didn't know where I could find them in Orange County. Until today. Las Delicias Guatemala restaurant is new and serves Guatemalan and Mayan cuisine and as far as I know is the only one of its kind in Orange County. My wife and I ordered the Pepian de Gallna, which is a Mayan stew with chicken, tomato, toasted pumpkin seed and chile sauce. The spicy (but not too spicy) stew is served with rice and tortillas. It was fantastic! Very flavorful! The food was as tasty as the Mayan stews I had in Antigua earlier this year. For a drink we had the Pepino y Pina, which is pineapple and cucumber juice. It was a very refreshing drink. The restaurant has a pleasant and relaxing vibe. As a family restaurant the service was very warm and friendly. If you want to try Mayan cuisine, I think this is the only place in Orange County to get it. It's well worth a visit and I'll be back!

Yelp
Never had Guatemalan food before and this place was incredible! I got the caldo de Gallina and it was DELICIOUS. It was so good that I finished mine, and I immediately drove back to get another one for my wife who loved the sample she got of mine. The ambiance is nice too. Few little tables and items from Guatemala. The kind of place you walk into and immediately know the food will be exceptional. We will definitely be back.

Ashley F.

Yelp
The food was really good and the service was very good as the place itself felt very calm.

Yelp
My husband and I tried this place out for a take out dinner. I ordered the Pepian de Gallana and my husband got the Churrasco Chapin. The Pepian was the clear favorite - super flavorful and had a very homey taste to it. It was served with a side of rice and fresh home made tortillas. The Churrasco was also really good - but more of a basic steak and rice dish. The store itself was very quaint - only a few tables for dine in. Very friendly service and our order was ready in 10-15 min. We will definitely be back again whenever we are craving a home cooked authentic meal.

Richard R.

Yelp
Really enjoyed lunch here. We had the Churrasco Chapin and the Pepian De Gallina. It so full of flavor. The homemade tortillas were wonderful. It's a lot of food! Highly recommend

Lileana V.

Yelp
This is a very small restaurant but great quality food. My husband had the churrasco, the quality of the meat was top notch. A big plate. I had the pepian, a typical Guatemalan dish and it was delicious. The menu is limited but super tasty. I would avoid going on a Sunday because they are super busy and the wait was long but definitely worth it.

Andrew J.

Yelp
Real deal. Restaurant staff were so welcoming and patient explaining the dishes which are very reasonably priced and good.

Dora M.

Yelp
I was disappointed with my tamale but my son liked the gallina soup. The place looked clean and looking forward to trying another plate.

Yelp
The food was amazing I took my parents and partner in for my mother's bday. If you are Guatemalan you will love the food and the service . The ambience is all Guatemalan themes and will take you back to your roots just discovered it today and will be definitely eating there moving forward . Veryone was so friendly and amazing food came out fast and hot and was delicious .

Yelp
Best Guatemalan food I've ever had from a restaurant, they took their home cooking and brought it to the restaurant without any changes. I even reheated my leftovers and it tasted just as good as it was fresh. I can't imagine replicating food like this unless you have years of practice and the know-how of Guatemalan culinary traditions. I'm definitely coming back many more times, especially when I want a home-cooked type of meal.

El B.

Yelp
Amazing food and caring staff. I've been here half a dozen times and I'm never disappointed. The enchiladas are amazing, and so is the relleno. Fast service with a smile!

Maria N.

Yelp
Had the Chile Relleno dinner. VERY good. Recommend. Also ordered four other meals for my family. All good.
