Health Department shuts down Las Famosas de Jose and Pho MaiLan with cockroach infestations | Eater Vegas

"Shut down following a June 27 routine inspection that revealed a multi-generational cockroach infestation, including large German and small American roaches on the wall and floor behind and next to the ice machine and sink area and roach feces on an outlet by the ice machine. Other violations during the 19-demerit inspection included chicken held at room temperature, food stored in an outdoor shed, black mold in the ice machine, dirty equipment (cutting board, deli slicer, can opener), needed wall repairs behind the ice machine and fridge, and flies swarming and landing on clean equipment; the place received an 8-demerit A grade on June 28." - Susan Stapleton

Google
Pretty dope it’s 24hrs and it was right by my hotel so we just walked over there and went in and looked over the menu and I ordered a steak and chicken taco combo that came with beans and rice and a little salad and 6 warm corn tortillas the steak was pretty good but I really didn’t care for the chicken it was shredded and the stuff it was cooked in was pretty watery I also ordered a steak burrito and it was seriously bigger than my girlfriends head 😂😂 it the burrito was pretty good as well and I had some fried tortilla with cinnamon and sugar all over it it was pretty tasty all in all it wasn’t a bad stop and like I said at the beginning it’s 24hrs can’t beat that

Google
Great little 24hr Taco Shop with a 90s feel and great food. Went in for the Asada Tacos for a late night snack and was very satisfied. The hot sauces are really good and the resturaunt was clean. Will be coming back for more

Google
This is some of the worst Mexican food I've ever had. I got a California burrito and nachos and both were horrendous. He only gave me 4 sauce and for 8 more, they cups he has are nearly 2/3 smaller then most places use, and he charged me another 8 dollars for the sauce talking about how good it is. The burrito had so many other things in it that there was no meat. I mean how do you mess up a California burrito? It's just some meat, fries and cheese. This thing had lettuce, rice, tomatoes and so much other stuff that literally the last quarter of the burrito was nothing but lettuce and rice and whatever else. The nachos looked like something you'd make if you were drunk or if you were 6. It was one flavor of cheese and they looked like he threw 3 or 4 slices over a pile of nachos and then microwaved them. Usually spots like this that are in a pretty ghetto neighborhood are amazing, but this was a waste of money. I haven't felt this ripped off for a long time. Genuinely bad. Just spend the extra 5 bucks and go to sayulitas and get wayyyyyyy better food and a lot more of it. Don't spend money on this garbage tho.

Google
They say the best places to eat are the Mom and Pop shops or the "hole in the wall"... this place takes the trophy. Food was literally reviving. The young man taking our order was very polite and respectful. Everything was clean and tidy. We will definitely come back to eat here again.

Daniel S.

Google
I love their breakfast burritos! They use French fries and they are thicker than anywhere else around! Never have an issue with order or food here. Close to the strip and very affordable!

Roviere C.

Google
Located in the hood of Las Vegas; so be careful. I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of my experience though. The food was extremely savory and delicious. I asked for their best dish. And with no hesitation she picked. Let's say I almost fell out of my seat from all of the flavor. God bless this place🤤🤤

Google
Found this little hole in the wall on my first visit to Las Vegas. It was so good I went again on my way the the airport. I couldn't remember the name but kind of knew the general location and took me 4 days to figure it out .... but I found it! Still amazing and I'm going tomorrow to get a breakfast burrito. This time I'll write down the address so I can find it the first day! And probably one on the way to the airport too!

Vickie M.

Google
Home of the most amazing breakfast burritos we’ve ever had! My husband and I stopped in before continuing on a long road trip and hadn’t read the sign that said “guaranteed 3 pounds” until after we were sitting down and each of us were holding our own giant burrito. (We each ate most of it and saved the last third or so until we arrived in Albuquerque about ten hours later!) The owner was so nice and makes incredible food. It is in a rough part of town and sadly the customer bathroom gets vandalized pretty much daily so be sure to pee somewhere else before you get there. The food is seriously worth it!

Yelp
Bomb.com bad area but great food and service. Also their creamy red salsa is I will definitely go again.

Zay P.

Yelp
Straight A$$ they warmed up the tortillas in the microwave and act like i wouldn't notice even the carne asada made my stomach hurt and im very upset about this
google avatar

Liz H.

Yelp
I only got a shrimp tostada for $5. It was kind of like shrimp ceviche. I added the salsas from the bar. The best sauce is borracha. Flavorful. They have one that is too spicy to taste. I was still hungry after 1 tostada. Counter service was nice. The place was completely empty when we went. Then when we got a rideshare to pick us up, the driver said it is the most dangerous neighborhood in Las Vegas so be careful. I think my experience was like four stars but we went in broad daylight on a weekday. Also, their specialty is tortas and I probably should have gotten that instead. They are huge and like $28. So everyone's experience probably depends on what you get and when you go.

Levi T.

Yelp
Oh my God!! This is the best food ever! So I was driving by after picking up some McDee's garbage. And I was like oh my God they're open 24 hours. I'm treating myself. So I walk in and I tell the lady behind the counter the exact same thing ... you guys are awesome. I'm so excited to try your food. And she looks at me like a deer in the headlights!! So either she didn't care about my compliment or she didn't understand it? Either way this is the best food ever!

Ranniegail J.

Yelp
if I could give ZERO STARS I would spent over $50 on 3 burritos and 2 aguas the aguas were delicious and so were the salsas getting 6 small cups of extra salsas for almost $6 is also ridiculous but when it comes to the burritos..... we ordered 3 breakfast burritos with carne asada... THE CARNE ASADA WASNT EVEN IN THEM which is crazy since there was an added up charge the Tropicana location is the only one worth going whoever was working at about 1:30-2am need to get retrained on how to make food.
google avatar

S M.

Yelp
The meat was so dry and flavorless- tasted like it stayed out for hours. The lady was super stingy- only gave me two sauces for four tacos and a torta. She looked like she was in a hurry and forgot to give our drink.

Yelp
Came at 1210am after shift, was at the drivethru window for 5 mins, but iguess their night shift didnt want to work, owner should be mad, the night shift is just stealing money
google avatar

Yelp
This hole in the wall place is a must try. My friend told me about it when we were leaving the bar and it's great they are 24 hrs. I decided to get there birria quesadilla. The meat was so tender and juicy with the right amount of melted Oaxaca cheese. Your choice of rice and beans or sour cream and guacamole. Their red salsa was a good balance of smoke and heat.

Ariana Z.

Yelp
First time here and the food was delicious. Asada tacos and torta perfect. Caldo de birria 10/10. Menudo 10/10. Would definitely come again when in Vegas again. Recommend if you're wanting Mexican food to cure a hang over

Jared G.

Yelp
The latina employee in her 20s (idk her name but i'm describing the cashier with mediocre service) she acted like she doesn't speak english, but didn't speak spanish at all. She almost forgot to put the burrito in the bag, and she messed up my girlfriend's burrito. I specifically ordered extra cheese in my B&C and thus burrito hardly has any. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and was very respectful when I called them afterwards because my gf was upset, explained the issue, and she just hung up on me. and yes I recognized her voice. This isn't a language issue, she just doesn't seem like she cares about taking orders properly or cares about handling customer issues. The rest of the employees are amazing and at least my burrito was great, if it weren't for that I probably wouldn't ever come back, but this is specifically an issue with one single employee. Thank you to the older latina employee she knows exactlt what she i doing.

Yelp
Yes this place isn't in the best part of town but just use some common sense and you will be fine. The food here is delicious. It is one of the best take out fast food Mexican restaurant in town. It's way better than any of the bigger 24 hour chains. I had beef fajitas meal and it was wonderful. It had the right amount of spices and the portions are large. My wife had the shrimp Diablo. I tried it and loved it. It was super spicy and had jalapeño peppers throughout the sauce. For a 24 hour restaurant it was clean and the staff was friendly. Cash is best here because they don't take a credit card only ATM cards.
google avatar

Michelle G.

Yelp
Warning: Food Safety & Hygiene protocols aren't being followed 1 star is me being generous! I ordered 2 tacos. The 1st time, 1/2 the meat in 1 of the tacos was warm but the other side was cold as though it was straight out of the fridge. The lady was nice to offer a new taco. But the 2nd time, I pulled out a long hair in the middle of the meat. At this point, being grossed out, I asked for a refund and they refused to refund it but to make a 3rd taco! I'm never eating at this place so asked for a dessert option and offered to pay the additional $1 but they wouldn't accept it. Beyond ridiculous Look at the restroom before you eat here. The restroom of any restaurant tells the hygiene quality of a restaurant. I'm surprised how this place is open for business bcos they definitely do not follow food safety. And this is coming from someone being in the restaurant F&B industry who trains staff on Food Safety.

Yelp
Located in a seedy part of Vegas but the food is actually descent and reasonably priced. Portions are huge and service is friendly. My go-to's are the chimichanga with carnitas and huevos con chorizo. Definitely recommended
google avatar

Yelp
Came here around 9PM Sunday. There was no one else there when we arrived. The lady at the counter was great, answered all our questions patiently. Food came out within five minutes. Every table was a little dirty with small bits of food and sauce on them, but a quick swipe with the plentiful of napkins given to us fixed that. We ordered an asada burrito (rice, onions, choice meat, beans, cilantro) and a California burrito and both were absolutely delicious! It was just the regular burrito but it was thicker than my arm and almost as long! Open salsa bar was good. I liked the vending machines in the back also! When we left, there were three other parties. Parking lot was kind of a mess. There were broken glass everywhere. Overall, would come back.
google avatar

Natalie J.

Yelp
Ordered 5 tacos (asada) and chicken flautas. They offered many varieties of meat. It was quick, enjoyable, and convenient.
google avatar

Matt K.

Yelp
Actually pretty good take-out Mexican good, especially the super shrimp burrito. We also had a cabeza burrito but that much cabeza in one huge burrito was a bit much. Fries - huge portion, but be sure to eat them all in one setting as they don't keep until the next day. Fast friendly service.
google avatar

Jae W.

Yelp
So I went to there first location but it had a sign up. It said free drink if you take a picture and bring it to the other location but when I get there, the lady tells me it's only for a Sprite or Coke. I told her that it doesn't specify that on this note and that they need to put that there so people would know. I wanted a Horchata But she said no. I literally drove 5 miles for no reason and when I complained, she pretended, she didn't understand English. They also had a nine-year-old kid taking orders, and he was not good at it.

Margaret L.

Yelp
I forgot to make a review for this place. But I came into LV on the 15th of April. Found this place near the hotel I was staying at. The area it was located at was not the friendliest looking place. But after going Inside the place is clean, the ladies running it were super nice. Everything tasted great and the burritos were huge! No complaints.

Yelp
We came the morning of June 29 to pick up a carne asada burrito on our way to Bears Best for some golf. It's all it 10 min off the strip and easy to find. The owner/manager was doing everything from taking orders to cooking. His chef doesn't arrive until 9am. They have so many options on the menu including a 3 LB burrito if you're hungry! I would certainly consider it as their regular carne asada burrito was delicious: loaded with carne asada, onions, rice, beans and cheese. There are also three sauce options: green (mild - tangy and more spice), red (hot) and light peach creamy (HOT HOT HOT)! My husband and I shared the burrito and he really enjoyed the HOT HOT HOT sauce. $8.00 and some change for the delicious burrito. Owner/manager had on a face mask and the restaurant was pretty empty at this time in the am. Definitely recommend - really delicious carne asada burrito!
google avatar

Theresa L.

Yelp
This place has reasonable prices, I was getting my nails done close by in the same shopping center. I was wanting a quick bite to eat, and came and spent about $38 one asada plate(plate was on the smaller end) Cheese quesadilla Asada burrito the burrito was filled with too much rice and beans, they skimp on meat. 2 drinks. I was starved so we ordered and ate fast.
google avatar

Bryhan A.

Yelp
Good sized meals and price, taste ok. Good variety too And easy to be in and out., but again taste just ok.

Sonia R.

Yelp
The food was great, we were 4 and each had a different plate, we will definitely be back for dinner. It's great service, economic and the posole is better than my Moms.
google avatar

Jay S.

Yelp
This place reminds me of my home town! I came in around midnight ! The lady was super nice and friendly ! The food was good and the staff was amazing ! The portions are huge for the price! Definitely found this place at random and definitely will be coming back . Good music and good authentic Mexican food!
google avatar

Paco C.

Yelp
Oh man, this place was rough. Barely passes for Mexican food. Que Rico's is legit compared to this place. I'm sure they're good people but must work on their food and service. I mean, come on, how dare you charge me for instant Nescafé coffee? At Starbucks price!?
google avatar

Thai R.

Yelp
This place says 24 hours ALL OVER the building and every time I go at night they're closed. Last night (Monday) I stopped by the drive thru, at 1am, and the lady in the window waves me off and tells me they're closed. Tonight I stop by at 11:52 exactly and the same lady tells me they're closed and that at 11:30 is when they take their last order in the drive thru. Who ever heard of a place closing on the half hour? Closing the drive thru at 11:30 with signs everywhere that say Drive Thru Open 24 hours is not only annoying it's misleading. And this has been going on for months now. Stop being lazy, take down the signs, post your ACTUAL HOURS and run like a normal business. I understand Covid has changed things so change your signs to reflect that. This Yelp listing even has them as 24/7. Frustrating. This used to be a good spot to eat.
google avatar

Jean Z.

Yelp
Exactly what I wanted Exactly what I needed So glad this little shop caught my eye. It will make going to the east side worth it. Good job!
google avatar

Andy R.

Yelp
My review is strictly for the horchata -- This place has the WORST horchata i've ever had, It tasted bland as if it was just whole milk with a sprinkle of cinnamon, There was no 'rice milk' element to it. Can't speak on anything else as this was all i had.
google avatar

Britany G.

Yelp
Yo that girl Ale, is a whole baddie but the tacos are really good and so are the aguas frescas. I love their carne asada Fries and the fact that why do 24 hours.
google avatar

Stephanie G.

Yelp
I was looking for a a place to grab breakfast at 6am before heading out to hike and stumbled upon this heavenly place and I'm glad that I did! The burrito was absolutely delicious and the portion size was huge (I saved half of the burrito for lunch).....and it's open 24/7!
google avatar

Chili B.

Yelp
Not a nice neighborhood. Little hole in the wall. If I'm being completely honest I would like to see an update of their very flu and very sad dining area . Having said that I live the food here . The only reason I don't come more often is a personal medical condition where I have to limit my spicy foods . I've only had the tacos , burritos and tostados here , but I'm eager to try the tortas. I like the flavor here and every time I've come I receive prompt and friendly service . They cover most bases here -with tacos burritos tostadas soups tortas enchiladas and nachos. They offer meats of chicken steak pork tongue and goat . Yes they do have menudo and Pozole. Drinks include sodas and jaimaca tamarindo horchata and more. They do NOT have a restroom avail and accessible to the public , however if you ask they will let you through the kitchen to use the employee bathroom .
google avatar

Kelly T.

Yelp
Not my favorite taco place in town, but it works if you're starving and headed home from the fun hog ranch lol. Inside was clean and the service was fast, bit the food is mediocre at best. I had the al pastor tacos and chips... both were extremely dry. In my opinion, pastor tacos should be moist and juicy. The tortillas were nice, but it could have used 2 because they fell apart on first grab. The chips seemed home made, but might have been baked? I can't put my finger on why they were so dry without being super crisp either...
google avatar

Tammie B.

Yelp
I ordered a giant beef burrito and ate about half and I was stuffed. The beef was so tasty and the rice was good too. Next thing is a giant torta! But my favorite thing was the drive thru, drive up to the window, give your order, pay, food made fresh and not a long wait either! So if your in the neighborhood and in the mood for Mexican food, you must stop by. I like the drive thru option because sometimes I don't want to go in and order.
google avatar

Carlos L.

Yelp
Visiting Vegas for a few days. We came to this places since we love Mexican food. The lady who took our order was very kind and helpful, place looks decent and clean. Food is good but not Wao but for the price you paying you can't be more demanding. They have a good variety of dishes and soups. Coming back ? Yes, we do.

Joel G.

Yelp
They make the best breakfast burritos and the salsa veneno is super spicy and tasteful

Nico C.

Yelp
La verdad que hace falta mucho higiene no lo recomiendo la persona sin lavarse las manos después de cobrarme fue darle vuelta a las tortillas que estaban en la plancha calentándose
google avatar

Liliana M.

Yelp
This place is legit open 24/7 . They have a drive thru. The food is good! Drinks are tasty! Don't really like their horchata water. Salsas could be better but definitely complements the food. The asada burrito & bean and cheese are my to go to! Fast service & very friendly staff!
google avatar

Yelp
I REALLY WANTED TO LOVE THIS PLACE, but I just didn't. One evening, driving around running errands, just wanted a classic, divey, street taco. Haven't found a solid Mex place like that but Las Famosas looked like the perfect spot. At the tail end of an auto repair shop, it looked promising. Ordered two carnitas tacos with verde sauce. Over $6. A little pricey for two small tacos. Oh well, hoped they were amazing. They weren't. They just weren't. The lime, which came with the taco, literally had no juice when squeezed. Dry. The carnitas meat was tough and obviously laying around for quite some time. Dog gone it! I threw it all in the trash at home after the first bite. Very frustrating when you're excited to try something new and it just turns out to be garbage. You should know better. You know full well when meat and lime for that matter, is fresh or if it should be tossed. Very disappointing.

Yelp
Another great find off the beaten path. I ordered two cabeza, two carne asada, two al pastor and one fish taco. Off all of them the al pastor were the best. The cabeza was great and the carne asada, according to my dining partners was "pretty good." The fish taco turn out to be grilled tilapia. My partner was expecting the baja style deep fried. I brought it back to the counter and asked if they indeed offered that variety of fish taco. The owner/cook explained that they only have one deep fryer, primarily for french fries and that frying fish in it would taint the oil. Perfectly understandable. But here's where it gets good. He offered to make another taco, any version I wanted and to go ahead and keep the fish offering. He understood that my partner didn't like it but insisted that I enjoy it myself. I have to admit, it wasn't my style either. HA! Minutes later not only did he bring back a replacement taco, but two of them! Outstanding customer service. They have a self serve salsa bar that has a better than average selection of salsas, a highlight being a very unusual white based sauce that was very spicy. Cheers for offering a Oaxacan based, very very rare salsa. Limes and carrots are also offered. May be considered by many to be a Yelp 3 star, but the customer service absolutely bumps this place to a 4 star. Buche, birria and other varieties of tacos are offered. Location may seem somewhat undesirable, but it is what it is. I will be back and would recommend the place to anyone jonesing for tj style tacos. About 1.5 miles from the strip.

Maze S.

Yelp
The food was no good lest the tv and radio on full blast. "Not a great place". Horchata tasted like it had condensed milk in it. Gross okay. No thank you!
google avatar

Eugene C.

Yelp
Don't listen to the bad reviews. This is my favorite Mexican spot in Las Vegas. Portions are perfect and flavor is excellent. Only thing is the neighborhood is shady, but there's a drive thru to solve that problem.
google avatar

jon m.

Yelp
Excellent food. Friendly service. Funky but fun interior. Very clean. Excellent alternative to the overpriced hoity-toity places on the strip. If you're looking for fancy decor and cloth napkins, go somewhere else. Prices are reasonable (compared with the bay area at least). For the folks saying the neighborhood is iffy my guess is that they've never actually seen a bad area. Maybe if they took a quick tour through east Vegas they'd change their opinion. It's an Hispanic area and not wealthy, but it's far from dangerous. I give it 5 stars.
google avatar

Alyssa L.

Yelp
I got a regular sized steak torta and it was DELICIOUS. I paid about $9. I went back for seconds the next day because it was that good! It's a little sketchy area, but that's where all the good eats are usually located
google avatar

Chuck T.

Yelp
We had a good meal here, they have huge breakfast plates and burritos! We went all around and they had hour + waits for breakfast! Las famosas was empty, we got a great breakfast fast! Give it a try, they are worth it!
google avatar

Adrian L.

Yelp
Hola. Yo Recomiendo este lugar muy buen Servicio al cliente y la comida está Rica buena calidad. Además está muy limpio y en buena localidad. Las tortas son de buena calidad y tienen diferentes tortas. Gracias.
google avatar

Ryan H.

Yelp
Amazing food with amazing staff. I'm half Mexican and have had amazing Mexican food, but this is beyond amazing. I would eat here everyday if I could afford it, but I love my every visit.
google avatar

Rey F.

Yelp
I had a craving for a burrito and they did not disappoint! I had a Carnitas Burrito w/everything except for rice, to go. I didn't wait even 5 minutes and I was on my way. The serving was generous, meaning the regular burrito was larger than most others "super" and they included both salsa rojo & verde. The carnitas was tasty, although it didn't have that crisp I expected, the flavor and value made up for it. Craving satisfied, mission accomplished. I'll definitely be back to try more on the menu.
google avatar

Soreya M.

Yelp
I ordered delivery during covid19 the Verde chilaquiles. Order took longer than usual and when my food arrived, there were no eggs in it. Normally chilaquiles have eggs in it. They did add guacamole and sour cream which was suggested but no eggs in it, just cooked tortilla strips with cheese and green sauce. Could've been better with eggs in it. It was okay

Shayne D.

Yelp
Salsa bar looks disgusting. Drinks don't taste good and they won't exchange or give refund for them. Poor customer service!

Anon P.

Yelp
Went through the drive through and ordered a carne asada burrito and agua fresca. The agua fresca felt super weird and was very pulpy, but the pulp was almost paper like in texture. The burrito was filled with fatty chunks of steak and definitely tasted unseasoned, bland, and old. I took one bite and spit it out. Hopefully it was just an off night for them.
