I should have known that this place was going to ve a dissapointing experience. 7pm on a Thursday night and the place was empty. So i dont like to pass judgement unless i have the facts. Upon arrival i looked at the menu and right away, i could tell it was limited. Since this is supposed to be a salvadorian restaurant, i figure i will taste the tamales and pupusas and if that goes well, i can check the rest of the menu. We order 10 pupusas, 7 chicharron and 3 cheese and loroco. 1 order of tamales de elote con crema and queso, and 1 tamal de pollo. Although the pupusas came out first, they seemed rather big and thick. From experience, thick masa pupusas means that the pupusas will be mostly dough and no filler. On the first bite i can tell that because i bit the edge off first, there was only chicharron near the center of the pupusas. I try to pick up the pupusa with my hand as it is customary to not use a fork and knife to eat them. However, that was not possible. Seems lile the masa had absorbed too much water and it was soft and falling apart once i put the curtido and tomato sauce on it. The curtido itself really had no taste, the tomato sauce was ok, although the chicharron inside the pupusa had a pretty tasty filling. Usually, i eat the entire pupusa, this time i left all the edges out, the worst pupusa was the cheese pupusa. Literally was masa and cheese with no taste. Plain and simple a very awful cheese pupusa, on the menu the cheese pupusa was advertised as "pupusas de queso con loroco". Any old fashion pupusa that has loroco, has a very distinct taste, well this pupusa just had no taste. Next, i had the tamal de pollo. Once again, masa dough, slightly dry and all it had was a big piece of boil potato, not even salt, and some chicken. Honestly, so bad that i only had half. Last but not least the tamales se elote con crema. The crema is usually white, the crema on my plate was yellow with a slight orange color. This is indicative that the crema had been altered with some cornstarch or some other additive and the cream should be savory. The tamal de elote platter had 2 tamales. Sadly we only ate one, the other one was hard, dry and no taste or corn flavor. Tonight was a tremendously dissapointing experience. Oddly enough, just 2 months ago, i came back from my native San Salvador and i was abke to bring 3 dozen pupusas from a local vendor that my parents buy from all the time. Now, i think i better learn how to make them at home because i have yet to find a good salvadorian restaurant in queens.
