Lasai

"Lasai takes its name from the Basque word for “calm” or “tranquillity”. This discreet restaurant in a narrow street in the centre of the city, just a few metres from the river, invites guests to discover its modern take on traditional cuisine via an à la carte and two set menus, all of which showcase dishes with their roots in the region and time-honoured flavours. The decor changes periodically thanks to the varied art exhibitions hosted here." - Michelin Inspector

I had an absolutely splendid evening here! It started the moment I entered, the staff was so friendly and welcoming. Also, the restaurant's ambience is tranquil (as the Restaurant's name suggests). I'm referring to the lights and the interior decoration. The wall panels are an intelligent choice, keeping the conversation volume pleasant even if the restaurant gets full. I chose the Lasai menu, wonderful. I appreciated the simple yet rich and complete flavors. The dessert was a real cherry on the cake! Excellent wine list presented on an interactive tablet, enabling you to make an informed choice. Service remained friendly throughout the evening, and the bill was very reasonable for the quality. Next time I'm in Bilbao, I'll be dining here again!

Wonderful dinner with friends. I highly recommend this restaurant. Service was excellent and attentive. It was our first time ordering a sampling menu and the staff took the time to explain each item, which was artistically presented on the plates. Several items stood out, particularly the first dish (see my photo). Next time, however, I will order an appetizer and a main course so I can focus on fewer, delicious dishes.

The food was absolutely fantastic – every dish from starter to dessert was full of flavor and beautifully prepared. The service was warm and attentive, which made us feel very welcome. The atmosphere was stylish yet cozy, creating the perfect setting for our evening. We had such a wonderful time!

Review of Lasai, Bilbao – Uneven Food and a Disappointing Birthday Dinner I visited Lasai in Bilbao to celebrate my birthday and chose their Crystal Menu. Unfortunately, the experience was uneven and underwhelming, both in terms of food, service, and atmosphere. The meal began with the salad cappuccino and tomato espuma, which was not a good start. The soup was unbalanced – the green component tasted like grass, and the tomato espuma was overly salty and intense, almost like concentrated tomato paste. For the red tuna tartar with crispy nori, the nori had an overpowering fishy taste that dominated the dish. The crispy sphere filled with Idiazabal cheese was heavy, with too much cream or butter, which masked the cheese’s flavor. The following dish, roasted scallop with coconut garlic and sundried tomato tartar and dates, was ok. The dish was served cold, which felt strange and unappetizing. The scallop lacked tenderness, and the strong paste overwhelmed the dish. The flavors felt heavy and unbalanced. The grilled begi handi stuffed with mushroom ragout and codfish trotters with cod foam was the weakest course. The squid had an unpleasant, rubbery texture, and there was far too much squid and not enough mushroom. The sauce didn’t help elevate the dish. The roasted sea bass with caramelized spring onion, grapefruit, and fried capers had unappealing skin and poorly balanced flavors. The main course – beef cooked for 72 hours – was tender, as described, but lacked depth and complexity in taste. Dessert started with pear, marianito, and blood orange, which was overly spiced and overwhelming. Thankfully, the final dessert, Goxua, was genuinely good and ended the meal on a slightly better note. A recurring issue was the bread – it was not particularly appealing and was replenished far too often, making it feel excessive and intrusive. The restaurant was also quite noisy, and some of the plates were scratched, which took away from the overall dining experience. Service was fine but unremarkable – not what you would hope for on a special occasion. All in all, this was a disappointing dinner, especially for a birthday celebration. While some dishes had potential, too many missed the mark. The atmosphere and service failed to elevate the experience. Lasai did not live up to expectations, and I wouldn’t choose it again for a special night.

We had a great time. Not easy to find the entrance 😃, but the experience was there: atmosphere, service and cuisine were excellent. Our favorites: the pork, and the scallops. The beef was underwhelming… The potato puree: out of this world! Looking forward for coming back.

Amazing food, really great flavours! The time between the courses was too short, it felt like we were in a hurry. The waitresses seemed like they stressed around for no reason, even though we didn’t needed it all to be so rushed. But overall really great food and the waitresses were really nice.

What an amazing restaurant! Impeccable from walking in to leaving. Staff were very professional, the chef was incredible, food & wine was absolutely divine. I recommend the Beef Wellington (for 2). All of the dishes were magnificently presented. Very much top end restaurant in Bilbao. Edit 14/02/25: Still an excellent restaurant however we had a minor issue when waiting to be given the menu and wine cards. We had been sat for about 10'. Another couple arrived and were given the menu and wine cards immediately. We asked where ours were? They arrived 5' later. Meanwhile the later table had placed their order and were served their amuse bouche. It was another 5' before our order was taken. That said the service was excellent after that point along with the food and wine.

I can just only highly recommend this place. Tried the tasting menu Crystal. Both, food and service were impeccable. Sommelier had great knowledge about each of the wines they were serving. She really made a difference - pairing wine menu was just spot on. Booking process for the evening was also very easy and professional. Definitely looking forward to come back next time.
