I have a friend who is a certified FREAK for these pies, so naturally, we took a detour on our road trip to try the real deal! We JUST missed breakfast (cue sad face ), so we had to pivot to lunch -- but we're troopers, so we made it work.
We decided to split the onion rings and gumbo (which comes with cornbread fresh outta the oven -- yes please), and we each got a meat pie. Surprise -- we over-ordered! HA.
The meat pie was the highlight for me -- freshly fried, crispy on the outside, but the filling could've used a few more seconds in the fryer to get that piping hot goodness. It was just warmish -- but still fantastic. Had it been hotter? Game over. The gumbo was also tasty with big chunks of sausage and chicken -- solid comfort food vibes. The onion rings, which some Yelpers were raving about, were...fine. Nothing to write home about, but they did the job.
Our server was a total doll -- super sweet and quick with refills. Service was fast and friendly, which always scores points.
Now, about the bathroom... let's just say it's a "get in and get out" situation. It's tucked back through the supply room and gives off serious "don't linger" vibes. But hey, you're here for the pies, not a spa day, right?
All in all, we left full, happy, and with a renewed appreciation for fried goodness. Would I go back? Oh yeah -- but maybe I'd time it better for breakfast next time!
