Chef Tamas Ronyai is Bainbridge Island's newest culinary phenom. He and his associate,Tae Tran, appeared on the scene a few months back and are likely to remain the talk of the town for months ahead. Tamas is a classically trained Chef who has won awards all over Europe and the United States.
The restaurant is only open three days a week, Friday through Sunday. Their entrees are simple: waffles. Light and fluffy and not too sweet, a waffle is the base of every plate. But, that's just the start. After that, it's just one difficult decision after another. Sweet or savory? A savory waffle? Oh my, yes!
In fact, I haven't even started sampling the sweet waffles, yet. Hint, Tamas and Tae are both chocolatiers. So, they know their sweets. But, that's for another day...
Of their savory waffles, I've tried their goulash, a seafood medley, cheesy waffle with tomato soup, croq monsieur, country gravy, and the Reuben. Each one of them merits their own review. Feel free to message me with questions. For now, I'm going to touch on the gravy and dive into the Reuben.
Among the best sausage gravies I've ever had, this traditional roux based cream gravy was topped with bits of crispy bacon and chopped greens. The smooth, rich texture established itself and let the bacon and greens extend the note. A little on the heavy side for the waffle. But, a rock solid breakfast just the same. It's worth mentioning all their entrees come in at @ $10.00.
Tamas prefers to mix up his menu every week. But, the Reuben is so popular, it makes frequent appearances. This dish is layered and, at first glance, looks like an open faced cheese sandwich on a waffle. The magic is in the layers and the care used in their construction. They cure their own corned beef before shaving it and layering it over a fresh made waffle. Then, comes a mild home made Kraut topped with the house Russian dressing. All of this is topped by a final layer of Gruyere cheese. When I eat at this place, I find myself taking smaller bites to extend the length of the meal. It's that good.
