We happened to be staying down the block from the place during what appears to be our annual homage à Paris over our anniversary (what we call our honeymoon trip). Every day we would walk by this little joint on the way to the Metro and it seemed relatively booked but not slammed like Frenchie after some food guru reviews it. We noticed the dishes were presented well and it seemed not too polished, but definitely no slouch. The tables were just so, but not too, how do you say...sans défaut (flawless). It was welcoming, but not bar a vin. To us, this is very, very good.
So one night a couple of weeks ago we ambled in off the street. No reservation but were seated quickly in a table just out of main traffic way enough to be comfortable. Best, they had a prix fixe menu and some fantastic selections of proteins we can find in the States...duck, hare, etc., but not usual fair for us. So we chose our food and then chose a Côte du Rhone to not overpower some of the ingredients with too bold a wine.
The appetizers were duck with root vegetables and butternut ravioli. If entry to the meal meant what we thought then our standard was immediately raised. The main plates were veal (the waiter may have mistaken for lamb, though the menu clear read "veau"), but whatever it was tasted great, and braised hare and parsnip that came together through a sauce made from the jus de lièvre.
Finishing the meal were a tarte au fraises with thyme ice cream and another desert that was ironically memorable, but we can't remember what it was. (I know, I know.)
So, in the interest of time and/or ease we were offered English menus and even though we requested the waiter to use French, but slowly, he generally fell back to English. OK, fine. It wasn't enough to lose a star because his general service met expectations. So, overall Zébulon gets 5 stars. We paid about €135, which is not something we wanted to absorb every night of our vacation, but well worth the value we got. The best part was everything (not sure about the bread, but I hope so) was made in the restaurant from fresh. The flavors sure shone through.
