"The first time we ended up at this restaurant, it was due to a an unfortunate set of circumstances: we were drinking in a pub right next to Waterloo station and then we got hungry. A show at the Old Vic had just finished, which meant Anchor and Hope was too busy, and our mate Steve is allergic to chain restaurants (he’s a proper diva). Things were looking bleak. And then we found The Laughing Gravy. As it turns out, while it certainly isn’t Anchor and Hope, The Laughing Gravy is a perfectly suitable substitute if you find yourself in a similar situation. What might seem at first glance to be a run of the mill British Brasserie actually has quite a few surprises in store, and by that we mean it’ll take you a solid 15 minutes to understand what exactly what’s going on with the menu, thanks to ingredients you’ve never heard of combined with names of dishes you only slightly recognise. The result will likely be that the majority of your party ends up ordering the burger. Which happens to be quite good. But experimentation at The Laughing Gravy does pay off, as even the most unfamiliar of dishes tend to be enjoyable, and the the dessert menu is actually insane. Insane in a good way. Every item on the dessert menu looks like something you might frame instead of eat, and tastes a lot better than eating something in a frame. Skipping that part of this menu would be a very large mistake. The Laughing Gravy may not be your first pick restaurant in this neighborhood, but you want something more exciting than a chain and Anchor and Hope is not an option, this is a very decent back-up plan. Even if you do just end up ordering the burger. Food Rundown Roasted Cauliflower Three Cheese Macaroni This would make it into the top 5 list of mac and cheese in London if we ever make one, but it also wouldn’t make the list because of cauliflower. We’re sticklers for rules, and that’s not supposed to be in mac and cheese. Here, we’ll allow it. Venison Wellington Meat in pastry is always a winner. Rich people meat in pastry is baller. Aberdeen Angus Beef Burger Great burger. Add bacon. Because you’re good at maths. Selvaticas Chocolate And Hazelnut Delice We wanted to hang this on the wall. But that was impractical so we ate it. Salted Caramel Mousse All the words that equate to happiness." - Eileen Twum
"If you and your work crew are the type to spend every Thursday night down the local, drinking the week away, it might be time to shake up your routine a bit. Head to The Laughing Gravy in Southwark. The gastropub vibes mean you can trick even the most jobsworth members of your team into the building and even get them to try one or two twists on traditional dishes like a scallop and crayfish scotch egg, or something from their wildly creative dessert menu. Everyone’s stomachs will be well-lined, so your team might actually be productive on a Friday for once. We said might." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, eileen twum, rianne shlebak
"Hackney wine bar The Laughing Heart has opened an online shop delivering set meals, focaccia, guanciale, frozen dumplings, wine, napkins, single wine glasses and, if you ask nicely, probably a sommelier too. Choose delivery or collection here." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing, rianne shlebak
"You need your privacy. Not because you’re a celebrity or plan on discussing state secrets over your G&T, but because right now it’s kind of nice to get together with people without wondering if you should be wearing a full hazmat suit. Enter the Laughing Heart’s private space, The Cave. It’s available for private discos that are less secondary school, mini-pizza vibes, and more grown-up fun. Expect a cool, slightly moody space, great snacks, and your own private bar. Head to their website for the details." - heidi lauth beasley
"The Laughing Heart arguably sounds like the self-help book we all need right now, but it’s actually a cool, neighbourhood spot in Hackney that is super popular with locals thanks its eclectic menu and, importantly, its great selection of wines. Click here to see their reds, whites, fizz, rosé, spirits, and skin contact options that start from £19. They’re delivering in and around Hackney." - heidi lauth beasley, jake missing
