Primo Kid-Friendly Restaurants in Portland

"Laughing Planet has been a regional staple in Oregon and Southwest Washington for years, with its vegetable-packed fare. Laughing Planet also caters to those with gluten-free or vegan diets, which means there’s something for all kids — even picky eaters. Mini burritos or mini quesadillas made with pinto or black beans can come with steamed broccoli or corn, along with a choice of apple juice or milk. Laughing Planet’s Lil Spanky’s bowl is the gluten-free option for kiddos, with mashed potatoes, steamed broccoli, corn, and cheddar cheese. Or choose your own adventure with the kid’s Trifecta bowl: brown, white, or jasmine rice, along with a side of broccoli, green beans, veggies, yams, or mashed potatoes; proteins like tofu, tempeh, or chicken are optional. The restaurant also has two smoothies specifically for kids — namely berry-peach and mango-banana." - Jenni Moore, Levi Rogers

I ordered a zappatista salad with extra protein, avocado, corn and grilled vegetables for lunch along with a green drink and lemonade. The salad was good, but the extra order of avocado was NOT worth it, you barely get anything additional. There was a single slice of avocado for $3.60 extra. The green drink and lemonade were both good, green drink has the ginger spice which was amazing!

Google
First time at this location, but the good is consistent with the other locations. This time I decided to try the chicken burrito. The portion size is good and the flavors were there. Get the extra Pico and Hot sauce to give it that extra kick.

Google
Best bowl of food I’ve had in a long time! Flavors they pack into the Thai bowl was amazing. Texture of tofu was meaty and rice sticky in a wonderful way.

Google
I've been coming to this location since they've moved from Lovejoy. Nobody else makes a Southwestern Green Chili Bowl as good as these guys. They're braised beef is grass fed by the way and I tried the chicken today and just as good! Well, this review is getting edited to June of 2025. I'm sorry I ruined the front counter girls day by coming in. I've never felt so unwelcome at an establishment I've been coming to for 13 years. The cook was awesome but from now on I will be going to Hollywood location where they make you feel welcome and friendly.

Google
3 weeks in a row and the lunch team can't get an order right. I make 1 modification every order and somehow it comes out wrong. I ask for no broccoli on a thai bowl Week 1. Got a Thai bowl mixed with a Korean bowl Week 2. Received broccoli Week 3. Received no veggies in the thai bowl I don't know what quality check Franz has in place but I don't think I will be giving this LP location for some time

Google
Laughing Planet may be the last affordable, healthy and non-pretentious restaurant in Portland. I've been eating here for over a decade and it's never steered me wrong. I can always count on it to be fresh and flavorful. I'm a huge fan of their Zappatista Salad and chili with queso. That lasts me 2 meals easy and it's under $25. This place is a Portland gem and must be protected. Eat here! It's good all around!

Google
Her name: Audrey by the way- pink hair braces- horrible attitude- I have been coming here for more than three years since I live three blocks away order the same thing people know me by name -ordered a take out like I always do-I said may I have a quesadilla and I ordered a small side of chips with a small side of melted aged cheddar dip which is on their menu, -and asked the cashier to repeat it back. It was the same price as it always has been for the last three years I went and picked it up walked home opened the bag. There was no cheese in a white bowl-so I walked back and said my order was mistaken. She said cheese is in the box with the quesadilla. I said sorry about that. I've never seen it in the box so I walk home AND I also I tipped again. I open the box. It is a small plastic container the same used for small salas but with regular cheese off a block cut into15 small slices- cold - I get in my car and drive back. I shown her and she snarks you need to specify and say queso & to which I said I ordered directly off your menu! she goes back-and-forth - I ask may I have your name? She says no I'm not obligated to give it to you. then she says if you want your order right you have to say queso when it says aged melted cheddar and I get unmelted cheese that is not melted & would cost $.75 so not only is my order not match up- but both times I came isitting there so not only and with both encounters but then when I asked for a name and she said I'm not obligated to - because I said I don't feel that I was wrong ordering off your menu- she said our phone cuts and I said I had the representative repeat it back to me . . I enjoy going there even tip 30% on each of my orders an! This is what I received- keep in mind I ordered a small melted aged cheddar cheese with a side of small chips- and an amazing grace burrito which cost 10.00 dollars and added TEMPEH for 3.50 - I payed 18.50- and again a small aged melted cheddar cheese with chips cost 7.50- but she said the serving small size container where they put salas with cold chopped up block cheese cost the same when it's not even on the menu- hard to believe- when the cheese is not even melted! truly she did not like me saying that she messed up because apparently I need to order the way that she Says or I won't get the right food even though she could possibly look at the receipt maybe one of the three times I came in and seen that the price didn't match up when I hand you a $20 bill and you give me a quesadilla and if you would just read the receipt instead of taking the tip but I mean that's a lot to ask... what really was weird. She said the back even agreed that I ordered something. That's not even on the menu. There is no side of cut up cheese. She doesn't have to have any customer service skills, not giving her out is so random to say to a regular-just screams I know I messed up. IF she would've been polite. I would've apologized I will start ordering it as queso. I don't think that a salsa side the size of an inch and a half with 16 small strands of cold cheese would cost seven dollars and then to act like I'm offending her by calmly being polite and asking for her name . ( all three times I came in - yes check your cameras ) was texting- and acted like I interrupted her when I originally picked up my order, didn't know what I ordered. Then I come back Didn't check again-THE ORDER !then may have seen the prices don't match up And I've been going three years so if I made a mistake, sure I should've opened the box when she said it was inside I can take that and I will say sorry but i trusted her word my fault agreed- but when this person is trying to argue with you because they're upset about something or their job which I can understand I'm human. Look at the receipt if someone gets chips and is charged and says MELTED cheddar cheese I don't want cold, chopped up one the side, If I ordered chips and cheese, am I gonna make my own nachosv(that means you literally aren’t doing your job ) unmelted cheese. horrible needs to be fired.

Google
amazing food and awesome packaging!! i picked up a to-go order and took a scooter home. i ended up falling in a SUPER graceful way, and ended up kicking the lemonade into the inner section while simultaneously stomping my beautiful bag of food. all of it was still intact!!! the lid on the lemonade stayed on tight too, i was shocked! food was awesome and still hot when i got home. staff was also super pleasant!! i don’t remember their name, just that they were really cool!

Yelp
Food here is always tasty, NOT boring; hot.... when it's supposed to be . Service - friendly and efficient ; food arrives fast And atmosphere is great mix of world ambient and delivered in surround sound by great speakers. Clean and modern interiors. Not my first time here NOR my last. Keep up the great work!

Dave K.

Yelp
Its more like 3.5 stars as it's not a very fancy place but decent one Food was very tasty, we only had crispy quesadilla and veggie burrito, both were good size and tasty. Service was good, and place was nice, very close to NW23RD st. There was outdoor seating too.

Yelp
Loooooved this spot!!!! I needed a healthy food break after eating my way through Portland and we just happened to walk by this spot. I was worried because there was not a soul in side LOL. Usually that's a bad sign for a food spot...but no no. This place was delicious! Excellent service, since I had never been here, I had a bunch of questions. The person who helped me was super nice and answered all my annoying menu questions with ease. She really helped me pick out what I wanted. Their menu is actually pretty big, lots of great options! I went with the Kale salad. I think it had a cooler name but I can't remember lol. It was super fresh and tasty! Loved all the added ingredients, it was just a well thought out salad compilation. My veggie quesadilla was pretty good too. I think it had portobello mushrooms in it which are my fav. So, wins all around! Great spot!

Yelp
Fresh, clean, healthy and yum! I have always loved laughing planet for a tasty nutritious and fulfilling meal. The service is great - always very nice and friendly. This location is new and isn't busy and the murals inside are adorable. Food came out super fast. It's got a fun ambience that's good for kids. Price is about $15 per person, & you'll leave satisfied. I wouldn't say that it's "omfg" delicious but I often crave it and it's healthy and yummy for me, plus lots of vegan options. I love how colorful the food and whole restaurant experience is.

Yelp
This was my third visit to Portland, and although I don't have plans to return I might consider it to have this place again! The food was absolutely delicious. Vegan and non vegan options. Truly nothing in my dish that I could complain about, it was perfect. There are just some restaurants you wish you could take back home with you and this is one of them.

Yelp
Came in last week for a Thai bowl and some other vegan items. Service was courteous and prompt. Prices are still average for this type of food. I did find it weird that they don't have siracha or some sort of asian hot sauce, this should be changed. The food was ready fairly quickly and I took it home to eat it. Everything was cooked well and the packaging was nice! I will be back.
google avatar

Yelp
The quinoa based harvest bowl with a side of seasonal delicata squash was tasty. The vegan chili was a little bland but perhaps they were erring on the side of caution to cater to all tastes. Cashier was friendly. We'll make sure to visit again on our next trip to Portland!

Yelp
5 stars for the black bean hummus, 3 stars for the kale Caesar. I just expected the Caesar to be a bit "caesar-y" .. however, i want this black bean hummus every day of my life. Everything was fresh and would definitely try more salads

Yelp
Usually, when I come in I get ignored....but not like today. Today I was ignored for a good long while. Not even a hello, we will be with you in a moment. Also, since it's a warm day out, they had the AC cranked up and it was very cold. (I didn't think to bring a coat since it's an 80 degree day out) Anyhow, we left and decided to get food at Ling's Garden Chinese food next door and it was a whole different experience. Very welcoming, kind, and fast to say hello.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place, delicious food, nice ambiance, and very good about dietary concerns. Very well priced as well.
google avatar

Kaija J.

Yelp
I tried ordering online and won't do it again. The Thai burrito was tasty, no complaints there. However, because I failed to see the part about specifying which TYPE of salsa I got nothing but a tiny bag of chips for $4. What a disappointment. When I tried to give feedback online to the store's website, there was no option for that, just contact your location. I won't be online ordering again using their app. Basically it sucks.

Yelp
Quality has eroded since august. I've called and reported to management each time. The attached photo shows a piece of hard black plastic that was in my kale salad from a couple of days ago. I'm going to try a different location because this is the 2nd time I've discovered plastic in my salad from the Hollywood location.

Yelp
I am an occasional visitor to laughing planet. Burritos typically the Woodstock and Mississippi locations. I started going back to them a few weeks ago when a friend of mine came into town and wanted some vegetarian organic options from a high-quality place. So I took her there. We had a bite and it was great. Based on that memory, I went back to this Hollywood location I was out canvassing and got in before they closed. I went up to the counter as usual, and I ordered a hibiscus tea and this time I wanted a shredded beef burrito. The cashier took my order. However, here's where things got weird. I told him I wanted a shredded beef burrito. He charged me for a chicken burrito however, when my burrito came, he said did I order the shredded beef burrito I took the order. I didn't realize until I was over halfway through the burrito that I was not eating a shredded beef burrito mainly because the meat was at the opposite end of the burrito. when I went up to the counter to ask about this, the cashier took my receipt and stated that I ordered a chicken burrito, which I said I did not. They were closed. Didn't wanna deal with us so we got sent out not much can be done about it because they took the receipt for the second week in front of them on. Why did you charge me for a chicken burrito I asked beef burrito I didn't really get a satisfactory answer from them and they were kind of very dismissive so I left.

Yelp
First time visiting Portland. I ordered a Korean bbq bowl, the taste was amazing, and the portion was big! They have so many food options and Vegan as well. I recommend this place.

Yelp
Five Stars for the Spanky's bowl as I love anything with mashed potatoes! The restaurant was very clean and service was good. Will be back on my next visit to the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is pretty tasty, presentation and quantity was lacking, even after doubling protien
google avatar

Charlie T.

Yelp
A great place to get some healthier eats at a reasonable price. I tried the grilled chicken burrito this time and was pleased with it. The portion size was good and the chicken had good flavor (wasn't dry). It was a plus to have some extra Pico and hot sauce for that extra kick. The staff was also friendly and accommodating when taking the order.
google avatar

Yelp
Hearty and healthy meals that aren't so guilty (even if you get a burrito haha). I've passed by a couple times when in the area but actually never stopped in. They have an open and clean space and we came near closing but the staff was super kind to give recommendations and let us take our time. We ended up getting a small highway to kale salad, bubba burrito, and paleo bowl with braised beef to share between two people. Initially I was a little worried around the protein portion with my bowl based on other reviews but it was plenty in my order! I am one of those people that prefer kale to arugula or lettuce as my base for salads so I really enjoyed how light the highway to kale salad was and that you could get half portions. The cranberries and pumpkin seeds add a nice touch. I liked the bowl as well and the veggies were cooked well. The burrito was my fave and was super filling. If you're like me I tried adding the braised beef on the burrito and it was super tasty with a mixture of their green and mango salsa. Yum! Overall, the food items were fresh, hearty, and filling without putting me in a food coma. Staff was great and I am curious to try their mushroom tacos and cookies so I will be back another time! As we were waiting for our order there was constantly people coming in for pick up which is always a good sign!
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
Called to ask about an item during posted business hours and was told they were closed. When asking why they were closing before stated hours, the manager said quote: "Frankly, thats none of your business. How DARE you" before slamming the receiver down. This is unacceptable and its selfish. You affevt customers because you want to skip out of work early? Well then go be a digital nomad. You are an embarrassment to your establishment.
google avatar

Agnes D.

Yelp
Very tasty pork tacos... not even salty at all which i love! I shoulda ordered two... Also tried the grilled chicken burrito with beans, brown rice with bbq sauce... it was tasty and again, love that their items are not salty! Excellent service!

Ida M.

Yelp
We ordered Vegan food, Harvest bowl and Thai Bowl. Both were delicious. The place is very clean. The staff was very friendly and helpful with giving information about sauces.
google avatar

Kammil J.

Yelp
My meal was amazing I enjoyed it I didn't care for my chickpeas being hard. My boyfriend didn't really enjoy his, not enough flavor.
google avatar

Yelp
Had the mushroom tacos and they were delicious! We enjoyed 2 yummy smoothies. Service was friendly and fast. Lots of room to eat inside.

Yelp
Healthy, delicious and satisfying! Yes, food prepared fast can be all three of these! Laughing Planet creates bowls, burritos, smoothies and a variety of flavorful sauces with lots of Vegan, Vegetarian and Gluten free options making it an easy choice if you are seeking a restaurant that can easily accommodate a variety of needs. And while they have many Mexican and southwestern options, they create bowls and meals with in a variety of flavor palettes like Greek, Thai, Asian, and Italian. Lots of protein choices - chicken, beans, beef, veggie burgers to name a few. Portions are good, not excessive. Prices are on the higher side which is typical when ingredients are fresh. All in all, a great option. Nothing that wows me because I can and do make a lot of bowls at home, but having someone else to all the chopping and assembly is a treat!

Maxwell G.

Yelp
Food is great, and if you're in and you see an employee called Remi you should tip her handsomely and just generally be cool to her because she's super cool and compassionate. If she's that cool I'm sure the rest of the staff must be too. Go get awesome food and tip awesome people. These guys deserve it.

Kitty K.

Yelp
We've always enjoyed the food at Laughing Planet. The regular menu items are consistently delicious, and the daily specials are fantastic too. The service is excellent. Nothing about this restaurant ever disappoints. This is a vegan-friendly establishment but there are plenty of menu options for carnivore friends. It's also suitable for all ages. The kitschy Godzilla and dinosaur-themed decor is fun to look at, not just for children but for adults. The location is good too. It's right in the middle of downtown Hollywood, so it's within easy walking distance of other shops and restaurants. You will never have to park your car more than a block or two away.
google avatar

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
I love this place! it's consistent, affordable, the staff is nice, and it seems really clean. I get the grilled veggie quesadilla and the cruchero quesadilla usually and they're both so gooood. Online ordering is easy and the food is ready fast.
google avatar

Kaagen M.

Yelp
Great flavor and quick. I got Paleo bowl and wifey got a salad. Seemed like quality ingredients.
google avatar

Christen G.

Yelp
Bizarre food. I got the "Korean" bowl.. I shouldn't have. Wasn't good. Weird ass food IMO. If you like Cafe Yumm, you're gonna like this place.
google avatar

Nyír V.

Yelp
I think I would title this review with "I don't get it". I really WANT to love this place, but it seems a little bland to me. My wrap was not mixed very well and I know there was supposed to be some sort of "bbq sauce" in there but I was never able to taste it. Even when I put some Cholula sauce and salt I had at home on it I still felt pretty meh about it. The chips clearly came from some large bag or box and were slightly on the stale side, plus I think there was only 3 in there that were whole - the rest were chips of chips. Or is that called a shard? WTF do you call a piece of a chip anyhow? I know there are a lot of loyal Laughing Planet fans, so I am wondering if I just got there on a bad day. I will try again and see what happens.
google avatar

Frances L.

Yelp
I've seen these popping up around the city so decided to give them a try, they are little pricey for the size of the meal you receive, but still filling. They have seasonal specials and everything is fresh. Very spacious interior with modern decor and vegetarian options for all dishes. Great for lunch
google avatar

Rohit T.

Yelp
In search for a healthy food spot, my gf and I stumbled across this place. Immediately through the door we liked the vibe of the whole place. Nice modern seating, styling and structure inside. Our cashier was very kind and helped answer many of our questions such as portions and dressing recommendations. Here's what we ordered: chips and med salsa (perfect amount of spice, and not too spicy), Bollywood bowl with corn tortillas, veggie chili, salad with avocado lime dressing, berry berry good smoothies and a chocolate chip cookie. The Bollywood bowl felt a little dry, I was expecting more sauce on it but still it had fresh healthy ingredients. I made tacos from the tortillas and the bowl and topped it off with the avocado lime dressing and that really brought the flavors together. My gf really enjoyed the chilli. It was full good flavor. The smoothies were a really great juice to cool off. They are 20z size so we split one together. The chocolate chip cookie was amazing too. The sea salt on it added another layer and was a perfect dessert! Would definitely recommend this place and would go back again to try some more items on their menu.

Adaptive R.

Yelp
I love this place because you can sub ingredients such as rice for quinoa. Only issue is they forget to add the things you order nearly every time. I don't know if its because I eat here so often or what. Its a habit like " I made the burrito a bowl so they will forget to add the cheese" and sure enough no cheese. No biggie though just have to ask for cheese though it makes me feel like a karen.
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
Veggie bowl - decent; certainly not bad but nothing too special so I wouldn't order it again, at least anytime soon. Too many other options available.
google avatar

Luna B.

Yelp
This place is always amazing, their food is fresh and healthy . The service is great and quick every time. I'm never disappointed!!

Scott M.

Yelp
My family likes getting take-out here so I bear down and take it like a man. I have ordered three meals from this restaurant and I just don't like the food... I wish I did. Sorry, to me the food is bland, or too much vinegar, or just not tasty. I will say it is healthy for me because i end up skipping a meal, I hear that fasting is healthy. Tonight I had the Korean BBQ, which is a couple small slices of chicken, a bunch of cabbage soaked in vinegar on top of brown rice. If I ate this everyday I would live forever but I would rather eat almost anything else and die 10 years earlier.

Caroll S.

Yelp
Normally love this place, but skimpy on the bbq beef. Ask for double protein unless you want a bowl of cabbage and rice. Normally would highly recommend this place, but wasn't worth the 40 bucks I spent. Super tasty, just kinda not worth it this time around. Again, food is tasty but just deff ask for extra protein
google avatar

Eduardo V.

Yelp
Good light meal. The Korean BBQ bowl was a bit light with the protein, mostly greens and rice. Not terrible but not great.
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
I have mixed feelings. On one hand the food itself isn't bad and flavors balance well, but I feel the price really is just too high for what you get. Serving sizes are on the smaller side. Service is friendly but not exceptional. When you first walk in it's actually kind of confusing because theres a menu board over the cash register, but it's only the 2 specials and drinks. We thought this was literally all they served, but then we noticed the full menu. Idk, that just threw me off. We ended up just ordering the Moroccan special. Not bad. But again, not amazing or particularly filling for $12.50, especially because the bulk of it was couscous.
google avatar

Tyler B.

Yelp
If I could give them 3.5 stars I would but overall I enjoyed my meal and service so I'll bump them up to 4. Food was tasty, hot sauce was good and service was fine. Serving sizes could be bigger but overall a pleasant experience.

Nat D.

Yelp
I'd leave ZERO stars if possible. This location is their worst location, do not go here. Their prices increase, while quality decreases. The staff pays zero attention to details or what you order. If you ask for something on the side, they put it in the bowl. If you ask for modifications to remove an ingredient, they will still put it in the bowl but underneath another ingredient so you can't see it until you get home. I've given them many chances but they keep messing up my order to the point where I can't fix it myself. I will no longer come back to this location I'm fed up with wasting $12.50 on a bowl that isn't made correctly and not edible due to my dairy allergies.
google avatar

Diana B.

Yelp
First time in, we wanted some bowls and burritos. This place has bowls, burritos, and smoothies. The location was clean, the service was quick and nice, and the food was tasty. We ordered a smoothie (delicious!), burrito (chicken and it was perfect size, a bowl (it was a vegetarian one - I love how many options they had), and a chocolate chip cookie which was delicious! Will definitely return
google avatar

Tanya A.

Yelp
Delicious! Reminded me of Freebirds before it got big. I got the veggie bean and cheese burrito.it was incredible but super messy! They did not make the burrito tight so it was falling apart. Worst thing to happen to a burrito. The sauces were my favorite -- flavorful and spicy but didn't overpower the burrito, not even the habanero. My husband got the vindaloo special. He liked it but it wasn't a normal burrito. It was an affordable dinner with nice patio seating for the summer. Still have much to see in Portland so I may not be back again soon, but good place to keep in mind!

Krista K.

Yelp
Such good, healthy, eco-conscious food. Friendly service, fast, clean. Loved it, would return any time I'm in Portland!

Yelp
When I lived right next to Laughing Planet, I totally underestimated this place. LP is what every neighborhood needs: an affordable, healthy, locally-grown cafe with a seasonal menu and vegan options. Their menu is creative, and offers something for everyone. I don't usually crave LP, but when I'm half starved and looking for something filling and good for me, LP is always there. It prevents a desperate run to burgers-and-fries fast food. LP understands somedays i want to keep it extra healthy and make it a salad with tempeh instead of meat. It's also there for me when I need a massive, gut-busting burrito made fresh from whole food. Today's epiphany occurred after walking around to 8 restaurants in the rain, desperately searching for a St Patrick's day menu. Really I wanted shepherds pie. After several responses of "we don't have that/a special menu today", I was willing to compromise. I was just looking for mashed potatoes. Whatever. It's fine. Then I walked by LP. I remembered their mashed potato bowl. It would be les than $15 and fill me up. Progress! THEN I saw their seasonal menu - an IRISH bowl (or burrito, you do you). For $9.50, there was a mound of Yukon gold mashed potatoes, some crunch kraut, sweet peas and carrots, shredded corn beef, and a tangy mustard dressing. LP is what I had no idea I wanted, but what I definitely needed. Now I'm going next door for some mango lassi, and then on to home where I will not fall into a food coma, but be able to enjoy my afternoon, thankful and sated.

Yelp
Place your order online and then wait in line with 5 other people at lunchtime who are taking their sweet time placing their order. Man at the counter was rude when I told him I was just picking up my prepaid order online order and told me to get to the back of the line. WHAT?! A woman who was apparently an employee was sitting at the bar drinking coffee. Only after all the other people placed their orders did she get up to grab my premade lunch that has just been sitting there the entire time. This place has employees who have no concept of time.

Michael L.

Yelp
This was a cute little indie sorta Mexican place! The cider was delicious, the burritos were pretty good, and the chips and guacamole was fantastic!

Laughing Planet Nestled in Nob Hill, a great alternative resto for the conscious minded eater. Luckily, we were on a health kick and would rather here for less complicated order/choice than that of the standard mouthwatering restaurants in the area. Menu is plentiful with great choices and I settled for the Paleo Bowl. A bowl of sauteed mix veggies, mainly kale, squash, green beans with serving of marinated shredded beef with a sort of chili verde sauce. It was tasty, satisfying. Roughly 400cal for the bowl of full nutrient dense calories-would rather than a satisfying, carb loaded, salt infused french fries. A nice little touch was the availability of an optional self addition of amino acid or other hot sauce type of variety near the watering hole. My partner in crime had the quesadilla. It was fine. Standard quesadilla. Would definitely consider this healthy type option on the next time we are about and in the vicinity. Thanks for the healthy, tasty alternative! 4/5* Facility-Ambience, Cleanliness (street parking) 4/5* Taste 5* Staff 4* Value

Yelp
The peanut butter and jelly shake I can't say enough about. It's thePerfect guilt free snack on a hot day.
