Laurel

"A passionately run cellar restaurant with a vaulted brick ceiling; upstairs is a coffee-cum-book-shop by day, which morphs into a wine bar serving snacks at night. Menus bring together Hungarian and Asian influences, while the wine list focuses on forward-thinking Hungarian winemakers. Desserts are a highlight, and service is smooth and efficient." - Michelin Inspector

MICHELIN Guide Budapest : two typical neighborhood restaurants take a new look at Hungarian traditions

"A discreet gem on the Pest side, where a warmly lit window reveals a bar of natural materials and a mezzanine lined with books devoted to Béla Hamvas, leads down to a beautifully vaulted cellar dining room hidden just below the Baberligét bookstore. Directed by Gergely Báthory, the concept is smart and funky like Erzsébetváros: guests can read or buy a book upstairs, then dine downstairs overlooking the glassed kitchen of French-trained chef Ádám Mede before returning for a quiet drink above. The wine program, curated by sommelier Peter Tüű and housed in a pretty vault adjoining the dining room, excels in both Hungarian and international selections. Mede preserves traditional Hungarian taste with local ingredients—freshwater fish, plums, mangalica—and revives forgotten bites like a regional deep-fried donut made with a rose-shaped metal tool served as an appetizer, plus a Gerbeaud slice reimagined with duck fat instead of chocolate. His open-minded love of Asian, especially Japanese, cuisine brings delicate sparks: sudachi kosho brightens Hungarian water buffalo, and shiso lends clove-and-cinnamon perfume to an exquisite traditional plum strudel by pastry chef Zsuzsanna Ötvös. Responding to demand, the team also offers a vegan eight-course menu that blends Hungarian ingredients, French technique, and Asian influences—think Japanese seaweed and green tea with local apples, and kumquat meeting tarte Tatin." - Le Guide MICHELIN

This wasn't just dinner, it was an experience. We had the vegan tasting menu and it was phenomenal. Every dish was matched perfectly to local wines. Staff were so lovely and the chef made us some special lamingtons. If you want a special treat, I highly recommend.

Laurel, nestled on the Pest side near the Oktogon metro station, offers a fine dining experience that’s both elegant and comfortable. Before our visit, I requested a pescatarian menu, which was readily accommodated by mixing dishes from their regular and vegetarian options. The wine pairings, recommended by a knowledgeable sommelier, complemented our meals well. The restaurant's emphasis on texture in its dishes was notable, though we personally would have preferred bolder flavors. This preference for more pronounced tastes is simply our own. Throughout our dinner, the service was attentive and thorough, making sure we felt well-cared for.

I came here twice, both in 2021 in February then April. Quite frankly both times were the most intimate and amazing dining experiences I’ve experienced. The main restaurant was still closed to in person dining so we ate in the next door flat with a maximum of 6 people. Every single dish was meticulously prepared and beautifully presented. The benefit of flat dining meant we were able to watch the final assembly or even cooking done right in front of us - not something you usually get at a restaurant like this. The overall experience felt more personal and inclusive and less managed. Really have to give credit to the amazing waitstaff for also working through language barriers to deliver top of the line service and explaining dishes in great detail. Their knowledge of the ingredients and wine was truly remarkable. The thoughtfulness of the ingredients, complexity and synthesis of contrasting flavors was absolutely stunning. Absolutely must visit if you can!

I must tell that this was our best restaurant experience ever. Laurel represents the very best of fine dining, with wonderfully accommodating staff, food of the highest quality and great wine choices of course. We enjoyed a splendid 3 hour dinner, we tried both the chef's and the vegan tasting menu, and I can only recommend all couples to do the same. Zsuzsi's desserts oftentimes hitting the peak of flavor combinations that made our brains go mushy with euphoria. The wine pairings were at least as good as Péter's professional, yet light and funny presentations. We can only recommend the place to everyone, an unforgettable experience! Thank you!

Google
Really good michellin guide experience. The menu was surprisingly big, i arrived hungry and left completely full. Not a to criticize as i rated the place 5* but some comments where i think it could be even better. 1. The lights could be a bit warmer in the restaurant. 2. However the service and attention was really good, they should offer the wine pairing a bit less times. (We choosed to go without wine pairing and got wine bottle instead) but it was mentioned at least 4 times that we could choose the pairing option. 3. The 3 desserts wasn't necessary in my opinion, the sea buckthorn-honey one was perfect, the lard pastry sith plum was a bit heavy for me in the end, the bonbons were a nice closing. 4. There was a dish mentioned on the menu when we booked what never arrived something with watermelon and tomato, but maybe we it was just an IT issue, and we went when the menu was changed Professional staff, good complete menu, i would recommend it to others.

Beautiful dinner experience. Very inventive dishes. You start the journey on the first floor to have some appetizers and drinks, after which you are taken downstairs to continue the dinner experience. You can see the kitchen from your table, the music is great, the wine selection is excellent, and the staff is super sweet and helpful. Would definitely recommend to go.

Amazing place for fine dining. My partner took a menu of 6 dishes and myself of 8. Only one fish dish was mediocre but the rest was very delicious. Most memorable dish was oxtail goulash with some Asian inspiration. It was a great experience overall with presentation and taste. Local Hungarian wine selection was also good.
