11 Best Vermont Breweries: Where to Drink Craft Beer - AFAR

"A brewery known as much for community engagement and eco-conscious practices as for high-quality beer, with charitable collaborations and green operations. The focus is on IPAs and maple-influenced brews; while one of the most famous IPAs in its family is brewed elsewhere, the taproom carries sought-after versions and rarer double and triple iterations, and the brewery produces unique offerings like a rich maple triple ale. Guests can also stay at an associated Airbnb nearby and take advantage of the surrounding outdoor recreation in the Mad River Valley." - Jessie Beck

Nine Restaurants and Bars in Mad River Valley, Vermont | Eater Montreal

"This brand new brewery, taproom, and retail store draws crowds for its dozen or more fresh brews on tap and comforting beer garden fare. Fluffy pretzels with maple mustard come with beer cheese for dipping. A Vermont cheese plate and charcuterie that was likely produced within a few miles of the taproom are all served in a lofty post-and-beam space with soaring ceilings and plenty of seating both indoors and out. In colder months, cozy up around an outdoor fire pit while sipping a pint of Lawson’s famous Sip of Sunshine IPA." - Heather Platt

This is an amazing place to stop by for a beer and a snack. They have an extensive food list with some healthier options, as well as ice creams made with beer and larger meals. The beer is good too, and Lawson’s has won several awards for their IPAs. I think the lagers are fantastic too, and the flight is an excellent choice. They do not accept tips but if you wish, they will accept a donation to charity at the end of the stay with your bill. It’s a gorgeous taproom and the patio is excellent. A must-stop.

We finally made our first visit to Lawson’s Finest Liquids now that they’re dog friendly—and it was absolutely fantastic! We bring our dogs everywhere, so we were thrilled to see their new dog area. It’s clean, spacious, and a great place for pups to play and socialize. The beer and food were both top-notch. We sampled all of the limited pilot beers and loved every single one—creative, balanced, and brewed with care. The vibe was welcoming, and the staff was great. As we were packing up to head out, a friendly man and his dog stopped to ask how our visit was. Turned out it was Sean Lawson himself! So humble and genuine—it really made our day and left a lasting impression. We can't wait to come back. Huge thank you to Lawson’s for opening the doors to dog lovers like us!

Google
Really nice taproom with indoor or outdoor seating, tables, couches or bar seating. Friendly staff, fast service. Order beers at the bar and take them to your table. Staff picks up empty glasses. They have food too, but we just went for beers. Nice merch too. Variety of t shirts and other clothing as well as plenty of other branded items. Cold four packs to take home too. Again, friendly staff in the gift shop.

Google
Came from Miami, FL to enjoy the brewery as we are doing our own little NE brewery tour. My husband and I enjoy breweries very much and this one was just perfect. The interior space is so welcoming, warm, clean and true to its surroundings. We had 3 great beers: Sip of Sunshine, Double Sunshine and the Fayston to end. All phenomenal. The mezze platter was great. The Cuban Sandwich was better than some in Miami. Wonderful spot.

Google
Lawson's is one of those award-winning breweries with low-key pretensions. Their pints are predominantly IPA, and they know what they're doing with them. If you're anywhere near enough to check this spot out, don't miss it. Hell, if you're far, add this one to your bucket list.

Google
Lawsons is a great new addition to Waitsfield. We went twice during our stay. Once for late afternoon beers and a snack and again for a nightcap. Incredible selection of draft beers. Impossible to be disappointed. We had a table in the sun. On the patio with live music. Very nice. The tap room is also wonderful. Spacious with a bar and plenty of table seating. A must visit if you’re in town. I’m guessing it’s going to be packed during ski season. Back in town and back for more Lawsons! Sat indoor at the fire (they like gas) and had a great time. Love the pretzel and beer mustard.

Google
we came across this amazing pace on our travels and it had to be one of the best brewerys that I have been to so far. we will definitely be going back. the beer was amazing the food was great and the atmosphere was awesome. it's a must stop if you are in the area. even have beer you can take to go.

Madison Roberge

Google
I’ve loved Lawson’s beer for a long time and have heard great things about the atmosphere here. I was unfortunately harassed upon our arrival by the host, due to my having a service dog. She had several extremely invasive questions regarding my health, and claimed it was “in case they needed to call an ambulance.” Although this is a kind thought, the execution was borderline discrimination, and she did not accept it when I told her certain questions were not okay to ask. Never have I felt so violated. Food was okay to mediocre. Great beer and location!

Yelp
Lawsons is one of our all time favorite breweries in the country. The beer and wine are delicious and we bought a few flats of beer to take home. We also ordered the cheese plate this year and all of the cheese was from local farms. Really delicious. Every person who works here is a delight. Based on my understanding they pay each person a liveable wage and they don't work for tips. I adore this. All tips are donated to charity. They also have solar power to run things like the hand dryers in the bathroom. We love the space. If there weren't so many good places to go to in the area we'd love to spend hours here. Will be back next time we are in town!

Yelp
I can take Lawson's Finest Liquids off of my "to try" list at long last. I have been wanting to try beer from this place for quite a while and with time and patience it finally happened and I am super grateful that it did. Steve and I had the Sip of Sunshine IPA which I believe is one of their flagship beers. Flavors to look for with this IPA while this fine liquid is on your tastebuds is hoppiness, tropical, sweet and floral. The body of the beer is very smooth which is very pleasant also for the mouthfeel category. Nice IPA for sure, not super aggressive as some but one to just kick back and relax with.

Yelp
Had great IPA brews here, mine was a Maple flavor with the essence of Vermont maple syrup! We sat outside, had music, great atmosphere! You order at the bar after being seated and receive a buzzer that lets you know when your food is ready. Service was fairly quick. We had the hummus for a starter, my dining partner had the burger and I Had the veggie Ruben sandwich. Go if you want a relaxing time.

Yelp
Very clean taproom. Large space with great outdoor seating. A few fire pits if you get there early. Had an empanada pop up called Paparika. It was excellent. Had the pruna which I would highly recommend. Beer: Hazy Rays IPA. Hoppy, fruity and delicious.

Yelp
A little something for everyone. Beers are always good. Love being able to get different size pours. The food jd good too. Good service too

Yelp
Perfect stop after finishing up a day on the slopes! You are greeted by friendly staff and a giant roaring fireplace. The drink options are always great! My favorite is the option for a 6oz pour over a 16oz! The pricing is fantastic. I do wish they have a larger food menu, but the options provided are good enough for a quick snack while drinking. Has a beautiful wooden interior with very high ceilings and huge windows for both light and a view.

Yelp
The arcades are back!Lawsons really seems to have opened up fully . It was packed when we went during the Christmas holidays . Wait time in the afternoon was around 20-30minutes. Luckily our daughter enjoyed time at the arcade machines which were free. There is also outdoor seating but wouldn't recommend in the cold weather of Vt. The beer list usually have the main core beers - Pilsner, ipas (sip, little sip, etc) but make room for some new beers . I always find the Scrag pils much fresher here than in cans. Also would recommend the Sip of Sunshine and Space between. You do have to go up and order beer and food at a designated counter area. You get your beer on the spot and get a buzzer for when your food is ready to pick up. We like to bring a board game and enjoy some snacks and beer . The service doesn't rush you at all. Great place to come but would recommend when it's not soo busy.

Yelp
Lawson's is a gem. It is a beautiful location with trees, grass, indoor and outdoor seating. Good for groups. Excellent beers! Nice to have a few more choices than just IPA's, although their IPA's are most excellent. You can buy merch and cans to go. Food menu is small, but definitely gets the job done. Kids could play in the grass outside. Service has been nice. We've had to ask for umbrellas every time we have visited and they accommodated. It's a bit of a drive depending on where you are from, but beautiful views and worth it.

Yelp
Exceptional beers in a really cool space. A bit off the beaten path, but well worth the diversion. The interior feels very spacious and open thanks to high ceilings and lots of windows. Everyone was having a great time. I was only there to pick up beer, but the food looked great too so I'll have to stop by again to enjoy a meal. The staff was really helpful, and their beers are some of the best I've ever had. I got some extras to share with friends and they were thrilled.

Yelp
Great beer, great experience! One of the top 3 breweries we've been to. Great food options -- we had the cheese and pickled veggies. All the beers were delicious. We sat at the bar and ordered small pours so got to try lots. We got to meet and chat with Shawn Lawson which was a highlight of our trip to Vermont!
google avatar

Yelp
What a beautiful place inside and out. We had the everything bagel pretzel and caprese salad. Paired with beach party ipa and super lemonova. Delicious!!

Yelp
Swoon. Lawson's Finest Liquids tap room is as charming as ever, the liquids and staff as fine as ever. The menu has been tweaked a bit: There's now beef chili (with just a tiny touch of beef and a not-wimpy touch of jalapeno) on offer, as well as a vegan coconut curry butternut squash soup (phenomenal FYI), and a meatball parm hero. There are still several enjoyable salads made with fresh greens, and the star of the show: the soft pretzel with everything seasoning. It's not a place we'd go to specifically for food; the primary focus remains on the fun, sometimes unusual craft beers on tap, the music, the vibe. The food is better than it has to be, not just there to absorb alcohol so you can get home safely, though it serves that function, too. There's live music on many Tuesdays. We loved listening to the mellow, gentle guitarist, John Drew Petersen, we heard tonight. https://open.spotify.com/artist/1ZkDdmIWsaK0sLMr4kJydq The ceiling probably swallows sound so it may be a tough space to play.

Yelp
Absolutely gorgeous location and super friendly staff. Beers were great, some of the best we've had, and their outdoor patio is great.

Yelp
Vermonters here, visiting for the first time. Ambiance was nice, inside & outside. There were no servers, it's order at the bar & pick up your order when your buzzer goes off. The beer was tasty, clean & refreshing, but the hummus plate was a huge disappointment. Almost sent it back because we were so disappointed. For $11, there was barely a small pile of hummus on the plate, with the tiniest bit of feta & olives sprinkled on top. The bread was called "pita bread", but wasn't even close. Very dense, stale "pita" which wasn't even toasted. What kind of establishment that serves food doesn't know to toast the pita? (Food 101 here.) If it was toasted it likely would have hidden the fact that it was stale. After an appetizer like this, we weren't interested in trying the entrees & just left.

Yelp
Food, ambiance, and service was amazing per usual! The only unsettling feeling I got was from the brunette woman that worked behind the desk at the retail shop. Since it was getting busier we were told to take care of our bill at the retail shop. We had an additional family with us so we kindly asked if we could split the check into two separate checks. The woman responded that she's unfamiliar with the new system "toast" so she wasn't sure if she could do that. Luckily, my sister and I are very familiar with the system and told her we were happy to explain how to do it. (It's very easy, as you click the word split) She seemed offended when we offered help and even responded saying "yeah, I heard you" in a very rude way. I've worked in the service industry for thirteen years and was completely taken back by how she was acting towards us when we were simply trying to help a fellow employee of the service industry. I understand everyone has a bad day here and there, but we were nothing except big smiles and completely polite! Sucks!

Yelp
Place is big, service was quick ! We didn't try the food but the beers we tried are Scrag mountain and phirst light which tasted good for me!
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful brewery! Very nice staff and a super cute location! Had some delicious Oktoberfest beers that did not disappoint! Food was good as well.
google avatar

Yelp
Great brewery with lots of space for family and friends. The beer selection and non alcohol selections are great. The limited munchy menu is good. If your in the area it is definitely worth a visit.
google avatar

Yelp
LOVE this taproom! Sat outside and enjoyed a couple of brews on a beautiful May afternoon. Had a ConnMann Helles Lager which was very good. Also, a McPeak's Nitro Irish Stout which was noteworthy. This place is pristine. There is a gift shop-got a t-shirt. Employees are super friendly. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Jeff K.

Yelp
Great tap room experience, although the food menu is somewhat limited. The service is walk up to the bar and order. They alert you via buzzer when food is ready. The ambiance is big yet homey ski chalet vibe. Plan to visit every time I pass through this area of Vermont
google avatar

Chelsea F.

Yelp
An excellent place to relax, unwind and have some really great beer. The everything bagel pretzel with beer cheese was delicious and didn't try the chili but wish i had room because it sounded excellent. The staff here are always friendly and willing to help. They have a great leader at the top, so it's no wonder they are happy at work!
google avatar

Amy L.

Yelp
As a visitor from Texas, I must say, the hospitality at this place was exceptional. Our hostess, Shari, gave us a detailed rundown on what to expect while giving us a brief tour. She explained the beers and that we would be invited to sample our selection before committing. She also recommended some amazing food choices. We had the chicken and the turkey that were both delicious. We decided to stay longer and moved on to her appetizer recommendations. The hummus was good and local cheese selections were the best we have ever had. This was the best deal with the best service we have had in Vermont.
google avatar

Brett F.

Yelp
Great brewery with great beer. Good place for lunch with their small plates options, like the cheese and meat charcuteries. Lunch may be a better time to go to avoid the crowds. Clean, warm, and inviting. My family would go back many times if we lived there.
google avatar

Caitlin M.

Yelp
Went back to Lawson's this year in the time of Covid. We had to make a reservation two weeks in advance. All the outside seating had fire pits or propane heaters. Great prices for delicious beer. Pretzel was good with mustard and maple butter. I think they're closing the outdoor seating at the end of October unfortunately and are going to curbside only.
google avatar

Joana T.

Yelp
Always lovely, tried their new pineapple draft this weekend, and it was delish. Beef chili and meatball sub were great as well.

Lisa C.

Yelp
Beautiful location with friendly and informative bartenders. Emma was awesome and so helpful. My husband enjoyed all the tastings. Food was tasty and fresh. Lots of open space and a variety of seating available. Great stop.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
The place was hoppin' post ski, which shouldn't have come as a surprise. After a decent wait in line, I ordered the Fayston Maple Imperial Stout and the Maple Nipple. They had just run out of the latter and the keg kicks as they were pouring for me, so they filled my stout a bit higher to make up the difference. Both were delicious, but I loved the Stout. I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Alan G.

Yelp
I will say, the old Lawsons wasn't in a giant ski lodge. It was at a farmer's market... and the Warren Store. This Lawsons has a great tap and to go list, and also has a really good menu of snacks to eat. The old Lawson's run had you getting a sandwich at the Warren Store while you waited for delivery. They both had their charm, but I feel like the beer was better back then. Definitely worth a stop, the BA Fayston was amazing... the Sunshines just aren't anymore.
google avatar

Patricia M.

Yelp
This place was beautiful. The interior has some beautiful wood working in it. It is spacious with a nice bar area and then a table area. You order at the bar for both beer and food. The Maple nipple was excellent. Mellow- not hoppy and had a taste of maple. We ordered the everything bagel with the beer cheese and it was quite tasty. For $12 the cheese platter was disappointing. The pickled vegetables consisted of 4 or 5 pickled string beans. The cheeses were good although I would have appreciated bread instead of or in addition to the lavash cracker. The staff were friendly, helpful and very quick in picking up plates and empty glasses. They have a great outdoor seating area and even some corn hole. The only thing lacking was a couple of umbrellas as it was quite hot so we opted to sit inside. They also have a separate retail area for merchandise and beer. Definitely worth a visit.

Ja K.

Yelp
The spirit consistently under performs with respect to being open to pets as well as being opened to partial p o u r s the beers are actually really good but this venue consistently has the tightest rules and the least good experience of any Brewery I've been to out of over a thousand I would probably rate every Brewery I've been to a 4 and above. Please avoid the venue and just enjoy the beer you can buy in the store
google avatar

Reinne T.

Yelp
This place was quite a surprise, it is a beautiful building with really high ceiling and they even had outdoor chairs with the fire pits even in the snow it was pretty warm. The indoors had benches for seating and was quite busy but we got a table within 10 minutes and the service was pretty good you just go order at the cashier and then there's a pick up window where you get your food. I ordered the butternut squash soup which was the perfect food to have after cross country skiing and platter of cheese to share with friends - the friends ordered a pretzel which looked amazing but was not gluten-free. And the beers I heard were quite amazing - I smelled the maple syrup beer and was in love. They also had a really good kombucha beat lemonade drink which I enjoyed
google avatar

S A.

Yelp
Great place in a great location! The beer was great, as always and the food was good as well. Service was fine and C19 rules were adhered to. Reason for 4.5 stars - my delish soup was too small and I hate the "only at the brewery" beers for sale. Something this good should be sold all the time everywhere
google avatar

Sean M.

Yelp
Hot pretzels and cheese dip, grained mustard were great company for double IPA, for a dark brew Fayston Maple IPA in a huge apres ski crowd. Patio seating with two fire pits.
google avatar

Shelagh A.

Yelp
This place was worth the wait. It's always worth the trip to go to breweries of beers that you truly love (like Lawson's, at least for me) in order to experience the freshest possible batch at the perfect temperature. This way, when you're home, and you are lucky enough to acquire said beer however you acquire it, you can be sure you're doing it right. The food is simple and delicious, and the tap room is large enough to be an all-season destination for the beer lover in VT. Complete with Fooseball table. Just go. And try the Triple! It's so friggin good.
google avatar

Alec M.

Yelp
Beer is great. We had the Scrag mountain pils and the Hamcelot IPA (I think those are the correct names of the beers we had) staff was very helpful and got us some Daimlers to try before committing to a 4 or 12 pack. I will definitely be back and am planning to bring some back to CA. Great place.
google avatar

Sue S.

Yelp
I really wished we had more time to spend at Lawson's. We really liked it and it is totally the type of place where you could easily spend a nice relaxing afternoon sipping beers and hanging out with friends. So first it's a very nice and appealing place that kind of looks like a grand log cabin or lodge with a lot of piney wood and open vaulted ceilings, etc etc. There's a small little shop off to one side where you by beer to go and merch. And there's a big bar and lots of seating both indoor and outdoor (and not too shabby in terms of the view from outside). It was neat, clean and appealing. The bar has a "order here" area, and the staff was super helpful and friendly. No flights here but they will do half-pours, which makes it pretty easy to sample a bunch of stuff. We did not sample any food but it looked really good. I tried the Maple Nipple, which was a super interesting beer. We have had maple beers before, and I would say this one had an extremely good balance of the maple flavor and the "beer" flavor. That said, it wasn't quite up my alley. I did however LOVE the Rooski Black IPA. That is a killer good black IPA and I wished like hell they'd serve it on Nitro. But even without the Nitro, it was creamy and smooth, with super deep flavor even for a black IPA and lovely little chocolate notes. If we'd been staying longer, I would have had about three of those and gotten properly sloshed. My husband who is an IPA freak, had a great time sampling all the different Sips of Sushine. And of course we walked out with a couple cases for later. Great stop. Would absolutely do again.
google avatar

Jacklin A.

Yelp
Pretty tap room with room to hang outside. Friendly and quick service, decent amount of beer options. Retail store stocks most of them but sells out so come early!
google avatar

Justine R.

Yelp
Stopped in for a drink. Beautiful big open concept. High ceilings, uncrossed table setups. The staff was super friendly and the drinks were scrumptious. The cheese plate is a little bit of a let down. We only stayed for a bit but happy we did.
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
Wow. Awesome night to visit Lawson's. A Vermonter told my wife that this is her favorite of all the Vermont breweries so we had to check it out. We sat by the two sided fireplace and enjoyed a couple of beers. It was a super lively atmosphere. They have a bunch of board games you can play and foosball. Really nice retail shop as well. I can't wait to go back and try their Maple Nipple which they were out of this time.
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Beautiful tasting room with lots of parking, outdoor space, video games, and food! Definitely worth the detour off 89. You've likely heard of Little Sip of Sunshine, but come to the brewery to taste the entire family of beers. Try all the maple offerings in the fall. Get a green mountain spent grain pretzel as well. Yum!
google avatar

Autumn S.

Yelp
Beautiful location, great beer, great sandwiches and friendly service. We really enjoyed sitting in the sun and chilling out listening to their great tube
google avatar

Carol A.

Yelp
I had a great time here! It was a Saturday and very crowded but we still somehow found space. I got a meat and cheese plate and also a pickle plate. The employees here were really nice. The pickled vegetables were so good!! Also the beers here were some of my favorites. I liked the Maple Nipple and The Space in Between!
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful place , great food , great beers and friendly service . They thought of everything with this place. I would suggest getting their early as this place fills up. There are plenty of board games and a few video games for the kids and adults alike . Glad to have made the trip you should too !! The

Yelp
All of my wildest beer wishes came true at this brewery. I have followed this brewery for many years, and I used to have to hunt down rare bottles in random shops around VT. They used to be elusive and in gold foil, and they held the most magical hoppy libations. The reason I'm including this detail, is because it is so incredible how far it's come. The new place is just magnificent - the brewery itself, the views outside, the service, the food, the BEER - everything. We visited in mid October, and their setup for dining with COVID was impeccable. They took every single precaution. I also appreciate their "flag" idea for requesting service - if you need service you put a flag up, otherwise you aren't bothered. If the flag was up, service was punctual. This was a really nice way to relax and enjoy the brewery without being hassled. Also, being able to buy cases upon cases of Double Sunshine to bring back home with me was the biggest wish come true. Love Lawsons!!

Yelp
Outside: Country Chalet Inside: Open and Comfortable Food: Nice Taproom Staples Service: Very Good Price: Lunch ~$7/beer & $7/app Lawnson's Finest is a Vermont institution. The beer is incredible and if you haven't had it, go get some right now. If you're in the area and looking for a place to grab a bite and beer, you can't do better! Truly, the above says it all but you'd like more, eh? The atmosphere is at once cozy and open. It feels very much like Vermont. Lots of wood. Wonderful open spaces. The chance to sit and chat with strangers. The food is great. It's light eats indoors though they are doing more now to continue serving patrons in the era of COVID. The pretzels and beer cheese are great. The Full Monty is a great variety. Want something to remember your visit by? Check out the merch in the front. I mean, you're going to get some beers to take with you anyhow, might as well add in a t-shirt or a pullover too. They are colorful and well made. (The accessories I mean. But the beer too.) If you have a chance, try something with maple in it. Cliche? Maybe. But also delicious. You want soemthing to temper your enthusiasm? It can get crowded in here. Maybe go early in the day if you don't like bumping elbows with strangers. Other than that, there is nothing I could possible tell you to be concerned about. Get into Lawson's Finest Liquids at your earliest convenience. Sample everything. Get home safely. Come back again.

Yelp
So, I normally come up to Vt twice a year to visit friends, and it's the first time i've been up and the new (not really new by now) brewery has opened. And wow, this place is really beautiful. Well laid out, good space and seating, and the outdoor area with the fire pits and cornhole is a nice plus as well. In terms of the beer, we all know Sip is good, but if Triple Sunshine or Fayston Maple is available, get it, these two beers are fantastic. 100% worth the stop.

Debbie E.

Yelp
Helpful and friendly. Didn't carry the beer I was looking to get my husband ( apparently is seasonal) but offered lots of suggestions. Would recommend.
google avatar

Matt C.

Yelp
I'm a disabled veteran that came in by myself to have lunch. I'm there is no bar seating, the hostess offered me a high top, or a tiny makeshift bar with high stools only. When I asked to be seated at on of the smaller tables that seat four, she told me I couldn't sit there as a lone diner despite there only being about a dozen people in the large dining room. (There were over 6 tables available and it's 2pm). I walked out and into the retail section to see about buying some beer to go when I overheard the hostess laughing as she lied to her manager about what had happened. Unbelievable.
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
Huge, bright, airy space with well-spaced tables. Extensive menu of their infamous liquids, smaller menu of bar snackies. We had a charcuterie board with a nice selection of meats and cheeses. Order at the counter, get a buzzer, pick up at the window. There's also a lovely boardwalk through the wetlands next to the parking lot, if you feel like you need to walk things off afterward!

Yelp
What a great place to have a drink and relax. We are up visiting for the week and wanted to try some local beers. The reservation online was easy and we were warmly greeted when arriving. Great atmosphere and so nice to sit outside. Great service and solid menu. We had our son with us and they were great accommodating kids and lots of other parents there so its definitely kid friendly. Try the Knockout Blonde. Excellent. And the sriracha dip with the chips was super tasty. I wish this place was open when we came in June in the early COVID days, but highly recommend if you are looking for a place to go, grab a good drink and relax.
