"College Station-based restaurant chain Layne’s Chicken Fingers is aiming to open in Austin sometime in early 2022, but there is no set address as of yet. The menu includes the namesake item — chicken cut up into long sticks that are then marinated and breaded. — along with chicken sandwiches, fried chicken clubs, grilled cheeses, and dips. The Austin franchise location will be run by Noah Kara, who is originally from Houston. After the Austin location opens, he plans on opening two more in the state, including in Corpus Christi." - Nadia Chaudhury

Google
One thing this location always gets right is messing up an order, (only bc of the proximity).. Not to complain on 1 chicken strip, I’m complaining on the price I paid on this “meal”. Usually we’re missing a strip, a straw, sauce, a bag to hold the food, or potato salad. I don’t understand how hard it is to count to 5. Honestly I never thought they handed bags, we’d have to carry these boxes and drinks. I thought it was to save on cost, I guess I’m right… I lost a nug and gained a bag.

Google
Drove through the Wellborn location about 4 and was extremely surprised to see the nuggets that were portrayed as tenders. Pretty sad state of a “tender,” all tenders were this size and this wasn’t the smallest one. As one of the workers that helped open the Wellborn location while at TAMU, this left me leaving BCS not wanting to try Layne’s again

Google
A college station classic spot. Not my first choice, but a good spot if you want some more bang for your buck compared to Cane’s. Definitely more greasy, but also more tender and also larger, at least from a consistency standpoint. The bread is no Texas toast but it pairs well and the fries are great. Definitely sucks that the sauce costs extra because it is really good. Gets pretty busy, but I’ve never had a problem getting my order correct and relatively fast. Some seating inside. Overall a good spot, especially if the line at Cane’s is too long.

Google
First time back in College Station, and I come to find out Laynes has sold out and gone corporate. Price has changed, and quality of the food is so much worse. No more potato salad with any meals, you have to separately buy it. They gave me 10 fries with the 5 finger meal. Sauce doesn’t taste the same. Bread was soggy, like it had been microwaved. Tenders were alright, but far less meat. Fries tasted straight out of a frozen bag from Walmart. Disappointed. I’ll just go to Canes for better quantity and quality.

Google
Third time coming here with my family! And we were not disappointed! Everyone was super nice. This round was a drive-thru app order and it was fast and easy! Hot and fresh. Thank you!

Michelle Ramirez

Google
Love Laynes we ordered two, five pieces meals. Never had any problems. I don’t mind paying the new prices. But, tonight they literally gave us 8 fries in each box!

Veronica Herrera

Google
I hadn’t eaten at a Layne’s in over 15 years and was pretty excited about it. Ordered through drive thru. I was traveling and didn’t realize that the size drink that I ordered wasn’t very big I mentioned it and the young lady at the window didn’t offer to exchange it for a bigger size. Anyway I just paid for another drink. Also they shouldn’t have boxed up the spicy tenders they were over fried.

Google
Yummy food. Great quality for the price.

Yelp
This place is great!! It was my Dad's favorite spot in college, so we stopped by on our recent trip. The chicken was crispy and the sauce was delicious. It's sad that there's a Cane's so close by, because this place is far and away better. If you're craving chicken tenders this is the place to go!

Danielle V.

Yelp
Laynes, more likes Lames. The tenders were actually chicken nuggets and then they want you to tip through the drive thru. get over yourself you're the knock off version of canes

Sharon B.

Yelp
My family and I recently moved here. This is our second time eating at this location. And they did not disappoint. We ordered the Family Meal. Omg! It came out quickly. They apologized for the wait. Um... what wait? Baby. We were laughing and talking. We didn't notice. (Drive-thru has a wall of stickers that you can either add to or gaze at.) We enjoy our conversation about them. Our food was delicious and hot -each trip. The customer service was great! Thank y'all! We shall return!

Luke H.

Yelp
great food, great atmosphere and service. Quick drive through. Way better than canes and way cheaper

Devin S.

Yelp
If you're craving chicken tenders, this is the go-to spot with a focus solely on them! You have the choice between the chicken tender basket or the chicken tender plate. While the tenders are satisfactorily crispy and substantial, they could benefit from a boost in seasoning. The cleanliness of the tables and floors left something to be desired; they appeared overdue for a thorough cleaning, prompting us and other customers to tidy up ourselves. The menu, featuring Chicken Fingers, Fries, Potato Salad, and Texas Toast, seems reminiscent of a more popular establishment, despite this restaurant being the original. However, it does offer some unique items such as spicy tenders and a grilled chicken sandwich, which may be undiscovered gems for many and myself to try. Layne's falls somewhat short due to its lack of distinctiveness. One aspect worth noting is the consistently good customer service, although the cleanliness issue detracts from the overall experience, especially for dine-in customers. Thus, I'd recommend opting for the drive-through if you decide to visit. Personally, I'd give Layne's another chance, ensuring I choose fresh options and utilizing the drive-through to explore their yet-to-be-tasted offerings

Astrid G.

Yelp
Layne's is better than Canes. Layne's is very straightforward. Atm 8.50 a box tax included. You get chicken fingers, crinkle cut fries, a slice of Texas toast, and potato salad. The Layne's sauce is tangy and extra peppery. The breading on the chicken is very crispy. The chicken does not need sauce due to it being well seasoned. I'm not a fan of the potato salad- that being said, it is American style salad like the kind you buy at the store in a tub. The food was pipping hot and fresh. I would pick it over canes any day. The portion is massive, good enough for 2 people that have average appetites.

Asma-Maria E.

Yelp
Fries are too die for! I don't know if it's because I ordered the spicy chicken tenders but I feel like the size has shrank since I last ordered. The toast at Canes is better because it's Texas toast (with glaze and all that) and not just a slice of toast.

Caleb R.

Yelp
I love this place but how y'all going to give me a piece of chicken that looks this bad.

Denise M.

Yelp
Layne's chicken fingers are always fresh and crispy and the sauce is Awesome!!! Service is always friendly and fast. The restaurant is always clean, comfortable and you can not beat the smell of fried chicken.

Melissa P.

Yelp
Food was great as usual, but what was absolutely horrible was the service. One employee was taking orders at the counter and after she finished taking a phone order, she walked out off and went to a side room and didn't say a word to me or the other customer waiting in line to order. The girl running the window eventually walked up to the counter and just stood there. Didn't say how can I help you. Nothing. Finally she asked if we had been helped. Didn't make eye contact, did not speak up. I finally ordered and I asked for sweet tea. She tells me that they were out and not 5 minutes later, she gives another customer sweet tea. I don't know who is managing this place anymore, but you've got to get people who have better customer service skills. I have been coming here for over 20 years and never had an experience like the one I have had today.

Steven G.

Yelp
Ok, bare with me here. If I want chicken, I would come to laynes over Chick-fil-A , or Popeyes, and those are my go to. The spicy strips slap. The crinkle cut fries are seasoned and crispy. The prices...fuggheta bout it!

Fox E.

Yelp
You could go to Raising Cane's instead... or you could just stay in your Layne's, bro. This is the little local version of Raising Cane's for this area. We appreciate it and we're glad that there is a nice alternative to the chain chicken. Having said that, the other location has absolutely nightmare service to the extent where I gave them one star and they deserve less. Treated us like dirt. And as for this location the service wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. The chicken on the other hand was juicy and hot and tender and delicious. I mean they're called tenders so I guess tender goes with the tenderitory? We were pretty happy with it altogether. However they close dine in a little early and that's why I'm knocking a star off when otherwise it would have been a five-star meal. And dirt cheap too, although if you've been to Lowe's lately you know dirt isn't as cheap as advertised.

Carson J.

Yelp
5 Finger meal was absolutely fire!! Alejandro P., Austin S., and Alejandro C. helped me pick out what to get and gave a few good laughs. The food was hot, came out fast, and was hella good!!

Allison R.

Yelp
Great chicken! Everything is good, but their chicken beats Raising Canes. You can tell that the chicken is fresh. For 6 tenders, fries, toast, and coleslaw(I sub for another sauce) the whole box is $6.50 with tax. If you want 3 tenders, toast and fries and one sauce, get the half box for $4.50. The service is great and the employees are always so friendly! The drive through is usually pretty fast. Update: Don't go on really busy days, like move in days and family weekends because their quality drops significantly when their demand goes up. My chicken wasn't seasoned and cooked as well as usual, so my chicken was soggy in spots. I really am partial to the Wellborn location, because of the employees. I had a coupon for a free box so I went on a Wednesday night to the drive thru. The line was long and slow so I put my car in park when I was at the first window. Unfortunately, my car would not come out of park. 3 of the employees tried to fix my car, and were googling and calling around to see what was wrong. It took my insurance forever to find a tow, and I was stuck in the drive thru, blocking the entire drive thru. Never was an employee rude, only encouraging. After an hour they offered me a free drink. When I was finally towed 2 hours later the employees cheered from the window. In a terrible situation the employees made my situation bearable.

Jasmine S.

Yelp
I was a little worried about this place because there was a long line in the drive thru, but I was pleasantly surprised by how fast it moved. I enjoyed my meal. I am not a big fan of their sauce since it's super peppery but it's still good nonetheless. Honestly can't go wrong here for the price.

Manda C.

Yelp
I was in the area visiting my family and it can be challenging to find something everyone can agree on. We had six adults and two children and went through a long lists of vetoes. When we finally settled on chicken, it came down to this place and Raising Cane's. I had never tried a Layne's before, so of course I was curious. However, the reason they won out was because I made some calls and they were cheaper for a party pack by a significant amount of money. They have 20 tenders for $15 and that's a pretty good deal!! I placed an order for the 20 tenders, 5 fries, 3 potato salads, 7 pieces of toast and a chicken sandwich. I found $33 to be a very reasonable price for that amount food. My only suggestion would be if they had family packs on their sides. I did ask about this, but was basically told there is an individual size or a gallon bucket, nothing in between like a large or family size. Considering that you can get a deal like this at a Golden Chick or a KFC, I think it would be smart for them to consider. Regardless, we ended up with enough food, I just think that would make them more appealing for large groups. The biggest reason why they are getting 3 stars instead of 4 is because their service was unimpressive. While placing my order, the girl on the phone just started talking to someone else in mid sentence without explanation or asking me to hold. When she started talking to me again, it was abruptly, also without explanation or apology. She asked when we were coming, I asked her how long it might take and she said 5 minutes. I kind of laughed and said we would be there in 15 and asked if that would work for them, to which she said yes. However, when my sister arrived just after 15 minutes later and the girl told the kitchen crew she was there, they started mocking the fact that she had to wait. Really poor customer service. Now this was a late Sunday afternoon, somewhere around 4pm. This may not be the norm for service, but it is what happened on that day. It would seem that whoever staffed their entire location with college kids, neglected to provide any real customer service training or expectations. Hopefully, they correct that problem so their other customers have a better experience. Overall, the food was pretty good! The chicken was tasty, though a little greasy. The pieces were small and short, but fairly thick. My dad mentioned they used to be bigger pieces. I did like their marinade though, and even if the pieces were a little small, the price to portion was fair and filled up everyone. The sides are really cheap! I think the potato salad was 75 cents per serving. We were all in agreement that the potato salad wasn't anything special, but it was decent and a good price. The fries were okay. I like crinkle cut fries, they could have been crisper and had a little more seasoning. The toast on the other hand was really good! Even the crust was super flavorful! If you try this place out, you can't go wrong with the tenders and toast. Just be prepared for some meh service.

Emily K.

Yelp
A great spot for chicken in College Station, TX. I usually order the 4 finger meal to go, which comes with 4 chicken fingers, sauce, French fries, toast, and a drink. I was originally confused on how this place differed from Raising Cane's. From what I can tell, the key differences are the bread and sauce. Layne's serves bread more similar to toast you might make at home, and their sauce has pepper in it. I found both the chicken fingers and French fries to be similar in quality. As a big fan of Raising Cane's (& chicken fingers in general), I found this to be a great option for takeout in College Station. I would highly recommend giving it a try!

Shane W.

Yelp
I took my daughter to the drive through at this place. I've only heard good things about Layne's. It was a horrible experience. The girl taking our order actually said "anything else" after everything we ordered. It was like a bad meme. It was so hard to order. I will never go to Layne's again. The food also sucked. There was nothing redeeming about this place.

Jason Z.

Yelp
Good no frills tenders for college kids. Cheaper than canes and about the same flavor

Janet A.

Yelp
Best dang chicken tenders in Bryan/College Station, hands down! The staff is courteous while taking your order. The tenders are always hot and freshly prepared, and the signature sauce is sooo good!

Tommy L.

Yelp
Kid that took our order was very rude. No hello at the speaker or window. Never gave a total when ordering food. Didn't get a name but looked like a college kid, not Hispanic but the guy was brown. Wouldn't go back again

Cheyenne H.

Yelp
Layne's doesn't offer a huge menu, but their chicken is worth a try. Layne's menu only consists of fried chicken tenders, french fries, potato salad, and toast. That's it. Prices are reasonable, but the lack of options make it a one time stop. Their chicken and fries are decent, so if you're really craving some chicken tenders then I'd give Layne's a try. They also have a drive through which is super convenient. However, their "special sauce" is nothing special. It literally tasted like a black pepper vinaigrette, and it was super overwhelming. I'd recommend bbq sauce instead.

Molly G.

Yelp
Layne's has always been my preference over Cane's, and I always got the best chicken fingers here....except for last night. I was surprised to see the serving size went from 4 fingers to 5, and I was wondering how 5 would even fit in the box? WELLLL, they were all HALF the size of the former fingers, like split right down the middle, and 2 of them were "fingernails". I had added a $2 tip on the receipt, and I was a little upset that I even did that. This morning I checked my bank balance, and the debit for Layne's was $7.25 and did not include the tip...which proves the cashier was not paying attention, so GOOD! I'm really sad that the finger box went from $6.00 to $7.25, and then the BIG ol' fingers went to baby fingers and fingernails. BUMMER! I'm debating ever going back now.... :~(

Madelyn D.

Yelp
The only complaint I have about this place is that the chicken had a good amount of gristle. However, the sauce rocks and the bread is AMAZING. Super small menu, but I think that's kind of the point.

Joseph R.

Yelp
they have increased their prices are decreased their portion sizes. a chicken finger box used to be $7, now it is $10 and much less fries. overall value has gone down. i hope management does something to change this. i would rather support the local businesses but changes like this make it harder

Vanessa R.

Yelp
Service was ass. They kicked us 30 minutes early. Everyone who was working was very rude. The food was okay. Nothing special. I wouldn't even waste your time coming her. Bad experience.

Jessica C.

Yelp
Ehhh it's pretty basic chicken. Probably on par for college kid food. They have four things on the menu: chicken fingers potato salad fries chicken finger sandwich Food was okay... kinda bland and not very memorable. Best thing was their sauce they charge extra for. Service was great and everyone was friendly.

Mrmrmej J.

Yelp
My guess would be that this is a local hotspot. The food was good. And the prices are very reasonable.

Meghann P.

Yelp
Great staff and consistently great food! The sauce is boss and I can see why so many locals rave about it!

Cassandra M.

Yelp
Va va value. You get a lot of chicken fingers, fries, toast, and a potential substitute for an easy price. It's a heavy meal and I usually can't finish it but it's a very filling, well seasoned meal for a game day or between studying for 2 exams the next day. I am a hype girl for how they season their chicken, sauce, and fries!!! The chicken is strong alone, not needing additional condiments. That's my indicator of lovely chicken tender. Tastes good next day too when warmed up. I miss Layne's :) I reminisce of the good days

Vivian F.

Yelp
Quality is simply OKAY. Something to try if you've never had it before and are in the College Station area. Apparently it's only available in College Station. Chicken is bland unless you dip it in the sauce. Sauce tastes like Cane's, but more pepper-y. Toast is delicious though - could eat that all day.

Phil S.

Yelp
Delicious, reliable, inexpensive...did I say delicious? Layne's over Cane's any day of the week.

Kerra S.

Yelp
Best chicken in cstat hands down! Full chicken meal , fries , potato salad, and a drink for 6.50?!? Gotta love it !

Vanessa L.

Yelp
I'm gonna start off by saying.... Layne's is better than Canes. The sauce is great, the chicken is great, the potato salad is great, and the toast is great... what more can you ask for? AND it's only $6.50 vs. at least $2 more at Canes. Huge fan of Layne's and I'm sad that they don't have one in other cities.

Claudia C.

Yelp
This Layne's sucks, as much as I hate to say that as an Aggie. Every time I get drive thru, it takes forever, my tenders are too brown/overdone (too hot of oil) or the drive thru workers are incompetent. They can't do simple math when I hand them an extra quarter so I get even change??

Jasmine M.

Yelp
This was our first time here. We heard about it from a friend. They don't have many options on their menu but it took too long to get our food. We waited for 12 minutes in the drive thru just to pay to wait another 5 minutes to the 2nd window to get our food. The chicken tenders were very fresh and the sauce was tasty. I would go back.

Jennifer M.

Yelp
What is in that delicious sauce?! Drove through here with a bus full of middle schoolers on a field trip to Texas State. The establishment really worked with us and all of our requirements for school. The food was all hot and ready to go when we got there. I will be back next time I'm in town.

Vicky N.

Yelp
As much as I love raising cane's, I love layne's more. The only things I love about college station are layne's and my brother. (I went to UT Austin if that gives you some context.) My brother said people who started cane's used to work at layne's, which makes total sense. Idk if it's true, but I've said for years that layne's is better bc cane's ripped them off. Idk what's different about layne's sauce that makes it so much better than cane's sauce imo, but idc. IT's great. Chicken is always super hot and I love crinkle cut fries. To me, much like how you have to (or should, if you don't) stop at czech stop otw to or from dallas, you should eat at layne's before leaving college station.

Jason M.

Yelp
Had heard this was comparable to canes chicken and decided to try yesterday at 9 pm. I was four cars deep in the drive thru line. 22 minutes to arrive at the first window. I ordered at the drive thru speaker and then arrived at the first window and ordered again to a distracted employee and laughing and ignoring me and apologizing instead of just doing her job. Finally completed order and she gave me the wrong amount.....I corrected her and paid. I was then told to go to the second window. Inside the window of the second window was an overflowing trash can and the supply room. After another 6 minute wait The same employee walked over and handed me an open box of food with no bag, ketchup, extra toast, drink that I ordered or napkins. As I was waiting for her to return w the remaining items she came and tried to give me someone else's large order and kept saying no this is yours. Weird. She finally brought the drink and I again had to ask for the toast which finally arrived. All this to eat overcooked chicken and still no ketchup. The sauce was amazing and everything else was a disaster.

Andrew J H.

Yelp
Not as good as canes. Toast is soggy. It was more expensive than it was worth. Chicken was not good at all. Gave it a couple of chances but always left dissatisfied.

Brian P.

Yelp
Move over Cane's, Layne's is here! Basically a hole in the wall local college town chicken finger joint serving delicious food at dirt cheap pricing. The menu is simple: decide if you want a chicken finger plate with fries, toast, sauce and potato salad or a sandwich or just fingers by themselves. We all opted for plates so we could try everything, and it didn't hurt that they were only $5.08 each. We also got a gallon of sweet tea to share. The chicken was crispy and fresh, and almost as good as Cane's. But you get 5 fingers and all the trimmings for 5 bucks, which makes Layne's way better. The toast was so good and I really liked the salty taste to it in addition to the butter. The sauce was good, similar to Cane's and perhaps even better. The potato salad was also good but we were all full by the time we got to it. The only thing I didn't really like were the fries because they were a little too dry for my taste. The sweet tea was perfect and an awesome value for 3 or 4 bucks! Will definitely be back here next time I visit my bro on campus! Gig 'em!

Andrew C.

Yelp
Fresh fried chicken fingers. It's good for Aggietown - pretty fast food. Interesting random doodle drawings from other patrons. Sauce is not too bad. It's good.

Josh A.

Yelp
For me and many of my Aggie friends, a Sunday lunch at Layne's is the number one thing we miss most about living in College Station.

Madiha A.

Yelp
I remember Layne's being better but sadly what I got today was not appetizing. My chicken as more soggy and oily than crispy. The sauce was also excessively peppery... and I love pepper they just dumped waaay to much in there. The sauce is the best part but mine was inedible :/

OJ S.

Yelp
My goodness, they only have four or five things on the menu, why does it take 30 minutes to get from where you place your order to actually getting your food? I ordered two chicken finger boxes, and a sandwich. And it has taken me 35 minutes to get my order. All day long the only reason people are coming here are for the chicken fingers, so they should be producing chicken fingers at a high volume, so that you don't have to wait. Your order would still be fresh, it would still be hot, if they were cooking continuously. I don't understand it......

Sara T.

Yelp
I used to choose Layne's over Cane's any day, but unfortunately I don't think I'll return. I think these are the best fries in BCS, but the chicken tenders are just a no go. I checked and 3/5 of my tenders all had bones (didn't even check the other two, just tossed them). I'm hoping it was just a fluke, but be wary and careful.

Mateus M.

Yelp
Food is cheap and actually slaps pretty hard but my lord...their service is next to just going into the kitchen and cooking it myself.

Saba S.

Yelp
I'm not a huge fan of the food but the rest of the group loves it! The chicken fingers are moist with a crispy coating and the sauce is their secret recipe. If you like the American style country fried chicken then this is definitely a quick stop to try!

Hannah H.

Yelp
Just finished my chicken basket and I am stuffed! For $5 you get five perfect tenders, awesome mustard potato salad, toast, crinkle- cut french fries and Layne's secret sauce. If you aren't that hungry get the sandwich. It comes with two pieces of toast, three tenders, and extra sauce even though there is some already on the sandwich. It was cheaper for $2-something. You can add potato salad for an extra .69 cents. All of it is extremely filling and much better than its competitor, Canes. There are negative reviews about the staff and I have never had a problem. In fact, on my first visit I wore a Houston Texans t-shirt and the guy at the counter gave me my meal for free! If you're starving and not worried about the calories, Layne's is an awesome, local and affordable place to get lunch!
