Manchamanteles, Chef Geno Bahena’s New Mexican restaurant, Opens in Bucktown | Eater Chicago

"The longtime 24‑hour taco institution that previously occupied the space was Lazo’s Tacos, a popular late‑night spot often conflated with fellow nocturnal bastion Arturo’s; it briefly gave way to another location of Las Fuentes and had its parking lot converted to patio space before the new restaurant moved in." - Naomi Waxman

Stopped in for lunch while I was serving jury duty at the courthouse. It was really good and quick service! Your get chips and salsa as a little appetizer and I ordered the Birria tacos as my meal. The meat was really good and sauced up. I liked that they doubled up the tortillas and they had a crunch to it on some parts still.

Google
These tacos are outstanding. Everything is delicious, including the pico de gallo, steak tacos, homemade tortilla chips. You can’t go wrong! And I understand we didn’t even own the most popular dish - the barria!

Dan H.

Google
Visiting from SoCal, I was skeptical about a taco place in the Midwest but WOW! This place is legit and has the best homemade chips & salsa I've ever had. I had the tostadas - the carne asada was decent but the chicken was loaded with flavor.

Google
Their birria taco was the best and I STRONGLY recommend shrimp tacos too!!! Very very impressive!!! First time when I went there, I ate the shrimp taco so I couldn’t upload the photo. This time, I remembered! Every time I come here, I forget to take pictures because I just gobble it up! We drive over an hour to come here! Good quality meat, good portion, good service! Thank you, Martha!!!

Google
Birria tacos were amazing! The corn, beans and rice were also delicious. I'm not from here but this will my go to every time I come to MKE.

Google
This was such a great place to eat! My mom and I shared the shredded pork enchiladas, and they were absolutely delicious! Great service, too! Can't recommend this restaurant enough.

Google
Had the birra tacos with consumé, consumé could use a lot more flavor but the tacos were delicious. Could use a lot better customer service though. When we arrive, there was a sign at the door, saying, please wait to be seated and one of the three workers sitting at a table stood up to tell us we could take a seat anywhere. We only got checked on once and it wasn’t until half an hour into our meal mind you we were the only ones there at this point. There never once was someone standing behind the counter besides when a worker was back there to get hot sauce for her food which finally gave me a chance to get up and ask for hot sauce myself as i didn’t want to disturb the three workers who were just sitting at the table eating and chatting before we got there until idk how long after we left. They got up more to serve themselves than they did to serve us. We also had to get up to ask for boxes and our bill. The ladies were all very nice but for an almost $100 bill the service made it almost not worth it at all.

Google
Food was delicious! I am from Deep South Texas (Edinburg) this food made me miss home! We had the carne guisada, I plate is enough for two! So good! The chips are warm and the pico de gallo is perfect!

Yelp

Yelp
We stopped here on our way thru town, and I'm so glad we did! The staff is friendly and welcoming, with the owner checking on us early in the meal. The food is FRESH and incredibly reasonable. If you don't get the birria tacos, what are you even doing?! The chips are delicious and the pico had my husband using a spoon to get every drop. We also ordered the chimichanga cheesecake...delicious like your favorite Fair food. The spicy strawberry margarita was also a treat Fresh jalapenos gave it perfect heat to balance the strawberry sweetness. The place is adorable as well. If I lived in Milwaukee I'd visit all the time!

Yelp
Menu: **** Service: ***** Ambiance: **** Value: ***** 4.5 stars if possible. First visit here, stopped in for lunch. Not real busy and we were seated immediately. Nice menu with plenty of options ala carte or full meals, small bar at the back of the restaurant, limited seating so be prepared if it is a nice day and time of day I would assume. They came with chips and salsa that had a bit of a kick. Price was very reasonable. The combo dinner included taco, tostada and enchilada (steak, ground beef or chicken) I got steak. Only disappointment was you could only get one choice of beef for all three. Rice and refried beans with the dinner plate. Price, $13.99 very reasonable for downtown. We did not try their margs, but they looked good. Overall, very good and we would come back for sure. Worth the try and visit.

Yelp
First time coming here. We were very excited to come here based on high reviews however we were extremely disappointed! To start off as we entered there is a sign that says please wait to be seated.. the restaurant was not busy at all.. and we were ignored. After standing awkwardly for a few minutes we decided to seat ourselves. After we sat no one came to us and we were about to leave. However, at last one of the waiters came to ask if we were helped yet.. so we waited again. Another server came with chips and salsa and finally our waitress came around.. so far two people came no actual waitress.. Now let's talk about the food. I ordered the tinga tacos and shrimp with a side of rice and beans. My rice and beans we're forgotten i had to ask for them again..... The tacos were disgusting.. just awful! Extremely Wet, soggy and falling apart and extremely salty. The shrimp tacos had two shrimps and it fell apart anyways. The rice and beans were good so that was my dinner unfortunately. My bf had the birria tacos. Very salty and greasy. On top of the awful experience so far all the young waiters and waitresses were sitting in the back table just hanging out. No care in the world here. Awful service. This place is not being ran well at all. Unfortunately we will never come back.

Yelp
The atmosphere was very nice. Love the decor. We immediately got serviced. The food was good. They do give you a lot of meat in your tacos.

Yelp
Our friends brought us here and food and drinks were awesome! Staff was nice and food came quickly - it wasn't very busy. It has a casual feel with rustic/Mexican decor.

Yelp
On October 23, 2025, I stopped by to grab some lunch during the busy lunch hour. There was a large table with other people sitting there, so I sat at the bar. Without any acknowledgment or greeting, I saw how busy it was. I knew there would be a wait, so I sat there, waiting to be acknowledged or served. All of the staff kept walking past me without making eye contact or letting me know it would be a moment. After 10-12 minutes of sitting with no acknowledgment or anything, I left. This is Customer Service 101. I'm not one of those patrons who doesn't understand busy times, but it's simple to acknowledge someone walking in and let them know it might take a moment. It's clearly busy, but the lack of any acknowledgment after all that time is unacceptable. This place will never get my business. To make things worse, the establishment was full of white patrons who were served, while I, a single Black woman, was ignored. One can't help but wonder what's really going on. I couldn't even get the courtesy or customer service I expected. It's just ridiculous. I wish I could give negative stars.

Yelp
Saw the raving reviews for this place for their birria. I'm not a big fan of it and love carne asada tacos. Got that and pastor taco plate. The tacos were overall a 3.75/5 I've had better food trucks in mke but the star of the show was the free chips and salsa. The salsa was the best salsa I've ever had in my life. I am not joking. I will go back for that salsa. It was so fresh and so flavorful. Chips were not the basic ones at Mexican chains either. 10/10 chips and salsa. It was almost more of a pico. But sooooo good.

Yelp
Visited Lazo's Taco Shack the other night before a hockey game. My son had beef tacos and I had birra enchiladas with green sauce. The food was hot, fresh, and tasty. The restaurant is simply decorated and appears clean. I felt like the servers could use some additional training. I could barely hear our server when she was standing next to me. The service was just a little off. The food definitely made it worth the visit. Pretty sure we'll be back.

Yelp
1st time here. Seat yourself. (Realized when leaving it wasn't a seat yourself but no-one acknowledged us when we walked in) Took waitress 10 min to acknowledge me and bring silverware(no water), she stated she is making a drink for someone and will come take drink order, mind you the guy who went to bar came after we sat. But makes sense because we sat ourself smh She finally helps and seems not pleasant but not rude... like she doesn't like we sat our self lol again only reason we did is because no one acknowledged us We ordered a 1/2 pitcher margarita $16 ( happy hour) and what we thought 2.25 tacos which we got steak (carne asada) so was extra no problem because they were good. Added sour cream and that added 1.50 to bill. We also got chips complimentary with salsa that was veryyyy good. Overall the food is good would go again and NOT sit myself. I noticed alit of perhaps regulars, but I feel regardless you should make everyone feel welcome, and this visit not so much. But I always give 2nd chances and I think food is worth it.

Delmus M.

Yelp
Decent food, disappointing service. The walk over was great, and the building looked new, but the vibe changed quickly. A snarky sign on the door felt unnecessary, and once inside, the staff seemed uninterested--four employees sitting around, one pointed us to a table without a proper greeting. As someone who works in customer-facing roles, it was disappointing to see phones out, McDonald's on the table, and a lack of attentiveness. We even had to ask for the bill ourselves. Food was actually solid (I'd give it a 7.4), but overall experience? A 5.4. The only bad taste left in my mouth came from the service unfortunate, because the tacos were good. Milwaukee has plenty of great options, so I likely won't return to this one.

Yelp
Being my first Milwaukee layover in a few years I was eager to try Lazo's because of everyone raving about the birria tacos. I will say this, the moment I took a bite of the chips and salsa, I knew the food would be good. A good chips and salsa is a strong indication anywhere of things to come. The birria tacos did not disappoint. The meat was tender, juicy and had soul in it and paired with the consommé it was phenomenal. All in all the food hit the spot. Service was also excellent and the server with the glasses was very attentive. I look forward to coming back on my next Milwaukee layover!

Yelp
Starting with the good: the Birria was one of the best we've ever had. If you're going to have anything here, this should be it. The Tostado we had was also on point. Constructed beautifully and delicious. The Taco was fine. No complaints but no wow factor either. You can't order an Enchilada ala carte but you are able to get a single one as a part of a dinner plate (one taco, one tostada, one enchilada). I don't know that seems weird but okay. The enchilada itself was just okay. It had a thicker sauce, wasn't very warm and had a cold spot in the center which really bummed me out. While the chimichanga had good flavor--it's so big that the bites you take become unbalanced. Instead of the perfect bite of a little shell, meat, and cheese, you often end up with one or the other. We'd rather have a couple smaller chimi's. The rice and beans were cold and had no flavor at all. While I understand sides are prepared in a larger portion ahead of time for quick turnaround--that should never happen. I don't know if it was an off day for them but we left thinking exactly what I opened with: if you're going to get anything here, get the Birria.

Yelp
Had the briars tacos, they were delicious. As you can see on the photo I ate half before I realized I needed a photo.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch and was very pleased. Lazo's was fairly empty at lunch, but I had seen enough of the Birria taco pictures in my feed to know to order just that! Immediately after I sat down, a party of thirteen walked in. Sacre bleu- take my order quickly! The party of thirteen during normal lunch hours did gum up the service a bit. I LOL'd when one of them said "we're on a bit of a time crunch." But the birria tacos and consomme were great! The dining area is nicely decorated. In December it might be essential to get one of those temporary outdoor wind blockers for the door that leads directly in, as it was mildly freezing indoors from carryout traffic going in and out. I can't believe Lazo's has been open in this location for three years - I guess I'm not often hungry in this immediate area, but I'll be back.

Mike B.

Yelp
Stopped in for dinner after reading an article in the Milwaukee Journal. We were greeted at the door immediately by Anna. She took our drink order (they have Pacifico beer, yea) and brought out really great chips. My husband had the Ground Beef taco plate and I had the Birria Tacos. They were awesome. Best tacos ever!! We got to meet Jose the owner. He told us about opening during Covid, but he made it through. It's a great gem of a place, the service is great, thank you Anna, the food is delicious and it has a really welcoming atmosphere. We will be back.

Yelp
First time I was ever in Wisconsin went with a buddy for a concert. We were hungry we decided tacos tried the spot and it was amazing! The owner was very nice welcomed us in like if we were part of the family so did the waiters they were awesome it was great first wisconsin experience. The place was also pretty very authentic look! If you're reading this thank you guys

Yelp
Omg, was visiting Milwaukee, already known for its family owned restaurants, and stopped in this wonderful, hidden gem. The birria tacos, which were soooo amazing. Also tried the el pastor and carne asada tacos ( it was taco Tuesday) the horchata was really good too. You have to try this place out. The staff was friendly and the owner, sat and spoke us. A real family feeling serving real family food.

Todd G.

Yelp
Great food, great service. Good bar for eating alone if you need to. Ambiance is good, place is clean, not too crowded.

Yelp
ICYMI: It's Latinx Heritage Month (9/15-10/15) so go support an awesome Latinx-owned business like this one! I ordered lunch for delivery on Friday, and oh my goodness was it an extremely tasty meal. I've actually never eaten inside this restaurant, but have always had good takeout experiences. They use EatStreet as a third party delivery service, which was not only easy and convenient, but the food arrive quick and still pipping hot. Somehow I've lived my whole life without trying Birria tacos, and Lazo's was a wonderful first experience. I received four shredded beef tacos, in which the the corn tortillas were pan-fried and crispy. Like nothing I've ever had before. They were stuffed with a very generous amount of meat, melty cheese, onion and cilantro. The tacos alone had amazing flavor, but on the side came consomè to dip these bad boys in and it added even more good taste to each bite. Consomé is the liquid the birria meat cooks and ends up being soup-like with added ingredients like tomato, chiles, garlic and more. 10/10 birria tacos, definitely recommend!

Kenji C.

Yelp
Great service and food. We came in late, and they were still willing to serve us. The Birria and Fajetas were amazing and would recommend this place to anyone. The place itself too is lively and great. 10/10 would come again.

Yelp
Had the house special = taco w/ gravy = fair. Service was great. Spotted cow beer was great to wash down the tacos. Setting is clean + simple.
google avatar

Kelsey H.

Yelp
food, drinks and service were all wonderful! Came in for lunch and it was busy, but bartender was attentive and kind. The chips and pico were delicious while I waited for my signature margarita which was the perfect amount of spicy with the added jalapeños without being too overwhelming. I also had the combo plate with a taco, enchilada and tostada. I thought all were flavorful and tasty. We will definitely be back

Brandon D.

Yelp
Use to eat them a lot for lunch! My delivery was always hot and fresh! Service met all of my order details! I never had a chance to stop in as of yet !
google avatar

Sam T.

Yelp
These are hands down the BEST, most flavorful birria tacos in Milwaukee! The owner also literally walks around and speaks to every person who comes into the restaurant. The customer service is great. I do admit I was shocked at first that the tacos didn't come with rice and beans but let me tell you I couldn't even finish my tacos- they're so filling. They're even good reheated. The drink could have been stronger but it was delicious. I will DEFINITELY be back!!
google avatar

Samuel W.

Yelp
The Birria Tacos - bussin! The to-go box was filled with four super delicious beef Birria tacos, cheese, onion, cilantro, lime, and comsomè. Next level tacos. The owner is gracious, humble, and is all about the flavor and customer service. Did I say the food was killah? They were sold out on previous visit but they they were ready!

Yelp
I really loved this restaurant we were greeted by a gentleman that was I believe the manager or owner super friendly guy. He even told us of a place right next door to his place that had Comedy shows and Karaoke nights The food and drinks were super good, I had the Combination Dinner plate which included one Chicken Taco, Enchilada, with rice and beans. My wife had Carne Azada Tacos with rice and beans. The sauce for the chips was super good, not too many places make their sauce good, this place was great. We also had cocktails, my wife had a beer, and I had a Margarita with a pineapple mix, it was good. We told our friends to join us on Saturday and found the place closed, which surprised us, it being the weekend and all.

Yelp
Best eats in Milwaukee! Birria y consome is to die for and the drinks are fire too. Great date night spot

Yelp
Dinner and drinks yesterday. Stopped by lazos taco shack for a phenomenal meal as always. I got the birria tacos with consume. Never disappoints! Also requested a grilled jalapeño. Grabbed an old fashioned to sip on. Located in an odd spot but worth it! Food is great, owner is super cool. #eatlikejed #lazostacoshack #mkeeats #nomnom #birriatacos #goodeats #order13 #cooklikejosh #tacotuesday #yelp @yelpwisconsin

Yelp
Great environment, fresh food, excellent service! The chips and salsa will get you wanting more and more and the tacos are authentic and on point! The restaurant was spotless and the bathroom were impeccable. 10/10. Definitely coming back to this beautiful restaurant!
google avatar

Banana S.

Yelp
My wife and I had some taco dinners door dashed from here and even with the 14 minute drive the whole meal was still warm upon arrival. First, I'd like to talk about the red salsa that came with my tacos, it was amazing. It was the right amount of spicy and the flavor had me eating the leftover salsa with the spoon provided like a mini soup. I'd go back for the salsa alone. Luckily, the tacos were just as amazing as the salsa was so when I do go back I'll have plenty of tacos to go with it. Best tacos in town, hands down, I could recommend them 10 times per conversation for the rest of my life and that still wouldn't be enough recognition. I wish I could cater these tacos catered to every remaining life event going forward. Rice and refried beans were also delicious. Counting the seconds until I make my way back to Lazo's!
google avatar

Mark R.

Yelp
Actually, this place is not much to look at, don't care for the dining room but ordered a Enchiladas Dinner Spice Chicken to go and it was pretty tasty. Service was good and serving size was decent. I don't think I would eat in however, did not care for the ambiance.
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
I will definitely be back! It's not hard to make quality Mexican food, you can find it outside of Milwaukee! So why do most places in Milwaukee lack flavor? I am pleased to say that Lazo's cares! Thank you for opening a reasonably priced GOOD Mexican restaurant in Milwaukee!! And my margarita didn't taste cheap.
google avatar

Barbara S.

Yelp
Love this taco shack, really isn't a shack. Beautiful, clean on the inside and the tacos are so delish. Their margarita Paloma's is also so yummy. The owner Jose was really nice. We will definitely be cackling next time we're in Milwaukee. Great customer service as well.
google avatar

Nick M.

Yelp
Got the Birria Tacos to go. I've had quite a few Birria Tacos from all over at this point and I would say theirs is one of the best I've had. The meat was still moist and juicy. The consume was good as well and wasn't very spicy. If you're into Birria, it's definitely worth a stop.
google avatar

Jeff C.

Yelp
Delicious food! My friends and I had a great meal while visiting the area. Service was top notch too!
google avatar

Scarlett T.

Yelp
The restaurant was fairly empty when we got there, so we were able to be seated right away. The workers were nice and the food came out within 5-10 minutes. We ordered the horchata, 4 birria tacos meal, and 1 shrimp taco. The horchata is the best I've had in Milwaukee so far! Lots of cinnamon flavor and not too sweet. The birria with consume was flavorful and not too salty. The shrimp taco was okay, probably wouldn't order again. Overall would recommend this place for a cheap and quick meal.
google avatar

Tanisha H.

Yelp
Ordered a mango margarita and guacamole and chips... my guacamole was really good but the chips tasted a little old I wish they were fresher. But my mango margarita was pretty good.
google avatar

Nava L.

Yelp
This place is amazing!! The chips and salsa are complimentary. The chips are crispy and salty. The salsa is VERY fresh and well made. I got my tacos all a-la-carte so they don't come with rice and beans which is fine for me. The meat in the pastor was sweeter than I expected but still very good! The steak was also good quality. The birria was AMAZING! The service was fast and everyone I was with loved their food. Overall great food and a chill vibe. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
I really loved this little place just on the outskirts of downtown. The owner is super friendly! You have to get the birria tacos, they are one of the best in town, just super crispy on the outside and the consommé is made just right with a lot of flavor. Got the carne asada and was surprised to find that it is super tender compared to other places.
google avatar

Yelp
My first time trying Lazos birria tacos was one of the most memorable. As a taco enthusiast I had to try it! I went with a few friends and we all ordered birria, we sat out in the parking lot on my truck bed and we devoured them! This was in 2021, I immediately went back 2 weeks later. They cook the meat for hours and it is so tender and juicy, the crisp of the shell, and the dipping soup was so flavorful. (Drooling thinking about them). The owner is the friendliest guy, comes to check on you, always welcomes you with a genuine smile. Chilled environment! I highly recommend trying Lazos Taco shack! Birria so good I made it my profile picture. A must stop for taco lovers

Yelp
Ordered carry-out yesterday for my first time visiting Lazo's. I placed my order with a scheduled pick-up for three hours later. I arrived and found the owner realized my order wasn't started. The owner apologized, went into the kitchen to review my order with the cooks and told me my order would be ready in 10 minutes. My food was ready within 10 minutes. I ordered 3 combination dinners (taco, enchilada, and tostada with rice and refried beans), for my mother, sister, and me, as well as a small order or guacamole. Every single bite was outstanding! My mother and sister concurred. The meats were well-seasoned, flavorful, and tender, the tostada shell was strong enough to stay together the entire time it was being eaten, and it was strong finish to a rocky start. Enchiladas come with red sauce or salsa verde. The young lady on the phone said the red sauce was spicy, and the verde was mild, but my verde had a little kick to it, and when I tried the red sauce, it was very mild, but not as flavorful as the verde. The salsa verde wasn't too spicy, by any means, but it had just enough kick to notice it, and it was delicious. Lazo's DOES have another red sauce that is spicy, but I didn't want it, so perhaps the young lady was thinking the spicy red sauce was the only red sauce offered. The bottom line is that all of the food was excellent, I will be a repeat customer! Also, going forward, I'll remember to call when I'm on my way to pick up my order if I place an order more than 30 minutes in advance. Also, note to Lazo's staff, I wore a mask when I entered your business for your safety, so I think you should be wearing masks and gloves in the restaurant business for your customers' safety during a pandemic, or at least wash hands or use hand sanitizer when giving the customer their food order. Thanks!

Yelp
Food was okay, not as good as I expected. The service was not that great, that was the biggest turn off. We got there and waited at least 10 minutes and had to go up to the bar to ask how do we order despite trying to get someones attention. The waiter responded that he thought someone was taking care of us, but it was only him and another waitress in a small restaurant. The place was smaller than I expected. I guess my hopes were high based on the instagram reel I saw. I wouldn't return based on service and atmosphere.

Robert B.

Yelp
Their birria tacos are amazing to say the least, so I had to try some other tacos and they did not disappoint at all they were amazing. The environment is always comfortable and the service was great. The owner was there and we talked for a moment and his love and passion for his business is just amazing so you know he puts that love in making sure all his customers feel heard and taken care of. A must go if you visit Milwaukee and if you live in Milwaukee and haven't gone I have no clue what you're doing.

Yelp
We were visiting and wanted some good Mexican food. My husband found Lazo's. It was great! We went for a early lunch. Service was great. I had the nachos and they were great. The nachos I had were steak and they were very generous with the meat. My hubby and daughter both had the burrito meal. Both commented how much steak was in the burrito. Would definitely recommend!

Yelp
This is a cute little spot to get quality Mexican food. The strawberry margarita and spicy mango are incredible. The staff is nice, friendly and helpful.

Yelp
I always like to check out new restaurants but being adventurous isn't easy during Milwaukee winters. Lazo's is right downtown, just half a block off of Wisconsin Ave, next to a karaoke bar I also didn't know existed. I'm glad I braved the elements, such as they were, because they have some solid food. I kept reading in other reviews about the salsa. It is very fresh, kind of pico de gallo style. It's not super spicy but the fresh vegetable flavor really comes through. I got the burrito plate with the chicken tinga. The burrito was HUGE. I was full after about half of it and took the rest home. The tinga was flavorful, again not super spicy. The shredded chicken was perfect. The rice and beans were just rice and beans, but they reheated well the next day. They weren't super busy when I visited but that could have been the weather. It was cold and there was a fierce wind. They seemed popular with the hotel crowd nearby. It won't take the place of some of my favorite Walker's Point spots but it's worth a spot on the rotation. The quesadillas look worth trying also.

Yelp
Loved the Birria tacos from here! I walked into work with them and all of a sudden, 5 others had gotten meals from there, with a few eating here two days in a row. Tacos are a good size, and the dipping sauce is always the helping hand in making these kind of tacos delicious. Side note & shout out: I am not sure who or where came up with these delicious ideas for a taco, but thank you! To-go service was quick and efficient. It seemed to be family run, as children and teenagers seemed to be milling around the most.

Yelp
I placed an order to go so I cannot rate the service experience. My order was ready when promised. The food was just ok. Presentation was fine but lacking any kind of flavor. I will not be returning to Lazo's any time soon.
