Three Restaurants to Try This Weekend | Eater DC

"I discovered a bustling 9:30 a.m. breakfast scene at this Falls Church diner, where a spinach-and-havarti omelet, restorative matzo ball soup, respectable chicken cheesesteak, and classic creamed chipped beef with home fries all hit the mark—parking can be tricky. " - Eater Staff

Career Restaurateurs Hope Their Beloved Ice Cream Shop’s Third Move Is Its Last | Eater DC

"Straddling the border between Falls Church City and Fairfax County, the recently relocated ice cream shop/deli has opened three times in three different jurisdictions over the past 20 years and now operates as Lazy Mike’s. Run by siblings David and Rebecca Tax, the homegrown sweets shop evolved from their first Clarendon venture, Lazy Sundae, and expanded through other restaurants (including Big Belly Deli and Clare and Don’s, known for its crab cakes and fish tacos), before moving to a Falls Church site at 112 N. West Street and later to its current, more prominent corner location. In 2008 they added sandwiches under the name Mike’s Deli in honor of their late father (whose likeness appears on the menu cover in an old VW bus), and today the menu features no-frills good food — all-day breakfast, specialty sandwiches, and wildly flavored ice creams. The Taxes recall an unseasonably warm October 2017 reopening that produced a late-season rush, sending them through as much ice cream as the entire prior year; a bright ice cream sign and proximity to the W&OD bike trail help draw customers now. Favorites include honey baklava and a peanut butter-and-jelly flavor (which David initially doubted but now calls “delicious”), while Rebecca favors a cinnamon-laced, spicy-creamy-sweet “fireballs” creation. Above all, they aim to make everyone — from 2 to 98 years old — feel comfortable, though David says he’s a few years from “wintertime retirement” and the pair claim they’re done opening new restaurants for now, even if they leave the door slightly ajar." - Rebecca Gale

Google
Had a great reuben and some delicious latkas. My partner had the "monster breakfast," which was good but not exceptional. Great service. I'd recommend trying their traditional Jewish food.

Google
We were thrilled to discover a fantastic breakfast spot in the Falls Church neighborhood. This charming old-school diner features an impressive array of sandwich options, a diverse breakfast menu, homemade ice cream, vegetarian and vegan choices, and all-day breakfast classics, including delicious omelets. The monster breakfast was incredibly satisfying, while the burrito was packed with fresh, flavorful ingredients. The corned beef hash paired perfectly with both of our meals. The service was swift, and our server was patient and friendly, enhancing our experience. The atmosphere struck a perfect balance with its vintage décor, adorned with street signs, stickers, and abundant plant pots, giving it a delightful retro vibe. There’s also outdoor seating for pleasant weather days and convenient parking behind the deli.

Google
My friends and I absolutely loved this place. One friend got the Breakfast Platter ($11), another got the Cali Chicken Sandwich ($11). The two of us who grew up in New York chose the Classic Reuben ($12) and Brooklyn Bridge ($12) with Latkes for an additional $4. Large portions, delicious food, great service. Fantastic value.

Google
Had Omelette and Pancakes for breakfast Both were very good. Nice menu choices for lunch as well. The Chicken Salad melt was very good.

Google
Great little restaurant. We came here looking for donuts, no donuts but they had delicious ice cream. We decided to come back and get some food. Everyone was extremely nice and helpful with service. Portions are great and we will come back for more.

Google
We were looking for a new brunch location and saw Lazy Mike’s Deli review today in the Washington Post Best Deli’s food section. Wow, absolutely our new favorite casual dining experience! We were welcomed by both servers and asked for a few recommendations as it was our first visit. Fantastic menu, delicious food and when we mentioned seeing their write up in the newspaper the owner came out to greet us and welcomed us to their deli. They also have a cozy outdoor area, homemade ice cream and a large, varied menu that will take us many visits to sample. Highly recommend!

Even though our relatives moved out of this area whenever we’re visiting DC we still stay in Falls Church & eat several meals at Lazy Mike’s. It’s a lot of fun to read the wall sign, enjoy the NY deli vibe & sort of NE Boardwalk feel too. A great menu to please most dietary needs & special requests. The servers are grand (Eric & Jake) even on busy nights! Selections; Chili topped with cheese & onions was nicely spiced. Mushroom & Swiss Burger thru the garden on a great roll. Delicious. Asked for Xtra crispy fries-perfect. Veggie Melt had fresh delicious veggies-yummy. Pint old fashioned chocolate ice cream to-go. Next day, omelette stuffed with oodles of veggies, hot peppers & cheese. It was huge. Veggie sandwich with dill harvarti-so good more crispy fries. Of course, scoops of ice cream butter pecan that had a hint of maple syrup flavor ,and chocolate. Very generous portions at great prices. Cash or credit cards. No reservations needed. Outdoor seating available. The only flaw were the tired & dingy bathrooms. Could use better looking & more scrubbed up tile flooring. Otherwise, definitely stop by Lazy Mike’s for a fun treat for your senses.

Google
Fun deli/ice-cream eatery. Excellent and friendly service. Party of six on a weekend. Prices are reasonable for the sandwiches and everything we had was tasty. Ice cream is very nice and the variety is good. The only negative we had is that one of our party upgraded to the Latkes with the sandwich, and while they were tasty, the general feeling was the extra cost (double the cost of fries) is not justified for what you get.

Yelp
Been coming to this place for YEARS, whether their chicken cheese steak, their egg and bacon burger, or their gutbuster (deliciousness in a sandwich) it's fantastic!!!!! Their ambience is that of an old school diner and they show it through their service, their style but also their spirit, NOT TO MENTION HOME MADE ICE CREAM Stop reading this review and GO GET YOU SOME!

Yelp
Idk what this place is trying to be... it's labeled as a deli.... Somewhere else I saw it's a delicatessen.... Walked in, place looked like a brunch spot! I was shocked it was completely full in the middle of the afternoon, staff was running around like crazy. My review is kind of cheating, I came here for ice cream sandwiches, gluten free ice cream sandwiches.... Thankfully, they were all packed and by the door, was shocked to see a variety of flavors ... obviously had to buy one of each. Was slightly disappointed when we realized only one was gluten free, so went to grab another one and was happy to see there were two gf flavors. Cookies were great! Perfect gf cookies, amazing creamy ice cream! My favorite was the cafe du leche. Other half of my family who enjoy gluten really loved the peanut butter one. We will be back for sure.

Yelp
Coming back to reaffirm my 5-star review of this Falls Church gem. As a vegan, I cannot overstate how appreciative I am to have this place near me whenever I am craving something nostalgic and delicious. The fact they offer so many plant-based options and substitutions makes this one of the most vegan friendly places nearby where you can truly scratch any itch you have. Additionally, they have proven to me that they know the difference between vegan and vegetarian, making me very comfortable ordering here. I just had the vegan Reuben for the 100th time, and got a vegan Chicago style dog the other day. Both were superb. Vegans and carnivores alike will feel at home here.

Yelp
I'm from out west, and found this by simply asking Google for a nearby deli. This unassuming deli has a great ambiance, a simple decor, and wonderful food. We had matzoh ball soup, a grilled cheese sandwich, a patty melt, and egg & latke bagel. Everything was great comfort food on a cold afternoon. I'd love to live near this deli--I'd be a weekly regular!

Yelp
Stopped here for lunch after finding the spot online. The menu looked great, and I decided to try the chicken cheesesteak. My order was ready in about 15 minutes, which was super quick. I think I accidentally selected white sliced bread instead of a hoagie roll when ordering, but honestly, it didn't matter lol the sandwich was AMAZING. The flavors were spot on, with a perfect cheese pull, flavorful onions and mushrooms, and just the right amount of messiness (the best kind of cheesesteak!). Highly recommend stopping by if you're in the area.

Yelp
Casual hidden gem in Falls Church. Very quick service and friendly staff. The menu also has a great variety of options to choose from with even all day breakfast. I love getting the cali chicken sandwich here. I have also tried their breakfast platters but their sandwiches are great. Parking lot might be a little tricky and can get crowded during peak hours but this is a great spot for lunch.

Yelp
We often play pickleball at the Meridian high school. We tried this place post pickleball. Turns out the owner is part of our pickleball community. I haven't met him personally but one of my friends knows him. But that does not influence my review. This place has to got to be on your list for American breakfast and lunch at a very affordable price. I ordered breakfast burrito and cheese burger. One of the biggest burritos I have had. And the price was nominal. Absolutely worth it. It was very delicious. Burger was great as well. Fries were one of the best in the area. Nice and crunchy. Ambiance is like any other diner. Casual dress code. Service was nice and fast. It was packed for brunch. It may be hard to find a parking spot. Highly recommend this place if you're in this area.

Yelp
World's best ice cream. I stg this is the best ice cream I've ever had. I will fly on an 11hr flight to Virginia again just to eat their ice cream. Their chocolate cookies and cream is the best and the blue vanilla is so good. I've been thinking about their ice cream every single day and I get depressed knowing that they're so far from my home. 10000000/10 ice cream Burger and breakfast food good too. The potato things were good. People are nice. Vibes are good. But the Ice cream ... live laugh love it.

Yelp
I have doctor appointments across the street from the restaurant at least once a month and always make it a point to get to the area (I live 1.5 hours away) just so I can eat here! The food is amazing, the service is spot on and there is seating outside as well. I always feel welcomed and never rushed.

Yelp
Always a great experience at Mike's. The food is always delicious and the ice cream is so refreshing. I've had burgers and sandwiches here and you cannot make a wrong choice. The atmosphere is a classic diner experience that seems more homey than the typical chain restaurants. Service is generally quick, unless there is a really long line, but the people are always so friendly. I got the honey ice cream while others got the Cookie Monster, mint, and butterscotch. All were fantastic! I am on a quest to try the baklava ice cream because it's always gone when I have a chance to swing by. I will get it eventually!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I have been here many times since we first heard about this place from a youtube video and it's been pretty freaking good every time! I personally looooove the chicken cheesesteak, and of course i sub the fries. Their fries are the BEST (and i don't say that lightly) especially when they use fresh oil, which just makes it even better. The servers are very friendly and quick, they come by every so often to check in or offer refills on water/coffee! Our food has always come out rather quickly too, no longer than 12-15 minutes, I'd say. I've only had 2 flavors of their ice cream but I'm definitely trying more! They're rich and creamy and a yummy little sweet treat :D I haven't had much else of the menu besides their sandwiches, but their items are priced reasonably for what you get, and they were transparent about their price increases when egg prices were very high, which I appreciate! Overall definitely coming back many many times in the future

Yelp
Cute, simple and classic diner. Good assortment of sandwiches and option to create your own. Decent seating space and cute outdoor area great for breakfast. Cheesesteak was tender and had good flavor but not as much cheese as I'd like. The Rueben dog was so good- the didn't skimp on the toppings and both entrees were fresh and hot. The fries could have been more fresh but still semi warm. Great price and good portions

Yelp
LOVE this spot in the City. Always great food and great energy. Locally owned and it's the sister location to Clare and Don's. Atmosphere is not what you would expect, but definitely fits the vibe. Food is always fresh and the staff is attentive. If you have's had a chance to visit Lazy Mikes you need to! They have outdoor seating available too.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here with a friend and were seated right away. Ordered a soup to start which was decent. Got the breakfast burrito and my friend got a sandwich. The downside was that a lot of it didn't really have much flavor or seasoning so had to load this with hot sauce. Service was ok and the milkshake was decent as well

Dylan O.

Yelp
Unbelievable!! My buddy and I just got a pair of "what the latke" breakfast sandwiches and were both thoroughly satisfied and impressed with our meal: perfect bagel, top tier cheese pull, crispy latke and expertly cooked meats. Just a wonderfully crafted sammy that we thought was easily deserving of a 5-Star review. Service was also great. Kind, helpful and patient staff that got our food out surprisingly fast. Took our food to go but the place has that classic laid back diner vibe that makes it easy to relax and enjoy your meal/company, and having such friendly servers is a cherry on top. We'll be back tomorrow.

Yelp
This is one of our favorite places for a post summer camp treat! It is bright, open, and casual and we often run into other Falls Church families looking for a quick bite to eat and a sweet treat. Service is friendly and prices are reasonable. My husband likes the reuban but the girls and I are all about the homemade ice cream and ice cream sandwiches. The menu changes seasonally and they have kid-friendly options like "Dirt" (chocolate ice cream with oreo crumbles and gummy worms) to more adult flavors like lavender and honey. You'll get happy nostalgic feels whenever you visit!
google avatar

Graysen V.

Yelp
I am a self-proclaimed ice cream connoisseur. I legitimately eat ice cream every day. And THIS is good ice cream. The flavors were creative but not at expense of quantity. The ice cream was rich, creamy, and a generous portion size. I was in awe given how disappointing the ice cream scene is in DC. If you need a new ice cream place to try, heavily recommend coming here!
google avatar

Lou L.

Yelp
Great food fast. Turning over tables like a machine, and old fashioned courteous at the same time. Family of 4 had great breakfasts all around. Looks like a cross between a diner and a lunch hall with the view into the fry cook's kitchen.
google avatar

LuAnne B.

Yelp
Don't drive by Lazy Mikes without stopping!!! Unassuming outside, but inside offers up authentic NY made-to-order deli sandwiches, delicious homemade soup, and don't forget homemade ICE CREAM!!!! Very family-friendly. Prices are good for the portions you get.
google avatar

Mashaal W.

Yelp
We passed by this cozy looking ice cream booth and thought we'd give it a try. It's a quaint little place with colorful outdoor seating. I got the black raspberry ice cream sandwich w/lemon cookie and it was stellar! My husband got the peppermint and thought it was amazing too, he finished it before I could even try a bite! The girl at the counter was super friendly and patient with my daughter's request for samples, so all over a win-win. I wish we lived closer so I could go here all the time :)
google avatar

Nicole F.

Yelp
Busy but service on point food came out quickly. I noticed everyone's food came out quick as well. They have hole army cooking and waiting on you. First time here but will not be my last. Parking lot is crazy but who cares when u get service like this!! My corn beef hash was fresh not that can stuff and not salty.. good job
google avatar

Ira G.

Yelp
Food and service is consistently fabulous! And all-day breakfast - must try the corned beef hash. Pricing is reasonable for the amount of food you get. Very laid back vibe and outdoor seating too.

Orange And Blue R.

Yelp
Its cheap so that boosts it a star. Great value and the locals know it that's why its always packed. The food itself is sub par. I mean you know what your getting. Its not anything crazy, in my opinion, dent expect a Gordon Ramsey "Hells Kitchen" vibe, but if you want something fast and cheap this is your joint. It also gets another star because their French fries are so good fresh. I am tempted to place them over McDonalds fries. And finally its a four star because of their home made ice cream. I would probably go their just for their ice cream alone.
google avatar

Elizabeth O.

Yelp
I've always drove by & seen it packed with people, so i gave it a try today ! First of all the server was amazing , she was so sweet i believe her name was Hannah! The food was brought quickly and tasted delicious! By far the best steak and cheese i've tried! I also got a milkshake and let me tell you! she made the best milkshake i've tried by far. I will be coming again soon. :)
google avatar

Eric E.

Yelp
This place feels like it's been here forever and gives off a great homey feel when you're dining. Delicious, fast, cheap. What else could you ask for? Breakfast all day, fantastic ice cream and good sandwiches. I'm always happy to eat here and the people working seem genuinely happy that I'm here, too.
google avatar

Eun L.

Yelp
First time eating here and was pleasantly surprised. Came here for brunch after our usual Saturday ride for our friend's last meal before she left the country. Very casual place on the corner of an intersection. But it's a little below street level so you aren't facing directly into traffic. We sat outside under the tent. There were plenty of seats and tables available. It had rained earlier in the day so perhaps not a lot of people wanted to sit outside. They don't have physical menus but QR code you scan and order online. Many of us are not fans of ordering this way so we opted to go up to the outside window and order in person. It was treated as a to-go order so we picked up our food when it was ready. Cashier was friendly. I ordered a chicken cheesesteak with a Coke Zero (no Diet Coke). It was served in a paper bag and came with a bag of chips and a pickle. The sandwich had chunks of chicken instead of shaved meat, which I really liked. It had peppers, melty cheese and tomatoes. I got the mayo on the side. The bread was great...the bread always makes or breaks a sandwich. It was soft, but crusty, too. It was a decent portion as well. Price is great for the size and considering everything has become so expensive post COVID. Friends all got dishes that looked great, too. A friend got the corned beef hash, which I think my husband would love to have. It comes with two eggs and toast. Looked like a great, hearty dish. There are lots of option on the menu; the variety makes it great for groups with different preferences. The adjacent parking is for the Vet so you have to be careful of where you park your car. But I think I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Navin K.

Yelp
Superb little breakfast place. I came with a friend while visiting the DC metro area this Memorial Day weekend. The restaurant was practically empty at 8 am and packed at 9, with only outdoor seating available then. We split a monster breakfast - scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, skillet potatoes, French toast - with constant refills of steaming hot coffee. I also added in a small bowl of oatmeal and we shared a brownie later. Service was warm and efficient - I appreciate that they didn't rush us even when the crowd picked up. Food was standard diner fare - simple home cooked goodness. The oatmeal was exceptionally creamy and delicious. Parking was a breeze. Will return next time I'm in the area!
google avatar

Eileen B.

Yelp
9 AM, weekday , two omelets with potatoes and toast with coffee with bill at $23. few customers at that time but began to fill up. Very attentive, polite waitress who refilled coffee repeatedly . Food was good, hot and served quickly. Big parking lot in back off Shreve Road- easy in and out. Very clean. We were not rushed and sat talking for 90 minutes. Very impressed.

Jake A.

Yelp
Best place to eat anywhere. My all time favorite restaurant, the ambiance and service are amazing.
google avatar

Lily B.

Yelp
My family and I have been going for years! There's so many options on the menu, but we may not go for the amazing breakfast items! The monster breakfast is to die for! Those blueberry pancakes are so fluffy and flavorful! Not only does Mike's deli do breakfast and lunch. They also make their own ice cream. Ice cream comes in many tasty flavors! Mike's Deli does classics like egg creams, which I have always wanted to try! Service there is always perfect! They are so friendly and helpful! I love how affordable the food is, even with the rising price of eggs right now. There are always so many people there. Locals love this place. But, I assure you will not have to wait too long for a table. Inside is classic diner styled with interesting pictures and posters hanging on the walls. There is also outdoor seating for furry friends! Lazy Mike's brings this community together!

Yelp
Officially now my favorite "NY Jewish Style Deli" in the area. And ice cream too. Great Matza ball soup. Great deli sandwiches. Decent Knishes!
google avatar

Penny M.

Yelp
I've been coming here since their original location next to 7-Eleven off of West Broad Street. These are some of the best deli sandwiches in the area and the place itself has such a nice family deli vibe to it. The food is always amazing. And the staff is always very welcoming and fun. I always recommend the Ruben or any of the breakfast sandwiches.
google avatar

Sue K.

Yelp
Hidden gem of West Falls Church! They have delicious food and great service. Think diner-vibe but with better food. The impossible cheesesteak was just BEYOND. Did not try their ice cream but it looked really good! 10/10 would return again!
google avatar

Elizabeth V.

Yelp
This place is amazing. Such a cute small business. A really cozy inside space. Fantastic menu with great all day breakfast items and lunch. Fantastic vegetarian/vegan options. And bonus Jewish deli highlights like NY egg cream, potato knish, matzo ball soup. Amazing. A gem of a place. Great customer service. Delicious food and great ambiance. Support this small business
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Great food for a reasonable price. We enjoyed the steak and cheese sandwich and a club sandwich. Both were very flavorful. Service was prompt and friendly. Indoor restaurant was pretty basic. Outdoor eating area is nice, but it is at the intersection of two roads. Food is good, but the bonus is fresh made pies and ice cream for dessert.
google avatar

Mike R.

Yelp
Love it here. What a fun place. So glad this went in years back, over the once atrocious Long John Silver's. It's a good spot to unwind, and to get burgers or sandwiches. There's a counter which gives you a view, or feel fine to go in the booths. Cozy and nice employees. Service is always excellent. What brings it more charm, is that it isn't anything fancy. You can go in here casually, as there's no stuffed suit nonsense here. The food is tasty and reasonably priced. Definitely get the ice cream. It's where it's at. My only complaint is their parking is limited, but that's not a major detraction. If you're in the area give it a try.

Liz H.

Yelp
Falls Church is lucky to have Lazy Mikes and everyone who lives here knows it. Unpretentious tasty food done right at a fair price (which you don't find anymore). Favs are runny egg breakfast croissant (so so good), a crispy BLT on a hot day, or a cold tuna salad on rye. Yum. Kudos for keeping it real and serving our community with style.
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Amazing, amazing and ALL that! I ordered the Rock sammich with onion rings. And got a banger ice cream shake!!

Robert E.

Yelp
This place is great!! The staff there is super friendly! I love the sandwiches and the home made ice cream is the best in the DC area.
google avatar

Adam A.

Yelp
Great breakfast food, relatively inexpensive. Love the home fries! Service is fast and friendly. Nice outdoor seating option if you want as well. No frills just solid food!
google avatar

Soo C.

Yelp
Mike's is always a great place for a fast breakfast. My go to is always the breakfast burrito with veggie sausage. It's a generous portion and Mike, not Mike Mike is always nearby to refill your coffee cup or your water. The made to order breakfasts are fast no matter how many people are eating. They've got a great system down. In the evenings when I've been there for ice cream, they have always have a plentiful selection of ice cream flavors. The evening staff is friendly and prompt. The ambiance is like you're at the beach and it's clean. Decent place for groups. It's first come first serve and they also have outdoor seating. Mike's is always a solid choice for a quick casual bite or getting your ice cream fix!
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
Lazy Mike's is just great! It's a funky little place in Falls Church. It features typical deli sandwiches. My go-to is the Reuben. It can be ordered with chips or fries. Breakfast is served all day. The ice cream service is as great as the deli! A single scoop is generous. The servers are friendly and efficient. Be aware parking is in the back.

Ken L.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place and totally loved it. Staff are friendly and quick to take care of everything. Food served hot and fresh. Outstanding all over! Looking forward to coming back again.

Sunnyfishnca M.

Yelp
We were waiting to pick up our Tesla and was hungry. A quick yelp search brought up this lil place. Great food - mom & pop style. We ordered the lil Asher (potatoes with eggs, onions, peppers & cheese) btw way not only large but filling. The hubs had the lox everything bagel. Quite large and he loved it (added capers) next time he will go heavier on the cream cheese though. So glad we checked it because we'll come back. There is seating outside and probably a dozen seats inside. The place is animal friendly (at least in the outdoor seating) with bowls for them Great find - go check them out!!

Yelp
Good food, quick service, nice atmosphere. Visiting for the day and decided to drop by at the recommendation of a local, worth it!
google avatar

Carpe D M.

Yelp
I love a great steak and cheese, but this one was not stellar. While you do have the option of adding more meat, I felt there should've been a little more steak on my cheesesteak. I appreciate tthat they weren't skimpy on the toppings (lettuce, tomato, cheese, mushrooms, jalapeños), but it is called a cheesesteak. It look like the person next to me had their corn beef and pastrami sandwich and it looked loaded with meat. Maybe I'll come back and try that one. The service was great and the seating was what she'd expect for a small deli.

Hermon A.

Yelp
Great food. The tuna melt is a go to but haven't had anything that wasn't good. Great service and atmosphere.
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
I've only had the steak and cheese here. Great lunch spot and they're always busy which is a good indicator for how good the food is. Located in the old Long John Silvers building in Falls Church. Highly recommend!
