Me and my daughter travel all over Michigan, checking out different bbq spots. It's our thang. In all, over 30 in the lower peninsula over the past 3 years. So, we happened upon this one.
When we order during our visits, we order a ton to get a good sampling of their menu. Lazybones offered a Texas Sampler, which is a good sample portion of their meat: Carolina pulled pork, St. Louis spareribs, Texas beef brisket, "Detroit style" rib tips, Kansas City burnt ends, Honey Sriracha pork belly, smoked turkey breast, Kentucky smoked chicken. We also added on an extra side of brisket and St. Louis ribs, along with extra cornbread. They threw in five good size cups of mixed barbecue sauces and a mustard. They gave us five in all, the restaurant offers 10, which was impressive.
In short, this crew knows what they're doing. Nothing was overcooked or dry, everything had a good amount of seasoning. Nothing was served with a bunch of sauce already over top of it which is nice, so you can taste the dry rub and smoke. Some places drown their food in sauce because their food has no flavor and this certainly isn't that kind of place. The burnt ends had a nice char to it, the turkey had nice smoke flavor, the brisket was on point, perfectly done, the ribs were pull off the bone, perfectly cooked. The pork belly in my opinion was the best, great flavor. The smoked chicken was done perfectly, the pulled pork and sausage was right on point and the rip tips were done perfectly. We also had chili and mac & cheese. The chili had a nice spice to it with a heavy chili seasoning in a brown roux. The mac & cheese was on point, nice crust on top, not dry, but not overloaded in a cheese sauce.
My only critique of the experience is the cornbread. It is traditional so as foodies know, it also means dry. If that's what you're accustomed to then good deal. Those that know, loading on a bunch butter definitely helps. However, there are some great recipes for a good moist cornbread that would go well with everything else.
The location does not have traditional restaurant seating. There is a U-shaped counter that you can eat a lunch or dinner at. This place is 95% carry out. Not a big deal, just giving a heads up.
They also have some other products at the store counter for an upsell. We dove in on a couple pieces of cheesecake from a company that makes it locally in Detroit. They were absolutely delicious.
The two staff members that we spoke to briefly were very friendly and welcoming. I overheard several phone conversations while they were taking orders and they are on top of their game in customer service.
I would give this place a 4.5 star if I could. I believe it's over a four star rating, just short of a five star. A definite recommendation for a take out dinner for the family. Thank you for a great experience. We will be back...
